1 UMKC Track and Field Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 This Week In Kangaroo Track and Field Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC track and field squad is headed back to Iowa State for its third indoor meet of the season. The Kangaroos will take place in the 18th annual Iowa State Classic on Friday, Feb. 13-Thursday, Feb. 14 inside Lied Recreation Center. Friday s field events begin at 1:30 p.m. with the women s pole vault and the running events will start with the women s distance medley relay at 3:05 p.m. Saturday will be broken up into two sessions, a morning and afternoon session. The morning session begins with the women s mile at 10:00 a.m. The afternoon session starts at 12:30 p.m. with the women s high jump and 1:00 p.m. with the women s 600-yard run. Live stats will be available at Those wishing to follow along with the meet should go to the track and field page and then click on the schedule for the live stats link. This will be the Kangaroos last meet to prepare for The Summit League Indoor Championships. UMKC will be hosting the event in Sterling, Ill., at the Westwood Sports Complex and Expo on Friday, Feb. 27-Saturday, Feb. 28. Lee Records NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark and Breaks Schools Record Transfer jumper Marcus Lee had a record setting day at the Mule Relays on Saturday afternoon. The junior broke the school record in the triple jump and hit a provisional qualifying mark with Lee is the first Kangaroo to post a NCAA qualifying mark this season. Deandre Free was the previous record holder for the men s indoor triple jump. Free recorded a jump of 50-0 in the 2002 season. In his career with the Kangaroos, Free was The Summit League indoor athlete of the year in 2001, was the two-time league indoor champion in the triple jump and a three-time league indoor champion in the long jump. Lee Produces Top Results at Mule Relays The UMKC track and field squad took a handful of student-athletes to Warrensburg, Mo., to compete in the Mule Relays on Sat., Feb. 7. Marcus Lee had a big day for the Kangaroos, competing in both the triple and long jump events. Lee recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the men s triple jump with a UMKC school record mark of (15.58m). Lee also competed in the men s long jump at the Mule Relays and walked away with a first place finish for UMKC. The junior finished at (7.35m) for a personal best and now ranks third in the UMKC record books in the event. All Day In other field events, Oscar Emegano and Brad Chesney finished in the topfive in the men s high jump at (1.92m), with Emegano taking fourth and Chesney finishing fifth, respectively. Chesney s final mark in the event was a personal best. Charlie Larson recorded a fifth place finish in the men s triple jump with a mark of (14.19), which is a season-best for the senior. Larson finished 12th in the men s long jump with another season-best mark of (6.43m). 1

Aubrey Frederking ran a personal best in the 800 meters, taking sixth with a time of 2: Katherine Williams competed in both the long and triple jumps, recording a personal best in the long. Williams finished 16th in the long jump with a mark of and 11th in the triple at Kangaroos In The Summit League The UMKC men are competing well in The Summit League overall standings in jumps and the 4x400-meter relay. Headed in to meet at Iowa State this weekend, Marcus Lee is no. one in The Summit League in the triple jump and no. two in the long jump. Both of Lee s top marks on the season were posted at the Mule Relays this past weekend. Leading the league in the men s long jump is Jared Vlastiun of SDSU with a mark of that he reached back in December. Charlie Larson is fifth in the triple jump with his season-high mark of In the 4x400-meter relay action, the men s time of 3:21.20 ran at the Wildcat Invitational is third in the league right now. Kangaroos Finish With Five Champions at Wildcat Invitational UMKC wrapped up day two of the Wildcat Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., with five champions, 19 top-five finishes and 15 student-athletes recording personal bests. The men had three studentathletes and one relay team take first, while Sakia Taylor was the lone Kangaroo on the women s team to record a first-place finish. Taylor ran a personal best in the women s 400 meters and crossed the finish line at 1: Alex Lopez set a new personal record in the men s 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.72 to take first in the event and D Arby Parks took first in the 600-yard run with a personal best of 1: The men s 4x400-meter relay team of Lopez, Larry Hill, Parks and Keenan Simmons recorded a season high 3:21.20 for a first place finish. In the field events, Marcus Lee finished at in the men s triple jump for a first place finish as well. Also in the triple jump, Charlie Larson finished third at while D.C. Okonta finished fifth at Simmons set personal records in both the men s 200 meters (22.70) and the 400 meters (52.28), finishing second and fourth, respectively. On the women s side, Natalee Dyke and Tierra Jones took second and third in the 200 meters, clocking in at and 26.95, respectively. Etagegn O Neill ran for a personal best and a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.19 and Maggie Light took fifth in the event at 2: In distance action, Alex Harkins finished the women s 3,000 meters in and on the men s side Laban Mutai set a personal record in the event at 9:02.54 with both finishing third in their respective races. The Summit League Releases Indoor Track and Field Preseason Poll The Summit League released its indoor track and field preseason poll on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The UMKC men s and women s teams were picked to finish seventh in the league. The women received 12 points while the men tallied eight.
