We will be updating our volunteer list in the coming months and have committee sign up tables at our next Members Meeting is shaping up to be an exciting and fun filled year and we need your input and help especially on the newsletter, PR efforts and web page administration. If meeting and greeting people and helping to bring new members into the club might be something you would like, we would love to have you join a Committee. Our current Committees and volunteers are: Membership Committee--- Terry Nauck & Joan Kachel Co Chairs 2017 Charity Regatta Committee --- Craig Spicer Fleet Captain Small Boats---Nick Amendola Fleet Captain Racing---Frank Brown Fleet Captain Cruising---Bob Diamond Race Committee---Susan Watkins, Chair Land Side Events--- Colleen & Fred Hall, Chairs Public Relations -----Vicki Livingston, Chair Webmaster----Aarron Szalacinski Membership Directory -- Sandy Dumas Volunteer Committee--- Gary Schwarting, Chair Communications Coordinator Jonnie Westerop As you know but might not appreciate fully, the Gulf Coast Sailing Club exists because of its wonderful volunteers. Each year we, the club members, select officers from the membership to guide our club forward but many more volunteers are needed for the club to survive and thrive. Our main source of income is from our dues so membership is very important to wellbeing of the club so if you have friends who might be interested in the club bring them to the next meeting to see what we are about. Volunteering for the Regatta Committee, our social committee for coordinating our land side events, our small boat sailing committee, our public relations committee or helping out with our monthly newsletter or web page are all important roles for club members. Please visit the Club s web page at to check out events coming up

Special guest speaker - Roger Horton. Sailor, Novelist & Artist will share the little known details of the Cuban Revolution " The connection in the early 1960s between the Cuban Revolution and then, colony of British Guiana. One dark connection that the Us Government has neglected to mention in our official History, in fact one that most of remains well hidden. It is not commonly known that a faction of Allen Dulles s CIA backed, armed and provided Fidel Castro with over well over a hundred Radio stations, the network was called Radio Rebelde. They in a sense made it possible to overcome 40 other revolutionary groups to steel the revolution. When Castro turned on them, it was cover your backside time at the CIA and to say the least, President Eisenhower was not happy went he learned what had been going on. He gave then, Vice President Nixon, the task of getting Castro out of power in Cuba and wanted it done before he was out of office. Well, that didn t work out. When Kennedy beat Nixon and inherited covert operations he was uncomfortable with. He made adjustments that set the CIA up for failure at the Bay of Pigs. At the same point in history, the colony of British Guiana was on the brink of independence. Kennedy sent the

6 CIA to make sure there would not be another Castro on the western Hemisphere and got it wrong. It s a hell of an untold story. I was there during a small part of it. Captain Roger C. Horton, has been for nearly sixty years a sailor and merchant mariner. Holding an Unlimited Master of Oceans license, in the US Merchant Marine, Roger has been an officer for over 55 years, 4 more in foreign flag ships. He was born in 1942 and grew up sailing the Florida coast and the Bahamas. Just short of the age of 15 he left home to work at sea. Adding a few years to his age, he found work on small foreign flag vessels, carrying cargo under sail in the Caribbean. Having learned celestial navigation early, he earned a mates position on a Honduran ship, eventually working his way to captain on another vessel. Ships made regular calls to Island ports. The Matanzas, Havana, Cienfuegos and ports in the Banes area were frequent destinations during the last couple years of the Batista government. Cargos included carrying contract sugar workers from Port a Prince Haiti to ports in the Bay of Nipe. In 1961 he began working for Wind Jammer Cruises, and later to US flag vessels. In the mid 60 s he spent time prospecting British Guiana, Roraima, and province of Brazil before entering the Army in In Viet Nam, Roger operated Army tugs, running fuel an munition barges in the Mekong Delta. After taking cargos all over the world for the past 50 years, he retired to S.W. Florida, where he continues to sail the coast and venture into the Islands. Roger has also had parallel careers as a Novelist, Marine Artist and illustrator. As a writer and artist he can draw from a wide and interesting life experience. His last novel, set in South Florida and Cuba , tells the story of the Cuban Revolution from many perspectives. He is currently writing the sixth and last novel in the HURRICANE ROAD Series, taking his characters up to and past the Bay of Pigs debacle of He hopes to have it complete and ready for publication this winter. Last month s GCSC meeting was a raft full of fun - Charles Daneko of Winslow Life Raft Company spoke on the steps and costs related to recertifying Life Rafts. They had a good crowd trying out the rafts.. Winslow Life raft company did a presentation on how to plan for using a life raft, what to do and even let us play with a real one including showing how to collect drinking water from the canopy. Terry and Betti both jumped in to check it out.

