Laker Ladies Your President with a girl - none other than Chrissy Wellington, World and Australian Ironman Champion, from Britain. The photo was taken at the 2008 Ironman Australia finishing line. Chrissy is great ambassador for Triathlon with a sparkling personality and a great sense of humour. This is your Club Captain endeavouring to out do your President by coercing Chrissy to wear the Laker hat in Hawaii. 11 2008 AWARDS 1. Junior Female & Male champions. Best performed junior athlete under 19 in the club a) Female Alexandra Slaven - Racing in the Under 16 age group Alexandra improved her performances yet again this year racing in 4 events and recording 3 race wins. Also represented S.A. in the schoolgirls creditably in the Australian titles in April. Another with a big future in the sport. b) Male Tom Gilligan outstanding performance from a new star on the horizon racing in the strong Junior Elite competition recording 3 race victories in 10 starts for the year. Certainly a huge potential in the sport 2. Most Improved athletes of the year a) Female Rita Bennink Taking up the sport so she could get to see Frank a little more she has steadily improved and this year gone to the next level of performance. A keen competitor Rita raced in 7 events recording a victory and never finishing lower than 2 nd. Also was selected to represent Australia in Germany in the Olympic Distance event b) Male James Duffy Another newer athlete to the horizon. No doubt got sick of watching Dad and sister perform so thought he would get serious over the last year or 2. This year raced 9 times for 6 wins and never lower than 2 nd. A continued improved training efforts will see him dominate age group racing in the years to come. Captured the State Sprint Title at Coomeellla in December 3. Club Age Group Champions FEMALE MALE James Mullins Under 16 Alexandra Slaven Rees Cooper-Jones Natasha Williams Ethan Lyons Jane Rothe James Duffy Annette Eastwood Ben Noll Samantha Sturm Stephen Barter Evarne Rees Nathan Warburton Angela Potter Kent Dredge Jo Link Lawrence Perressin Rita Bennink Ian Berry Jan Daley Chris Carter Rick Daley John Baines 4. Coaches Award Awarded by the club coaches to the athlete they believe within the club who has put in the greatest effort on the training track - Scott Corey

12 5. Most Outstanding Female & Male Age Group competitor a) Female Our Women s ranks have blossomed over the past 3 to 4 years and now this award is always very hotly contested, we really do have some outstanding athletes that competed for this award. Closely in contention were Joanne Link a strong competitor over all distances, Angela Potter in her 1 st full season, Jan Daley who continues to improve and Rita Bennink who has already been rewarded for her outstanding efforts. However in an outstanding season that saw her victorious in 8 races out of 10 and never lower than 2 nd, her exceptional training focus has seen her develop rapidly and no doubt a full season of racing Elite is just around the corner. The winner of the State Female Age Grouper of the year - Annette Eastwood b) Male Again very closely contested award in an area where we are undoubtedly the strongest club in the State with numerous athletes having outstanding seasons again in all age groups. Leading contenders included.james Duffy who also has been rewarded for his outstanding efforts, Rick Daly again who dominated his age group with another unbeaten season, Ian Berry who focused on the local season and his efforts were justly rewarded, Chris Carter who had a stellar season. But the winner in an outstanding unbeaten season in an exceptionally hotly contested age group containing many outstanding athletes, racing 11 times for 9 race wins and another who could continue to dominate at age group level for many years Stephen Barter 6. Senior Male & Female Club Champion Awarded to the best performed athlete within the Club racing at the 0pen (elite level) a) Female Not available as there was not a qualifier this season. b) Male Great to see so many Lakers racing Elite with this year 6 Lakers performing superbly in Matt White, Matt Stephens, Darren Morriss, Daniel Lock, Danny Salter and Derek Ozga. c) Now the winner - Well what more can we say about this athlete except what an amazing season. 10 starts for 11 wins in the fiercely competitive Elite category is a fabulous performance. Swept all major races over all distances in S.A. On a National basis 2 nd place at Victorian State 70.3 Championships, with probably the major highlight being his 7 th place at the Australian Ironman and for that effort becoming the first South Australian that will race the Hawaii Ironman as a Professional athlete He has been rewarded for countless hours of training that he has and will continue to do in the lead-up to the event and I am sure we will all eagerly be watching him and the other Laker athletes at Hawaii. Superb describes the performances of the winner MATT WHITE 7. Outstanding National or International performance for female or male athlete within the Club In February Mick Tagell s 2 nd place in the Australian 70.3 championships, Mary Mitchell s 3 rd place in Geelong and Andrena Moore winning her age group in the same event

