3 From the Commander: Joyce Newman, S Dear squadron members. It has been a rewarding year, one with continued success of our squadron and one of great experience for me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you as your commander; it was a great honor for me. The many successes we had during my command were directly attributable to the involvement of our members and the extraordinary leadership of our bridge officers, department heads, committees, commander s aides, Flag Lieutenant/Protocol, Law officer, photographer and Chaplain who was also Parliamentarian. One of my goals was to create programs to increase membership involvement and retention and to get our six-month members involved in volunteer work, to attend social activities and to join the squadron as paying members. We have a membership of 277. Thirteen were trial members that became active dues paying members taking squadron advance courses, participating in squadron activities and/or volunteering of their time. Membership will continue to be one of our top priorities. The challenges we faced will now be in the capable hands of newly elected Commander Darryl Aubrey, SN, RIVIERA BEACH MUNICIPAL MARINA A Friendly, Clean & Safe Marina WET SLIPS FUEL DOCK SHOWERS LAUNDRY SHIP S STORE FISHING & DIVE CHARTERS Visit the TIKI WATERFRONT SEA GRILL For a wide variety of Seafood & other Specialties They also Feature a LIVE BAND 200 EAST 13 TH STREET, RIVIERA BEACH, FL Fax: VHF CHANNEL 16 RIVIERA BEACH The Best Waterfront City in Which to Live, Work & Play and his Board of Directors, Chairs of the Departments and Committees as they take the helm for the squadron year. These elected squadron officers and volunteers will continue their efforts to bring better results in recruiting, retention, membership growth and reaching out to the community. The pace of technological evolution is hard for many of us to comprehend, but it is a reality. We will continue to build on our past year s efforts in improving our HQ s internet access capabilities and develop new ways to digitally connect and communicate with the boating public. At the core of our squadron s existence stands our mission to provide boating education. We will continue to find new and creative ways of improving our course offerings and to extend our on-the-water training modules to as many courses as possible. We are saddened by the loss of some of our members who passed over the horizon this year: members P/C Richard Hofmann, P, P/C Ken MacPherson, AP, and his lovely wife Irene Abby MacPherson, S. This year will be an exciting time for all of us with the on-going celebration of the United States Power Squadrons 100 th Year ceremonies. As always, we will continue to strive to fulfill the concepts of USPS to be recognized as the national leader for improving safety through outstanding educational programs and a growing membership. Congratulations to John, Stephen and of course, Phil. Phil also completed teaching the second Marine Electronics Course Communication, and is now awaiting test results for the participants. John Litwinka completed teaching Engine Maintenance and we are awaiting test results. In addition, we offered Sail, Trim and Rigging, taught by Art Dodd, SN, on 4 May-- the last in the series of seminars for this season. Every month we continue to offer our excellent ABC (public) boating course, teaching seamanship and safe boating to the general public. See photo & dates below. The Educational Department is planning its Course Schedule and Seminar Offerings. Watch for announcements in the next (September) Afterdeck. Anyone interested in teaching one of our courses or seminars, please contact me (561) or by at rosie_cheekz45@yahoo.com. I held an instructors meeting at HQ to review policy and procedures, firm up dates of offerings, as well as provide training for the newly purchased instructional equipment. These dedicated teachers offered very constructive ideas and suggestions ensuring that our programs continue to provide quality instruction in a professional manner and meets the needs of our members. Charles Giambalvo, P, demonstrated the use of our new equipment to the instructors as well as how to incorporate technology and the internet into the classes thus enhancing instruction. Thank you to Charles and to those in attendance what wonderful people to work with. 5 1350 Miles to Windward in 5 Days! By Jim Bloom, SN (2003) You read that right, 1350 miles to windward in five days with no wear and tear on the boat or the crew. It was easier than I had ever imagined it could be and even then I learned a few lessons that would have made it even easier. Early last Fall our friends Dave and Bev on Cloverleaf, a 60 Krogan trawler, asked if we would like to join them and have Valiant Lady shipped to Mallorca in late October via Dockwise Yacht Transport. Judy and I thought it sounded like a wonderful idea as we had chartered in various European areas and the thought of having Valiant Lady, our Valiant 40, there was quite appealing. We checked out the price and were amazed at the affordability. We had checked out such a service three years earlier and were astounded at how much it cost at that time. It was now nearly half the price! Our concern was finding a place to winter the boat in Mallorca in mid-december. Our friends, in the warmth of their big pilot house/ saloon, were going to high tail it for Barcelona, a wonderful city any time of the year. This cold 150-mile trip to weather in November in our open cockpit did not appeal to us. It was moot anyhow. The October/November sailings were cancelled and the threat of a War on the continent made us very uncomfortable about going to the Med. We began to look at various alternative sites now that we were hooked on shipping. The most appealing was to ship Valiant Lady from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas. Then we realized that a February sailing was going to Martinique. Why not go the extra few hundred miles on the ship and eliminate the windward slog from St. Thomas to the Leeward and Windward Islands, especially since the price was the same? Even though we have geriatrisized Valiant Lady with three power winches and a Pro-furl roller furling boom, why not catch the Virgins on the way back to Florida? The die had been cast. We sent in our deposit to have Valiant Lady shipped to Martinique in mid- February. The mid-february shipment was delayed until early March. The most frustrating part of shipping our boat was getting an actual shipping date in order to make airline reservations for reasonably priced tickets. Unlike some of the transits that take two or