Center of the Nation Appaloosa Horse Club Happy Birthday! The Center of the Nation Appaloosa Horse Club (CON ApHC) was formed on September 24, 1960 as a regional club of the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC), making 2015 our 55th birthday! The ApHC is the international breed registry for the Appaloosa horse. Regional clubs across the nation have activities ranging from sponsoring horse shows, horse races, trail rides or other competitions to educational and social events for the whole family. Members of the CON ApHC participate in registered breed shows, open shows, team roping jackpots, trail riding, and more. For more information, visit our website at or check us out on Facebook at Congratulations! Congratulations to KLB Performance Horses, Carly Wettlaufer, Danny Bennett, and Alice Stewart for their successes at the Nebraska Appaloosa Club Think Pink Horse Shows in 2015!! Smart Mate Chex Out, owned by Carly, and Hollywood Rita, owned by Danny and Dorine, tied for the Champion Cattle Horse Award. Both horses, trained and shown by Lee Bennett and Kelly Lind of KLB Performance Horses received beautiful custom-made breast collars donated by Coats Saddlery. Congratulations also to Carly Wettlaufer and Smart Mate Chex Out, winning the High Point Non Pro Cattle Horse Award. The buckle was donated by JR's Western in memory of Barb Tool's great rope horse, Klassy Kettle. Carly Wettlaufer was also the Overall High Point Non Pro exhibitor, riding Zip Invited Me, Ima Zip Code Too, and Smart Mate Chex Out in a variety of classes, ranging from the cattle classes to pleasure and horsemanship. Congratulations to My Bentley, owned by CON ApHC member, Alice Stewart, on winning the High Point Western Horse Award! Pizza Party and Awards Lunch January 17-18, 2015 What a great way to start the year! A number of the CON ApHC members and guests enjoyed a pizza party at the AmericInn in Madison on the evening of January 17th. (The AmericInn has been a good sponsor for the club.) The following day, it was time for a meeting to make plans for the upcoming year and to recognize the previous year s accomplishments. Awards were given to those doing well at the ApHC approved shows and to those who logged hours riding their horses with the ApHC. There were several nice prizes, including these picture pillows for the leadline girls. They ll enjoy these reminders of their friends from the shows! A complete list of point standings is available at our website. Thank You! We want to be sure to say a big THANK YOU to all of our supporters and sponsors in 2015! We certainly appreciate how much their contributions mean to the CON ApHC! We are grateful to the members who put in their time and efforts for our club, as well as the special support we received from AmericInn, John Doblar, Jim Jirkovsky, Dennis, Cleva, and Mildred Johannes, T&R Electric, and Bill Zaharia!
Happy Trails to You! The CON ApHC hosted a trail ride in July 2015 at Turkey Creek Ranch overlooking the bluffs of the Missouri River. The event started with a potluck on Friday evening followed by catered meals and plenty of riding on Saturday and Sunday. There were hills to climb and meadows to cross, as well as some very interesting obstacles to challenge the riders. The weather was hot, but the scenery was beautiful and the food was good. There was plenty of visiting around the campfire, as well as a scavenger hunt for the youth and games of horseshoes for everyone to try too. We are planning another trail ride in 2016! For info on Turkey Creek Ranch visit turkeycreekne.com/ Appaloosa MAGIC! This young CON ApHC member, Rayven Dutenhoffer, did a great job and won this saddle and blanket! The award was from the MAGIC buckle series of horse shows with appaloosa and open classes held in Minnesota and South Dakota. She wasn t the only member of the CON ApHC winning awards! Rayven s parents, Colin and Denise Dutenhoffer accepted an embroidered horse blanket as a year-end award, and Terri McCarty received a buckle for her reserve championship yearend award. CON ApHC Shows Although our members show at multiple ApHCapproved shows throughout the nation, we were especially involved in two shows held in August in eastern South Dakota: the CON ApHC Special Event and the Sioux Empire Fair Appaloosa Show. The CON ApHC Special Event was held on Thursday, August 6th, 2015 at Doblar Arena near Madison with horses from SD, MN, NE, and ND. The show