4 About Us OCCSAILING.COM 4 The Marine Program at Orange Coast College is one of the nation s largest non-profit public boating education institutions. Founded in 1960, this comprehensive program offers a wide variety of nautical learning experiences in the classroom and on the water. We are dedicated to providing all community members with access to high quality, low cost sailing and seamanship education. The School of Sailing & Seamanship is a fee-based, self supporting non-credit community program which offers dozens of classroom and on the water courses for youth and adults. The School operates more than three dozen sailing and power vessels, ranging from 14 to 92 feet. The School operates year-round, seven days a week, with the majority of courses held on evenings and weekends. Courses range from Beginning Sailing through Ocean Voyaging and powerboat training. The average yearly enrollment is 1,500. The Coast Guard Licensing program offers professional level classes in Coast Guard License Preparation, Radar Observer and Basic Safety Training. Nordic Star was donated to the OCC Foundation in 2010 and operates as a training vessel for students in the Professional Mariner Program as well as a private charter yacht on Newport Harbor and at Catalina Island. The Professional Mariner Program at Orange Coast College is a 19-unit credit vocational program, designed for college students interested in careers in the maritime industry. The courses in this program are offered during the school year through the OCC Consumer Health Sciences division. Credit Sailing Courses are offered during the school year through the Kinesiology Department. Beginning and Intermediate classes are held on weekdays. Donations - The majority of vessels in the program are gifts from private individuals. Maintenance of the program s vessels and facilities are almost exclusively funded through fees, grants, and private giving. This unique community program is thankful to its partners including all students, California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways, the County of Orange, the Coast Community College District, Orange Coast College, many non-profit family foundations, and corporate and private donors. Course topics for this extensive sailing course include tacking, jibing, crew coordination, navigation rules, basic chart reading, sail theory, docking, anchoring, reefing, heaving to, and crew overboard recovery. Your active participation at home, in the classroom and on the water is essential for success. A passing grade on both the written and the practical test is required for certification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive your US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification and be ready to move on to Basic Cruising 1. Min 4/Max 9 students. 14 Coastal Cruising OCCSAILING.COM Prerequisite: Basic Cruising 1 or equivalent Discover the world of cruising aboard our Catalina 42 Betty. Your weekend starts off with an overview of safety gear and procedures. You will then get underway and experience a full day of sailing. Along the way, this course answers the practical questions you have about navigating your way to Catalina. After arriving at Catalina you will anchor near Emerald Bay for the evening. Saturday will be spent setting bow and stern anchors at Little Fisherman before working our way down east and anchoring in four or five coves underway for a tour of the best north side anchorages. Sunday we will navigate our way home to Newport. Crew members participate in all aspects of boat handling including steering, navigation, sail handling, log keeping, anchoring, and cleanup. Experience is the real teacher when it comes to navigation and anchoring. For many new cruisers the primary concern is having to anchor once they arrive at Catalina if no moorings are available. This course will make solving that problem an interesting and satisfying experience and serves as the gateway to self-reliance and an excellent preparation for Bareboat Cruising Certification. On board subjects include deck operations, fire-fighting, crew overboard recovery and abandon ship procedures. Command/bridge topics include bridge management, piloting, navigation, Radar, navigation plotters, radios, and GPS. Engine room subjects include engine monitoring and control, fuel and water management, engine room safety, electrical distribution, pumps, motors, and bilge systems. On weekends and evenings, Nordic Star is available to individuals and groups for private charter. A US Coast Guard inspected vessel, Nordic Star can carry up to 50 guests in the harbor and in local offshore waters. She is an ideal yacht for meetings and celebrations while cruising Newport Harbor or down the coast to Laguna. With her luxurious cabins, she is exceptional for overnight cruises to Catalina Island or beyond. Charterers have great flexibility to design their own voyages, choosing dates, locations, level of service, and activities. Nordic Star s crew normally includes a captain, 1st mate, steward or stewardess, and a cook. Quite often, students from OCC s professional mariner program are integrated into the crew. Donated to the OCC Foundation in 2010 by the Jerrell Barto family of Newport Beach, Nordic Star s maintenance and operation is supported solely by charter income, in-kind gifts, and grants. For the past five years, most of Nordic Star s capital improvements have been provided by the Harriet E. Pfleger Foundation. Visit or contact us at for more information about Nordic Star and the Professional Mariner Program.
