Relay Registration Declarations can now be made on fabian4.co.uk up until Thursday evening. Final team declarations will be accepted from 19:00 until 22:00 at the registration tent, where there will be paper forms available. SI Cards can be hired if necessary. Each team will receive a bag with any last minute details and numbers. SI Punching. SI punching will be used for all events. Only version 5 and 6 e-cards can be used (numbers up to ). The last leg in the A relay must use a series 6 e-card due to the number of controls. SI numbers will be checked at relay map issue. Map/GPS Issue Maps can be collected once your proceeding leg runner has gone out. Maps are sealed and should not be opened until after the start/ changeover. Teams selected for carrying a GPS unit will also given their device at this time.

Live GPS Tracking This year s Harvesters has the capability of tracking up to 10 teams at a time. The way this has been divided up is shown below. The teams designated to wear GPS units for certain legs will be displayed at map/gps issue. We are not forcing anyone to wear one. Team names, not individual names, will be displayed on the tracking website and at the Event Centre. A Relay Leg 1 10 teams Leg 3 5 teams Leg 5 5 teams Leg 7 5 teams B Relay Leg 1 5 teams Leg 3 5 teams Leg 5 5 teams The teams whose first leg runners will wear GPS units will be decided by the organisers via a process of seeding. The lists of these teams will be displayed in the assembly area and at map issue. First leg runners should collect their devices 20 minutes prior to the start of the relay, from the map/gps issue area. The GPS units are approximately 8x4.5x3cm in dimension and a harness will be supplied to carry it. Normally this harness can be worn over the top of a battery harness but in some circumstances it may be possible to place the GPS unit in the competitors battery harness. The designation of GPS units to leg 3, 5 and 7 runners is likely to follow the method shown below. This should provide enough time for the units to be checked and transferred. The organisers will deviate from this in the interests of creating a better spectator experience. A definite list of GPS tracked teams will be clearly displayed at map/gps issue. A Relay Leg 1 10 teams (seeded) Leg 3 5 teams (top 5 teams after leg 1) Leg 5 5 teams (top 5 teams after leg 3) Leg 7 5 teams (top 5 teams after leg 5) B Relay Leg 1 5 teams (seeded) Leg 3 5 teams (top 5 teams after leg 1) Leg 5 5 teams (top 5 teams after leg 3)

First Leg Starts From Assembly A Race - Call up 11:50 Start 12:00 B Race - Call up 1:20 Start 1:30 Don t forget your spare torch and GPS unit, if issued with one. Change Over procedure There are four radio controls around the course which will help to give advance notice of all runners. The penultimate radio control is also a spectator control (located 150m away from the finish/change over, so it may be hard to identify people at night). After this competitors will run another m before appearing at the change over. The final radio is located at the last control and will give a final 30 second warning. The finish punch will be located after the hand over line and competitors should then proceed to download. Start There are 2 start kites. The start kite that each leg should go to is shown on the layout map and will be clearly displayed in the changeover area. The Ecclesall Woods start kite is adjacent to the changeover and the Limb Valley start kite is 500 metres from the changeover. Finish Final leg runners will be counted across the finish line to give the actual team positions. You must however still punch at the finish after crossing the finish line. Your map and any hired SI Cards will be collected at the download. Maps will be sorted by team and made available for reclaim shortly after the last mini-mass start. Gaffelling Gaffelled for legs A1, A2, A4, A5, A6, A7, B1, B2, B4, and B5. Runners on the A relay third leg will have butterfly loop(s). The third leg on the B relay will not be gaffelled. Mini Mass Starts These will take place from the changeover area. There will be a number of these as the race progresses. If the races proceed as anticipated we would expect the following approximate schedule. 2:00 Remaining A leg 2 runners 3:00 Remaining A leg 3 runners; Remaining B leg 2 runners 4:00 Remaining B leg 3 runners; 5:00 Remaining B leg 4 runners; Remaining A leg 4 runners 6:00 Remaining B leg 5 runners; Remaining A leg 5 runners 7:00 Remaining A leg 6 and 7 runners Teams in the mini mass start will remain competitive.

Live GPS and Radio Control Display Live GPS and radio control will be displayed in the main marquee adjacent to the finish. We hope the positioning of the marquee will allow spectators to view results screens as well as watch the spectator and finish controls. The maps displaying the live GPS trace will be modified so as not to give away too much of the courses to later runners but still to give a quality viewing experience to spectators. We have tried to take the best of these and put them into practice for the competitors in this year's Harvester. In planning we have tried our best to get a good balance between a great course for each runner and a great spectator element for those watching. We have had many different course trials but we believe that finally these are the courses which best suit the event.

