3 ITU WELCOME LETTER Greetings and welcome to the 2018 MS AMLIN World Triathlon Bermuda! It is my enormous pleasure to welcome you all to Bermuda for the second race of this year s ITU World Triathlon Series. This is an especially gratifying moment being the first time that Bermuda has hosted an ITU World Triathlon Series event, and we look forward to a long and successful relationship with this beautiful country. It is fitting that the island that has given birth to one of triathlon s modern greats, Flora Duffy, now takes up the responsibility of hosting a prestigious WTS event; recognition of her back-to-back series wins in 2016 and 2017 that have given the sport such an enormous boost in the region. The World Series race is the focus of the Bermuda Triathlon Festival Weekend, running from Thursday April 26 to Sunday April 29. Novices are welcome to participate alongside seasoned triathletes of all ages, for an occasion that will once again underline the unique accessibility and comradery of triathlon. The world s best triathletes can certainly expect to be challenged here. Following a 1500 m swim in the clear blue Atlantic waters, a challenging bike course tackles hilly terrain that includes a gruelling climb up narrow Corkscrew Hill, before the run follows picturesque Front Street s colourful buildings through the centre of Bermuda s capital, Hamilton. What Flora s achievements have done for the sport here is incredible, and this weekend of activities and racing gives us the perfect opportunity to turn even more young people on to our wonderful sport for the first time. Indeed, Bermuda s team in the Triathlon Mixed Relay at this month s 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast is a direct result of the incredible growth that Bermuda has witnessed over the past few years, and that development can serve as an example to all of our National Federations. This weekend represents an important debut for Bermuda on the WTS calendar and I would like to thank the Bermuda Triathlon Association and the local organisers for putting together this wonderful course. As ever, I wish all the athletes the best of luck and I hope that everybody gets to enjoy the spectacle of WTS racing and triathlon up close. 4 LOC WELCOME LETTER Hey Elites - expect a race like no other. How do you combine the best features of the WTS courses into one? The city center swim from Hamburg, the bike hill from Rio, the run hill from Stockholm, the home hero atmosphere from Leeds... When I first set out to create a new race on the WTS circuit all of those aspects came to mind. What you have in front of you is the result. A swim in Hamilton Harbour right off the Flagpole - the epicenter of Bermudian festivities. A bike up Corkscrew Hill - the sharp biting hill with two quick switchbacks. A run on Front Street - flat and fast - but watch out for Burnaby Street. The heart of activity is the Birdcage right near the Transition and the Finish. A policeman dressed in a British Bobby uniform used to stand inside and direct traffic. You ll come past this intersection 25 times during the race. Once out of the water, twice on every bike lap and four times on the run. Kris Gemmell and the folks at ITU gave me special permission to have this 10 short laps on the bike. This makes for a super condensed inner city course with a very clear focal point for spectators and television. I hope that also creates a fun atmosphere with a motivated crowd to cheer you on! 7 GENERAL INFORMATION Post Office The nearest post office is Perot Post Office, located at 9 Queen St, Hamilton HM 11, open from 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday. FLATTS VILLAGE The full service General Post Office is at 56 Church Street, Hamilton, opposite the Parliament building and is open from 8am - 5pm Monday to Friday. Telephone: Bank - change Bermuda has its own currency which is on par with the US dollar and all Bermuda stores and services accept US cash. For banking services, HSBC Harbourview Centre is conveniently located at 37 Front Street, Hamilton, in the centre of the event venue with 24-hour access to ATMs that dispense local currency and US cash. Personal service staff are available from 9 am 4.30 pm Monday to Friday. YOU MAY NEVER MAKE IT BACK HOME THE SAME. Restaurants There are numerous restaurants in Hamilton serving local cuisine. Ask for Fish Chowder or Bermuda s famous Fish Sandwich, or seek healthy options at most places. An overview of restaurants and nightlife can be found here. Other Facilities Bermuda is a British Dependent Territory yet operates largely on a US system. We accept US currency and our electrical power supply is 110V, the same as in the US. 10 VENUE INFORMATION Elite Athletes Lounge/Athlete Recovery Area The athletes lounge is located in the Pier 6 building on Front Street - at the corner of Parliament Street and Front Street. The Recovery Area is just behind the Finish Line. For familiarizations, please register with the technical officials at the recovery tent prior to embarking on the bike and/or swim familiarizations. Bike Mechanic Service Our Bike Partner Winners Edge will offer comprehensive Bike Mechanic Support from April 26-April 28. A bike