1 Commodore: Karl Quade Vice Commodore: Chuck Fisher Secretary: Chuck Silver December 2009 Commodore s Log Karl Quade, Commodore The work parties are over until next spring. Most of what we wanted to do has been accomplished and we should be able to finish the shower early in the spring. The inside is done and looks great thanks to Mike Salituro and Chuck Stuckey. All that is left is to hook up the water and sewer. If you still need work hours, the deadline is December 10. We are in the dredge season now. Fred Whitfield says we don t have much to do, but it has been going a little slower than expected. The equipment has been working fine for the most part, but the sand has been quite hard. Steve Barrett has received the okay to do the clamshell dredging around the shore-side outer corner of Walk 1. Tom Stringfield will be scheduling that soon. Next year we have to renew our dredge permit, and Steve is already working on that since it will be a long process. We had a good turnout and a break in the weather for the Walk 5 BBQ. The auction was fun, and several people scored some pretty good deals. The auction raised $311, which will go towards our new folding chairs. Don Belshaw and Ron Moran did a great job modifying the carts for the chairs. The Christmas Ships potluck is next on the social calendar. Hope to see you there. The year is rapidly coming to an end. I hope that all of you enjoy the holiday festivities that are just around the corner. For the most part, I enjoyed serving as your Commodore but I m ready to pass the helm to Chuck Fisher. It looks like you will have an excellent Board for Thanks to all of you for your support throughout the year, especially those who served as board members or committee chairs. Walk 5 Bar BQ and Auction Holiday Special at Ships Stores If you need another excuse to come to the December meeting, come to take advantage of the Ships Stores sale! Everything will be on sale, and I mean EVERTHING, at one-half off regular price. Of course the sale is limited to merchandise on hand. Terry Foren, Ships Stores December 2009 Page 1

2 Moorage Matters Loren Beach, Moorage Chair Dredging season is here. As we go to press, the center part of the Walk 1 fairway and some adjacent slips have been deepened. "Nessie" has moved and is now working on the area along the Headwalk and under the corner by the Headwalk connection. All slips are now filled and the waiting list is down to one boat, with an additional boat coming onto it at the swearing-in ceremony at the December general meeting. All the planned moorage upgrades for the fall work party cycle are done and plans are being made for the March 2010 work party. One defective waller plank was replaced on Walk 3 due to premature rot. The Club will be sourcing some spare treated planks for spring insertion and beyond so that we will have spares on hand. No matter how well chemically-treated these big planks are, rot can sometimes occur inside them sooner than expected, calculated, or predicted. Members are already claiming some "ground floor" slots on the new dinghy floats, with the understanding that all their little boats will have to come off for a while during the next work party when planks are unscrewed to allow the upper framing to be installed. Quite a bit more floatation will also be added. By January you need to have your new 2011 Registration Stickers on. Apply them exactly where the law requires, while you are at it. Failure to comply can result in a fine, and our Club rules require that each boat much display a current and properly applied sticker. Winter rains and clogged cockpit drains are a bad combination. We recently dewatered the cockpit of a boat with about 50 gallons in it. Nothing had overflowed into its cabin yet, but the water was within a couple inches of doing so. Check your drains while you are routinely checking your lines and chafe gear. If you have a small boat and want to reduce your moorage cost to the minimum, take a look at the single slip beside the patio float. This rents at the "Walk 2a" rate, the lowest rate in the Club. You do have to make a small jog maneuver to enter and exit. Four-way tie is possible and it best fits boats at or under 8' of beam. Arguably one of the most protected slips in our moorage. Past occupants have been an O Day 25 and the 19" Club launch powerboat. Happy Holidays AnnouncementS Sign up now to be a 2010 Clubhouse Steward! Jas. Adams, Clubhouse Chair If your schedule makes joining work parties a challenge, you can fulfill your entire year's RCYC work-hour obligation by signing up to be a Clubhouse Steward for one calendar month in This requires weekly visits, on your own schedule during a specified calendar month, to do routine cleaning chores in the Clubhouse. The work is not difficult, the hours are totally flexible, and you have the satisfaction of helping to maintain our wonderful oak-paneled Clubhouse! Please contact the Clubhouse Chair (Jas. 3 Vice Commodore's Report Chuck Fisher, Vice Commodore What to Do When Rose Calls At some time or another over the course of the coming year, you will get a call from Rose Zehner. Rose will ask you be part of a Club happening. She will be asking you to help make a Club happening happen. What you want to do when Rose calls is say, Yes, how can I help! Rose has agreed to serve as Activities Chair for another year, but she will need your help. New members are, by virtue of their new member status, members of the Activity Committee. If you want to volunteer, Rose s is artrosezehner@comcast.com 2010 Calendar The calendar of events and activities for 2010 is being finalized. As of this writing, we are waiting for all important race dates from the Race Committee, among others. If you are part of a committee with dates for the Club calendar, now is the time to get those in. RCYC internal activities and events have scheduling priority, but don t wait too long! There is a lot happening around the Club next year including being the host Club for CRYA. Clubhouse Rental It is not too early to make your 2010 Clubhouse rental arrangements. See the July, 2009 Vice Commodore s report for