1 Saturday May 20 th Sunday May 21 st, 2017 Welland South Course South Niagara Rowing Club High School Invitational Rowing Regatta The SNRC Regatta: Spans 2 days Has grown to be one of the largest high school regattas in Canada. The event draws approximately 1500 athletes each year from both Canada and the United States. The Course Layout This course is very different from the course last week at Henley Island. In Welland, boats are launched at the boat club, athletes row about 1k to the finish, then row up alongside of the course to the marshalling area. Once prepared to start, boats race the course and return to the launch. The race course finish line is at the official s tower just south of Forks Road. So for each 2 km race, each athlete is actually rowing about 6 kms. Hot Seating At times races are closer in time than what following this pattern will allow, so some athletes will need to hot seat. The hot seat dock is located between the rail bridge and Forks Road. Picking up athletes from this dock saves time. This also requires a tremendous amount of planning from the coach and precise time management from the athlete. Athletes will be told if hot seating is required of them.

2 So How Do I Get to this Regatta? South Course of the WIFC & Boathouse Please use the following map and directions to find your most direct route to the Club s South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre (the WIFC) and Club Boathouse. For those taking HWY 406 Take Hwy 406 to the end and turn right (West) on to Main Street East Cross the bridge over the canal, turn left (South) on to Prince Charles Drive Follow Prince Charles Drive and turn right (West) on to Forks Road Exit Forks Road Exit loops around to Forks Road Turn right on to Forks Road and turn left on to Colbourne St (just before bridge) Athlete Drop Off and Parking Once you arrive, you will drop your athlete off by turning north off Forks Road. Athletes will meet at the trailer (Remember ID)! There is a premium parking just south of Forks Road at the official s tower. Alternately, you can park in the overflow lots just north of Forks Road. There is a cash fee for parking. It s either $5 or $10/per car. For those taking HWY 20 through Smithville and Wellandport Turn off HWY 27 on to Broadway turn right on to Prince Charles drive Follow Prince Charles Drive and turn right (West) on to Forks Road Exit Forks Road Exit loops around to Forks Road Turn right on to Forks Road and turn left on to Colbourne St (just before bridge)

3 Sun, Shelter and Hydration There is not a lot of refuge from the direct sun at this regatta. Athletes are generally down at the trailer (at the launch site) for a good portion of the day. Parents are at the finish (about 1km up the canal) watching the races. Therefore having a conversation with your athlete about staying in the shade, off their feet, wearing hats/sunscreen and keeping well hydrated beforehand is going to be of utmost importance for their performance, but more importantly, for their safety. If you have a shelter to share with the athletes, please set it up in the area of the trailers, (coaches will advise exact location so as to not impede regatta flow, but generally these get put up behind the foot path on the other side of the boat house parking lot). There will be at a couple of tents at the finish, (close to the official s tower) If you have an additional tent and feel like sharing, please do! Because of the physical separation between athletes and parents at this regatta, having a plan about food and water in-take will be ideal..and speaking of water Water At this regatta there are portable restrooms only and no running water. In the past, there has been a water truck dispensing water for the athletes at the launch, but I think it is prudent to come prepared as though there wasn t one.just in case. So bring LOTS of water!

4 Been there..done that. The port a potties are fresh and well stocked on SATURDAY and yet, this is a 2 day regatta. By Sunday, things look a little different in the port a potty scene, so why not come with your own Charmin and hand sanitizer enough said? Bicycle..bicycle..I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike. Who says this isn t a spectator sport? Want to watch the whole race start to finish? Well, bring your bikes! There are bike paths that will allow you to cycle up to the start and actually bike the length of the race course alongside your athlete s boat. It s a unique vantage to somewhat experience how long and quiet the first 1000 meters are. Having your bike will also allow you to easily head to the trailer, see some of the action and take some pictures from the launch perspective as well.

5 No Bike?...No Problem! There are volunteers operating golf carts to transport people between the finish and the launch. Bare in mind for athletes, that time is of the essence. Athletes, plan your trips up to your parents wisely in terms of balancing the visit against meeting the coaches timing expectations around race plans, while also making sure that you have appropriately fueled your body. Don t Be that Guy. bring your ID card! This regatta requires that all athletes present ID. The ID card is shown to an official before each event. The coaches gather the ID and return it after the race. At this regatta, no ID means no racing. So please check before you leave Hamilton. Every year there is an emergency return trip. I think this year will be the one that everyone remembers! You too can have a draw sheet! Go to: From the top tool bar, select Regattas, narrow the location, once at High School Invitational Regatta hosted by the SNRC, select draw sheets from the side bar and print away. The preliminary draw is not yet up!
