Growth, Muscle, Carcass and Maternal 3H ranking identifies breed average genetics for the trait, a 4H ranks them within the top 50% to 25% of the breed and a 5H ranks them within the top 25% of the breed genetically for the traits. Information used to develop these rankings includes performance measurements of the individual animal, his sire and his dam, EPD s and ultrasound data. 7 NEW GENERATION EPDS In the spring of 2012 the American Simmental and Red Angus associations merged their data bases and EPD calculations. This created a new base and the EPD numbers changed but the relationship of one animal to another did not change. This allowed Simmental and Red Angus genetics to be compared on the same base. In the late summer of 2012 the American Association contracted with the American Simmental Association to run the AGA National Cattle Evaluation and produce their sire summary and breed EPD calculations. After some research, it was decided to adopt the Simmental/Red Angus multi-breed National Cattle Evaluation and use the same base so that all three breeds could be compared for most traits. The American Association s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on this new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Here are a few highlights of the changes: EPDs for,, Simmental, SimAngus, and Red Angus can be directly compared to one another, Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs reflected as percentages of unassisted births, True multi-breed EPDs provide more complete EPDs, Growth traits are more reliable with wider age window for weaning weight, Carcass traits are standardized to an age-adjusted endpoint like the rest of the industry. Benefits of New EPD Process The move to American Simmental Association was recommended by the AGA Productivity committee and approved by the AGA Board of Directors in October, Here are the primary benefits: Benefit: Higher accuracy WW EPDs. How: The addition of historical and future weaning weight records to the NCE analysis by including early weaned calves. AGA member action: Submit early weaned data, past, present and future. Benefit: Increased EPD accuracies for and percentage animals. How: The joint analysis with the ASA will include a larger database of Angus and Red Angus animals. AGA member action: None. Benefit: Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs calculated for and animals How: CE and CED EPDs will be calculated using a multi-breed model that includes Angus EPDs for CE and CED in the model, as well as the entire Red Angus database. All animals with registered Angus or Red Angus in their pedigrees will now have CE and CED EPDs listed. AGA member action: Continue to submit Calving Ease scores on all calves. Benefit: Development of geneomic-enhanced EPDs. How: Inclusion of genomic data to create genomic-enhanced EPDs planned for Summer 2013, the primary goal of the AGA Genomic Pioneers project. AGA member action: DNA test (50K or GGP) all herd bull, AI sire and donor dam prospects. Benefit: Standardize our carcass EPDs with other breeds. How: Carcass data will be age adjusted instead of fat adjusted. AGA member action: None. Benefit: Higher accuracy marbling EPDs. How: Bull IMF scan data will be included in the calculation of marbling EPDs. AGA member action: Scan all sale bulls and replacement heifers using a certified technician. 8 FLYING H GENETICS DISPOSITION SCORING Because disposition is a very important management and safety issue, Flying H Genetics has researched and developed a system to score all of their cattle, including any cattle sold for breeding purposes, for disposition to eliminate the unacceptable ones. We have been culling on disposition for years but scoring them quantifies and indentifies them more accurately making culling more accurate and effective. Cattle are a herd instinct animal. Seperate them from the herd and their natural response is to flee back to the group or fight for their life. Domesticating them has gentled them but their natural instincts of flight and fight are still there at varying degrees Generally, the sooner and more often cattle are in contact with and handled by humans in a calm, nonthreatening way, the more trusting and less flighty or threatened they will feel. Knowing this, our system separates an individual animal from the group into a small pen with one or two people to add a common stressor. Since all cattle have a different disposition (just like people) this will create different degrees of nervousness, flight and fight that can be scored. Scoring the different levels of nervousness, flight and fight allows us to identify different levels of disposition. The scores range from 1 to 5 with 5 being the most calm. This is a subjective score but certain actions help group the cattle into the five different levels. Following is a general discription of the type of actions observed while scoring that help rank each individuals disposition. One Star animal is very nervous and agitated and is looking for an escape route. Will not stop and stand, tests the fence and will show fight and turn on you if pressed. When the out gate is opened he leaves on the run. He s always at the back of a group, head up and keeps his distance. He will make others nervous and flighty and is hard to sort from the group. Anything new will create great distress and he will get more agitated the longer he s held seperately. Due to safety issues these are culled immediately. Two Star animal is nervous and very uncomfortable. He will keep moving, walking the fence and trot or run if approached. Not as likely to show fight but will exit fast. Very observant and keeps his distance even in a group. He will be a little hard to sort from the group. He s always nervous and flighty in a strange situation. He presents a safety concern and causes handling problems with the whole herd so is culled asap. Three Star animal is uncomfortable wanting to keep distance. He will stop but is very attentive and moves without much pressure. He ll exit at a fast walk or slight trot. Handles fine in a group but gets nervous when seperated, wanting to rejoin the herd. Can get excited if pressured or forced out of comfort zone so low stress, low pressure handling helps. Four Star animal moves when pressure is applied but will stop easily. Will stand and allow you to approach but not get too close. Exits at a walk. Fast movements, load noises and strange situations will make him nervous. Low stress handling works great. Five Star animal is very calm and gentle, easy to sort and move. Will stand, allow you to approach and maybe touch him and may even approach you. Needs to be urged to leave the pen. Can get excited but calms down quickly. Responds well to proper handling. ROUGHAGE N READY means our bulls and females are developed on roughage diets to make sure they can make a living on roughages. Over 10% fail this forage ability test. Beef cattle have four stomachs to convert roughages (straw, corn stalks, hay, grass, etc.) into usable energy and protein to produce, reproduce and supply us with great tasting beef. Try feeding hogs