WELCOME Dear Athlete, We are looking forward to welcoming you to the 27 th edition of our iconic Race IRONMAN Lanzarote, the oldest IRONMAN race in Europe. We are thrilled to welcome more than 1800 athletes from over 50 Nations who will take part in this fantastic Race. A few changes and improvements have been implemented in this year s magic and scenic bike course. The main reason for these changes is the roads closure to traffic. It is very hard to close the roads for a 180k route on a small island like Lanzarote, with four big tourist areas, all needing access to the airport and to the Island s attractions. This year s improvement to the roads, guarantees the athletes more safety, which is our primary focus and gives all participants a better experience, keeping the concept of a 1 loop course. The bike course will still pass through emblematic points like El Golfo, La Geria, Mirador del Rio, and Puerto del Carmen. We are glad to inform you that this year s course won t pass through Nazaret. Please read the latest information and make sure you have taken all the necessary steps to ensure a smooth arrival on Lanzarote. We wish you all a safe and memorable race! 33 6. MEDIC AND EMERGENCY Interview with Javier Arroyo, medical director for all Club La Santa sports events. Javier Arroyo. Javier has more than 20 years experience in critical care and emergency medicine, and ten IRONMAN editions. The most difficult task has been following on from Antonio Zoido as medical director for all Club La Santa sports events. What is the role of the Lanzarote IRONMAN medical team and what are the most common health problems? Anything can happen during an endurance event. We assist with any health problems our triathletes might suffer before the start, and we only finish when we are no longer needed. During the swim, there are always a few cases of hypothermia. Slower, older and smaller swimmers are particularly exposed to excessive heat loss. In severe cases, active re-warming methods are often necessary. We supply the heat that the triathlete s body is unable to produce. But nobody gets cold during the bike course Absolutely Crashes are the biggest problem during the bike course. We also deal with muscular or digestive problems, abrasions and sunburn, similar to the issues that arise during the run course. Some of our triathletes have chronic health problems of their own, such as diabetes or even heart arrhythmias. For your own safety, you should report any relevant chronic health problems and regular medication taken. How could we avoid or prevent these problems before they occur? Whilst we don t have a magic wand to prevent all of the issues, we have some basic rules. As Kenneth Gasque says in several different languages-, there is one basic rule: no accidents. The second rule is no accidents. I shouldn t need to tell you the third basic rule No accidents? You got it! Ironman is a celebration of sport, the day when we witness the result of years of training and sacrifice. It is a competition, but safety is always our priority. Our low accident rate is partly due to the quality of our organization, but the key factor is the outstanding behaviour of our triathletes. After every edition, accidents and medical assistance are reviewed to guarantee the safety of our athletes.

You say that you review medical assistance We always do! Most of our staff work in emergency or critical care medicine every day, and their work is constantly evaluated. We also do that as an organisation. We have 27 years experience and know that this is the only way to learn and improve. A lot of things will have changed since 1992 Just have a look at the pictures from those years: everything was different. Most finishers received intravenous fluids. We now know that very few athletes need it. Oral hydration is enough, except for those who experience intense vomiting. Race day is not for experiments. Do not use new shoes, clothes, fluids or gels. Always remember to apply sufficient sunscreen! Tell us how you organize each job. We have a huge surveillance, rescue and evacuation presence in the water kayaks, divers, jet skis, helicopters-. We have a small hospital on the beach. We then follow the cyclists in fast intervening vehicles (FIV). They look like ambulances and have at least one doctor and one nurse on board with the supplies needed to assist all kind of emergencies. Our team uses bikes on the run and we have a small hospital at the finish line to deal with any potential problems such as vomiting, fainting, blisters and the most severe - low blood sodium. IN addition, we have ambulances all over the race course. So, low blood sodium issues are the most severe problems? Yes. Everybody talks a lot about hydration, but some triathletes drink too much fluid what kind they drink makes no difference. That s why it is so critically important for our triathletes to measure their weight at registration, and write it down. We have detected up to 8 kg weight gain in finishers. Yes, an intake of more than 8 litres during the IRONMAN. We offer a blood analysis service for those at risk At the finish line? We have had a small laboratory at the finish line for the last 10 years. Last year we incorporated ultrasound imaging. Don t let our machines impress you though, the most important aspect is our staff.

The Team Javier Arroyo Over 20 years experience in critical care and emergency medicine and ten IRONMAN editions. The most difficult task has been following on from Antonio Zoido as medical director for all Club La Santa sport events. Verónica Sansano Emergency doctor since she finished her training in family medicine. She has been unstoppable since she got a taste for IRONMAN in Fluent in English and German. Sandra Rodríguez. The veteran. She is a family physician and first participated in IRONMAN 1997 whilst working in accident and emergency. Currently based in France, Sandra never misses an IRONMAN Lanzarote. Samuel Naranjo Our latest signing. He is very passionate about emergency medicine, and he ll undoubtedly get hooked on the adrenaline of race day. Guillermo Rizo In charge of our laboratory since 2007, he is a pharmacist specializing in clinical analysis. Thanks to him, we can measure your sodium levels to hospital standards. A double IRONMAN finisher. José Lluch Captain Lluch is an acute medicine specialist in emergency situations. He has been unable to tear himself away since being an IronDoc in Néstor Alemán Nestor is a gastroenterologist, IRONMAN Lanzarote Finisher and an enthusiastic IronDoc. Luis Renovales Besides being a family physician working in A&E, Luis used to be a Marine that s not a joke! He is always ready to tackle any emergency medical problems as and when they occur. Berta Román A pulmonary medicine doctor who has been with us since Nobody understands better than her what really happens to your lungs during and after such a demanding event. Houssein Bouchotrouch He is a star, an all-round nurse. Capable of assisting a severe trauma patient in the emergency

department and help in theatre with a caesarean five minutes later. Always in good spirits, he has been with our team since Raúl Vilariño. He is responsible for over25 experienced emergency nurses that form the foundations of our team year after year. Besides being a great nurse, he is an institution in himself: This will be his 26thIRONMAN. In 1992, our great friend and doctor Antonio Zoido organised IRONMAN Lanzarote s medical assistance. Everything was different back then from bikes to nutrition- and triathlon was largely unknown. Antonio was the pioneer who made us feel safe: if anything were to happen, he would be there with his excellent team. When he left us forever in October 2015, his legacy of a real master in medicine, sport and life adventure lived on. We follow in his footsteps, re-evaluating our methods and trying to improve with every event. Remember, if anything happens, the best team will be there to help you. We dedicate this to you, Antonio!

7. ENVIRONMENT Lanzarote has been declared a World Biosphere site by UNESCO since We therefore ask all athletes, family members/ relatives to respect the island of Lanzarote in any way possible: Refrain from painting (Graffiti, paint, crayon, chalk) the roads along the course.
