This is also a great time to set your goals for the H year. Please take note of the changes to awards for this year and the year. 2 Post-Fair Youth & 4-H Committee The Youth & 4-H Committee is seeking new members for the H year. It is highly recommended that every club be represented by one adult and one youth (grades 7-12). Applications are available at the Extension Office. Contact me with questions or to join the committee. THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who donated a manure spreader for the county fair. It would be a very stinky mess without your help! Thank you for helping to keep our fairgrounds a more pleasant place for visitors. Herdsmanship Winners 4-H FOOD BOOTH We had a fantastic year at the food booth! Thank you to everyone who signed up and donated items to be sold. Thank you to Mary Gordon, Darla Millhollin, and all of the clubs and volunteers for their time, pies, and brownies. We were able to earn funds to support the 4-H Youth Committee, which in turn funds your programs, training, and trips. WAY TO GO! POP TAB UPDATE Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to collect pop tabs for the Madison County Youth Council and Jacy McAlexander. Winners will be announced in the September Clover Connections. Thank you to all of the 4-H and FFA members for their hard work keeping the livestock barns clean for fairgoers. Even though it was hot, you kept up on aisle duty and picking stalls. It makes visitors feel welcome when they aren t worried about what they re walking through. It was a pretty tight race for this year s awards. It means that you are all working hard for your club or chapter s reputation of winning herdsmanship. 3 Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show The AKSARBEN Stock Show, currently the largest 4-H Stock Show in the United States, is a regional show open to 4-H members from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. This year, the Ak-Sar-Ben stock show will be held September at the Five Points Bank Arena in Grand Island, NE. General admission is free. Entries for the 2018 Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show are due to the AKSARBEN Stock Show office by Friday, August 31, Entry forms can be found at: A 4-H Fable Don t forget to send your Madison County Fair helpers thank you notes! 4 YOUTH 4-H OPPORTUNITIES 4-H National Youth Science Day 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) is an annual program that provides access and opportunity for kids everywhere to take an interest in STEM topics (science, technology engineering and math) by participating in a hands-on STEM challenge. The national 4-H NYSD events will take place on October 4, Code Your World consists of one computer-based activity on Google s CS First platform, using MIT s Scratch programming language, and three unplugged activities that bring coding to life through games and interaction. It's perfect for first-time and beginner coders ranging in age from 8 to 14 and will teach kids important computer science (CS) concepts problem-solving skills. Science kits for the 2018 National Science Experiment are available for order from the 4-H Mall. If you would like help coordinating a local event, please contact the Extension Office. Join the Madison County Youth Council The Madison County Youth Council is seeking new members in grades The Youth Council is for all youth interested in getting involved and making a difference. These youth help with programming throughout the year and represent their club at the county level. If you would like to be a part of the Madison County Youth Council or would like to learn more information, the first meeting for the year will be held at the Madison County Extension Office on Sunday, September 23rd at 6:00 p.m. We hope to see you there! 4-H Re-Enrollment for The H year begins in September, with reenrollment opening September 1. This year, enrollment fees will be $40, paid to the Extension Office or online via credit card. Visit after September 1st to enroll for the H year! Remember, all volunteers must also re-enroll. Don t Forget your Record Book Record Books and award applications are due to the Extension Office by Friday, September 21st at 4:30 p.m. Pages and awards applications are available for pick-up at the office. Traditional record book covers are available for purchase for $3 each. 5 Global Citizenship Day: Iowa State Fair On Thursday, August 16th, the 4-H building will host the 3rd annual Global Citizenship Day. This is a great opportunity for 4-Hers to teach others about global citizenship and learn about different cultures. We are inviting clubs and members to participate in the day by creating a project for the global citizenship category, displaying an interactive booth, reading some poetry about global citizenship, or putting on a cultural demonstration. State Fair Carcass Viewing State Fair carcass viewing will take place on Saturday, August 25 at 3:00 p.m. A short orientation will be held in Lush Auditorium located in ISU Kildee Hall, room 0125, at 3:00 p.m. From there, the group will go to the meat lab to view the champion and reserve champion carcasses from the 4-H and FFA market shows held during state fair. This is a great educational opportunity! Mark Your Calendars The 2018 Awards Banquet will be held on Monday, November 5th, in the Jackson Building on the Madison County Fairgrounds. New 4-H families, returning 4-H families, and volunteers are welcome to attend. Food will be served starting at 6 p.m. with awards starting at 7 p.m. We hope to see you there! Keep An Eye Out Be on the lookout for information coming from the Extension Office on club audits and Club Officer Training in October! H Youth in Action Awards National 4-H Council is looking for 4-H members with a passion for Agriculture, Citizenship, Healthy Living, or STEM to tell their stories through the H Youth in Action Awards. The application will be open August 1 October 22, You can start encouraging youth in your community to learn more and prepare to apply now! Contact National 4 -H Council for more details. Fair Thank Yous We would like to take a moment to recognize all of our dedicated volunteers who make a difference in the lives of our youth through Extension 4-H Youth Programs and the Madison County Fair. Thank you to the Madison County Fair & Livestock Association for providing the venue for our amazing youth to showcase their talents and projects. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped with countless activities, and to the superintendents who volunteered their time to help these youth grow in their project areas. Thank you to all our trophy and award sponsors. Thank you to the leaders, who coordinated so much at the fair. Thank you to our clubs, who volunteered countless hours for fair set-up and tear down. Thank you for working in the 4-H Food Stand and hosting in the Jackson Building. Finally, thank you to everyone we forgot to thank above without you, we couldn t have done it. Fair is a community activity, and it takes everyone to make it great! Post Fair Thanks to all who joined us at the Post Fair Meeting that was held on Thursday, August 2nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Madison County Extension Office. We had a great discussion on what went well and what we could improve on for the 2019 Madison County Fair. Thanks for sharing your ideas so that we can continue to make the best even better! Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Donors Thank you to those who donated money for the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference! Because of your contributions, several youth from Madison County were able to attend the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference at a reduced cost. These youth spent three days on the Iowa State University campus where they listened to keynote speakers, took part in workshops and community service, attended dances, and made friends from all over the state of Iowa. 4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH 6
