3 2 WOMEN S TRACK COACHING STAFF WOMEN S HEAD COACH JOHN COCHRANE John Cochrane is in his 23rd season as head coach of the women's cross country and track and field teams at Truman. His teams have won five Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association track & field championships and one cross country crown in his career. Last season, Cochrane led Truman to a second-place conference finish in both indoor and outdoor track. Five athletes earned all-america honors in indoor and outdoor track and Truman took home 11 championships at the MIAA indoor and outdoor meets. In the fall, Cochrane s cross country squad finished fourth in the MIAA and fifth in the regional meet. One of the highlights of the young squad was winning the Miner Invitational and Bulldog Leah Zidon winning the individual title at that meet. Over the last four years, his indoor track & field teams have placed in the top two at the MIAA meet. During the same span, his outdoor squads have been in the top three. The squads claimed both the MIAA indoor and outdoor championships. The outdoor title was the team s first since 1983, while the indoor crown was last won by the Bulldogs in When the Bulldogs won the MIAA outdoor track title in 1983, Cochrane was voted MIAA Coach of the Year. In 1999 indoor season, he was named MIAA Coach of the Year and the USTCA Great Lakes Coach of the Year for women s indoor track. In 2000, Cochrane was named the conference s indoor coach of the year and followed up with the outdoor honor later that year. He was also named the conference s cross country coach of the year for Since Cochrane s arrival in 1980 at Truman, the Bulldog track program has produced 23 all-america performers and two national champions. In 1990, the Bulldog track team charted its highest finish at the national indoor and outdoor championship meets, placing eighth and 10th, respectively. In that season, Cochrane led his team to its second consecutive indoor MIAA title. Cochrane is a 1968 graduate of Iowa State University and received a master s degree in physical education from Truman in He has been in the coaching field for 33 years, including an 11-year stint at Williamsburg (Iowa) Community School. While there, Cochrane led his 1978 and 1979 cross-country teams to fifth-place finishes at the Iowa 2-A state meet, and in 1978, his track squad finished fourth in state competition. Prior to coaching at Williamsburg, Cochrane directed all sports at Colo, Iowa, for one year. Cochrane received the Distinguished Service Award from the NCAA Division II cross-country coaches for his contributions to the sport in He was a 1996 recipient of the NCAA Division II Track Coaches Distinguished Service Award. 4 MEN S TRACK COACHING STAFF 3 MEN S HEAD COACH ED SCHNEIDER Ed Schneider has had a long and illustrious association with the Bulldog track program, having first been a student-athlete and then an assistant coach, before taking the reigns as the Truman taskmaster 29 seasons ago. Before coaching, Schneider was an outstanding track and cross-country runner for the Bulldogs, earning all-america honors in both sports and winning the NCAA College Division individual cross country championship in He also holds the record in the mile at Stokes Stadium, with a clocking of 4:11.3. This past fall, his Bulldog cross country team advanced to the NCAA Championships for the third straight year. Truman finished 14th at the national meet after finishing second in the MIAA and third in the region. Last year in track, Schneider coached five athletes to all-america honors and his squads brought home nine individual championships at the conference indoor and outdoor meets. Schneider, the 2001 MIAA Coach of the Year in cross country, also received a special honor at the end of the 2000 cross country season, as he was a charter inductee into the NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He has coached 56 all-america athletes in track & field and cross country combined. He is also a five-time recipient of the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year Award. He has guided the cross country squad to 11 team appearances in the NCAA championships. In , Schneider led the Bulldogs to a second-place finish indoor and third-place performance outdoor at the MIAA meets, and he was voted coach of the year by his conference peers. The year 1983 also marked the Bulldogs first MIAA cross country championship under Schneider s guidance. Truman would win another conference title in cross country in 1992 before the 1994 team also captured the top spot. Schneider was named MIAA Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1983, '92 and '94 before his 2001 honor. In '94, the squad went on to place third at the NCAA Division II meet. The Dogs repeated their third-place national finish in 1995, and produced five all-americas. Once again, in 1998, Schneider was named the MIAA Coach of the Year this time for outdoor track & field as the team finished second in the conference. Before returning to Truman in 1974, Schneider coached at Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis. Two of his track teams and three of his cross country teams placed in the top-10 at state meets for class 4- A schools. In 1986, Schneider was inducted into Truman s Athletics Hall of Fame. Doering is a former three-time all-america cross country runner for the Bulldogs. As a senior, he finished 19th at the NCAA national meet and was the individual champion at the MIAA championship. In 2000, he was the runnerup at the MIAA cross country meet and recorded a 27th place finish at nationals. Doering earned his first all-america award in 1999 after placing 26th at nationals and was all-conference with a sixth-place MIAA finish. As a freshman, he led the team throughout the year and