2 On behalf of the Board of Governors, I am pleased to welcome all student-athletes and coaches to the Metropolitan Field to participate in the NSSAF Track and Field Championships. Track and Field enjoys one of the highest participation rates of any school sport and the Federation congratulates all of you for having qualified through District and Regional competition. During the opening ceremony you listened to the Athlete*s Pledge which stated: *When representing my school at an interscholastic competition, I pledge to: Display honour and dignity at all times. To treat opponents, coaches, officials and spectators with respect. To respect the judgment and integrity of the officials. To compete in a spirit of fair play and to graciously accept victory or defeat.* These words capture one of the primary purposes of educational sport. They set the standard for everyone involved with school sport and I encourage each of you to adhere to these values and to take pride in doing so. I wish to thank Meet Director Tom Fahie and his committee members from the Metro High School Athletic Association as well as all the other volunteer officials from throughout the province. We simply could not have this event without your support. To all involved, we hope you enjoy the Meet and share in the good will and spirit of fair play to which we all subscribe. 5 RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. Age Classification for competition shall be: Senior (Girls and Boys) Under 19 as of September 30, 2000 Intermediate (Girls and Boys) Under 16 as of September 30, 2000 Junior (Girls and Boys) Under 14 as of September 30, (a.) A competitor may only compete in one class. Note: (b.) A competitor must compete in his/her event at the Regional Level in order to qualify for the NSSAF Championships. 3. A competitor may enter a maximum of six events, including relays. 4. Regional Representation: (a) The first four placings in the hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m and the first five in all other events shall advance to the Provincial Meet. (b) Four relay teams per classification. 5. Points will be awarded according to the following: Individual Events Relays 1st th - 7 1st th - 7 2nd th - 6 2nd th - 6 3rd - 9 7th - 5 3rd - 9 7th - 5 4th - 8 8th - 4 4th - 8 8th - 4 Note: In order to receive points for a track event, a student must compete and finish in a final. In order to receive points for a field event, a student must register a measured throw or jump. 6. In throwing and jumping - for distance events, each competitor will be given three (3) trials - the top eight will then be given three (3) more trials. SHOT PUT: Senior Boys kg. (12 lbs.) Junior Girls kg. ( 6 lbs.) All Other Classes kg. (8 lbs. 13 oz.) DISCUS: Senior Boys and Intermediate Boys kg. (3 lbs. 9 oz.) Junior Boys and All Girls Classes - 1 kg. 6 7. The 800 m shall be run in timed sections. The top three from each region will compete in the second section. The remaining competitors will compete in the first section. The final placings will be determined by times from the timed sections. The first curve will be run in lanes. 8. The 1500, 3000, and 5000 m shall be run as finals. 9. No unnecessary delay in making an attempt in any field event will be permitted. The following time limits should not be exceeded: Pole Vault - 2 minutes All other field events - 1 1/2 minutes. 10 Athletes in the Pole Vault must use their own poles. All other athletes must use the equipment, including starting blocks, supplied by the Meet Organizers. 11. Only pin spikes (max. length 7 mm or 9 mm will be allowed on the track and runways. Shoes with another type of spike may lead to disqualification. This includes high jumpers. (max. length 13mm if event is held at a site that does not have artificial surface.) This is very important in order to maintain track and runways throughout the meet. 12. AWARDS a) Winning schools in each of six classifications (NSSAF Championship Banner.) b) 1st place in each event including relays (NSSAF Gold Medallions) c) 2nd & 3rd Place in each event (NSSAF Silver/Bronze Medallions) d) A championship banner will be presented to the overall winner in each division. (1, 2, 3, 4) Please Note: Individual Awards will be presented immediately following the completion of the event. 17. Athletes are requested to stay out of the infield area unless he/she is participating in the field event being conducted. Coaches are to stay outside the fence at all times. Entrance to the infield shall be through the designated gate only. 19. No competitor shall receive assistance during the progress of an event. Coaches may not give advice in the competition area and athletes may not leave the immediate site of the event or engage in dialogue with persons during the event. Failure to comply - First Offense - warning by the referee - Second Offense - disqualification (IAAF Handbook - Rule 144) 20. Syudents must honestly compete in all events in which they are entered. Failure to comply will result in disqualification. 21. Coaches are reminded that uniformas identifying athletes with non-school organizations are prohibited. This includes: Amateur Sport Club Uniforms Canada Games Legion Team Provincial Team Service Club, etc. PLEASE EMPHASIZE YOUR SCHOOL S IDENTITY! 7
