Commodore s Message As this is my first message as Commodore, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of General Committee and the general membership, to thank our immediate Past Commodore Mark Whitehead and all outgoing members of the General Committee and other committees for all that they have achieved over the past two years. The Bridge Ours is truly an exceptional club on many fronts the fact that a rower can become Commodore is just one example of this and really gives credence to the fact that ours is both a sailing and a rowing club, with both sports having equal importance. I feel daunted enough following in the footsteps of all the great sailors who have been Commodore before me; the fact that I m the first rower to be Commodore since Bob Wilson had the role in makes me even more conscious of the trust that has been placed in me. Commodore Robert Stoneley 會長史東禮 Building the next generation of sailors has been a key focus of the General Committee for a number of years, so it s really pleasing to see the plethora of different events members of our youth squad, The Sharks, will be attending over the summer the Optimist UK Nationals, the Optimist Europeans, the Optimist Worlds, the Laser 4.7 Worlds, the Radial Worlds, the Radial UK Nationals, the 29er Europeans and the 29er Worlds. Not to be outdone, the rowers and paddlers are also off to far flung places and will be representing the Club in places as diverse as Philadelphia, Copenhagen and Kona, Hawaii. The youngest competitor, Elizabeth Knight, has been putting in long hours of training not just at weekends but also before and after school during the week. Her dedication should be an inspiration not just for other junior members but also for our more seasoned older members. We wish all of our overseas competitors every success. For those of you staying in Hong Kong for the hot summer months, please remember the Sunset Series is on every Friday until 26 August. Even if you aren t sailing, this is a great opportunity to leave the office early to come down to the Club for sundowners and watch the racing from the Main Bar terrace. There can surely be no better way to end the week? I hope you all have an enjoyable summer however you are spending it, and I look forward to welcoming you back as we kick off the new season with the Autumn Regatta on 10 and 11 September make sure it s in your diary.

Past Commodore s Message When I wrote my first message to you two years ago, the Kellett Island Development project was about to start and I am very pleased to report that as I step down as your Commodore, we have celebrated the opening of the very impressive Annex New Wing. The new Ship Shop has opened and is already proving to be a resounding success. The feedback from members has been extremely positive and the new shop has certainly been worth the wait. The squash courts, too, have opened and the administration offices have moved into their new home. By now members will also have moved into the building on an interim basis to use the temporary changing rooms and gym. Hopefully it won t be long now until the new gym opens in the East Wing Extension and members move into their new changing rooms in the Central Block. I am very grateful to all members for their patience through the disruption of the building project but now as we are beginning to see the final results for ourselves, we can appreciate that it has all been worthwhile. Commodore Mark Whitehead 會長韋浩德 In addition to the development project, we have seen some wonderful successes in our core sports. Hong Kong Race Week, Stanley Dragon Boat Championships, the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, Volvo announcing a stopover in Hong Kong and a new record at the Rolex China Sea Race. This year s Electoral General Meeting was held on 14 June and I congratulate my successor Robert Stoneley, new Flag Officers and members of the General Committee as well as all newly-elected members of the Sailing, Rowing and Membership committees. If you are inspired to play your part in the running of the Club, we are always looking for volunteers so please do not hesitate to contact the Commodore or the General Manager. It has been an absolute honour to serve our Club and I thank you all for the support you have given me and the General Committee. Tin Hau Festival At the end of April, the Club made its annual pilgrimage to Tin Hau Temple at Joss House Bay to make offerings to the Goddess of the Sea and ask her for her blessing for the forthcoming year. 10 General Manager s Message The Bridge I am absolutely certain that F&B s Main Bar promotions for the summer months are going to go down extremely well with members. In July there will be unlimited servings of craft beer in an aptly named Craft Beer Buffet which will feature Mondays to Wednesdays for only $98 per person. In August, craft beer will be replaced by wine at only $148 per person. You will be hard-pressed to find a better deal around town. Further, whilst you are enjoying your liquid buffets, you can enjoy a selection of complimentary