started with ranch horse classes, followed by reining, cattle events and games classes. The judges for our show were Jean Hommel and Mary Ingwerson The showbill and results are posted on our website. The following day, these participants joined others at the Sioux Empire Fair Appaloosa Show in Sioux Falls. There were similar and additional events offered and judged by Jill Paxton and Gene Carr. Although this was not a CON ApHC sponsored show, we did assist with the planning for the show and Diane Nickel served as the show secretary. Both of these shows are planned to be held again in SD Horse Council Member The CON ApHC was a member of the SD Horse Council (SDHC) in The SDHC is organized to further the common interests of the horsepersons of South Dakota, to serve as means of communication within the industry where unity and strength are needed, to monitor legislation and administrative decisions which would have an impact on horses or horsepersons and to promote interest in horse related activities. The SDHC sponsored a harness clinic in Several CON ApHC members have been past recipients of the Horse Person of the Year and the Outstanding Member awards. For more information, visit
Don t Mess With In Texas The slogan might be Don t Mess With Texas but we had some CON ApHC members travel to Ft. Worth this Summer for the 2015 ApHC National Show and 2015 AYA Youth World Show, and they didn t mess around in Texas! They did a great job! Kelly Lind and Lee Bennett of KLB Performance Horses earned several Top 10 placings for customers. Kelly was in the Top 10 in the Senior Western Pleasure and Ladies Western Pleasure classes, while Lee earned championships in Jr. Judged Tie-Down Roping, Timed Calf Roping, Jr. Heading, Jr. Heeling, and Heading & Heeling as well as Top 10 placings in Steer Daubing and Sr. Working Cow Horse. He showed Hollywood Rita, owned by CON ApHC members Danny and Dorine Bennett to a 2nd place standing for the Champion Cattle Horse Award. Carly Wettlaufer and her daughters Briella and Taya also had success at the show in Texas. Carly and her horse, Smart Mate Chex Out, earned the Champion Non-Pro Cattle Horse Award by placing in several classes. They won the championship in these non-pro classes: Working Cow Horse, Judged Tie-Down Roping, Timed Calf Roping, Judged Heading and reserve championships in these non-pro classes: Breakaway Calf Roping, Judged Heeling, and Heading & Heeling. She also earned a Top 10 ribbon in Non-Pro Steer Daubing. Taya earned a Top 10 finish in the Leadline 6 & Under class and her older sister, Briella (Bree) was in the Top 10 placings in the Walk-Trot 10 & Under classes of Camas Prairie Stump Race and Figure 8 Race. Way to go! Crossing the Border Some of the CON ApHC members headed north to cross the border into Canada to compete at the Canadian National Appaloosa Show in Brandon, MB in the Summer of 2015.and they did pretty good!! Terri McCarty showed Sully s Black Jewel in several classes, bringing home the championship honors in the Non-Pro Barrel Race, the Keyhole Race, and the Rope Race and placing in the Ladies Native Dress and Non-Pro Pole Bending Race classes. My Bentley, owned by CON ApHC member Alice Stewart did well in the western pleasure, hunter under saddle, and hunter in hand classes and earned the Overall High Point Performance Horse award. Way to go! Rayven Dutenhoffer competed in the 10 & Under youth division and placed a number of times in the ribbons with her family s gelding, All About Pretty. The classes they competed in ranged from the speed events (barrel race, pole bending, keyhole race, and figure 8 race) to the horsemanship and pleasure classes. They earned the reserve national champion award in the keyhole race class! All About Pretty and Sully s Black Jewel were both captured in photos demonstrating the wonderful disposition Appaloosas are noted for as they enjoyed the loving and grooming from these young girls! A Focus on Youth CON ApHC members, Kelly Lind and Lee Bennett of KLB Performance Horses assisted at an educational event in Kearney, NE that was organized by Appaloosa Youth Association (AYA) Director, Audrey Worthing, as a fundraiser for the AYA. Held in March, 2015, the clinic offered participants the opportunity to work on developing their skills in showmanship, western pleasure, horsemanship, trail, and reining. The CON ApHC plans to host a similar clinic with KLB for 4-H members in South Dakota in 2016.
