2 2 Whisker Pole July 2016 VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE Gosh, it s exciting to be a part of such a dynamic organization as SOS. Many kudos to the Leukemia Cup Team SOS. With the fundraising impetus provided by Dennis Krizek, Jack LaMay and Shirley & George Hollendursky, members attended a pot luck fund-raising dinner, participated in raffles, and urged friends to donate resulting in raising almost $ the largest amount from a non-yacht club team. Special recognition goes to Harry Keith (S/V Rantum Scoot), Dennis Krizek (S/V Sea Tango) and George Hollendursky (S/V Sail Away), who raced and won line honors, in addition to 1st and 3rd place. An outstanding performance and a great way to become more active and gain recognition in the Annapolis sailing community! Stay tuned for another effort as part of the September 17 th Hospice Cup Regatta. Skippers, sign up to sail and recruit your crew now! Please help make new members, as well as skippers, welcome in SOS. Many of you probably don t remember how awkward it was to get involved and feel a part of the group! Everyone seems to have belonged for years, knows everyone, and knows a lot about sailing. Reach out to our great new members! Call the new member who sailed with you last weekend and ask them to meet you at Happy Hour or a BBQ Chat. Phone calls are most effective. The Membership Committee is developing the mentor-a-new sailor program, contact Linda Casucci or Ellie Kallins to become a new member mentor. Board Members are regularly asked, If the weather is bad, why isn t the party/function cancelled and refunds issued? All functions in SOS are budgeted to at least break even and to be supported by the attendees. Dues only cover basic operating expenses, such as the printing the Directory and renting the storage locker. By the sign-up deadline, SOS is already committed to pay for the facility, rental tables and chairs, the band and the caterer. Cancelling a few days before the function does not relive the club of those financial obligations. So far this year if SOS had cancelled functions, the club budget would be over $13,000 in deficit. Aeolus, the weather god, has not been kind to SOS so far this season. Despite the rain and cold, the DNR party featured good food and great dancing. Once again, SOS volunteers rose to the occasion and at the last minute arranged for a tent and a fun time was had by all. Thank you to Bob Lucas and the other members of the Social Committee for ensuring a special party. Volunteer to run for the Board! Call Kathy Higdon, Cindy Turner or Kitty St. Romain. Go sailing! 14 14 Whisker Pole July 2016 Milestones and Celebrations Congratulations to Lois Morris and Rick Morefield on their recent engagement another couple who met in SOS! And Lois also retired this spring, so she is one happy lady. A Song Writer in our Membership Robin Meigel returned her Cape Dory 27, s/v Pacem, to Annapolis in June. She has spent the last 18 months in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Pacem was returning before the Coast Guard mandates that the hailing port on her transom be changed to "Friends' Docks, USA." Robin composed this ditty to the tune of Willie Nelson's "All the Girls I Loved Before": The Northern Neck is Beautiful To all the docks I ve loved before Through weather fair and poor I m glad they came along I dedicate this song To all the docks I ve loved before To all my friends with docks now free Thanks for your generosity Pacem was so safe She rode thru floods no chafe At all the docks I ve loved before The winds of change are always blowing And every time I try to stay The winds of change continue blowing And they just carry me away The Northern Neck is beautiful My friends are great, my heart is full The season now begun A new year full of fun Waits in my northern latitude To all the docks I ve loved before Which Pacem graced with Dory style New skippers too will smile As guests for a short while At all the docks I ve loved before You can complete Basic Skills on a weekend cruise. Sometimes it is not convenient to schedule a couple of Day Sails when you are trying to work on your Basic Skills. Instead you can sign up for a Weekend Cruise just be sure to note you have not yet completed Basic Skills. The coordinator will find a skipper to work with you and you might complete all of them on one weekend! A skipper asks you to wear a lifejacket. This doesn t mean he or she questions your swimming abilities; it means they are carefully considering your safety. Trust your skipper s hunches, and put it on. A skipper asks you to be quiet. Have you ever tried to perform a tricky parallel parking or a lane-changing maneuver with someone yapping in your ear? It s equally distracting on a boat. When a skipper asks for quiet, respect the request. Leaving and returning to a dock and certain on-the-water maneuvers require concentration. Quiet crew members who are ready to listen and jump into action, keep the tension level down on a boat. The 2016 Nominating Committee comprised of Kathy Higdon, Cindy Turner, and Kitty St. Romain is seeking to fill a slate of well-qualified and inspired members to serve as SOS Board Members. In September, four members will be elected to the Board of Directors for 2- year terms. Are you capable of providing positive leadership, guidance, training, and appreciation to Committee Chairs and other volunteers? If you feel that you are ready, willing, and able to bring your energy and talents to help provide leadership to SOS, or would care to nominate another, please contact a member of the Nominating Committee as soon as possible. In addition, any eligible member may be nominated and seconded from the floor of the Town Hall Meeting on August 13th, and if they accept that nomination will appear on the September election ballot.

15 July 2016 Whisker Pole 15 New Member Dockside Training Saturday, July 23 Recently joined SOS? Sailing skills rusty? Need a review or refresher of those essential sailing skills or the names of those what-cha-ma-call-its on the boat? SOS has a special day for you and it is a lot of fun! Dockside Training is an all-day event held after the Flare Demo. Sign up and you will be assigned to an SOS Skipper s Boat. Come with your lunch and beverages and Basic Skills forms. AND BRING THOSE QUESTIONS!!! The SOS Skipper and SOS First Mate will acquaint you with the details of SOS sailing; how to sign up for an SOS cruise, what to wear and bring, the names of all that stuff on the boat and what it is used for, and the basics of sailing. You may also learn and practice to tie a knot or two. In short, many things you need to know to participate as SOS crew on a day sail or a weekend cruise. You will be able to complete most of the Level I checkout requirements during the day. The Basic Skills Program and Check Out sheets (2015) can be found on the SOS website under Forms and Such, then Education. (You must be logged in to view these.) And when the sun starts setting and the air gets chilly, you will do what sailors always do; socialize at a local Annapolis watering hole where all the Dockside Training crews and skippers, along with any local members, will gather for food and libation. The Coordinator will contact you by or phone regarding your boat/skipper assignment. Note: there may be a limited number of boats for this popular event.