tapas as we have Tapas Night in the Main Bar also on Mondays to Fridays from July to September. This month members can start to explore (and taste their way through) the new a la carte menus in the Bistro and the Compass Room. On 4 July we celebrate Independence Day in the Compass Room, on 7 July we present you with the Born Sake Dinner and on 18 August the extremely popular Veuve Clicquot Champagne Dinner returns. For details of all of these F&B offerings and more, please see pages 42 to 45 or visit the Club website. General Manager Mark Bovaird 總經理布馬克 On Wednesday 8 June, World Oceans Day, the Club stopped providing single use plastic bags, beverage bottles and straws. This initiative has been very well-received by members and we should all be proud that we are doing our part for the environment and that our Club is regarded as a global leader in the fight against plastic waste. Please remember that re-usable bags, bottles and water containers are available from the Ship Shop and the Club will not charge you for the filtered water you use to fill your bottles, etc. I am sure our gym users are very happy to be out of the old gym even if it is to temporary accommodation in the Annex New Wing but even its temporary, it s certainly a lot larger and brighter and that must be a good thing. We look forward to opening the new gym (and changing rooms) in the fourth quarter. I would like to add my thanks to those of Mark Whitehead to you all for bearing with us through this time. Please may I remind members that guests to Middle Island may not bring their dogs at weekends and public holidays (Bye Law 16.7(e)). If you are staying here for the summer, please do have a look at the lessons and courses on offer be it sailing, rowing or swimming all information on the Club website. We will soon be offering squash coaching to members of all ages so please keep an eye out for that information. Have you played snooker recently? 12 The Bridge Kellett Island Development Milestones Reached A year and a half after breaking ground, the new Ship Shop and Annex New Wing officially opened on 3 June. Unfortunately this was a few days later than envisaged as approval of the Occupation Permit got delayed as the collapsed wall at the Central Police Station subsumed the team at the Building Department that is responsible for our project. n anticipation of receiving the official Occupation Permit and wanting to take advantage of the very best Feng Shui date, two opening celebrations had been scheduled for 31 May; a Bai San for the opening of the Annex New Wing and a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Ship Shop. Come the day however, with no permit in sight and wanting to take advantage of the fortuitous timing, the events were changed to become completion ceremonies. When the Occupation Permit was finally granted, the Ship Shop was officially opened and there was a small ribbon cutting ceremony before the first long anticipated matches took place on our new squash courts. The Club s main administration offices also moved out of the old Admin Building into their new home on the second floor of the Annex New Wing (these include the General Manager, Accounts, IT, Rowing, PR & Communications and Sponsorship and Corporate Partnerships). The Boatyard, Marine and Membership offices remain where they were. Later in June the gym and members changing rooms also moved into the Annex New Wing. This is a temporary move to allow our contractor less constrained access to the works area in the main Kellett Island clubhouse and expedite the completion of the remaining project phases. We expect to move these facilities to their final locations in about six months. Using temporary facilities isn t ideal but at least we have been able to find a way to give our members continuous access to a gym at Kellett Island and not to use converted containers as temporary changing facilities, as was the case during the turn of the century refurbishment of the clubhouse. Pleasingly, David Ho, manager of the Ship Shop, has reported a sharp uptick in sales since opening with new club-branded items being especially popular. Feedback on the new squash courts and temporary gym has also been very positive. Please don t just take our word for it and see them for yourselves. 12 JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY!

Feature Edmond de Rothschild Spring Regatta Edmond de Rothschild Spring Regatta WORDS: LINDSAY LYONS / IRIS YANG PHOTOS: GUY NOWELL 82 boats signed on for the first day of the Edmond de Rothschild Spring Regatta, which marked the finale of the Club s sailing season. Race officer Charlie Manzoni set up shop at Hung Hom, with 10 to 12kts of easterly blowing out an early rain cloud and treating sailors to a bright and breezy afternoon s racing. With significant current affecting the centre of the start line, the majority of boats elected to start at the committee boat end, with only two staying in the quieter waters at the pin end, close to the Kowloon waterfront. 14 JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY!