or chickens or fish some straw and see what happens. Developing bulls and heifers on roughages trains them to forage and work for their food and helps us identify those that cannot survive without a corn bucket so we can eliminate them before marketing them as breeding stock. In Nebraska we use grass, straw, corn stalks, cane hay, silage and wet distiller s grains as roughages for our rations. In Missouri, the bulls are Grown On Grass (fescue) year around with dried distiller s grains and other by products like soy hulls to supplement the protein and energy the grass lacks during parts of the year. Even if we do feed corn to produce premier corn-fed beef products, most of their life is spent converting roughages to beef. We have engineered these genetics since 1994 (19 years) and know how to blend and Angus to complement and enhance the resulting genetics to benefit the entire beef industry. Notice the number of AI and ET calves. We put tremendous effort into our composite program to make sure they are the best we can offer. There are some very popular bulls from both breeds we will not use because they don t fit our strict genetic requirements. For example, several Angus bulls carry too much frame and milk and some bulls don t have enough marbling to meet our standards. You ll notice there are very few 3 star (average) genetic ratings for growth, muscle, carcass and maternal on bulls in this catalog. That is not by accident and is only possible because of our disciplined breeding program over the past 30+ years. 23 Identifying Heifer Bulls Because of the interest in, need for, and importance of correctly identifying bulls to be used on first calf heifers, Flying H Genetics has developed a 5 STAR SYSTEM. This system ranks bulls we believe (and guarantee) will work on heifers and not cause above normal calving difficulty due to size and shape of the calf. A One Star bull should work on larger, well-developed heifers with above average pelvic measurements. Three Star bulls increase the comfort level and degree of calving ease and can be used in most heifer development situations. Five Star heifer bulls give exceptional calving ease with little assistance expected, except in abnormal presentations, etc. All bulls offered by Flying H Genetics that qualify to be guaranteed as heifer bulls will be identified by the 5 Star System. Even this system cannot guarantee every heifer bred to these bulls will calve unassisted. There are at least 16 different criterion that affect calving ease 1 Star Heifer Bull 3 Star Heifer Bull 5 Star Heifer Bull with birth weight being the largest factor. Other factors like sex of calf, shape of calf and size of bone, condition score of heifer, age of heifer, feed protein level, weather prior to and during calving, the heifers genetics for calving ease and birth weight, gestation length, heterosis, pelvic opening size and presentation of calf all affect calving ease. The 5 Star System is not perfect but it will eliminate most problems caused by the genetics of the bulls breeding the heifers. And if we find one that doesn t work and he is guaranteed for calving ease on heifers with our 5 Star System we will replace him with another bull of your choice with full credit from the original bull. It s not perfect, but it is one of the best systems and guarantees you ll find anywhere. Since we sell cattle nationwide, fuel and equipment costs force us to put some limits on free delivery. The seed stockbusiness, like all other businesses, must address the costs of product delivery as part of their overall customer service plan. To treat every customer fairly, we have established the following delivery policy: A. Every animal valued over $2,000 will be delivered free within 200 miles of sale location. B. All other animals valued over $2,000 will be delivered the first 200 miles free with additional miles prorated per head with freight charges guaranteed not to exceed $250 per head. C. After some confusion over the old warranty and interest by many customers to cover the full cost of their purchases at a reasonable cost, we have initiated the following new warranty. COVERAGE/LIMITATIONS The coverage of this warranty is limited to the first breeding season or a maximum of 6 months from the date of purchase, unless other arrangements are made ahead of time. Indemnity under this warranty covers all death and loss-of-use injuries except those caused by negligence or willful misconduct or mistreatment of the bulls covered. Replacement value will be limited to actual purchase cost of the Flying H Genetics bull covered minus any salvage value or other compensation received by the customer. CLAIMS All claims for death or injury must be reported to Flying H Genetics within 24 hours of discovery and a complete diagnosis by a licensed veterinarian must be reported. INJURED If the injury is not life threatening or permanent and the bull can be returned to service, Flying H Genetics will work with the customer to supply a replacement bull to use at no cost, until the original bull can be returned to service. LOSS DUE TO INJURY If the injury is permanent and prevents the bull from returning to service, Flying H Genetics will supply a replacement bull as close to the original bull s type and quality as possible to complete the first breeding season. At the end of the breeding season, the customer can keep the bull as the replacement bull as fulfillment of this warranty or return him to Flying H Genetics and receive credit on a replacement in next year s sale. The credit will equal the price of the original bull minus salvage value if any from the original bull. The customer agrees to provide humane care and obtain maximum salvage value from the injured bull. This guarantees the customer a bull to get their cows bred and full compensation for the purchase price of the bull through a replacement they get to pick and price. LOSS DUE TO DEATH When a Flying H Genetics bull dies between the date of purchase and the end of the first breeding season, through no fault of the customer as described above, Flying H Genetics will supply a replacement bull, as close to the original bull s type and quality as possible, to finish out the breeding season. At the end of the breeding season, the customer can either keep the replacement bull as fulfillment of this warranty or return him to Flying H Genetics and receive credit on a replacement in next year s sale. This credit will equal the purchase price of the original bull minus any compensation received if insured by an insurance company. This guarantees the customer a bull to get their cows bred and full compensation for the purchase price of the bull through a replacement they get to pick and price. COST Cost for the death and injury warranty will be 5% of purchase price, due at the time of purchase. If a customer chooses not to cover their animal against death and injury, they assume all loss due to death or injury of their bull. This warranty does not affect other customer services like the customer satisfaction and calving ease guarantees that all Flying H Genetics bulls carry.
