1 Liverpool Big Weekend Liverpool Urban Sunday 7 th October Final Details All competitors take part at their own risk & are responsible for their own safety. The event takes place around University of Liverpool, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and Liverpool John Moores University, This event is part of the UK Urban League (sponsored by CompassSport and BML print) and is part of the UK O League. Assembly University of Liverpool Sports and Fitness Centre. (postcode L69 7ZN). Travel Directions There is likely to be a lot more traffic and busier public transport than is normal for a Sunday because of the Giants visiting Liverpool this weekend. There will be road closures in place and changes to train services. What follows takes into account changes published at the time of writing (24th Sept.); if anything is announced later which affects these directions, we will notify you via the blog: From Southport /Formby follow A565 then A5758 then A59 into Liverpool. After crossing the approach roads for the Wallasey tunnel, turn left (signed for M6, M62). (then as below) From Chester and North Wales. From the M53 take the Wallasey Tunnel. At the exit, follow for Manchester M62. (then as below) Or from somewhere else on the Wirral take the Birkenhead Tunnel. At the exit, turn left then right (signed M6, M62). (then as below) All routes: You are now on a dual carriageway which splits, comes back together, then splits again (Office Outlet / Halfords): at this point, keep to the right (M6, M62) then take a left- hand lane to go straight. Keep straight on through two sets of lights; turn right (University of Liverpool / cathedrals) at the 3rd set. 2nd left (after Blackwell s) leads into Peach St. car- park. From North: M6 then M62 will avoid travelling through the city centre. From the end of the M62 continue W on the A5080 (follow brown signs for Waterfront or green signs for Wallasey ). After about 2.8 miles turn left at lights (green sign Liverpool Women s Hospital / University of Liverpool ) then right ( University of Liverpool / cathedrals ) at the next set. 2nd left (after Blackwell s) leads into Peach St. car- park.

2 Parking There are several surface parking options around the University see parking/ and note the parking charges, then click through to the campus map. By far the most convenient is on Peach Street, accessed from the north off Brownlow Hill, nearest post code L3 5UH. It is identified with a blue figure 13 in square E5 of the campus map. The Sports Centre is building 511 to the SW. There is also one at the Cathedral ( 5 all day, closing at 6pm) accessed on Mount Pleasant. Please note that courses cross the area, so take care and watch out for competitors if you arrive late or leave early. Train Mainline Lime Street Station is Liverpool s main national rail terminus, with main line trains to and from Manchester, London, Scotland and the rest of the UK. National Rail Enquiries (Tel ) can assist with specific train timings. The University Sports and Fitness Centre is about 15 minutes walk from the station. According to the published information, you will be forced to go out through the right- hand exit (Lord Nelson Street exit 3). When you reach the street, turn left and left again into Lime St. itself (station on your left, St. George s Hall on your right). Head straight on for 450m, passing the Crown Hotel on your left. Pass in front of the Adelphi Hotel and take the left fork (Mount Pleasant). You pass the catholic cathedral after 300m. After a further 150m you pass the university Sports and Fitness Centre (white, concrete, sloping wall) on your left. Turn left immediately after the building. Merseyrail This will be affected by station closures and will be running to a special timetable. Full details of these are here: spectacular.aspx Liverpool Central Station will only be open to trains on the Wirral Line. From Liverpool Central Station, pass through the ticket barrier and keep straight on; turn right when you get to the street (Ranelagh St). At the top of the road, follow the pavement around to the right for another 50m to the pelican crossing. Cross to the other side of the road, turn left then bear right around the end of the building into Mount Pleasant. Go up Mount Pleasant. You pass the catholic cathedral after 300m. After a further 150m you pass the university Sports and Fitness Centre (white, concrete, sloping wall) on your left. Turn left immediately after the building. If travelling on the Northern Line (i.e. the lines from Southport/Formby, Ormskirk, Kirkby, Parkway) get off at Moorfields Station (the train will not stop at Liverpool Central) and follow the walking map downloadable from the event blog site to Liverpool Central Station (800m). From there, follow the directions above and map below to the university Sports and Fitness Centre.

3 Photographs Steve Rush (BOK) and Peter Cull (MDOC) will be taking photographs during the event. Steve has been the official photographer for many club and BOF events, most recently at the British Sprint/Middle Distance Championships and Hanley UKUL. Photographs can be viewed at Peter has, over the years taken photographs at many North West orienteering and other sports events. His photographs can be viewed at Parents/guardians not wishing to have photographs of children taken while on their runs, please inform the photographer on the day. (Photos of Children/Juniors can only be used in Promotional material if it has been granted permission by the Parent or Guardian). Adult competitors not wanting photos taken should also inform the photographer and they will be deleted. Format of the race The event consists of 2 sprint races (total time to count for final results). There are two starts, one for each race. Competitors will be allocated which course they run first when start times are pre- allocated. Half the runners will do their first race from the North start and the other half will do their first race from the South start. This has allowed us to reduce the timescale of the race and also the time competitors would need to wait if this had followed the traditional prologue/final format. In the junior classes, all competitors will run the courses from the North start first.

