1 37 years SOS, Inc SOS, Inc Town Hall Meeting!!! August 8 th Harry Keith, Vice Commodore August 2015, Vol. 37, No. 8 Save the Date! October 31 SOS Hallowe en Party Miles River Yacht Club Wendy Adams, Event Manager The summer SOS General Membership Meeting is just around the corner Saturday, August 8. Mark your calendars and plan to attend after all, it s free to members. At the meeting, the Nominating Committee will announce the names of candidates who have stepped forward to run for the Board of Directors. Come out and meet the nominees and hear what they have to say. This year there are no bylaw changes or committee reports, which will allow more time for socializing, eating, drinking and camaraderie. You may choose to drive or sail (arrange your own crew and slip, or dinghy ashore) to the Galesville Memorial Hall, 952 Main St. (between the Post Office and the Fire House), Galesville, MD. (See page 9 for driving directions.) Drinks and dinner for all attendees will be provided with compliments of SOS as long as you register by the deadline (Mail: July 31; Online: August 4). Remember, you must RSVP by the deadline to be included as a dinner guest. Plan to sail, drive, or grab your broomstick and fly in to SOS s Hallowe en Party in the Commodore s Room at the lovely Miles River Yacht Club in St. Michaels. Ghosts, goblins, pirates, and black cats will enjoy a bar opening at 6:00, and a delicious seasonal buffet and Hallowe en desserts from 6:30 to 7:30, to the strains of mingling music played by popular Three Penny Opera. At 7:30 the band jumps things up and we dance! Look for more information on the party and accompanying cruise in upcoming issues of the Whisker Pole. Registration information will be placed on the SOS Event Calendar. Non-members may come to the dinner for $25.00 per person, but will be asked to leave during the meeting. 2 2 Whisker Pole August 2015 VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE I hope that you are taking advantage of the opportunities to sail this summer. Despite the weather forecasts, the sailing has been quite pleasurable. July 4 th weekend turned into a great weekend with fireworks in Rock Hall on Friday evening and then more fireworks in 360 degrees viewed from the Magothy River on Saturday. Despite the heat July (Christmas in July Cruise), the wind was great on Saturday and raft-up fun was had with Xmas grab bag gifts and ice cream. August sailing can be great! Other club members will be sailing in Maine this month, either on the schooner Victory Chimes or on a bareboat. Several club skippers are taking their boats to Maine and will join the bareboat portion of the sail. The Seafood Feast is August 1-2 so hurry and sign-up. I encourage everyone to attend the Town Hall meeting in Galesville, MD., on Saturday, August 8 th. This is your opportunity to hear the candidates for the Board of Directors speak and it s a free dinner! Sign-up now via the Event Calendar. New Members! Contrary to popular belief, you do NOT have to have completed Basic Skills I in order to sign up to sail on a weekend cruise. While you are encouraged to complete Basic Skills I on a day sail or at a dockside training day, it can also be accomplished on a weekend sail. Just request a Basic Skills checkout on your registration form and by the end of a weekend cruise you will have completed it! Also two BBQ Chats, which provide an opportunity to meet existing members, learn how to get involved with SOS and ask questions, are scheduled for August. One is in Rockville, MD, and the other is in suburban Baltimore. First Mates Renewal Reminder! If you have been a First Mate for five years or more, you need to take your renewal sail this season. It s free and it counts as your volunteer requirement for the year. Contact John Parsons, Safety Chair, to get yours scheduled. A number of First Mates have already completed theirs. In addition to sailing and partying, SOS has BBQ Chats during the summer. Thank you to the hosts, Nancy and John Parsons, and the coordinator, Meeps Yox, for a BBQ in Annapolis; and in McLean, VA, kudos are in order Irene Aronian for opening her home for more than 30 guests and to Kady Condello for coordinating the get together. Many accolades go to Joe Lombardo and Dane Skagen for continuing to work on establishing some casual racing for SOS.,Hope See you on the water WHISKER POLE NEWSLETTER Published Monthly Singles on Sailboats, Inc. 8 8 Whisker Pole August 2015 By Carol Coltharp Travel and Adventure In June Zonia Acton went to Norway, spending time in Bergen and cruising on a Hurtigruten Ship, the Kong Harald. Hurtigruten ships are for passengers, cargo, and also serve as ferries, stopping in 34 ports. The cruise is named "The World's Most Beautiful Voyage." The scenery is beautiful cruising among the fjords. She went to the northern part of Norway and back, experiencing the midnight sun. At this time of the year the sun never sets above the Zonia at North Cape, Arctic Circle. It just goes the northernmost point down to the horizon but not below and starts to rise again. Adventures in Anchoring In mid June, Carol and Craig Coltharp took their two cats and sailed (well, motored actually) to the Choptank. The first night they went to Baby Owl Cove. Beautiful evening, only three other boats in the cove. They went deep into the cove and lowered their 55 lb. Rocna anchor. For the first time ever, it would not set. They pulled it up half way and went out past another sailboat and tried again. No luck. The owner of the other boat actually offered to raft to him, if the anchor would not set. After the third attempt to set the anchor, Craig pulled it up all the way. To his surprise, there was a 30 gallon, brown trash bag, about half full of trash attached to the point of the anchor. The guy in other boat started to laugh. Needless to say, the fourth attempt worked just fine. The lesson learned is: If the anchor doesn t set, pull it all the way up and take a look Other News Ex-SOS skipper Wolfgang Reuter died on May 31 this year.