ApHC Chief Joseph Trail Ride The National Chief Joseph Trail Ride (CJTR) is one of the most historic trail rides in the United States today. It follows the 1300-mile trek the Nez Perce people took during their flight from the U. S. Cavalry in It takes thirteen years to ride the entire trail, as each year the riders travel 100 miles over a 5-day period, riding 20 miles per day. The ride starts at the homeland of the Nez Perce in the Wallowa Valley in Joseph, Oregon and finishes at Bear Paw Battlefield in Montana. The twelfth of thirteen legs of the CJTR was ridden in 2015.The ride started near Rygate MT and terminated miles later near Roy MT. CON ApHC members, Loretta Waltner, Maggie Miller, and Doug and Lori Richards spent several wonderful days in 2015 enjoying the CJTR. Doug and Lori were recognized with awards for their 5th year of riding the CJTR. Every morning at 8am a colorful sight of Appaloosa horses leave camp continuing on the trail that was ridden by the Nez Perce in They traveled the portion of the ride through the terrain of Montana including beautiful cattle ranches and Half Moon Pass and Ross Pass, enjoying hours of riding followed by catered food and evening presentations, music and dancing while in camp. The Joe as it is commonly referred to, is like a family reunion that happens every July. Riders convene, catching up on their lives since last together. Whether a first time Joe rider or a veteran rider of many years, it is a gathering of friends and a trek of history that becomes a passion to most. CON ApHC riders left camp, tired, excited, and already planning the 2016 ride from Roy, MT to Bear Paw Battlefield. For more information about the ride, visit the ApHC website at or visit Home of the Best! The 2015 Appaloosa World Championship Show confirmed that some of the best horses and exhibitors come from the Center of the Nation! Not only did Carly Wettlaufer s mare, Smart Mate Chex Out, win the top honor of World s Best, the Reserve World s Best award went to another mare owned by CON ApHC members, Danny and Dorine Bennett. Both horses were exhibited by Lee Bennett of KLB Performances, with assistance from Kelly Lind, Casey Wilson, and Sue Scobee. In order to be eligible for these awards, the horses had to be shown in at least 3 of 5 different categories, and earn World s Best points in at least 2. In winning the top honor, Smart Mate Chex Out competed in cattle, reining, halter, and games classes. She was the World Champion in Steer Daubing and had a number of Top 10 placings in other events. Hollywood Rita s reserve standing was the result of placings in cattle, halter, and games classes. She was a World Champion in Rope Race and Junior Judged Heeling with Top 10 placings in other events also. Just out of the points for these awards and standing 3rd was Icons Tequila Mama, another Bennett-owned mare. Also shown by KLB Performance Horses, she was the 2014 World s Best! Ride Em Cowboy! There are so many fun events that our CON ApHC members love to do with their horses! Lee Bennett, Danny Bennett, and Carly Wettlaufer have been found at team roping jackpots this year. Congratulations to Lee for winning a saddle with his team roping partner at a Doblar Arena jackpot. Cattle are also involved in the team sorting competitions and ranch rodeos that some members enjoyed in 2015.
New Homes In 2015 Carly Wettlaufer s mare, Hollywood Annie found a new home. She was sold through the Cattlemens Classic Horse Sale in Kearney, NE. Horses selected for the sale compete in a variety of events in the days prior to the auction, which allows potential buyers to see the horses in action. Annie is now located in Nebraska. Loretta Waltner rescued a colorful appaloosa gelding in He is currently in Louisiana and we are looking forward to seeing him in South Dakota in the future! Dennis and Janelle Stelk of Nebraska purchased Hollywood Pistol from the Bennett s and had a great time at horse shows, trail rides, ranch sortings, and more in 2015! The Johannes family (DeLoWay Farm) sold their yearling gelding, DelowayIndelibMigwan, to Shae Roberts of Iowa. National Representation Several years ago, CON ApHC member, Lori Richards was elected to serve on the ApHC Board of Directors. In 2015, she continued her leadership role as a Director representing Territory I, Zone C, which includes the states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and parts of Canada. Her varied experiences, such as a breeder standing a medallion-winning stallion, a horse show exhibitor in open shows and ApHC shows on the regional and national level, an avid trail rider, a 4-H leader, and a parade participant riding her Appaloosa horse, as well as her enthusiasm and love for the Appaloosa breed, contribute to her value on the board. Thank you, Lori! Other CON ApHC members also served the ApHC in Alice Stewart, representing Territory III, Zone A, and Dorine