9 Sailors, We are pleased to announce that we have coordinated a Labor Day weekend race to St Pete and back! Our friends at the St Petersburg Yacht Club (SPYC) have graciously invited us to race up, spend the night, and race home over the upcoming Labor Day weekend. The race will start Friday at noon off Ft Myers Beach and will run up the coast to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for a finish. We will then cruise on to the SPYC where we will have overnight dockage and a BBQ at the clubhouse. The following morning we will be able to reload the boats and race back from St Pete leaving at noon and arriving back at Ft Myers beach by approximately noon Monday. This will give everyone time to cruise back to Naples and/or put up their boats and get cleaned up for going back to work on Tuesday. This is a unique opportunity and these races will be part of the Boat of the Year and SWFLSail.com programs. The SWFlSail program replacing Sail Play and by signing up early you will be able to join in on this and 12 other regattas. This is 13 of the 14 regattas that will make up our BOTY program coordinated with CMCS out of Ft Myers. NOTE the deadline for getting the entries in for this are August 17, It is important that we meet these deadlines so we can coordinate food, drink, awards, and dockage with our friends at SPYC. Additional information will be available on SWFLSail.com and on the GCSC website regarding payments and coordination. Attached to this you will find a PDF of the updated BOTY schedule and the two notice of race forms for these races. I look forward to having you all join in. If you have any questions or comments please contact me, Jerry Watkins, or Frank Brown as we will be able to give you details going forward. Sincerely, Chris Hagan

10 Is your boat insurance enough? A Sleepy Subject That Could Keep a Boater Awake at Night NEWS From BoatUS Boat Owners Association of The United States 880 S. Pickett St., Alexandria VA Read this press release online at: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact: D. Scott Croft, , SCroft@BoatUS.com Photo Available at: Photo Caption: Does your insurance policy cover this? It all depends on the fine print. A Sleepy Subject That Could Keep a Boater Awake at Night 7 important things to know about the fine print on your boat s insurance policy ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 5, 2017 While it s a subject not often discussed, knowing what s in your boat s insurance policy could mean the difference between having to pay significant costs out of pocket for a claim or coming away from the claims experience in good shape. What do you need to know? Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) takes a look at the fine print on seven of the most important coverages. 1. The consequential damage fine print: Half of all sinkings occur at the dock when some small part below the waterline fails. However, these parts that include such things as an rubber outdrive bellows, for example, most often fail due to wear, tear, and corrosion or a lack of maintenance, so the policy won t pay for a new bellows. But here s the rub: As a consequence of the failed bellows, your boat has now sunk and a total loss. Who pays for that? Check your policy now for consequential damage coverage that pays for these losses that often start with a failed part that may be excluded under the policy. In this case, the failed bellows may not be covered but the rest of the repairs or total loss (sunk boat) will be. One caveat: This consequential damage coverage often applies only to major or total losses. It s typical, for example, to cover the immediate consequential damage resulting from any fire, explosion, sinking, demasting, collision or stranding. 2. The fuel-spill liability fine print: In addition to your policy s standard liability coverage for physical damage or bodily injury to a third party, fuel-spill liability protects you from claims for cleanup or thirdparty damage from the accidental discharge of oil or fuel that can occur in a sinking, fire, collision or grounding. Some policies just pay the costs associated with a fuel spill up to the policy s set limit of boating liability coverage. A better policy separates out fuel-spill liability and provides coverage up to the maximum amount you can be held liable for under federal law, which today is a whopping $939,800.

11 3. The on-water towing fine print: Many boat insurance policies today offer some kind of on-water towing endorsement that provides a level of towing and assistance for routine breakdowns or soft ungroundings. Know how you will be able to use that coverage including who provides the service and does the company have 24-hour dispatch service? Also know when you will have to pay for a tow out of pocket and be reimbursed. 4. The salvage coverage fine print: When fires, sinkings, a marina shed roof collapse or running up on a shoal damages your boat, you end up with a salvage situation. If the boat is not a total loss and needs to be recovered and brought to a repair facility, costs can escalate quickly. Most boaters assume the cost of raising or moving the boat to safe location is covered by their policy, but some marine insurers will subtract salvage costs from the insured value of the boat, reducing the funds available to repair the boat or the amount paid in the event of a total loss. With some policies on a total loss you may receive a check for the boat s insured value, but only get a small percentage of that insured value perhaps just 5 to 10 percent to pay for salvage costs, again forcing you to pay more out of pocket. Better policies provide salvage coverage that is separate but equal to the boat s hull-value coverage. After all, isn t that why you insure your boat in the first place? 5. The boat trailer fine print: Not all boat insurance policies automatically provide boat trailer coverage so be sure to check. Also find out if there are geographic limits on where you may trailer the boat. Note that if you have an accident while towing, it is your boat policy that pays to repair or replace the trailer, but any third-party damage your trailer causes to property or injuries to people is covered under your auto policy. 6. The liability-only boat policy fine print: If you opt for a liability-only policy, ensure that it provides not only coverage for property damage and bodily injury to others, but also that it provides coverage for salvage and removal of a wreck, and that separate coverage is available for fuel-spill incidents. 7. Not a coverage but a concern: Do you have the experience to be able to salvage your own boat? Most boaters do not, even for a simple salvage operation, let alone after a major catastrophe. Boaters deserve an insurance provider that can arrange for the salvage as quickly as possible, potentially negotiating with crane operators, truckers, storage facilities, local government officials, marina staff and more. The only way to find out if you ll be left holding the bag or will get the help you need is to ask around for other boaters claims experiences. The marine insurance specialists at BoatUS ( ) can help you review your current policy. Free quotes are available at BoatUS.com/insurance. About Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS): Celebrating more than 50 years, BoatUS is the nation s largest organization of recreational boaters with more than a half-million members. We are the boat owners voice on Capitol Hill and fight for their rights. We help ensure a roadside trailer breakdown doesn t end a boating or fishing trip before it begins. When boats break down on the water, TowBoatUS brings them safely back to the launch ramp or dock, 24/7. The BoatUS Marine Insurance Program gives boat owners affordable, specialized coverage and superior service they need. We help keep boaters safe and our waters clean with assistance from the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. Visit BoatUS.com.