specific instructions on how to confirm your Clubhouse rental. Soup and Sail Don t forget to put Soup and Sail on your calendar. What better goal than to plan to be out on the river on the first day of January Besides, what a great excuse for consuming all that eggnog during the Holiday season. After all, a sailor has to get in shape. Takes time to build up that little extra layer of insulation against the usual January winds. Getting to Know You Oregon State University wants to get to know you! In a first of its kind study, at least in Oregon, Oregon State University, College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS) is conducting a study of recreational ocean users. The goal is to better understand the communities that use the ocean for recreation as opposed to those communities that use the ocean for commerce. The contact to be a part of this study is Chris Eardley, an Oregon State University graduate student. If you are interested in participating, Chris at ceardley@coas.oregonstate.edu. Participants in the study are requested to mention which ocean recreational user group(s) you belong to and provide your mailing address to receive a questionnaire. The information will be grouped and serve as a foundation for policy decisions. Education Bill Kramer, Education Chair Knitting Aboard: January 16th, 2010 The Education class for January 2010 will be Knitting Aboard. Susan Wilcox is leading this exciting day to get together and knit. Spend Saturday January 16th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm with your RCYC knitting friends. The day will start with a discussion about knitting aboard and local and cruising resources, projects and stories. A soup lunch will be provided. After lunch will be knitting and instruction for those who want to learn. Knitters, bring your projects. If you have never knitted, Susan suggests bringing size US 8 needles and Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted, which are good starter tools and materials. Susan asks that you call or her at walkaways. susan@gmail.com or call her at so she can answer any questions and get a count of who is interested in attending. There will not be an education night in December. Walk 5 Bar BQ and Auction December 2009 Page 3

7 RCYC RACING COMMUNITY BRING HOME AWARDS If you ve been on the River for racing events this year you may have noticed the big yellow-bottomed C&C 38 Cool Change bearing down on the marks with lots of happy sailors riding the rail. They always look like they re having a great time with smiling faces and laughter heard as they go whizzing by. Cool Change skippers Frank and Sandy Noragon were honored with the Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association s Good Times Trophy at the OCSA banquet on November 14, for their obvious contribution to creating good sailing fun for their crew and themselves in racing events on the River A month earlier, on October 17, the Noragon s won the coveted Sailor of the Year award at the Small Yacht Sailing Club of Oregon s annual awards banquet at PYC. This is the crème de la crème of awards in the local sailboat racing community and reflects enormous commitment to the sport on the part of recipients. According to Rich Jones, SYSCO S Commodore, the Sailor of the Year award is given to nominees whose overall contribution to SYSCO and the sailing community is exceptional. The award looks at things like event participation and sharing experiences and skills, providing sailing opportunities to others, and promoting the sport of sailing. In addition, the Noragon s won the cruising division of the historic Bridge to Bridge race from Astoria to Newport last September. Frank credits Sandy s enthusiasm for getting Cool Change into racing five years ago. He praises her successful efforts in managing crew for Cool Change, which she has recruited from Oregon Women s Sailing Association s flourishing membership. They typically race with a crew of twelve, though at one point they had fourteen crew members on board. Frank said Eric Rimkus dubbed Cool Change the Haitian refugee boat because of the numerous crew members hanging on the rail! Sandy and Frank have three primary rules in racing their boat and the first is training. In the past five years they ve been fortunate to have some talented mentors from the sailing community on board teaching and training crew. They try to have a balance of female and male crew. For each race they assign crew positions, which is where the second rule comes in. When a woman is assigned a job like grinding winches, she must ask for help if she needs it. Her male crew counterpart will not automatically help out or take over unless she asks for his help. The third rule for racing on Cool Change is having fun, both during and after the race. The Noragon s always have a post-race social on board, for skippers and crew, once the boat is snug in its slip on Walk 1. The Noragon s participate in OWSA s Wednesday Night Sailing program and the informal winter races on Sundays. The WNS program is designed to give women the opportunity to get out on boats. Other RCYC members, such as Alan Bergen and Jim Calnon, also participate with their boats, Thirsty and Katzenjammer. With the informal Sunday racing, the Cool Change crew focuses on learning different positions on the boat in a less competitive atmosphere. Sandy and Frank appreciate the efforts of Eric and Kim Rimkus s role as RCYC Race Chairs and they all, as well as the sailing community at large, appreciate Gary Whitney s exemplary work for many years at sailpdx.com in promptly issuing race results. Gary has been involved with OWSA Education classes for over a decade, and in years past volunteered in the OCSA sponsored Sailing Education Week. Gary was recognized for his contribution to the sailing community with OCSA s Sailor of the Year award, which is a two and a half foot high silver cup bearing the names of recipients for the past 35 years. Just as meaningful to Gary, in addition to the silver cup, was the standing ovation he received from his fellow sailors at the OCSA banquet. Gail O Neill December 2009 Page 7