13 In the past 12 months an amazing 41 Lakers have completed Ironman events here and around the world with the standout performances being Kevin Fergusson s 2 nd age group place in New Zealand and Hawaii qualifying spots for Nancy Cullen, Andrena Moore and Richard Pryor. Special mention to Mary Mitchell for her winning a lottery spot to Hawaii And in August last year in Hamburg the World Olympic Distance with 8 reps in: Rita & Frank Bennink, Jan & Rick Daley, Andrena & Trevor Moore & Sarah Martin & Lawrence Perressin with the highlight being Andrena Moore s 3 rd placing With so many outstanding performances it was difficult to select a winner but racing Elite is as hard as it gets and in a hot field as it was at Port Macquarie and on a tough day the sub 9 hr performance, 7 th place overall and getting that Pro Hawaii spot makes for a very deserving winner in Matt White 8. Award for the club Most Outstanding Ironman Performance Male or Female This year 41 Lakers athletes represented the Club nationally and Internationally so there was 41 qualifiers for this award The award is given annually to the athlete who it is considered by the selection committee who had the best performance..does not have to be the fastest or an age group winner but the athlete who has performed to the maximum of their ability There were many outstanding efforts this year, with some of the most notable being, the age group victory by Andrena Moore at Port Macquarie and Kevin Fergusson s 2 nd place at New Zealand Ironman. However this year there were 2 outstanding efforts we couldn t separate. Having her 2 nd Ironman start she absolutely blitzed the field in her age group at Port Macquarie to record a race victory by nearly an hour in a time most men would be delighted to record. Gaining that much chased Hawaii spot was her goal and we wish her well in that and am confident that all being well she will be right up there at the end of the event. - Nancy Cullen. Doubt if there will be a more popular winner of an award tonight than this man. Courage is his middle name. His aim was to get a Hawaii spot at Port Macquarie after just missing out in his age group last year with a 9:57 performance. He trained long and hard over the summer smashed that time down to 9:33 finishing 38 th overall and 7 th in his age group but with only 6 spots and for the first time ever no roll-downs he again missed out. Truly deserving of a spot but with a full health recovery after China we all hope he can eventually gain his spot he wants. Darren Morriss

14 9. The Most Outstanding Olympic Distance Athlete - Male & Female You have heard her name mentioned many times before tonight as it normally is at these nights because she is just such an outstanding athlete and has been for many years. Again this year she has had a stellar season and perhaps not dominated the trophies as much tonight as she had her focus on long training hours leading up to Ironman. However when she did race she still dominated. Back to August of last year she raced the World Championships in Germany and place an excellent 3 rd in her age group over the Olympic distance - Andrena Moore The other recipient of this award has continued to improve over the past couple of years and again this year performed exceptionally well with his focus this year on the Australian Olympic Distance Titles at Mooloolabah in Queensland. After finishing a creditable 5 th last year he set himself to improve this year and that he did by taking out the Australian Title in his age group - Daniel Lock 10. Fergusson Award (Special recognition Award for 110% effort) naturally named after the Fergusson s who arguably have given more of their time and effort to this club than any other parties Rick Daley 11. Lakers Club Member of the Year - Rick Daley 12. Yets v Vets An annual trophy established primarily due to the large number of Lakers participating in Ironman and to create a bit of friendly rivalry between the Under 40 s (Yets) and Over 40 s (Vets) at the Australian Ironman Championships in Port Maquarie. This year 27 raced at Port Mac 12 Yets and 15 Vets The Yets won