mechanic will be present at the Elite Athlete Lounge during opening hours on competition day and during bike course familiarization. If you need help outside these hours please contact the LOC office. Toilets and changing facilities are available at both locations. Sealed bottles of water and fruit will also be provided at both locations. Elite Bike Service - Hours Thursday: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Race Briefing The Race Briefing for Elite Athletes and Coaches will take place in the Hamilton Princess Hotel on Thursday April 26, at 6pm (1800). New this year Athletes entering the briefing hall after the briefing has started and athletes not attending the briefing but informed the Technical Delegate about their absence will receive a delayed start, which delay will be according to the time penalty applicable for the specific distance - 15 seconds. Friday: Friday: Saturday: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm 9:45 am - 10:45 am for familiarization (located at athlete recovery next to finish line) 12:10 pm - 12:55 pm, and during the race at both wheel stations 3:10 pm - 3:55 pm, and during the race at both wheel stations Doping Control Doping Control will be performed according to WADA/ITU and Bermuda Anti-Doping regulations. The post race doping controls will take place in HSBC Building, Harbourview Centre, 37 Front St. Medical Services First Aid and Emergency Medical Services will be available to anyone requiring medical assistance at the venue on April 28, before and/or during competition hours. St John s Ambulance (SJA) will provide 3 ambulances, plus one large mobile clinic vehicle. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) will arrange for breakfast daily in the Princess Victoria room for all Elite Athletes who booked their stay through TRIA0418 and who are staying at the Hamilton Princess Hotel. Cell phone Contact Tina Rowse: Tina is based in the LOC office during Thursday and Friday before the event. Accreditation LOC will provide all Athletes with an official accreditation card according to the ITU Event Operational and Technical Requirements. Coaches and medical officials will receive a wristband from the ITU immediately following their respective briefing. All coaches and medical staff must register through the ITU online registration system to be eligible for an accreditation card. Accreditation cards will be handed out after the briefing and registration on April 26, 2018 at the Hamilton Princess Hotel. If Athletes and Coaches would like to use the swimming pool at the National Stadium earlier on this day, please ask for your accreditation card at the official accreditation desk in the LOC office. Only accredited people will be allowed to access certain venue areas. Accreditation cards provide access to specific areas of the competition venue and Field of Play. All accredited persons are requested to carry their accreditation cards with them at all times and to show them upon request. 14 PRE-COMPETITION Training The BDA National Stadium will offer perfect opportunities for your training. The stadium is 15 minutes away from the main venue by bike. (address: #65 Roberts Avenue, Devonshire DV01, Bermuda). In order to enter the swimming pool at the National Stadium athletes and coaches should carry and show their accreditation cards. The roads are narrow and open to traffic so please use caution. Corkscrew Hill is not open to training at any time prior to the race, due to one way traffic; the race course goes against the traffic. 17 PRE-COMPETITION COURSE FAMILIARIZATION Swim You will be able to swim the course during swim familiarization in Hamilton harbour on Friday, April 27th from 10:30 11:30 am. The location is on Front Street, next to Car Park #1 (see map below). Please check into Athletes Recovery area to register with the Technical Officials prior to entering the water. During the swim course familiarization there will be lifeguards and medical services available. Changing tents are provided. You are swimming at your own risk. Love your life. We do. 21 COMPETITION INFORMATION Competition Rules The MS Amlin World Triathlon Bermuda 2018 will follow the latest published Competition Rules of the International Triathlon Union. Preliminary Information about the FOP The Field of Play is in Hamilton, Front Street located at the Car Park #1. Weather Conditions The weather conditions in April can become very hot during the event so stay hydrated before competing. April is one of the best months to visit Bermuda if you want to enjoy all the beautiful sunshine without high humidity, large crowds or risk of severe storms. Humidity is usually between 60 % and 85 %. Air temperature will vary between 17C overnight low to approximately by day 22 C. The ocean temperature averages 68F or 20 C during April with water visibility excellent, up to 200 feet (approx 55 meters). 22 COMPETITION INFORMATION Protest & Appeals Standard procedures will be followed according to the ITU Competition Rules. Medal Ceremony The medal ceremony takes place next to the finish chute after the last finisher of each race. Required athletes will be escorted by staff to where they need to be for the ceremonies.