more weeks, our transit time was only five days. The shipping company too did not have an actual date because of the nature of loading and unloading as well as a transit of the Panama Canal in our particular inbound portion of the ship s itinerary, at least that s what they told us. After many phone calls and reservation changes we were finally given March 5 as the shipping date. This was on February 28 only after we had to fight our way past the switchboard operator with the threat of cancellation. We were told to be at the ship in Port Everglades at 10:00 AM. Not wanting to be late, we were there at 9:00 AM, this gave us an opportunity to watch them unloading the shipment just arrived from St. Thomas. Loading was a well-organized affair. The captain gave us the preassigned loading order and docking positions over the VHF so we could fender properly and set dock lines. When arranging for shipment each yacht had to furnish the shipping company with a detailed plan of the yacht s draft, under water shape, overall length including bowsprits and davits, etc. They also had to know if the keel could support the weight of the yacht. With this information in hand they knew what type of platform they would need under each vessel and length of poppets. All were lying on the ship s deck as we entered the flooded hold/deck, not unlike entering a lock. The captain, John Slot, a Dutch sailor who we learned keeps his Pearson 36 in Turkey, kept telling us by radio from the bridge to come a little faster. Don t be shy, he said and as I sped up the crew on the walls kept telling me to slow down. This was the only mixed messages I got, otherwise the line handling and instructions were great. Trying to understanding some of the Dutch and Philippine accents made it necessary to ask what exactly they wanted a couple of times. In addition, the noise level with the engines running inside this metal box made it even more difficult to hear what they were shouting down at you. All in all everything went smoothly as far as the ship was con cerned. The crew was a good reflection of the captain whom we got to know, friendly, competent and professional. First we got our dock lines up to the line handlers and they also threw us a stern line to use as a brake. Once stopped and in position the crew lowered heavy adjustable web straps and instructed us where to place them so they could control the yacht s position while the water was being let out of the hold. With the boats positioned and engines stopped divers went below to put the platforms and poppets in place making adjustments beneath each boat as needed. Once all of the water was out and poppets in place the poppets were welded to the deck so they will not move during the voyage. The welding is probably the most time consuming portion of the entire process requiring nearly a day to complete. At forty feet we were the largest of the six sailboats on board and four powerboats ranging from Sea Eagle a one hundred-three foot sport fisherman and its thirty-five foot tender to a Catalina 27, Rum Runner. We were a total of only ten boats making the trip. The new owner of one vessel scheduled to be on the ship called to say they could not be at the ship until 4:00 PM. Because of the welding work the captain had to raise the back gate and begin raising the ship so the deck would be dry. Dockwise advised the skipper that they could hire a crane to lift the forty-two foot yacht on board at an extra cost of $2,000. The owner accepted the lift. The moral of the story - be early. The only criticism we have is with the Ft. Lauderdale office and the lack of information. We found that a little more detailed pre-loading information from the shipping company would have been helpful. They had a standard information sheet but that information seemed to be completely wrong from what actually happens during the loading process. We found that we were given a lot of misinformation by the people in the Ft. Lauderdale office. Possibly they had bad information such as who could go with the vessel. We were told that the vessel had to be over eighty feet, but the people on a thirty-foot sailboat went with the ship. We had asked early on to go with the ship but were refused passage. Nadine Massily, the Dockwise Agent in Martinique, was very helpful. She told us the ship would actually be unloaded in Le Marin and not Fort de France, as we had been told by people in Ft. Lauderdale. She also recommended a very nice hotel where we could wait for the ship. The ship arrived in Le Marin on Monday just when the captain said it would. Okay, they were an hour late but after 1350 miles to windward and having to pick up a pilot in Fort de France what do you want? We met to board the ship at 0700 an un-godly hour to be up, not a coffee shop or patisserie in sight. To our surprise the boats were still high and dry when we boarded. Capt. John, whom we had dinner with the night before, was a man of his word and had coffee waiting for us. We waited in the ship s office where we watched the water entering the hold and finally the divers as they went down to remove the poppets. By 1030 we were aboard Valiant Lady and backing out of the ship and heading for the anchorage. Would we ship the boat again? Yes! I had removed the head sails and dodger though it was not really necessary just extra work. Would I remove them again? Yes, even though the crew cleaned the boats the day they arrived in Martinique there was still a residue of grit from the ship s engines that had to be scrubbed off. We did the first scrubbing at anchor with our saltwater hose and Boat Zoap. We did a fresh water rinse at the dock where we finished our provisioning. Had we not taken the headsails and dodger off they would have had a coat of grime also. Our mainsail was in the boom with a cover on it so all we needed to do was remove the cover and clean it. The dinghy would have been in its bag so like the main only the cover would need washing. The dinghy I would leave on deck well secured. Shipping the boat to a cruising ground may sound a bit wimpy, but after talking to Laurie and Jack on Horizons and hearing about their repair expenses in Bermuda, where they had not planned to go in the first place, I was reassured our money was well spent. Our plan is to spend a couple of years in the Lesser Antilles and sail back to Florida by way of the Bahamas. We are still interested in cruising different areas around world. We (one of us, at least) have aged out of the trials of passage making and crossing oceans. Yacht transport, at a reasonable price, may extend our cruising time for another fifteen to twenty years.
