3 Welcome to the 2018 Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia- Pacific Championships Cairns - Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, the eighth edition of this exciting event. Justifiably during its evolution the event has become known as the IRONMAN in Paradise, boasting an experience that extends well before and past the race day excitement. Hosted in Tropical North Queensland athletes and their support crew have easy access to the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, tablelands and the tropical island surrounds. The Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns is the feature event on the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival schedule which will take place from 6 11 June. Included in the program is the IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns, Quicksilver Reef Swim Green Island, The Cairns Post Bright Night Run and the McDonalds IRONKIDS Cairns. We wish all participants the best of luck and hope that you can enjoy your time in Tropical North Queensland. See you at the Finish line. Hollie Ellis Race Director Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns offers a course that is arguably the most spectacular on the Oceania event calendar. In fact, the Cairns to Port Douglas bike course was voted as one of the best bike courses globally in From reef to World Heritage listed rainforest, and a finish line in the heart of the CBD the race has become a must-do on the IRONMAN calendar, and there is every reason to believe the hype. As we continue to evolve the event with the objective of enhancing your overall race experience we are excited to bring back an old school style Pasta Party to welcome you to Cairns and the race festivities. You will receive a personal invitation to the function where we will be keeping the formalities to a minimum and complimented with live music, highlight videos and a whole lot of pasta. Additional the event schedule will include a showing of the 40 YEARS OF DREAMS - SHOWCASING KONA 2017: 2017 IRONMAN World Championship TV Show where you can watch this on the big screen at the Finish Line. Please ensure that you read this Athlete Guide thoroughly as there is not a formal athlete video briefing. If you have any questions we will be having a Race Director Q & A on Saturday, check the Event Schedule for details. Finally, the Cairns community and volunteers are ready and waiting to support you during your IRONMAN journey. The town and regions surrounding Cairns and Port Douglas are amongst the most welcoming areas in Tropical North Queensland and I encourage you to take the time to explore what it has to offer. 2

4 MESSAGE FROM RACE REFEREE We are using the Triathlon Australia (TA) Race Competition Rules, and this is a NON Drafting Event. These locations are as follows: Swim Start Swim Exit Transition Roaming Bike & Run Course Finish & Recovery Basic first aid support can also be obtained at the Bike and Run Aid Stations. It is strongly advised that you have adequate personal insurance regardless of whether you are an Australian resident or from overseas. We highly recommend that Australian residents hold valid private health insurance and that international athletes check with their travel insurance or personal insurance provider to confirm what they are covered for. Under Australian legislation, all non-australian residents are not covered for medical costs or ambulance transport costs. If you have an accident you must pay for your own medical expenses and transport. Hence it is recommended you obtain adequate personal medical insurance or travel insurance with the relevant coverage. SAG Wagon The SAG Wagon will collect athletes who are unable to complete the event, or are unable to finish within the course cut-off time. Collected athletes will be transported to the closest Aid Station or back to Transition/Finish Line. Should you require a Sag Wagon at any time, please wave down a motorbike official and they will contact IRONMAN for Sag Wagon deployment. Alternatively advise volunteers at the nearest Aid Station. Please note: Delays in SAG Wagon transport are to be expected. To assist with a prompt response, please do not move from your reported location once a Sag Wagon has been requested as this could affect their ability to locate and transport you. You will collect your Timing Chip and confirm your identity with the timing personnel at the exit of the athlete Check- In process. At this stage you will re-confirm your information and ensure that your race number matches your timing chip. Please ensure you put your chip in a safe place and remember to bring it with you on race morning. Timing Chips must be worn on your left ankle. On race morning, your timing chip must be on to enter transition. Officials will be checking this. If you do not start the race or need to pull out of the race at any point on the course for any reason you must return your Timing Chip to one of the Drop out clerks located at an Information Booth, if you are unable to reach this location return to an Event Personnel Official. If your Timing Chip is not returned or is lost you will be charged $150 for a replacement. Timing results will