Commodore s Corner Captain Seaby Bess We are so blessed to live in a place where the water doesn t freeze. The rest of our family are up North and we get reports of the freezing rain and snowfall. Here however we get to sail and enjoy the water year round. Betti and I met actually racing in a group up North called North Point Sail Racing Association (NPSRA) in Winthrop Harbor, IL. Betti was on the ladies boat and I was on a friends Beneteau 40.7 as crew of 7. Well, one race day the ladies boat pulled up to our boat at the dock to ask if the winds were enough to sail (light wind day) I looked over and saw this beautiful woman with no ring on her finger and as Betti says starting peacocking and telling people what to do like I owned the boat. In my defense, I was the first mate and had some new unexperienced guys that did need coaching. After the race the group went to our usual place for pizza called Ruffalo s. And as usual every boat would sit only with their crew at separate tables. Had that boat not pulled up to the dock that day I might have not ever met the love of my life. The reason I m sharing this is I believe it s easy for all of us to be comfortable sitting with that same group, including me. So I m asking all of us to mix it up and sit with someone new. We have an amazing value being members of GCSC. From sailing small boats at Sugden, monthly meetings with free food, regattas, cruising events, opportunities to dine at amazing clubs like NSYC, Marco Island etc and huge opportunities to meet people and get on the water. This year however we have a large decline in renewals and at $75.00 it a pretty big bang for your buck. So I am asking for your help. Below is a link to the membership application. If you know someone who might be interested in joining please pass on the membership form. We have an exciting event coming up which is our Annual major Regatta. Whether you race or not but would like to support the event there is a sponsorship form in the link below. Thank you for your continued support and membership in Gulf Coast Sailing Club. Respectfully, Capt Seaby Commodore GCSC captseaby@at-your-command.com

Membership Meeting Wednesday, February 14 th - 6 pm River Park Community Center in Naples Gulf Coast Sailing Club will be hosting a Valentines Wine & Cheese Tasting Party. Our lovely Crispin Lippincott will be providing various cheeses and fruit, while our Club (meaning Jeff & Shelly) will provide desserts, along with the usual soda and water. We would like members to bring a bottle of wine to be sampled (instead of bringing desserts). Wines can be anything you wish - red, white, sparkling or dessert wines. Please keep wine costs between $ So that members can keep track of wines they like, it might be nice to suggest they download this app: Vivino.com Guest speaker SKIP ROWLAND - Sailing is a bloodline sport for Skip. His granddad raced his130 ft schooner across the Atlantic in 1905 for the Kaisers Cup. Skip crewed aboard the original Ondine and as a US Marine won the all service sailing championship. He has owned five offshore yachts, competed in the Trans-Pac, raced with Tall Ships in Australia and was division winner in Thailand s Kings Cup. A former small market radio personality, Skip has authored two books and numerous magazine articles. His speaking style is compelling, entertaining and inspiring.
SKIP ROWLAND PRESENTATION So You Want To Go Offshore is not a dry nuts and bolts subject talk. With enthusiasm Skip and former crew now wife Denise, speak about chucking it all to sail to the drop dead beauty of South Pacific Islands, the difficult, and occasional humorous incidences where the best of electronics are of no use. They have raced with the Tall Ships, been caught in a flooding river and fought pirates on deck in the notorious Malacca Strait. In the end however, love conquers all on a sapphire sea under a canopy of stars. It s an amazing true story of what can take place when average people live an unusual life. You will not be disappointed. FEW LIVE TO TELL OF THE TERROR AND BATTLE WHEN PIRATES ATTACK THEIR YACHT Captain Skip Rowland s No Return Ticket books are a gripping true story of pirates on deck, dangerous storms and corrupt officials. But in the end it s a love story, as his heart is captured by a lovely crew-mate and romance blossoms on sapphire sea beneath a breathless canopy of stars. From the desk of a master storyteller this true adventure will have you believing you are aboard Endymion- on deck - immersed in the experience.

New Year s Regatta 2018 By Jonnie Westerop Dam it was cold. Artic cold for Florida. I raced with Dragonfly for the New Year's Regatta and it was cold, especially in the morning. We had a crew of four with 3 passengers, 2 had never sailed before. They were a little freaked at first, but they soon realized they were in good hands. It was great sailing, with steady 14 knot winds, we completed 4 races by Naples Pier. Of the 14 entries - 9 showed up - a few boats missed the tide, and were stuck until the afternoon. Our boat took off from Marco Island at 7:30 in the very cold morning, but even with the cold wind from the north, the seas were pretty calm. I wore 3 jackets most of the day until it started warming to the low 60s in the afternoon. Capt Frank Brown was great - the strategy we played was always well ahead of the others. The race courses are triangular shaped, so you have different wind trajectories after every buoy rounding. Most of the boats would head in one direction, killing each other s wind - Dragonfly would break off in a different direction. Wow! Exhilarating! Finn was on our tail most of the races with their crew of four. A great day of sailing and racing!!
A rough trip to Fort Myers Beach by Jonnie Westerop Wes and I went to Fort Myers Beach during MLK weekend we had a destination change due to the weather Panther Key is now this coming month. We joined Bob & Lorelei Diamond, Pat and Joe from Rhode Island and Terry Nauck and his lovely wife Cathie Scanlon. We left Saturday to nice enough weather, but what should have been a 5 hour trip took us 8 hours as the wind increased from 10 knots to about 28 in our face. Big waves, lots of pots (how crabbers catch those delectable Stone Crabs and Blue Crabs YUM!). The pots sit on the bottom of the Gulf, attached to cables with buoys floating in the water, marking the spot. Boats get caught on them, especially sail boats with big keels. By mid-day the waves were from 5 to 7 foot, and there seemed to be mine fields of pots, which we were spotting and dodging, while steering to avoid direct side hits from the waves. Fun. Not so much fun. Bob and Lorelei sailed closer to shore and avoided the worst of the pots when we returned on Sunday we followed their path much better. The Gulf of Mexico waves come from every direction, not smooth waves like an ocean. I got bruised a bit, certainly a rough ride, but on the positive side, I don't seem to get sea sick. The weekend in Fort Myers Beach was great - we walked downtown - enjoyed some great food and conversation. The sail home to Marco Island was much nicer - took us 4 hours with the wind at our back.