earned all-miaa honors with a sixth-place showing at the conference meet. In track, Doering also had a successful senior season, advancing to the national meet for the first time in the outdoor 10,000 meters, where he finished 12th. He was the MIAA outdoor champion in that event and was second in the 5,000 meters. Doering was also indoor all-conference in the 3,000-meters (3rd) and 5,000-meters (4th). In his first three seasons as a Bulldog, he earned seven all-conference awards in indoor and outdoor distance events. Doering, an accounting major, was named to the MIAA commissioner s honor roll last season and was Truman s nominee in 2001 for the MIAA s Ken B. 5 4 WOMEN S TRACK SEASON PREVIEW The 2003 Truman women s track and field team lost 12 key athletes off of last year s squad but, while that may hurt the depth of this year s team, the Bulldogs still expect many good things out of the upcoming season. Sprints/Hurdles The Bulldogs dominated the sprinting events last year in the conference meet and are expected to be strong again. Senior Jill Lowry is one of the top returning athletes for Truman. Last year, she qualified for both the 100-meter and 200-meter races at the outdoor nationals and won four MIAA titles. At the indoor conference meet, she set the league and school records in the 60-meters with a time of 7.76 and also won the 200-meter race, finishing in At the outdoor meet, she won the 100-meters (12.06) and was a member of the 4x100 relay team (47.79) that finished first. She just missed a fifth title by finishing second in the 200-meters (24.70). Lowry, who holds the school record in the outdoor 200-meters, also won three MIAA outdoor titles in 2001 in the 100-meters, 200- meters and 4x100 relay team and advanced to nationals in the two sprinting events. The Bulldogs other returning sprinter is junior Candi Jones who has won two all-america honors as a member of the 4x400 relay team in 2001 and Last year, she helped the 4x400 relay team finish sixth in the nation after breaking the school record with a 3:44.65 mark. The same 4x400 team won the outdoor MIAA title. Individually, Jones, the school s record holder in the indoor 600-yard, earned all-conference honors by finishing second in the indoor 600-yard (1:26.55), an event she won the year before, and third in the outdoor 400-meters (57.19). In the hurdle events, sophomore Christina Winkler and Sara Jessen, a junior indoors and a sophomore outdoors, will lead the way. Winkler earned two all-america honors last year after finishing fifth at nationals in the 400- meter hurdles (1:00.23) and was a member of the 4x400 relay team. Winkler won two MIAA outdoor titles in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.82) and 4x400 relay (3:50.45) and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.06) and the heptathlon (4,484). In the indoor meet, she finished third in the 600-yard run (1:26.60). Jessen, who redshirted the outdoor season last year, is the returning MIAA champion in the indoor 600-yard run (1:26.55). In her freshman season, she earned all-america honors as a member of that year s 4x400 relay team. Samantha Curry and Lindee Weese look to be the top freshmen in the sprints and hurdles. Meghan Esbenshade and Rachel Williams will also compete in the hurdle events. Mid-Distance A pair of all-conference runners, sophomore Candice Hoskins and senior Emily Komiskey, will anchor the middle distance events for Truman. Hoskins finished third at the indoor conference meet last year in the 800-meter run (2:19.96) while Komiskey was fourth in the MIAA outdoor 800-meter run (2:18.50). Both athletes were also members of the indoor 4x800 relay team that finished second at the MIAA championship (9:36.36) Bridget Luebbering saw limited action last year but just missed earning all-miaa honors in 2001 when she finished eighth in the indoor 800-meters. Sarah Armstrong is the lone freshman at middle distance. She consistently placed among the top five Bulldog runners during the cross country season. Jill Lowry won four MIAA titles last year in the indoor 100- and 200-meters, the outdoor 100-meters and as a member of the outdoor 4x100 relay team. Pam Bird was one of the top freshmen during the 2002 cross country season, including leading the team with an 11thplace finish at the MIAA championship. Distance Truman s distance runners are very young this season but will be led by two upperclassman in Jennifer Tesmer and Leah Zidon. Tesmer earned all-conference recognition last year with a fourthplace finish in the 5,000-meters (18:59.63) and finished seventh in the 3,000-meter race (10:56.14). In the indoor season, she finished 14th in the conference in those two events. Last fall during the cross country season, Tesmer was the No. 2 Bulldog runner, including a 13th-place finish at the MIAA championship. Zidon was the top Bulldog last fall in cross country, including winning the Miner Invitational and placing 12th at the conference meet. The other returning distance runner is sophomore Dani Rawlings. At the MIAA indoor meet, she was a member of the second-place 4x800 relay team and was seventh in the mile (5:15.94). She just missed earning all-conference accolades outdoors when she finished seventh in the 1,500-meter run (4:51.80). Newcomers include Pam Bird, Nicole Gandy and Abbie Smith, all who ran during the cross country season. Bird was especially impressive, leading the team at the MIAA meet where she finished 11th overall. Field Events Senior Becky Kudrna is the lone returner from the field events. Last year, she finished 12th in the weight throw at the MIAA indoor meet (43 4 ) and was 12th at the outdoor competition in the discus (119 3 ) and hammer (136 9 ). Lainie Bohnsack is the only freshman in the field events and will compete in the high jump.

