1 38 years SOS, Inc SOS, Inc Awards, Awards, Awards! January 2016, Vol. 38, No. 1 Spring Training March 12, 2016 At the January 23 Awards Dinner Dance, SOS will recognize four members for their significant contributions of time, energy and talent (the serious member recognition awards) to our all-volunteer Club. Members will also be recognized for contributing whimsical, goodnatured humor through their foibles, bloopers, and flim flams (the Jibe Ho awards). The photographers among us will also be recognized, and there are awards for various categories, such as boats, sunrises/sunsets, and people. So, What Are The Serious Awards? Commodore s Award: The Board of Directors established the annual Commodore s award so that the highest ranking officer of the Club could extend public recognition and many thanks to an individual who has made significant contributions in fostering the goals of Singles on Sailboats, and who continues to contribute to many aspects of the Club. Nominations for the award are accepted from the general membership. Ed Klein Member of the Year Award: Singles on Sailboats owes its beginnings to Ed Klein. He cosponsored the first rafts of two or three boats, the first brunches, the first social gatherings. But Ed offered more. He would teach you to sail without regard for your past experience or future expectations. Ed would take you aboard his boat, The Mai Kai, give you the helm, and develop your skills. He would challenge you to extend your horizons. He was one of those unique individuals who shared his joy of sailing with you. Ed sailed beyond this world in Nominations for the award come from the general membership. Elinor W. Elli Abramson Award for Contributions to SOS Education Programs: Eli Abramson created many new educational programs for the members of Singles on Sailboats. After serving on the Board of Directors for two years, she (continued on page 14) December might have been usually warm prompting some of us to venture out on our boats, but rest assured old man winter is going to have a shot or two at us! And while he is packing his bags to go back to the North Pole do we have something special for you!!! On Saturday, March 12 th at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD SOS conducts its annual SPRING TRAINING event. This is a sailapalooza event to mark the end of winter and celebrate the coming sailing season. We take over several buildings at the college for a day of multiple seminars on scores of subjects including boat handling, all manner of boat and systems maintenance, weather forecasting, safety, the latest boating apps, navigation, marine cuisine, and, of course, sailing. Last season, over 250 sailors from the area attended. This year s program is new and different and has exciting and informative sessions of all levels of sailors from novices/new members to the most salty of the old salts! SOS Spring Training is unique among sailing educational events in that you get to tailor your program to meet your own needs and sailing skills. You will gain valuable knowledge that will be putting into practice come April and beyond! The cost is $55 for members of SOS and $75 for nonmembers. This fee includes course materials, morning coffee, and buffet lunch. Program details and online registration information are available in this issue of the ALL WET!. Sign up as early as possible because the most popular classes fill up quickly. And don t be left out in the cold!!!!. Singles on Sailboats, Inc Facebook:

2 2 Whisker Pole January 2016 VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE Welcome to SOS s 38 th year! The active SOS 2016 schedule starts with the annual Winter Skipper s lunch and meeting on Saturday, January 9 th, in Annapolis. Invitations have gone out to skippers and I hope to see you there. Later in the month is the Winter Wonderland weekend in Annapolis. The Awards Dinner Dance on Saturday will feature awards, both significant and funny to your fellow members, followed by dancing to Kaleidoscope, the great band that played at last year s Seafood Feast. The next morning is brunch with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation s senior naturalist John Page Williams speaking about Captain John Smith s exploration of the Chesapeake Bay. Sign up for the weekend. See the Fleet Exercises for details of Fireside Chats in several areas during the month. Awards! Awards! Awards! You have just a few more days to make suggestions for this year s awards. This is the time to recommend someone who has done a lot for SOS and hasn t received recognition. See page 1 for more details. Send your suggestions to Laura Gwinn at bodgwinn@gmail.com. The schedule for the 2016 edition of Spring Training Day is in the middle of this Whisker Pole. It s a whole day to learn something new. Choose from 36 topics on a variety of sailing subjects. Plan to attend on Saturday, March 12 in Annapolis. Kudos to our many holiday dinner hosts, who provide us with a special opportunity to celebrate