The map has been recently updated by Kris Jones to show the summer growth of vegetation, which is considerably less than many other areas which become unusable in the summer months, and to change it from sprint specification (ISSOM) to forest specification (ISOM). Whilst Limb Valley is only separated from Ecclesall Woods by a road there is quite a difference in the terrain that the competitor will experience. Limb Valley is considerably steeper than Ecclesall Woods and the boulders are significantly bigger than those encountered in Ecclesall Woods. The depressions and pits are also smaller than in many other parts of Ecclesall Woods. The map reflects this and so some features that are mapped in Ecclesall Woods would not be mapped if they were in Limb Valley. Both areas have many holly bushes which are well mapped but it may be difficult to identify the edges of them in the dark. There are many small paths in Ecclesall Woods which can be easily missed if competitors are not paying close attention. The area is very fast which is the reason why the courses are longer than previous Harvesters. However, the area is still tricky and so must be treated with respect. Due to the constraints of the area with two large roads running through it some controls may be visited more than once to allow safe crossing of the roads. Competitors should check their codes and make sure they read their map carefully to avoid missing out a control, or running to the wrong one. Control codes will be printed next to the control number on the map. An example of this would be 6-71, or 9/15-55 if a control is visited twice. Control descriptions will also be printed on the map as well. The style of planning is a mix of traditional Scandinavian relay and more modern middle distance style planning. Competitors should be prepared for long legs, macro and micro route choices of both long and short distances, high and dense gaffling and as well as big pack splitting controls. There will be areas of faster running with vague navigation and areas of slow more technical controls. This combination of challenges will mean for sure that the team who runs the courses fastest by both running quickly and making few mistakes will win. Protests Any competitor who wishes to make a complaint should discuss the matter with the Organiser. If the competitor is not happy after the Organiser s decision he/she can raise a protest. Protests should be addressed to the Controller in writing. The protest will be dealt with in accordance with BOF Rule 9.3. If required, a jury will be convened and a written report made. We ask competitors to be courteous and not abusive in discussing their complaints. Controllers Comment The race will be run under BOF rules. The spirit of the competition is for as many teams to complete as possible. If the competition is disrupted (e.g. a control is stolen) the organisers may remove legs or laps to secure a result.

Prize Giving The prize giving will take place as soon as possible after all 7 class winners have finished, this will hopefully be about Prizes will be awarded according to British Orienteering Guidelines for the Harvester Relays. The trophies for the winning teams in the 2011 UK Relay League may also be presented. 10 Harvester Urban Event Dore Sunday 17 th July Location Dore Village, south west Sheffield. Adjacent to the Harvester Relays area for Car parking will be at the same location as the Relays. Postcode S17 3ES. Grid Reference SK Competitors arriving just for the urban race should park on the hardstanding labeled camper vans and urban race on the map above. Harvester competitors staying on do not need to move their car. Start There are no allocated start times. The start is a 1.5km walk from the car park and Harvester assembly, which will be taped. We did try to reduce this but were unable to plan suitable junior courses from any other location. The finish is also in the same place. Finish Same location as the start. Download will be back at the car park. Terrain and Planner s Comments Ensconced on the South-West of Sheffield, bounded by exquisite Eccleshall [sp] Woods to the North east (a premier Yorkshire Orienteering venue - I believe there's an event there the night before, you'll have to check though!), Blackamoor and the Peak District to the West, Dore, situated on a gently south-facing slope culminating in the river Sheaf, is an affluent suburb of Sheffield, its name being derived from its 'gateway' position at the confluence of the river Sheaf and the brooks Limb and Meers, signifying the boundary between the Anglo- Saxon Kingdoms of Mercia and Deira. Famous residents include Michael Vaughn, Dave Basset, Gary Megson and Chris Waddle - so hosting a sporting event here seems fit! Newly mapped by British EYOC M16 squadie (and regular purveyor of results-based humble pie to seniors) and Dore resident Aiden Smith. All senior courses will include route-choice around Olive Green, small wooded areas, intricate housing estate and a former school, with older juniors experiencing all but the former in varying amounts - manned road crossings allowing M/W16s access to the most technical areas of the map, whilst a course for younger junior will be provided within the exciting and challenging former school. Make sure you hang around once finished to watch some sleep-deprived competitors be caught out in the final, visible-to-all loop! Entry on the Day in the car park Senior 9 ( 7 British Orienteering Member) Junior/Student 3

Family 2 adults and up to 4 children 21 ( 17 British Orienteering Members) Courses Courses and classes are based on the Yorkshire Urban League system ( m).
