Featured Speaker Jim Bloom, SN will present a program about his transit through the Panama Canal on a National Geographic ship. In January, Judy (AP) and Jim (SN) Bloom made a Pacific to Atlantic transit of the Panama Canal on the relatively small, 150 (60 passenger) expedition ship National Geographic Sea Lion. The Sea Lion was dwarfed by the neighboring container ships enabling them to actually see the workings of the canal from close up. They will be sharing this experience with the squadron at the April meeting with a slide presentation of their transit. Jim said that the transit had been on his bucket list since his pre-teen days, when an uncle gave him Richard Halliburton s Book of Marvels, long before he even knew what a bucket list was. As many of you know, Judy and Jim have had a long history of offshore and coastal sailing over the years, including Bermuda, Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean islands as far south as Venezuela. 3 From the Commander: Darryl Aubrey, SN We had a very good turnout for our February dinner meeting at the North Palm Beach Country Club with 54 members and guests in attendance. Our speakers, Julie Houston Trieste, a public relations specialist for the Port of Palm Beach, and Aaron Hoffman of the Port of Palm Beach Mariners Mission Harbor of Hope, gave excellent and enlightening presentations. Ms. Houston Trieste discussed the scope of activities at the Port and upcoming changes, Mr. Hoffman spoke about the origin and mission of the Harbor of Hope. We also introduced and pledged two new members - Loretta and Brian Darrow. Welcome! If you have not recently attended our dinner meetings, please consider giving them a try. You will enjoy the fellowship of your fellow members and a great meal. We dodged the threat of rain at our Founders Day picnic at Anchorage Park. Thanks to North Palm Beach for allowing us to celebrate our national organization s 100th anniversary at a beautiful venue. Forty-five members and guests enjoyed a great selection of food and desserts, followed by an auction of miscellaneous treasures and discards. We appreciate the efforts of Bryan Moskowitz and Bob Smith, who slaved over the grill performing chef duties. And thanks to all of you who brought food and desserts and to Arlene and her helpers for serving up the food. Special thanks also to Rick Wood who did his usual excellent and entertaining job as auctioneer. It is not too early to mark your calendars and make plans to attend the District 8 conference in Boca Raton from 2 to 4 May. This is a very special meeting for our Squadron because our own P/C Mary Dodd, SN, will be sworn in as District 8 Commander in the Change of Watch Ceremony. We are proud of Mary and want to be out in force when she receives this honor. At the last Bridge and Board meeting we approved the dues structure for the coming year. As you may know, your dues bill includes dues for our squadron, District 8 and National. 11 Boating Safety PROPULSION Lt Edwin Hoover, AP, Safety Officer Boating propulsion systems consist of the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and propeller. There is an array of choices among systems. Most common in smaller boats are outboards, inboard/outboard (I/Os), and jet drives. Larger boats are typically inboards and, with growing popularity, pod drives. OUTBOARDS Outboards are self-contained propulsion systems with the engine, drive components and propeller in one unit that is mounted to the transom. Safety Concerns All outboard boats have a certificate of compliance plate that specifies the maximum horsepower of the engine(s). Exceeding the maximum permitted horsepower is illegal and creates an unsafe condition both because of the engine s weight, which affects the structural integrity of the transom, and because of the negative effect on the maneuverability and handling of the boat. Overpowering an outboard boat likely voids insurance coverage. Skiers and wake boarders have all too frequently been seriously injured by the propeller of a tow boat. Many of these injuries can be avoided by simply turning the stern away from someone you are retrieving from the water. Remember, even if the transmission is in neutral, the propeller may still be rotating from residual friction. The only guarantee against prop injuries is to shut the motor off. INBOARD/OUTBOARDS Often called stern drives, inboard/outboard propulsion systems (I/Os) feature a drive shaft that runs from the engine through the transom to the lower unit that houses the transmission and propeller. Safety Concerns The flexible rubber bellows that covers the shaft connecting the engine to the lower unit is highly vulnerable to deterioration from water and sun. When it cracks and fails water has free access into the boat. Inspect the bellows regularly for wear and possible replacement. The typical I/O gasoline engine is equipped with a spark/flame arrestor on top of the engine that looks like an air cleaner. The arrestor prevents an explosion caused by an engine backfiring. Oil residue builds up on the arrestor so it should be cleaned annually. Never use automotive replacement parts on a marine engine. They are neither spark protected, nor built for marine use. JET DRIVES Most often used in personal watercraft, jet drives push and steer a boat with a jet of water produced by an impeller pump that draws water from beneath the hull and passes it out a moveable nozzle. Safety Concerns All personal watercraft are equipped with a safety lanyard that must be attached to the operator so that, in the event of an accidental ejection from the boat, the engine will be shut off. Always use it. Jet propulsion systems intake and expel water at a Honey Fitz during major overhaul. August 2010 high velocity. The intake ports should be kept clear of debris and away from body parts like arms and legs. The same safety protocol is used with jet-powered boats as with I/Os. After fueling, run blowers, if so equipped, and open the engine hatch for a smell test to detect any gasoline fumes. Fuel hoses and fittings can be loosened or damaged by vibration. Check them frequently. Jet skis are boats subject to the same federal and state safety requirements. In addition, they may not be operated at night. Remember, a jet ski cannot be steered unless it is producing a jet of water. INBOARD DRIVES An inboard system consists of a marine engine and transmission inside the boat and a shaft connected to the propeller underneath the boat. A shaft seal allows the shaft to turn but prevents water from entering where it exits the hull. A V-drive system allows the engine to be placed closer to the stern of the boat compared with a standard straight shaft. Safety Concerns The shaft seal is located at the shaft log of the boat hull where the shaft goes through. It is the only thing that prevents water from entering the boat at a catastrophic rate. Shaft seals, whether the older packing style or newer dripless style, must be inspected regularly for wear and deterioration. Also make sure the raw water supply that cools and lubricates the dripless seal is not plugged up. Adjusting or replacing the seal is a job for an experienced mechanic. The safe fueling protocol, discussed in an earlier article, must always be followed. POD DRIVES A Pod Drive, so called because the propeller unit under the boat resembles a pod, consists of an inboard engine and transmission directly above and connected to the propeller unit under the boat. The Volvo/Penta version has dual propellers facing forward while the Mercruiser Cummins version has them facing aft. Safety Concerns These are very complicated systems that must be maintained properly. The propulsion system relies on high pressure hydraulic components and computer systems all of which are subject to environmental and electrical effects, which can render them inoperative. Pods are designed to shear off without compromising the hull in the event of catastrophic grounding. Nevertheless, the prudent captain will always be alert to potential grounding situations or debris just under the surface. APRIL 2014 PAGE 11
