2 Spring Beginning Sailing Improve your self-confidence, teamwork, judgment and responsibility as you enter the FUN world of sailing. From the first day, you ll be on the water, learning to rig your boat, steer, tack and jibe. Please enroll under the appropriate age group. 3 NEW Format - Lower Fee Twilight Canoe Tour Canoe your way around Upper Newport Bay with an experienced naturalist as you explore one of Southern California s best kept secrets during this 2 1/2-hour family activity. Participants receive an event patch. Class meets at the Newport Aquatic Center (NAC). 4 Spring Spring Break Sensation Enrichment and Fun Offered in Conjunction with Amuseum April 9 12 Monday Thursday Time: 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Fee: $ /9 4/12 Morning enrichment and afternoon fun! Eight- and nine-year-old boys and girls will learn about whales, sharks sea birds, and try their hand at seascape art. In the afternoon, they will go sailing and experience stand up paddleboarding. Ten- to 13 -year-olds will be challenged by hands on workshops investigating the local ocean, environment and coastal wildlife in the morning. Afternoons will find them participating in their choice of two of the listed on-the-water classes. Participants should bring a lunch. A swim check will be administered to all participants the first day of camp. 5 Safety & Skills First Aid (2 Lessons) Have fun learning how and when to perform first aid and CPR, as well as how to keep yourself and others safe. Apply what you learn in this class so you and your family will be better prepared to overcome the challenges of emergency situations. Learn to identify and understand cloud formations. The morning session of JAC will start at 9 a.m. and go until 12 p.m., followed by an afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Youth who participate in both sessions will have completed the requirements for five Webelos pins: Aquanaut, Citizen, Engineer, Naturalist, and Showman. All youth will receive a certificate stating which requirements they have fulfilled. Summer Registration Opens on February 15 To have the most flexibility in planning your summer activities, please sign up early. Many of our classes do fill-up completely! If you have any questions, we welcome the opportunity to speak with you. Please call or visit our office for assistance. In addition, we no longer charge a fee for transferring your child to another class or another week, when space allows. Registration cut-off is 3 p.m. of the Wednesday before start of class. Proper Attire All classes require closed-toe shoes (no sandals or roller shoes). Please note that shoes worn during boating classes will get wet. Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, and water are strongly encouraged. Life jackets are provided for all aquatics classes and must be worn at all times on the docks and on the boats. Refund Policy Refunds will only be given for cancellations received two weeks prior to the start of class. A $20 (per class) processing fee will be charged for all refunds. Transfer to another scheduled class will be processed without addidtional fees on a space available basis. Electronic Devices No cell phones, I-Pods or electronic games are permitted during classes. Sign up for summer classes by April 30, 2012 and receive a 5% Early Bird Discount. The Newport Sea Base is a non-profit, youth maritime facility, open to the public. Nautical Knots (1 Week) Knots, knots, knots - which ones do you need and how do you make them? Learn and perfect your knots, bends, and hitches. Not every salty sailor knows how to tie a Monkey s Fist, but you might after taking this class. Be sure to bring a sack lunch to eat underway. SAILBOAT RACING (2 Weeks) Sailing is a brain-game since you use only the wind, your knowledge, and the equipment to make a boat go - and it takes even more brain power to make your boat go fast! In this class, you will increase your skills, practicing both as skipper and as crew. In addition to proper sailing attire, sailing gloves and a countdown timer wristwatch are recommended. Students participating in Thursday s deep sea fishing adventure must arrive at the Newport Sea Base by 11:45 a.m. to ride by pontoon boat to Newport Landing. Students arriving late are responsible for their own transportation to the landing. Homework includes making a home wiring diagram and an energy conservation plan. 10 Summer Summer day CAMPS Junior Aquatics Camp (1 Week) Ahoy mates! All girls and boys, ages 8-10, are invited to experience a week of fun, excitement and learning new skills. Join the Junior Aquatics Camp fun and you will soon find yourself paddling boats, hunting for treasure and spying for marine mammals on a deep sea whale watch. NEW for 2012 are weekly themes to add fun and excitement to your adventure! To enjoy the whole experience, sign up for both the morning and afternoon sessions. But if you can t, that s OK too. You will still have a boatful of fun. REFERENCE MAP 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 9 a.m. 12 p.m. 6 7 $100 9 Future Events Coastal Clean-Up Day This Coastal Clean-Up effort is held annually on the third Saturday of September. In 2011, Orange County Scouts and Sea Scouts joined over 1,200 volunteers and removed 18,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from the Upper Newport Bay. Contact the Newport Bay Conservancy: Day/Date Saturday 9/15 Christmas Boat Parade 2012 The Newport Sea Base invites you to join us on our lawn for an incredible view of the 104th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. We provide the chairs, and the Sea Scouts sell food and beverages. Bring your friends and family, and snuggle under a blanket, as the acclaimed parade illuminates the harbor. 11 Scout Information Merit Badge Courses The symbol above indicates that a Merit Badge is available. Participants should bring a Merit Badge book to each class. Scouts should also bring their blue cards to the first day of class. The Newport Sea Base does not provide or sell blue cards. Merit Badge classes also open to all youth ages First Aid Prerequisites First Aid Merit Badge is a prerequisite for the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge. Other Merit Badges require that Scouts demonstrate their ability to perform various first aid procedures. Those requirements are prerequisites for completion of the badges at Newport Sea Base. A copy of a signed First Aid Merit Badge blue card serves as proof of both kinds of prerequisites. Classes with a first aid prerequisite are denoted by the symbol above.