the holidays. The Regional Thanksgiving Dinners hosts this year were: Charlotte O Conor, Barbara Wise, Bob Lucas, Meeps Yox, Suzanne Vaughn, Kathy Higdon and Debbie Goldberg. In addition, Henrietta Hyatt-Knorr and Larry Garthe, with Debbie Goldberg as coordinator, opened their home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day dinners, and Barbara Mistrik entertained another group of SOSers for Christmas Dinner. The sad burning of Annapolis Yacht Club caused the cancellation of the Annapolis Light Parade, but the party went on. Kudos to Marge Stembel, Joe Lombardo, Barbara Shoemaker, Flavia Flavali and Rita Svec for another festive party. SOS has several unofficial functions, which still necessitate member coordinators. A big holiday thank you to all the Happy Hour Coordinators: Pattie Evans, Charlotte O Conor, Jill Montgomery, Bob Morrow, Barb O Brien, Geri Walker, Darlene Frieman, Jim Randall and Ron Pence. Happy Hours are a time to welcome new members and catch up with sailing buddies. Thank you to two more behind the scenes coordinators: Steve Deller is the list mom for the singlesonsailboats@yahoogroups.com notices and Emil Becker administers the SOS Facebook site. 8 8 Whisker Pole January 2016 RESOLVE TO GET INVOLVED By Laura Gwinn, Vice Commodore This year, make a resolution that not only benefits you, but will benefit others: Resolve to Get Involved with SOS! SOS operates through volunteers who dedicate their time and skills. For example, when Skipper George Hollendursky calls to invite you to sail with him, he had received a call earlier from a coordinator or a coordinator helper, maybe Barb Peterson who suggested crew to invite. When you go to Spring Training and get those nice envelopes with your class schedule and other goodies they were assembled by a group of folks who spent an evening together stuffing those envelopes, probably with a glass of wine; it may have been Jean Gough or Kris Smith along with 6 or 8 others. Fireside chats are all organized by volunteers: members who open their homes to you like Anne Bastian or Jon Bernheimer. Social functions need bartenders (of sorts) and people to set up and break down. Benefits of volunteering: increase your longevity by being social! (seriously, lots of studies show that strong social networks result in a happier and longer life) make new friends and enjoy a meal on SOS (many committee meetings include a light meal, maybe pizza or sandwiches) give back to an organization that gives so much to you There are many volunteer opportunities available, and maybe you have thought about getting involved, but didn t know how. The solution is here: Volunteer Corner. Each month, we will have a section of the newsletter devoted to volunteer opportunities--some big, some small. Here are some upcoming opportunities: CRUISING: Cruising chair needed: this is a big job, and needs someone who is organized and can be committed for a year. But, you won t be alone--there are lots of people to help you with this. If interested, contact Laura Gwinn at bodgwinn@gmail.com Weekend Cruising and Day Sail coordinators, trainees, and helpers needed to coordinate crew and boats. This is a one-time commitment for a particular date, but also requires a few hours leading up to the coordination date, and sometime after. Contact the regional coordinator for your area (I would love to have a Philadelphia area regional coordinator to see if we could do a coordination or two up there To volunteer contact: Philadelphia area: Laura Gwinn bodgwinn@gmail.com). Annapolis area: Peggy Green mbradpete@gmail.com or Ellen Penndorf aespenndorf@aol.com Northern Virginia: Linda Casucci: casuccilj@gmail.com Montgomery/Howard County: Barbara Wise: bwise@americanoffice.com Weekend Day Sail Coordinator (commit for the whole season, coordinate the coordinators!) and individual coordinators: contact Laura Gwinn at bodgwinn@gmail.com BRUNCHES: Host/hostesses needed for the February 14th "regional" brunches. Everyone brings a dish to pass; you provide the dwelling, paper products and perhaps some "bubbly". Guests contribute $10 each to cover your costs. We have volunteers for locations in Annapolis and Severna Park, but still need locations in PA, VA, DC. Please contact Carole Jordan if you are interested and willing: seajay281@comcast.net. GENERAL: Name Tag Guru: work with coordinators to obtain names of attendees for functions and then use mail merge in Word (or similar software) to create nametags. It would help if you lived in Annapolis area, so that printing (SOS will reimburse for materials) & delivering of nametags is easier, but don t let that stop you; something can be worked out. If you have the desire and the creative knack contact Rita Svec at ritasvec@hotmail.com. We ask that all registrants read the instructions below before calling with questions. Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after deadline (see below). Included in the cost is a $5.00 nonrefundable fee in the event that Spring Training is cancelled for any reason, including weather. See snow emergency instructions on page 9. Registration for specific classes is limited. SOS reserves the right to adjust the class schedule to meet demand for key classes. Upon arrival, check in at the registration desk and pick up your class materials. Please be prompt and courteous; speakers are volunteers as are all the administrative staff. Morning coffee and a buffet lunch are included in the cost of registration. Please note, however, that no food or drink is allowed outside the cafeteria. To register online: We encourage online registration. Go to the website, and you will find a section for Spring Training. You will see something similar to the paper registration form, also published in the Whisker Pole. Please note that you can only use a credit card online; we cannot process checks online. If you do not wish to use a credit card, you can register by mail with a check. See below. Cost: $55.00 Member, $75.00 Nonmember and all after the March 7 th deadline. Choose the courses you would like to attend by clicking on the drop-down menu. If a course you select is full, it will not appear on the menu. This is one of the advantages of registering online. You will know your schedule when you register. Please note, however, that last-minute changes are possible due to circumstances beyond our control, so be sure to check-in at registration for your materials. Cancellations must be received via phone or no later than March 7 th. To register by mail: If you wish to register by mail, fill in the registration form included in this issue of the Whisker Pole. Use a zero if you do not have a second or third choice, or if you do not wish to attend anything during that session. 16 16 Whisker Pole January 2016 Education Seminars Get Ready for Sailing By Kris Smith, Seminar Chair Training in CPR/AED and First Aid for Mariners Saturday, January 23rd SOS encourages you to maintain your training in CPR, in the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and in first aid. Here s your opportunity to learn the techniques for the first time or to recertify. In recognition of the importance of this training, SOS will pay half the cost. Emergency medical personnel will conduct the training at the Annapolis Fire Department, 620 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, MD TEL: Your cost is $30.00, and the class size is limited to 30 people. Lunch will be on your own at nearby markets and restaurants. The deadline looms..please pay attention to the January 12 th deadline so at least 1 trainer for every 8 people can be scheduled. Raft Captains Seminar Saturday, March 19 th Rafting is an important aspect of SOS cruising and doing it safely is critical. Learn how SOS builds linear and circle rafts including where and how to set an anchor, place fenders, secure lines, approach in the wind, and effectively communicate both on the boat and with the Raft Captain. This seminar is designed for Raft Captains, potential Raft Captains, Skippers, First Mates, and all Crewmembers. The session covers considerations involved in raft building such as advance planning, general guidelines for all rafts, special considerations for circle and linear rafts, handling emergencies, docking for land-based cruises, and ways in which Skippers and Crew can assist the rafting process. What are the responsibilities of the Raft Captain and individual Skippers? How does weather affect raft building? How do we determine how many anchors to set, and where to set them? How do we calculate the amount of space needed for a circle or linear raft? When do we build a linear raft or a circle raft? How much anchor rode should we use, and why? What happens when the wind shifts while a raft is being built? What is the effect of current? Or boat wakes? How can the size of a raft be adjusted for more or fewer boats? Is breaking up really hard to do? What are the emergencies that can occur in a raft, and what should we do? The March seminar will be held at the Southern District Police Station, 35 Stepney s Lane, Edgewater, MD TEL: There is no cost for Raft Captains, potential Raft Captains, First Mates and First Mate Candidates. See Fleet Exercises and Shore Leave for the cost for crew members. Really, Really Easy Applesauce Ingredients A Tip from our Galley Gourmet 3 lbs apples cups water 1 tsp cinnamon 2 thin lemon slices 1 pinch nutmeg 1 4 tsp salt Preparation 1. Peel and core apples (I prefer to leave the skin on a few of them because I like the taste and texture). Cut apples into approximately 1 inch cubes. 2. Add all ingredients to pot, and turn heat on high. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 20 minutes or until the apples have softened significantly. 3. Stir frequently, making sure that the apples are not sticking to the bottom of the pot. Add more water if necessary. Remove lemon slices. 4. Mash with a potato masher or use a food mill for a smoother consistency. Serve warm or at room temperature