6 The 2003 Truman men s track and field team was also hit hard by graduation following last season but is optimistic about competing well at the conference meets and getting individuals qualified for nationals. Sprints/Hurdles Truman is especially young in the sprint and hurdle events heading into the 2003 season. Sophomore Walter Washington is the lone returning all-conference performer in the sprints. Last year, he earned outdoor honors in the 400-meters after finishing fourth (48.58) and placed eighth in the 200-meter dash (22.58). At the indoor conference meet, Washington finished fifth in the 400-meter finals with a time of Sophomore Dan Nichols and senior Nolan White are other returners to the Bulldogs squad. A rich class of newcomers in the sprints include Jason Douglas, Richard Mayson, Jon Spurgeon and Dan Zwilling. Mayson could also see action in hurdle and jumping events, Spurgeon is another hurdler and Zwilling has the ability to perform in the decathlon. Mid-Distance/Steeplechase The mid-distance races could be Truman s strong area this year with the return of two all- Americas and five all-conference runners. Senior Matt Helbig advanced to nationals last year for the second time and brought back his Pat Boyle earned all-conference honors after finishing third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last year. He was one of five Bulldogs to finish among the top seven in the event. first all-america award. He finished fifth in the country in the 1,500-meters with a time of 3: He also earned all-america honors in cross country this past fall. Helbig is defending MIAA champion in the 1,500-meters outdoors with a time of 3: At the outdoor conference meet, he also finished 15th in the meters and he was the second-best runner on this year s cross country squad. He earned allconference indoor honors last year, finishing second in the mile (4:13.17). Last year, the Bulldogs took five of the top seven spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the MIAA outdoor meet and all five of those runners return. Seniors Brian McQueary won the event, Pat Boyle was third and Dan Boyle was fourth. Sophomores Ryan French was fifth and Andy Person finished seventh. McQueary went on to compete at nationals in that event and earned all-america honors by finishing seventh (9:34.21). Mike Nelson, a former all-conference runner in the outdoor 1,500-meters and on the indoor two-mile relay team, just missed indoor honors last year when he finished eighth in the mile run (4:22.84) and was a member of the 4x800 relay team that finished sixth (8:08.77). Dan McLaughlin returns after a productive freshman season including finishing 13th in the 800-meter MIAA outdoor preliminaries. Shane Praiswater and Aaron Wells will be the newcomers at the middle distance races. MEN S TRACK SEASON PREVIEW 5 Distance As expected from one of the top cross country teams in the region, the Bulldogs will be strong in the distance events and it is the area in which the team has the most depth. 19 18 /CROSS COUNTRY HISTORY /CROSS COUNTRY HAS RICH HISTORY Both of the men s and women s cross country and track and field squads have had their share of success throughout the history of the programs. Since the 1920s, the three men s teams have combined to win 47 MIAA championships, 74 athletes earned all- America honors, six win individual national championships and one earned an Olympic gold medal. Since the 1970s, the women s teams have combined for seven conference titles, 28 athletes earning all-america honors and three winning individual national titles. Truman began competing in track duals in 1909 and the school sponsored cross country races beginning in The first MIAA outdoor meet was held in 1924 and the Bulldogs brought home its first two titles in 1930 and 1931 led by head coach Chauncey Simpson. Six indoor conference meets were held prior to 1943 but they began to be run on a regular basis in MIAA cross country meets began in 1957 and Truman had immediate success, winning the championship in just the third year and starting a run of six straight titles. In all, the Bulldogs finished first or second in the first 12 years they fielded an entire team. The school s run of cross country titles coincided with the best years of track. Beginning in 1959, Truman won 10 straight indoor and outdoor titles. In the 12 years after that, the team won nine more indoor titles, five outdoor championships and were runnerups seven times. The Bulldogs also had success on the national level during this period. The cross country team finished among the top 10 four times from including a best-ever second in The track team finished 12th or better in nine national outdoor championships between The best finish in Truman s track history was third which came in 1972 when three athletes brought home individual titles. The track head coach during this time was Kenneth Gardner who led the team from