n spite of some fiercely contested starts, not a single boat was over early and a smooth afternoon s sailing was completed in good time for sundowners at the Main Bar and submission of a number of protests against boats alleged to have missed the leeward spreader mark. An uninspiring forecast from both Hong Kong Observatory and WindGuru, promising thunder, lightning, rain and no breeze, may have contributed to the lessening of the fleet to 73 boats for second day but, as is so often the case in Hong Kong, the reality was far removed from the predictions. Initial conditions encouraged Race officer Charlie Manzoni to set a quick race for all fleets, in order to satisfy the minimum regatta requirement of two races. In 4 to 6kts of south easterly, the Impala fleet was the first start of nine to go off without any delays, with only Madame K failing to return when called over. Feature Edmond de Rothschild Spring Regatta JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY! 15

Feature Edmond de Rothschild Spring Regatta With all boats finishing within an hour of their start and the breeze holding steady, Manzoni lost no time in launching the start sequence for the third and final race of the regatta. During the sequence the wind started to build, settling at 10 to 12kts and swinging +/- 10 degrees from the course axis, with the Etchells class the only one to seriously test the pin end of the line with Gunga Din going over five seconds ahead of the gun, followed by Easy Tiger and Shrub. All exonerated themselves but probably cost themselves a place on the podium in the process. The surprise conditions resulted in a rather early finish to the regatta and, with no protests to be heard, a lively prizegiving ensued, with trophies presented by Managing Director of Edmond de Rothschild, Humbert Garreau de Labarre. The Club would like to thank its sponsors for their support, including Title Sponsor Edmond de Rothschild and supporting sponsors Yacht Style, Sail-World.com and San Miguel. As always, a massive thank you also goes to the Club s army of volunteers, whose efforts ensure a successful and safe event; Race Officer Charlie Manzoni and his team of Tony Chan, Adrienne Loeffler, Ivy Mak, Belinda Ng, Charlie Perkins, Emmanuel Pitsilis, Barry Truhol, Victor Tsien, Carl Wilkinson and Eric Yeung. Safety Officer Ailsa Angus and her team of Tommy Chan, Calle Krokstäde, Anders Hellberg, Niclas Rydin and Scott Surek. 18 Jeanneau Class Regatta A Tale in Two Parts Feature Jeanneau Class Regatta WORDS AND PHOTOS: GUY NOWELL The RHKYC s annual Class Regatta is an occasion when the Club s Class fleets pick up their passports and head off to the wilds of Port Shelter. Impalas, Dragons, and Flying Fifteens racing together on short courses with Etchells and Sportsboats (M25s, J/80s, J/70s) on the long course. The idea is to get everyone out of the harbour and into the scenic environs of the New Territories for the weekend, and it s a good idea. here have been spectacularly sunny Class Regattas in the past, and a spectacularly cold one that sticks in the memory, but there has rarely been one that was quite as windless as the weekend of 12 and 13 February. On the Saturday there was barely enough breeze to send the fleets around the course, twice. Barely, but enough. Under leaden skies and with not much more than hope to keep the fleet moving, two races were completed on the Saturday afternoon. 18 JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY!

JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY! 19 Feature Jeanneau Class Regatta

Feature Jeanneau Class Regatta The forecast for Sunday was uninspiring and for once it was correct. RO Nigel Reeves found a small patch of easterly breeze that looked promising, but failed to live up to either its looks or its promise, and died completely just as the fleet leaders rounded the leeward mark for the first time. It was too late to call a shortened course, and the breeze never recovered enough to get the boats up to the top mark for a finish there, either. Race abandoned, restart. But even that wasn t on the agenda. From 1130hrs the fleet jilled around in a flat calm and something precious close to fog, varying the tedium with a bit of paddling here and there, and even a knot-tying lesson. By 1330hrs everyone had had enough; even the ever-patient RO. Up went the AP over A, and everyone went home. So closely packed is the Club s sailing calendar, the next available date for a resail was 14 May the morning of the first day of the annual Spring Regatta. The Class Regatta needed just one more race to constitute a series. In marked contrast to the conditions in February, Victoria Harbour sparked up 8 to 10kts of breeze from the east, and wanting to get it in the bag as quickly as possible RO Charlie Manzoni sent the long course boats to Tai Koo Shing and everyone else to Shau Kei Wan. And back and that was enough to put three races on the card and complete the Jeanneau Class Regatta. Don Chow of China Pacific, Jeanneau agents, gave away the prizes with aplomb and good humour, and an excellent time was had by all. 20 JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY!

Sailing Volunteers The Race Management Sub-Committee review of the year WORDS: LUCY SUTRO As the 2015/16 season comes to an end we look back on a busy year in which the Club held not only the usual class racing and major club events, but also a World Championship for the Etchells in November and Hong Kong Race Week in February. This volume of sailing events is just not possible to host without members volunteering to help organise and manage the events. In a year like the 2015/16 season, the requirement for volunteers for race management is roughly as set out below: Total volunteer days Normal class racing 370 Autumn Regatta, China Coast Regatta, Lipton Trophy, Around the Island, 170 Tomes Cup, Class Regatta, HKNVR, Nations Cup, Spring Regatta Etchells World Championships 280 Hong Kong Race Week 500 Total 1280 With this level of support required, any time volunteered to assist in any of the areas be it on shore or on the water it is very much appreciated by the organisers of these events. Luckily Club members have been more than generous with their time and some 440 individuals stepped up to help out during the year. The amount of time volunteered from those who were only able to give half a day for normal class racing to those who could do more the breakdown being as follows: 10 days or more 22 people 5 to 9 days 46 people 2 to 4 days 139 people 1.5 days or less 235 people At the Volunteers Party held mid-may at Kellett Island, thank you awards were presented to Elberti Uiterwaal-Postma, Lesley Anderson and Bonnie Cheng who each gave up more than 20 days over the season. Looking forward, the Club s success in demonstrating that we can host international events means that we have a busy few years ahead of us with the Optimist Asian and Oceanian Championships in October, 2017, the 29er World Championships in early 2018 and the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race in the spring of So expect to see more calls for help as these events come closer! If you are interested in learning more about volunteering then please do let the Sailing Office know. And for those who would like to improve their skills the Race Management Sub-Committee are planning a number of race management and mark laying training events over the next year. Details of these will be circulated via the fortnightly Sailing Circular and via the Class Secretaries as and when dates are fixed. 