include swim split, bike split, run split and finish time overall and category results. If Timing Chips are not worn throughout the duration of the race, race results will not be available to that athlete. If a Timing Chip is lost during the race, you will need to inform the Event Personnel in transition, timing providers can do their best to replace that chip in order to record splits for the rest of the race. It is recommended you wear the strap supplied with the Timing Chip, using an alternative puts you at risk of losing the chip during the race. Lack of timing data may affect validity of category results & World Championship qualifications. Bike pump drop off will be available at the exit of Transition 1, Palm Cove on race morning and can be collected post event during Bike and Bag Check-Out in Recovery. Ensure your bike pump has been correctly labelled with your athlete number. 10

23 ROKA SWIM COURSE 3.8KM CUT OFF TIME 2 Hours 20 Minutes from Individuals start time. COURSE SUMMARY Athletes will be required to complete the 1 lap course starting at Williams Esplanade, Palm Cove. The 3.8km course travels in an anti-clockwise direction and offers a stunning tropical and balmy swim. PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES BEACH START VIA WAVE STARTS Professional Athletes will be set off in separate male and female wave starts from the beach. Professional Males will start at 7.35am, Professional Females will start at 7.36am. The start is located in front of the Age Group Start Zones. AGE GROUPERS BEACH START VIA ROLLING START This year s event will incorporate a Rolling Swim Start allowing age group athletes to self-seed themselves into Start Zones prior to the race start. Each Start Zone will align to a different expected swim time with all Start Zones located on the beach. There will be four different Start Zones to choose from depending on an athlete s expected swim time. These zones include: Zone 1. Under 1 hour (60 minutes) Zone 2. 1 hour < 1 hour 7 minutes Zone 3. 1 hour 8 minutes < 1 hour 20 minutes Zone 4. 1 hour 21 minutes < 2 hours 20 minutes To access the Start Zones, athletes will need to follow the directional signage and instructions of event staff. At 7:45am the Age Group Rolling Start will begin. This will involve athletes being released in groups of approximately half a dozen at a time at intervals over the start line and timing mat. As an individual crosses the start line and timing mat, their individual time will start. The Rolling Start will continue from Zone 1 to Zone 4 until all athletes have crossed the timing mat and begun the race. require. They will be resourced with an array of Rescue Boards, Surf Ski s, Jet Skis and IRB s. At any time should you require the assistance of water safety please raise one arm into the air and the team will come to your aid. Water Safety will be wearing the traditional yellow and red surf lifesaving uniforms for easy identification. Should at any point an athlete decide to abandon the swim, they will be taken to one of the swim extraction points. From here they will be required to confirm their athlete number and be checked over by medical. It is then the athlete s responsibility to walk back to Transition and hand in their timing chip to the Drop out Clerk located at the Information Booth. WETSUITS This event is being held near the end of what is known as the stinger season and it is strongly recommended by local experts that full body coverage during the swim is worn and this may be a full wetsuit or a full trisuit. Due to the expected water temperature and the current Triathlon Australia temperature cut-off for the use of wetsuits approval has been granted by Triathlon Australia to increase the temperature cut-off for athlete safety. The water temperature will be taken 24-hours before race start and the reading plus the interim ruling on wetsuit use will be announced and posted at Saturday s Bike and Gear Bag Check-In. The water temperature will again be taken on race morning and the final ruling on wetsuit use will be continuously announced up to the time Transition 1 closes. If the water temperature is not greater than 26.0oC/78.8oF wetsuits are optional. If the water temperature is greater than 26.0oC/78.8oF the use of wetsuits will most likely be banned but this will confirmed by the Medical Director. From the second turnaround point in Port Douglas, cyclists will follow the Captain Cook Highway south detouring through Smithfield down Sidlaw, Dunne and McGregor Roads before turning back via Yorkeys Knob Road onto Captain Cook highway and down into Cairns CBD and into Transition 2 (Fogarty Park, Cairns). Runners then proceed back past the finish line venue and Esplanade Lagoon and continue north through the parklands adjacent to Cairns Esplanade as far as Airport Avenue. Athletes then complete the first lap returning through the parklands to the Esplanade Lagoon. Unfortunately for athletes, you will have to settle for one of the aid stations around the Esplanade, rather than stopping to enjoy a cold one as you finish up the last two laps of the race, but the energy and support of all the spectators in the area should help to carry you through to the finish line.