Bennett, representing Territory I, Zone C, are members of the ApHC Regional Club Advisory Committee reporting to the ApHC BOD. Dorine s husband, Danny, is a past member of the ApHC Non-Pro Advisory Committee. Advisory committees provide feedback, suggestions, questions, and other input to the ApHC BOD. Let s Get to Work! The CON ApHC members have lots of fun with their horses, but they ride them when it is time to work too. Carly Wettlaufer and her gelding, Im A Zip Code Too, helped move 300 head of bred heifers home from being on pasture all summer. Welcome New Foal The Johannes family reported that their good show mare, DeLoWay Grand Star, produced a colored filly in 2015 sired by Zippos Roman Star. The filly, named De- LoWay Roman Star, was shown in weanling classes and earned three national points and regional club awards. They plan to show the filly in the 2016 show seasons in the yearling filly, most colorful, and hunter in hand classes. Best wishes to them on continued success! Scholarship Funding The Chief Joseph Trail Ride Youth Experience (CJTRYE) is a non-profit organization formed in 2014 by Loretta Waltner and Lori Richards. The goal of the CJTRYE is to give youth an opportunity to experience the Chief Joseph Trail Ride by awarding scholarships. The scholarships are for the ride fee, and do not include transportation, horse rental or other expenses. They fund the scholarships by the sale of artwork. In 2014, they were able to award three scholarships selling prints of Nez Perce Women by the artist Susan Hartenhoff-Haygood. The project continued in 2015 with four scholarships awarded, although only three of the recipients were able to attend the ride. Two of the 2015 riders were 1st-time participants on the ride, including CON ApHC member, Maggie Miller. The print that was sold to raise funds, titled Northward Bound, was also created by Susan Hartenhoff-Haygood. Organizers have been asked to expand fundraising to include donations given in memory/honor of people to establish a scholarship with memorial designation. The artist is again working on a picture for the project, related to the Bear Paw surrender. A limited number of prints and canvases from 2014 and 2015 are still available for purchase. For more information or to make a donation, contact CJTRYouthExperience@gmail.com

Here s Some Non-Horsey News Congratulations to Lee Bennett and Kelly Lind of KLB Performance Horses on their November 14, 2015 wedding! It was a wonderful day and a beautiful celebration! They make a great team and we wish them all the best in the future! KLB Performance Horses moved in 2015 to a great facility outside Dannenbrog, NE. With both indoor and outdoor arenas, they are able to continue providing their talented services of training horses and working with non-pro and youth customers. One of our young leadline competitors in the CON ApHC does her running on two feet instead of four! Taya Wettlaufer enjoys the fun and challenges of running distance races, and her mom and sister help her practice. Taya won 1st place in the girls youth division in the Camp Patriot one mile fun run on the 4th of July in Ramona, SD! Go get em girl!! The CON ApHC President, Loretta Waltner, has been working hard on building her new home this year. There have been long hours of effort, and perhaps a few frustrations, but what a joy it will be when she can move in! Terri McCarty, one of the Directors for the CON ApHC, is a very talented artist as well as being an Appaloosa horse enthusiast! In 2015, she spent time working on her beading and other art projects. Over time, she has done custom beadwork for people in South Dakota, Iowa, Kentucky, Washington, and Canada, as well as some murals for customers as far away as Delaware and internationally in Slovia. She can do most any kind of lazy stitch work. Doug Nickel, who has been an active CON ApHC member for many years, is often found at a horse show. Sometimes he is in the arena showing a horse in a variety of classes...more frequently he is found behind the scenes doing whatever tasks he can to help make sure that the shows go smoothly...but even more often he is found outside the arena behind a microphone. In 2015 he was kept busy by announcing at many horse shows. His organizational skills and knowledge of how a horse show happens makes him a popular announcer to hire. Memberships and Points The 2015 CON ApHC membership dues were $30 for family, $20 for single, and $10 for associate. Dues will remain the same for the calendar year 2016 and may be paid at any time. All members will receive newsletters and are included on the CON ApHC website s membership lists. Associate members earn club points for World Show regional qualifications but do not earn year-end awards from the CON ApHC. Members may not earn points until dues are paid. Horse owners and exhibitors must be members of the CON ApHC in order to earn points.