25 Martin Heath Memorial Cup and Sausage Sizzle WORDS AND PHOTOS: CARLYON KNIGHT-EVANS Results will show that David took the gun shortly ahead of Howard with the final podium position taken by Nick. Those that had read the Notice of Race would have noticed that given the race was in memory of Martin, they were also asked to dress as Martin. With David, Howard and Nick all having overlooked this requirement, none were eligible to challenge for the main prize of the day, which was for best dressed. Sailing Those in the running for the main prize were Clive Bunyard who had dressed as a Hiking Martin, Jo, who with an insider s advantage having raided Martin s much coveted sailing wardrobe and Ishi, who had carefully applied duct tape to his shorts and shirt, wore a white floppy hat and sported a beard. espite a miserable weather forecast and the threat of heavy rain, the largest Flying Fifteen fleet to have assembled in two years took to Victoria Harbour to race in memory of Martin Heath, who very sadly passed away in April. Martin s oldest son, Jo, and his youngest daughter, Polly, had both travelled out to Hong Kong for this event with Jo taking to the water in Martin s former boat Ffolly while Polly, perhaps wisely, chose to watch the event from the safety of the Main Bar armed with a pair of binoculars. With a southerly breeze blowing, the fleet headed down to Kowloon Bay for the start of the race. The Race Officer had selected S3 as the course for the day, which involved a beat up to PWD, a run back to Kowloon Bay, a beat up to Dock Buoy, a short run back to Kowloon Bay and then a final beat back up to PWD. in close pursuit. Nick Atkinson snuck through in 3 rd with Carlyon Knight-Evans and Clement Brunet-Moret both thinking they were going to get round in 4 th. Clement coming in on starboard had right of way and there was a coming together of boats as Carlyon was struggling to round PWD against the tide. The run down to Kowloon Bay was uneventful with no significant places changing; it was the same story on the beat and run to / from Dock Bouy. David and Howard were now having a private battle for first place, with Nick, Clem and Carlyon fighting out for 3 rd. The final beat to PWD saw Pete Britten in his first start in a Fifteen in Hong Kong making a late charge through the fleet, having borrowed Brian s boat (who at this time was still slowly limping home). Back ashore, deliberations began in earnest on who to award best dressed. Despite the authenticity of Jo s outfit; now resplendent with mustard and ketchup, and Clive s alternative Hiking Martin still looking the part, Ishi was eventually declared the winner, with Jo presenting the prize. With prizes dealt with, the fleet s attention turned to the sausage sizzle, but with clouds darkening it was threatening to become a very soggy affair. Koichi Yamamoto and Kunihiro Fukushima took charge of the cooking and before long hot sizzling sausages and cool beers were being handed out to hungry competitors and well wishers who had missed out on the race but were keen to raise a beer for Martin. With the sausages close to depletion, the rain came with a vengeance and some form of shelter was essential. Perfect timing for a group photo! Then to retreat to the Main Bar... Unfortunately for Jo (sailing with Brian Henderson), Ffolly s main halyard broke just before the start and they were not able to compete and instead were forced to limp home sailing without their mainsail against a heavy tide. The fleet had a clean start with Howard Williams, David Chow and Naoki Ishihara the early pace setters. The tide was clearly going to play an important part in the day s racing, which was building throughout the afternoon. By the time the fleet reached the top mark, the first to round PWD was David with Howard JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY! 25

Sir Kenneth Preston Regatta WORDS: COLIN SMITH The Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy was first competed for in 1995, after Sir Kenneth presented it to the Royal Yacht Squadron shortly prior to his death. Sailing Sir Kenneth wished that the trophy be competed for by a deserving one design fleet that had the spirit of one design and involves young sailors. It is a feather in the cap for the Cowes Etchells to have retained it for so many years. The Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy Regatta attracted one of the largest fleets of the Etchells seen in the Solent for many years. Bolstered by the forthcoming 2016 Etchells World Championship, to be held in the Solent from 31 August to 10 September, 28 teams with sailors from Australia, Great Britain, Hong Kong and the USA, raced for the Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy. The eight race programme over three days produced thrilling racing, with 11 teams achieving podium results. Peter Duncan was the winner of the Sir Kenneth Preston Trophy, Ante Razmilovic was second with Lawrie Smith third. Hong Kong was represented by two teams a new boat owned by Marco Pocci and helmed by Martin Kay sailing under Martin s number HKG 884 and Mark Thornburrow s alternate boat AUS 923 (his Hong Kong resident boat is HKG 1406). Also racing were the well known ex-hong Kong boats, 1046 and The racing area the famous Solent is the space between Cowes on the Isle of Wight and Southampton. The