1 CHAPTER 15 CLASS B TRACK AND FIELD HISTORY STATE TRACK AND FIELD MEETS The University Athletic Association at the University Of North Dakota (UND) sponsored the first Interscholastic Track and Field meet in That meet was held at Athletic Park which was not on UND grounds. It was a temporary dirt track only wide enough for 4 runners and was marked off each spring ( ) in the baseball park near the Great Northern roundhouse in Grand Forks. From the meet was held on a 1/5 mile track (University Athletic Field) which was west of the university buildings. In 1911 a new quarter-mile cinder track was laid at UND near the Memorial Stadium site, east of the campus buildings, bordering Columbia Avenue, near the present-day Hyslop Sports Center. This cinder track was used until Memorial Stadium was built in the fall of Grand Forks students and businessmen raised funds to build University of North Dakota's Memorial Stadium in It had a permanent track with bleachers for fans. The university continued their sponsorship of the state track meet until In 1938 the North Dakota High School League started co-sponsoring the state track and field meets with the University Athletic Association and alternated state track meets between Grand Fork's Memorial Stadium and Bismarck's Hughes Field, which was built in the fall of The North Dakota High School League assumed sole sponsorship of the state track meet and moved it to Valley City High School's Hanna Field in Girls track started in 1966 and separated into Class A and B in State A and B track meets have been held jointly and separately at college tracks in Minot's Herb Parker Stadium, Wahpeton's Frank Vortin Field, Dickinson's Whitney Stadium, Grand Fork's Memorial Stadium and Bismarck's Community Bowl (completed in 1997).(See the complete record of state track meet locations at the end.) Track teams in the eastern side of North Dakota dominated those early state meets. As track gained statewide attention, other track teams from throughout the state took up the sport. Bismarck won the state track meet in 1929 and broke the string of dominance of the eastern North Dakota teams. Starting in 1939, as the larger schools continued to dominate early track and field events, smaller schools applied pressure to create a separate division. Finally, in 1950, the North Dakota High School League placed large schools boys track teams in Class A and small schools in Class B-C divisions. In 1964, Class B-C changed to Class B. CHANGES IN TRACKS SURFACES At the turn of the 20th century, tracks were dirt track. In 1911, however, track ovals were covered with coal cinders for the first time. Cinders were easy to come by because nearly every home, business and college burned coal during the winter months. Cinders also could be packed to create a hard surface. Track lanes were laid down with limestone. Starting spots had to be measured for the running events. When athletes fell on the track, cinders could cause serious injuries. In Bismarck, Hughes Field always had a cinder track from the day it was built until the late 1960's. Valley City State College's Lokken Field had the first all-surface (synthetic) track in the state. Bismarck's Hughes field was covered with rubberized asphalt called Reslite in Over the years, synthetic tracks surfaces have been added at college facilities. Recently the new Bismarck's Community Bowl installed a synthetic track in The synthetic surface allows greater stability and usage in case of wet weather and allows track meets to continue despite weather conditions. QUALIFING FOR THE STATE TRACK MEET Athletes can qualify for the state track meet by meeting pre-established minimum times and distances established by the North Dakota High School Activities Association at sanctioned track meets throughout the season since Athletes can also qualify for the state track meet by taking first or second place at eight regional track meets. Athletes can compete in four events at the state track meet. MEASURING WIND SPEEDS The North Dakota High School Activities Association has the necessary equipment to determine wind speeds. Only track records established at the state meet qualify as official state records because wind speeds over 6 miles per hour are not allowed into the record books. 1
2 STOP WATCHES AND ELECTRONIC TIMING AND MEASURING EQUIPMENT Early track meets had people stand at the finish line with stop watches. Each person was assigned to pick a certain place winner. In the state track meet, two persons would time the place winners. The North Dakota High School Athletic Association started using electronic timing equipment (Accu-Track) in Electronic measuring equipment for measuring discus and javelin throwing events were used for the first time in SCORING TEAM POINTS Points were awarded for places won in the state track meet.or example, early in 20th century, only the top four places won points - five for 1st, three for 2nd, two for 3rd, and one for 4th. In 1958, the top five winners won points. The scoring changed - five for 1 st, four for 2 nd, three for 3 rd, two for 4 th, and one for 5 th. It was possible for an exceptional athlete to win four events at the state premier track meet and win the meet. The state track meets awarded points for the top six placers starting in 1978 with 6 points given for first and all the other places given the corresponding points for 2 nd through 6 th. Then, it was possible to have one or two athletes to take several high places and win the state track meet for their town. Starting in 1994, ten points are award for 1st, eight for 2 nd, six for 3 rd, five for 4 th, four for 5 th, three for 6 th, two for 7 th, and one for 8 th. It's more difficult now for one or two athletes to dominate a state track meet and the final results. AWARDS Ribbons, medals, or plaques have been handed out over time to various track and field winners at individual track meets and at the state track meet. Some athletes have a large collection of awards because of their track and field accomplishments. CONVERSION FROM YARDS TO METERS High schools track records converted from yards to meters in GIRLS TRACK PLACED IN SEPERATE DIVISIONS Girls track started for all schools in 1966, splitting into Class A and B divisions in CURRENT WEIGHTS AND SAFETY REQUIREMENT 1. Boys shot put weights 12 pounds; discus weighs 1.6 kilograms; javelin weights 800 grams. 2. Girls shot put weights 8.13 pounds; discus weights 1 kilogram, javelin weights 600 grams. 3. Helmets are required equipment in the pole vault. BOYS TRACK EVENTS NO LONGER HELD AT STATE TRACK MEETS pound hammer throw: yard dash: yard dash: 4.
