2 Bulldogs Seek To Overcome Key Losses in 2001 Defenders Perhaps the most daunting challenge facing Bilbao this season will be patching together an effective defensive unit to replace the four graduated backs, including three-time all-region sweeper Mike Enright. The pressure should be eased a bit by the return of senior Chris Rahe, who took a medical redshirt last year after suffering a torn meniscus. Rahe should anchor the otherwise inexperienced defense. The remainder of playing time in the backfield will be up for grabs among last year s substitutes and this year s newcomers, including senior Matt Cox, junior Nick Garner, freshmen Dave Sodemann, Tim Gerler, Andy Lakers and Norwegian native Stian Gundersen Team Captains Brett Coppage, Matt Byers and Chris Rahe. As the Truman men s soccer program approaches a decade of winning soccer, the focus in Bulldog country has shifted from the building of a successful program to the maintenance of one. In 2000, the Dogs posted an record, the eighth consecutive winning season for the team, confirming the program s place among the topflight schools in Division II. In 2001, head coach Alf Bilbao must replace eight departed seniors, including NSCAA/adidas all-central region secondteam selections of forward Ryan Swan and sweeper Mike Enright, and midfielders Heine Andersen, a four-year starter in the Quick Facts Location: Kirksville, Mo Founded: 1867 Enrollment: 6,000 President: Dr. Jack Magruder Director of Athletics: Jerry Wollmering Phone: Affiliation: NCAA Division II Conference: Independent Nickname: Bulldogs Colors: Purple & White Head Coach: Alf Bilbao Truman Record: (.720) (3 yrs) Career Record: (.578) (4 yrs) Alma Mater: Truman (1993) Office Phone: (660) Best Time to Call: Mornings Letterwinners Returning/Lost: 12/8 Starters Returning/Lost: 5/6 Facility: Truman Soccer Park Capacity (Built): permanent seating for 250 (1983) center, and team captain Jeremy Jackson, as well as the remainder of the defensive corps of David Salvatierra, Mike Zung and Jake Sirna. Despite these heavy losses, Bulldog fans have high hopes for another winning season and possible tournament run. The bulk of these hopes rest on the capable shoulders of the Dogs top returning senior, two-time third-team all-america striker Matt Byers, who already owns Truman career records for goals (44) and points (117). Byers is joined by a cast that includes eight seniors and six newcomers, all of whom will be striving to add another chapter to the winning tradition of Bulldog soccer. Goalkeepers The battle-tested netminding tandem of T.J. Dube and David Wiebenga returns for a fourth and final season. The pair of seniors have shared goalkeeping duties since their freshman campaigns and again look to be locked in a dead heat for the No. 1 spot. They are so equal in what they bring to the team that it is always the toughest decision I have to make, says Bilbao. I think we re very fortunate in this situation to have two goalkeepers that are that good, because we don t lose anything if we make a change. Sophomore Adam Johnson gives Bilbao a third option between the pipes. 1 Midfield A versatile collection of midfielders has become a hallmark of Truman soccer under Bilbao, and this year s squad looks to continue this trend. 3 Season Preview Continued will share time in the crucial position of defensive mid. Coppage suffered a knee injury in preseason training and may miss the first few weeks of the season. On the offensive end of the center mid, senior Charlie McDaniel and freshman Brenton Freeman should see the majority of the action. Sophomore Bryan DeFoe and freshmen Chad Baldwin and Luke Bolar also may see time near the center stripe. On the wide sides, senior Matt Gross and Bulgarian transfer Hristo Gyurov will share time on the left while sophomore Jeremy Crenshaw and freshman Brent Rauch will do the streaking up the right side. 21 Justin Shew 14 Ricky Vigil 16 Matthew Gross 17 Hristo Gyurov 2 Yosuka Aikawa 3 Nick Garner 25 Dave Sodemann 22 Stian Gundersen 11 Charlie McDaniel 15 Brenton Freeman 8 Luke Bolar 18 Chad Baldwin 7 Brett Coppage 6 Mike Roth 20 Bryan DeFoe 12 Chris Rahe 20 Andy Lakers Forwards Byers drives the Bulldog offense up front where he will look to add to his goalscoring records in his senior campaign. Byers is joined by fellow senior Justin Shew who inherits the second starting forward spot from Ryan Swan. Sophomore Ricky Vigil, who scored huge goals coming off the bench last year, will again be the offensive sparkplug sub. Freshman Steve Cox should also see time up front once he gets over a preseason ankle injury. Schedule Bilbao s 2001 squad faces a slate filled with top-flight regional opponents, former conference rivals and a pair of challenging out-of-region road trips. The Bulldogs postseason fate may well be decided within the first three weeks of the season, as they will square off with six 5 Matt Byers 21 Steve Cox 19 Jeremy Crenshaw 24 Brent Rauch 4 Matt Cox 24 Tim Gerler of the top teams in the Central region right off the bat. The season opens with a trip east to Northern Kentucky and then Indianapolis. The next weekend brings the ninth annual Quincy Soccer Bowl, where Truman will meet the host Quincy Hawks on Saturday night and then Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Sunday. The home agenda gets underway the weekend of Sept. 8-9 as two of the top teams in not only the region, but the nation as well, come to Kirksville on consecutive days. Saturday s opponent is Wisconsin-Parkside and Sunday s is Lewis (Ill.), two teams that knocked off the Dogs in 2000 and earned the Central region tournament bids at season s end. Revenge will be in the air as Truman takes aim at these top-ranked foes. Lewis enters the season ranked No. 4 in Division II and Parkside opens at No. 10. Its right back on the road the next week, as the Bulldogs travel to Memphis, Tenn. to match up with Christian Brothers in a Friday night tilt, then further south to Alabama-Huntsville for a Sunday afternoon encounter. The road weary Dogs will return to Kirksville for a brief respite on Sept. 22 for a match with Southwest Baptist, part of a Saturday afternoon double-dip with the women s teams. No time to get comfortable for the Truman men, however, as they head right back out the next day for a match at Missouri-Rolla. The Dogs will try to solve the mystery of the Miners, a team Truman has not been able to defeat since The UMR game kicks off another brutal road trip of six matches spanning more than a month. Over this stretch, the Bulldogs will travel to Texas for matches with Incarnate Word (San Antonio) and St. Edwards (Austin), as well as to Kansas City to take on historical rival Rockhurst, Evansville for a tilt with Southern Indiana, and Jefferson City to match up with former conference foe Lincoln University. After playing only three of 15 contests at home, Truman will have earned its season-ending three-game homestand. On October s final weekend, the Bulldogs will entertain Missouri-St. Louis and St. Joseph s (Ind.). The regular season concludes at home with Missouri Southern on Nov Dube 31 Wiebenga 0 Johnson 2
