4 HEAD COACH ALONZO WEBB Alonzo Webb Head Coach Track & Field P ittsburgh native Alonzo Webb is entering his fourth season with the Panthers. In three seasons under Webb s leadership, the women s team brought home seven consecutive Championships titles, the 2003, 2004 and 2005 ECAC Outdoor Championships and the 2004 and 2005 Indoor titles. In the Big East Conference his Women s team climbed from eighth place in 2001 to winning the Indoor and Outdoor Big East Championships in The Women s team also finished the year ranked third in the nation in the Indoor Dual Meet Power Rankings conducted by the United States Track Coaches Association for NCAA Division I schools. In addition, Coach Webb earned three consecutive NCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year and the 2005 Indoor and Outdoor Big East Coaching Staff of the Year awards. Furthermore, Coach Webb s athletes have swept the Big East Most Outstanding Field Performer Awards both Indoor and Outdoor, along with the Most Outstanding Track Performer Awards Indoor and Outdoor. With Webb at the helm, the men s team managed to rise from the basement of the Big East Conference where they were 13 th out of 14 teams in 2001 to a third place finish Indoor and Outdoor in Moreover, at the NCAA East Regional Championships the men s team placed eighth out of 112 schools in Over the past three seasons Webb has produced an outstanding six NCAA All-American honors, 25 NCAA qualifying performances, 21 ECAC/IC4A champions, 117 All-ECAC/IC4A, 29 Big East Champions and 48 All-Big East Awardees. Elizabeth Bayne, an NCAA qualifier in the 400 meter hurdles, was also selected as the NCAA Mondo Mid-Atlantic District Female Athlete of the Year. In the 2004 cross country season Maureen McCandless won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Cross Country Title, finished third at the Big East Championships and was named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic District Most Valuable Cross Country Athlete of the Year and became the first female cross country All-American in school history with her fifth place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She followed that up by running the 5000m indoors in a world class 15:48.10 which at the time was the fastest time in the country and the fourth fastest in the world. Academically, Webb s athletes excel just as well in the classroom illustrating the true meaning of student-athlete, garnering 69 Big East Academic All-Star Awards requiring a GPA of 3.0 and above. Prior to becoming head coach for the Panthers, Alonzo Webb helped direct Kent State University to two Mid-American Conference track and field championships in three years as the program s associate head coach and was named head men s and women s track and field and cross country coach at the University of Pittsburgh in Webb, a USATF Level II Certified Coach and 1972 graduate of Peabody High School, boasts over 30 years of track and field coaching experience on the collegiate, club, high school and junior high levels. He was also a standout performer himself, competing in the jumps and decathlon at Western Michigan, where he helped the Broncos to the 1976 MAC championship. This has been a tremendous opportunity for me, Webb said. The chance to come back to my hometown and head a track and field and cross country team at a major university like Pittsburgh is very exciting. The University of Pittsburgh has shown a commitment to excellence throughout the athletic department, and I am happy to be a part of that. I enjoy the challenge of taking this program to a new level, and I hope our student-athletes appreciate the challenge as well. I plan to keep recruiting the state of Pennsylvania hard and bring in Big East quality student-athletes who have the talent and commitment to make an immediate impact in the conference. I also have surrounded myself with a coaching staff that has the same energy, enthusiasm and high expectations that I have. Our focus will be on putting together a complete team. It s never easy taking over a program and changing its direction, but our new attitude has already produced some exciting results. For his accomplishments, Webb was named the United States Track Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic District Coach of the Year in 2003, and repeated that honor in 2004 and 2005 to become one of only two coaches in the country to achieve that distinction, the other being John McDonnell of Arkansas. In a vote by the Big East coaches, Webb was elected to serve as Vice President to the Big East Track and Field Championship and Competition Committee for a term of two years ending in With the Big East being one of the most respected conferences in the country, I feel it s an honor and a privilege to be elected by my peers to serve them in this capacity. Webb joined Kent State in 1999 as an assistant coach and was promoted to associate head coach in He worked with both the men s and women s programs, focusing on the sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi-events. During his Kent State tenure, Webb helped the men s team capture the 2000 outdoor MAC championship, the program s first conference title in 25 years. 38 PITTSBURGH OLYMPIANS/PAST ALUMNI The University of Pittsburgh has a rich and successful track and field history. Its men's and women's teams boast 10 Olympians, the most by any Panther sports program. Pittsburgh's track and field teams have produced a pair of gold medalists John Woodruff, who won the 800 meters at the 1936 Games in Berlin, and Roger Kingdom, who won the 110 meter high hurdles in both the 1984 and 1988 Olympics in Los Angeles and Seoul respectively. Another Pittsburgh product, Herb Douglas, earned a bronze medal in the long jump at the 1948 Games in London. Pittsburgh's Olympians have come from near and far. Woodruff, who lives in New Jersey, was from nearby Connellsville, Pa. Kingdom came to Pittsburgh as a prized running back football recruit out of Unadilla, Ga. Najuma Fletcher, one of the most decorated athletes in Pittsburgh history and former assistant coach, was one of three representatives of her native Guyana to participate in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. More recently, Ayne Allen represented St. Kitts at the 1996 Atlanta Games. One of Pittsburgh's most familiar Olympians, Arnie Sowell went to high school just blocks from the Cathedral of Learning at Schenley High. Sowell finished fourth in the 800 meters at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. Trecia Kaye-Smith placed fourth in Athens and went on to become the world champion in the triple jump in Pittsburgh's Olympic history goes back to the 1920's. Frank Shea was the Panthers first Olympian, competing in the 440 meters. Panther teammates Vic Pickard and Dan Gwinn competed together in the 1928 Games. Pickard represented Canada as a pole vaulter while Gwinn participated in the hammer throw for the U.S. PITTSBURGH TRACK AND FIELD OLYMPIANS FRANK SHEA UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Meters DAN GWINN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1928 Hammer Throw VIC PICKARD CANADA 1928 Pole Vault HERB DOUGLAS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1948 Long Jump (Bronze Medal) ARNIE SOWELL UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Meters ROGER KINGDOM UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Meter High Hurdles (Gold Medal) Meter High Hurdles (Gold Medal) NAJUMA FLETCHER GUYANA 1992 Heptathlon AYNE ALLEN ST.