In all, he won 34 MIAA track titles and finished runnerups in 12 other conference track meets. He was also head coach of the cross country squad from and finished second four times in MIAA meets and advanced to three national races. Individual stars were also numerous in this period. Current men s head coach Ed Schneider won the 1964 NCAA cross country meet, leading the Bulldogs to their secondplace national finish and also won three MIAA titles. Ron Werling also won three MIAA titles in cross country from Five track and field athletes also won NCAA individual titles. Fred Banks won the yard dash. Don Allbritton won the pole vault in 1969 and the decathlon in Tom Geredine was also a multiple winner taking the long jump in 1971 and the triple jump in Larry Jones won three NCAA Division II titles in the 400m/440-yards races. He was also among a handful of Bulldogs who competed in the NCAA Division I meet and took home first-place in two 440-yard indoor races and one 440-yard outdoor race. Dan Futrell was the last Truman men s athlete to win an individual title, winning first in the m run. Schneider took over as cross country coach in 1975 and track head coach in In that time, he has built Truman into a cross country power while keeping the team competitive on the track side. Under Schneider, the cross country team has won four MIAA titles, three regional titles and advanced to 11 national meets. Both his 1994 and 1995 squads finished third in the country. Jeremy Struttman and Thad Bartram each won multiple all-america honors in cross country in this span. Schneider s track team was runnerups in the MIAA in the 1998 outdoor meet and finished lower than fifth just three times in 38 indoor and outdoor conference meets. His squads have also scored at the NCAA outdoor meet 14 times and the indoor meet eight times. The top track athlete since 1984 was Ray Armstead who finished second in the NCAA Division II meet, fourth in the Division I meet and advanced to the Olympics where he won a gold medal (see below). Three other Bulldogs have been national runnerups under Schneider: Rob Jessen (1992, indoor 5000m), Chad Froelker (2000, decathlon) and James Walton (2002, indoor long jump). The women s history doesn t go back as far but they have also had their share of success. Prior to , the team competed in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), before the NCAA and MIAA started sponsoring women s sports in John Cochrane has been the head coach of the women s squad since Under Cochrane, the Bulldogs have won six MIAA titles, had individual runners compete in seven cross country national meets and had teams score in 20 indoor and outdoor NCAA track meets. The cross country squad in 1979, coached by Schneider, won the MAIAW title. The following season, Cindy Springman won the MAIAW individual title and became the first runner to compete in a national meet. Since the MIAA started in 1981, Truman finished lower than fourth just four times and finally broke through with a MIAA title in Kerry Knepper was one of the top cross country runners in school history, finishing in the top three in the MIAA four times, including winning the 1987 meet, and ran in four NCAA meets, placing as high as fifth in The women s track and field teams have been even more successful, regularly finding themselves among the MIAA leaders. The team won its first conference title in 1983 at the outdoor meet and then won back-to-back indoor titles in Its best period could be the last four years as the team won both indoor and outdoor titles in 2000 and finished runnerups in five other league meets. Nationally, the highest finish for the Bulldogs came in 1990 when they were eighth at the NCAA indoor meet. Truman has scored in the last three NCAA indoor meets and the last five outdoor competitions. Deb Carter was the first women s track star, winning the 60-meters at the AIAW national indoor meet in 1978 and placing in the 100-meters at the outdoor meet in 1978 and Marlene Frahm won the first NCAA individual title for the Bulldogs, winning the 1985 indoor and outdoor shot put contests. Saundra Hester was the last Bulldog to win an individual national crown after taking first in the m hurdles. Cochrane s team have always been strong in the relay events. The 4x100 relay teams at Truman have won seven MIAA titles, including the last five, and the 4x400 team has taken first in the MIAA five times, including three out of the last four years. Other top performers on the women s side include Vicki Perez who won two MIAA titles and all-america awards in the discus, including second in the nation in Knepper also had success in track, winning 10 MIAA titles, including three during the 1990 outdoor meet. Molly Kandlbinder played in a key role in the Bulldogs 2000 titles as she won three indoor and three outdoor events. TRUMAN S ARMSTEAD CAPTURES OLYMPIC GOLD Ray Armstead, who finished his Truman