4 Facilities at Assembly The Assembly area is at University of Liverpool Sports and Fitness Centre. (postcode L69 7ZN). There is an indoor area suitable for changing and leaving clothes and belongings. Although it will be supervised by club members, it is not a secure area. Bags are left at your own risk. There are also lockers (padlock required) if a secure area is required. Registration, enquiries and download will be available in the same sports hall. Toilets are also available in this building. Please be aware that there is an afternoon booking for the area that we are using and the area has to be cleared by 2pm. Traders: Compass Point will be in attendance (inside the sports hall) for all your orienteering needs. There are several different options locally for food. SI cards - If you have hired an SI- Card for the day, please come to Enquiries at Assembly to collect it. Hired SI- Air Cards are only available to those who requested them in advance on pre- entry. All hired SI cards MUST be handed in to the organising team ON THE DAY of final use at download even if you retire during the event. This is an essential safety requirement of the event and failure to do so could result in an unnecessary search. There will be a charge for any non- returned cards. Race numbers These are NOT your Fabian4 entry number. A separate number will be allocated for the event. Details of allocated numbers will be available at An alphabetical list will also be available at registration/enquiries. ALL competitors must collect their race number from Enquiries either on Saturday at Formby or on Sunday at Liverpool. Race bibs are required to be worn for safety reasons. They ensure that competitors are recognised as taking part in an official event. The number will have the Organiser s contact number in case of emergencies. COMPETITORS should complete emergency information on the reverse. Entry on the Day Entry on the Day is available at registration (subject to LIMITED map availability). BUT we encourage anyone wanting to enter after the closing date for online entry to the entries secretary at orienteeringj@gmail.com to reserve a map in advance, again subject to map availability. Only standard SI cards are available to hire on the day ( 1). 5 Start Procedure There will be two starts (make sure you go to the correct start for your first race). North (300m from Assembly) for courses 1N to 6N. South (100m from Assembly) for courses 1S to 6S. Routes to the starts will be taped from Assembly (the University Sports Centre) and you can collect a route map from enquiries. Start times for the 1st race are A link to the start times is at For adult courses the start time list is ordered eg N- Men Open or S- Men Open to identify which start to go to for your first run. All competitors on the Junior and Young Junior courses run their first race from the North Start. To work out your second race start time add 80 minutes to your first race start time. Both starts 4 minute call up Please follow the direction of the start officials. Blank maps and control descriptions will be available in the start lane There are very few spare start slots. Anyone missing their first race start time will be started at the discretion of the start officials. Anyone missing their first race start slot MUST start their second race at the time of their first race plus 80 minutes. A punching start and finish will be used. Then pick up your map from the correct box and go! Start and Finish boxes are NOT SIAC enabled. ALL competitors must punch both start and finish. All courses close at 1.30pm Finish and Download Maps will be collected after the first run (since competitors are running from both starts concurrently) and will then be available for collection from Registration after competitors download of the second run. In the spirit of fairness, please do not share your courses with those yet to run. There is one finish for all courses, adjacent to the University Sports Centre Ensure you punch at the finish control to record your time. Start and Finish boxes are NOT SIAC enabled. ALL competitors must punch both start and finish. ** You must download even if you retire ** After each race, please return to Download at the University Sports Centre and ensure that you follow the directions of the SI team when you download. Surveyed May 2016, updated April 2018 with a final check for changes (particularly building sites) September Please note the following points: 1) Pavement edges are shown only on those roads likely to be carrying significant traffic or where they could be of use for navigation. If using a road with pavements shown, please take particular care of traffic. 2) Impassable fences are often shown as impassable walls tags have been omitted for clarity. For the same reason, crossable fences sometimes lack tags. If you are unfamiliar with the ISSOM map symbols (as used on sprint maps) you are recommended to read through pages 9 to 23 of this: ALL competitors are reminded of the following symbols: The impassable vegetation symbol has been used, in many cases, to indicate flower beds which MUST NOT be crossed even if this looks feasible. Note that the word 'impassable' means THOU SHALT NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CROSSING IT. That includes sneaky little tricks like using a boomerang to waft your dibber over the control from the other side! In common with all urban events, it is entirely possible that you may find a gate, open on the day, which we expected to be closed. There is no ambiguity in the rules on this: if the map says impassable, you must not go through we do not have permission from the landowner to use that gate. Courses and Terrain The area is predominantly pedestrianised university campus and cathedral precinct. There may be occasional moving vehicles on access roads within the site. Four more significant public roads cross the area which will be carrying traffic: these roads have been shown with the pavement edge symbol on the map as a warning to take particular care. However, keep your wits about you at all times. Please be considerate and careful of other pedestrians, particularly on legs passing the cathedral, and of cyclists and take blind corners wide. The four junior classes cross two of the public roads, one on each course. In each case they will have a supervised, timed- out road crossing which is a pelican crossing. Competitors should wait on their side of

7 the road until the marshal indicates it is safe to cross. There is a control as you arrive and a second one as you leave: your time between these controls (up to a maximum of 2 minutes) will be deducted. Competitors in all other classes cross the same roads obliquely, to give you time to pick a suitable gap in any traffic: it is your responsibility to cross roads safely. Description sheets Pictorial descriptions are printed on the map for all courses. Loose description sheets will be available in the start lanes: competitors in the Young Junior classes (i.e. course 4) will be able to select either text or pictorial. Clothing Full body cover is NOT required shorts may be worn. As almost all of the area is paved, wear trainers or similar. Punching Controls will be SIAC enabled for the sprint races. SI and SIAC contactless dibbers may be used but SIAC users MUST physically punch start and finish. Each control will also carry a pin punch: in the event of electronic failure, use this to punch your map and report it at Download.
