1 UMKC Track and Field Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 This Week In Kangaroo Track and Field Kansas City, Mo. -- The Kangaroos will host the 2009 Summit League Indoor Championships in Sterling, Ill., on Friday, Feb. 27-Saturday, Feb. 28. The meet is being held inside the Westwood Sports Complex and begins with the 60-meter dash (men s heptathalon) at 9:00 a.m. Field events will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the women s long jump and the running events will start at 3:00 p.m. with the women s 60-meter hurdles. Top Performances in the Indoor Season Samuel Sullivan posted a season and career top-time in the men s 60 meters back on Jan. 17 with his 10th place finish at the KSU Invitational. Sullivan clocked in at Keenan Simmons has the top UMKC time in three events this season, the 200, 300 and 400 meters. Simmons finished second at the Wildcat Invitational with a time of in the 200 meters on Jan. 31. He finished the 300 meters at (14th place) in the first meet of the season at the Iowa State Holiday Preview and ran in the 400 meters at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 14. All times are career-bests for Simmons. Alex Lopez leads the Kangaroos in middle distance action with the top times in the 600-yard run and the 800-meter run. Lopez clocked in at 1:15.02 in the 600-yard run at the Mule Relays on Feb. 7 for a sixth place finish. The sophomore had a big meet at the Iowa State Classic when he broke the UMKC school record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.23 (eighth place). Daniel McKenzie owns the top times for the Kangaroo men in the mile and 1,000 meters. The senior, one-of-eight, ran 4:36.15 at the Central Missouri Classic last weekend for an eighth place finish. McKenzie posted a time of 2:43.63 in the 1,000 meters back in Jan. at the Missouri Invitational. Laban Mutai is the top-time holder in the men s 3,000 meters this season. The sophomore recorded a career-best time of 8:57.65 at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 13 for a seventh place finish. Mutai is coming off of a successful cross country season, he finished ninth at The Summit League Cross Country Championships and received Second Team all-league honors. Marcus Lee is the leader in both the long and triple jumps for UMKC. The transfer from Barton County (Kan.) C.C. has proven to be a powerful force not only at UMKC but also in The Summit League. Lee finished with a career-best mark of in the long jump at the Mule Relays (Feb. 7), recording a first-place finish. He truly shined in the triple jump though, when he recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with his jump of , also at the Mule Relays. Lee also broke the UMKC school record in the event, knocking off Deandre Free s mark of 50-05, set back in Headed into The Summit League Indoor Championships, Lee leads the league in the men s triple jump. Brad Chesney owns the top mark in the men s high jump. The true freshman posted his career-best height of this past weekend at the Central Missouri Indoor Classic. Jennifer Dopplick is the lone hurdler for the Kangaroo women this indoor season. Dopplick s top time of the year in the 60-meter hurdles is 10.57, set at the Iowa State Classic back on Feb. 14. She has been the only participant in the women s pentathlon this season for UMKC, scoring 2,243 points. Brianna Marshall is one of the top sprinters for UMKC and holds the fastest time in the women s 60 meters. At the KSU Invitational on Jan. 17, Marshall ran for a fourth place finish, clocking in at Anuola Bailey ran in her first meet last weekend and posted the top season time in the 200-meter dash. Bailey crossed the finish line at and took first in the event at the Central Missouri Indoor Classic. Sakia Taylor holds the season-best times in the 300 and 400 meters. Taylor currently holds the three fastest times on the year in the event. Etagegn O Neill holds the season-best times in the 800 and 1,000-meter runs. O Neill set a new personal record in the 800 on Jan. 31 at the Wildcat Invitational, clocking in at 2:23.19 for a third place finish. Alex Harkins is the other leader in the women s distance, posting top times in the mile and 3,000 meters. Harkins ran the mile in 5:15.38 at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 24, finishing 11th in the event. Her 3,000-meter run time of 10:47.29 was good enough for a third place finish at the Wildcat Invitational on Jan. 31. Katherine Williams has the top marks in the women s long and triple jumps. Williams recorded her top lengths of the year in Feb. and at Central Missouri meets. She placed seventh at the CMSU Indoor Classic with a jump of and took 11th at the Mule Relays at Kathryn Tenkku holds the top season marks in both the high jump and the shot put. In the high jump, Tenkku hit at the KSU Invitational on Jan. 17 for a third place finish. She competed in the shot and posted a season-best mark of the same weekend, taking 12th in the event. Lopez Breaks School Record in Men s 800 Meters At Iowa State Classic The Kangaroos wrapped up competition in the Iowa State Classic on Saturday and had one top-10 finisher, a UMKC school record broken and had 10 personal records. Alex Lopez ran his way to an eighth place finish in the men s 800-meter run, clocking in at 1:54.23 to break the UMKC school record. The record was previously set at 1:54.64 by Brad Epperly in In other men s track and field action, Trevor Nared finished 19th in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:17.41 for a personal record. In women s middle distance action, Etagegn O Neill recorded a personal best time of 5:17.83 (24th) in the women s mile, Lindsey Howard ran a personal best time of 1:34.64 (26th), and Jennifer Dopplick finished 27th in the 600-yard run. Also setting personal bests at the Iowa State Classic were Aubrey Frederking (2:24.33) and Maggie Light (2:28.69) in the women s 800-meter run, and D Arby Parks (2:00.16) and Daniel McKenzie (2:00.28) in the men s 800-meter run. Keenan Simmons finished 32nd in the 400 meters, with a personal record of Lee Records NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark and Breaks Schools Record Transfer jumper Marcus Lee had a record setting day at the Mule Relays on Saturday afternoon. The junior broke the school record in the triple jump and hit a provisional qualifying mark with Lee is the first Kangaroo to post a NCAA qualifying mark this season. Deandre Free was the previous record holder for the men s indoor triple jump. Free recorded a jump of 50-0 in the 2002 season. In his career with the Kangaroos, Free was The Summit League indoor athlete of the year in 2001, was the two-time league indoor champion in the triple jump and a three-time league indoor champion in the long jump. The Summit League Releases Indoor Track and Field Preseason Poll The Summit League released its indoor track and field preseason poll on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The UMKC men s and women s teams were picked to finish seventh in the league. The women received 12 points while the men tallied eight.