track career in 1984, is the first Bulldog intercollegiate athlete to compete in the Olympics and earn a gold medal. The St. Louis-Northwest High School product captured the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles as a member of the U.S. 1,600-meter relay team. Armstead carried the baton on the second leg of the relay race, turning in a split of 43.9, his personal best and the second fastest effort by a member of the U.S. quartet. The American foursome logged a time of 2:57.91, one of the fastest clockings ever. After the Olympics, Armstead competed in the 400-meter dash at four European international meets. He finished first at Koblenz, West Germany, and at the Golden Gala in Rome. At that meet, he beat the meter Olympic gold medalist, Victor Markin of the Soviet Union, and the 1976 gold medalist, Alberto Juantorena of Cuba. Armstead also finished ahead of the 1984 gold medalist, Alonzo Babers, at Koblenz. His best 1986 finish in the 400-meters was 45.21, at the Houston Sports Festival. His best personal time of in the 400 meters was charted at Zurich, Switzerland, on the 1984 European tour. In 1986, Armstead was ranked fifth among 400-meter performers. In 1987, Armstead was back on track, hoping to obtain another Olympic Gold Medal. He continued his training, under the sponsorship of Nike and Accusplit, for the 1988 Seoul games. Armstead qualified for the 1988 Olympic Trials. He finished fifth in the semfinals but did not earn a position on the 4x400 relay or open 400-meter.

31 30 TRUMAN STATE UNIVERSITY Truman State University is Missouri s only state-wide public liberal arts and sciences university and the only public university designated highly selective by the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education. Founded in 1867 as a normal school, Truman State University became the official name of Missouri s liberal arts and sciences university on July 1, Formerly known as Northeast Missouri State University, the change in name coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Missouri Legislature s action which changed the University s mission from that of a regional comprehensive university to the statewide liberal arts and sciences university. The new name complements the mission and honors the only Missourian to serve as president of the United States. Now a nationally recognized university, Truman is a leader in its undaunting commitment to assessment and accountability. Truman s program of assessment allows the University to measure the results of the teaching-learning process and gather critical information on student growth and development to ensure that graduates are prepared for future success. Truman is consistently recognized nationally for the high quality education it provides. For the past six years, Truman has Why was the nickname, Bulldogs, selected for Truman State University? O.C. So far as is known, this term wasn t used again until the spring of At the time, a committee of students, including the late President Emeritus Walter H. You can also read about Truman in numerous other publications such as Fiske Guide to Colleges, The Princeton Review and Kaplan Newsweek College Guide. Truman s curriculum provides each student, regardless of intended specialization, with a foundation of knowledge appropriate to a traditional liberal arts and sciences education. It also requires major field specialization, providing each student with in-depth knowledge and mastery of a discipline. This exemplary undergraduate education provides graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful upon graduation. Approximately 40 percent of Truman s graduates enter graduate programs and professional schools in the two years following their graduation. Truman s 6,000 students pursue degrees in 42 undergraduate and nine graduate areas of study in eight academic divisions. Truman s students consistently rank among the highest in their high school graduating class. For example, the fall 2001 class has an average ACT score of 27, the 91st percentile nationally, while the high school grade-point was a 3.72 on a 4.00 scale. In addition to their academic ability, more than 99 percent had leadership roles in high school. Truman State University is committed to the advancement of knowledge, to freedom of thought and inquiry, and to the personal, social and intellectual growth of each of its students. The University strives to maintain a recognized standard of excellence in all of its educational endeavors and a responsible stewardship of the resources provided by the people of Missouri. Truman is headed by a Board of Governors appointed by the Governor of Missouri. Seven are voting members from throughout the state. In addition, there are two out-of-state members and a student representative who do not vote. Current members include Matthew C. Barnes, John W. Briscoe, Sarah B. Burkemper, Peter T. Ewell, Ph.D, Thomas R.