Solent is well known as having complex tidal movements over an extremely irregular bottom. Combined with a sailing area surrounded by shoreline, it becomes a real test of sailing ability. By far the most successful competitor was US 1397 sailed by Peter Duncan with Jud Smith and one other as crew. The other place getters were previous Hong Kong resident Ante Razmilovic (GBR 1438) and Laurie Smith (GBR 1434). Hong Kong finished 6 th (Martin and Rocco) and 7 th (Mark Thornburrow). Martin and Rocco showed great potential throughout the whole regatta and could well be a top finisher in the upcoming Worlds to be held in the same area later this year. Mark Thornburrow and his crew are also capable of good results once their training programme is complete. 27 Sailing Top of the Gulf Regatta WORDS: ORIANE VOETS PHOTOS: CHRISTOS ATZEMIAN AND ELBERTI UITERWAAL-POSTMA n 28 April, eight members of the Club s Sharks Optimist racing squad flew to Bangkok accompanied by the Club s Race Coach / Bosun, Christos Atzemian and team leader Brenda Davies to compete in the Top of the Gulf Regatta. This sailing event which takes place annually south of Pattaya doubles as the Thai Nationals Optimist Championship. Our journey to Bangkok started with endurance training organised by Christos at the airport; after running into some issues to check in our sails, we nearly missed our flight and had to race to the departure gate. The rest of our journey to Thailand was less eventful, and we arrived safely (and with no subsequent panic) to Pattaya, in time for a nice team lunch. In the afternoon, we headed to the Ocean Marina Sailing Club, where we got some brand new Opis which we were very excited about. The next morning, the sailing conditions were excellent with a steady 8 to 10kts southwesterly breeze. Christos arranged a full day of training to get us prepared for the three-day regatta. We spent a long day on the water under the burning sun, and all got very hot and tired. Fortunately, after we had finished de-rigging our boats, we were able to gather in the pool and to enjoy the (not so) refreshing water and some very nice smoothies. What a blast! On Saturday morning, we met with 14 other optimist sailors from Hong Kong five from ABC and nine from HHYC to start our first day of the Regatta. JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY! 27

Sailing The TOTG regatta is well-known for its laid-back atmosphere and relaxed organisation. The TOTG veterans were therefore not surprised by the strange registration arrangements and delayed launch, with the regatta starting at 1330hrs instead of the planned 1100hrs. The Sharks did very well in the first day of racing, with Duncan Gregor winning the first race and Eloi Defline coming in 4 th. Unfortunately after just two races a heavy thunderstorm and rain forced the Racing Committee to hoist the AP over A. We returned to the beach completely soaked in time to see one of the racing tents collapse. Luckily no one was hurt. On day two (Sunday) the sky was clear and the 32 to 34C heat had returned. We competed in one last qualifying race before the 149 competitors were split into a Gold and Silver Fleet. In this 3 rd race, I came in 2 nd and Duncan 4 th. Dolf Hendriksen was unfortunate to get a Black Flag. Afterwards we were sent back to the beach to eat a delicious lunch, kindly prepared for us by Brenda Davies and Nigel Clark. The results of the qualifying races were announced and all eight Sharks got into the Gold Fleet!!! In the afternoon, we sailed out for three Gold Fleet races in which Matthew and Duncan came in 2 nd and Dolf twice 3 rd. At 1730hrs, we headed back to shore for our daily dip in the pool. I got a bit of sunstroke but nothing serious anyhow I was determined to sail again the next day, so I recovered fast. The wind on the last day of the regatta was 10 to 15kts and quite oscillating, with big gusts in the afternoon. We sailed four races in which Dolf got a bullet and a 3 rd place. In my last and tenth race of the regatta I grabbed the 4 th place. The 2016 TOTG regatta was over and with 10 races we got one discard. The Sharks had some very good results with Duncan in 2 nd place, Dolf in 6 th, Matthew in 8 th and myself in 21 st (and 1 st at 12 and under), Thibault in 24 th (and 3rd at 12 and under), Eloi in 25 th, Douglas in 26 th and Kala on 47 th out of 149 competitors. 30 VRC Race Series Race 5 Shek O WORDS: JEREMY YOUNG PHOTOS: BARNEY RIGGS AND JEAN GORGUET OUTRIGGER CONTACT outrigger@rhkyc.org.hk Rowing The ladies OC1 and Surf Skis were the first to go, with a group of 7 heading out across the channel. The conditions meant for some great paddling, with a few taking swims through the course. In OC1 Francesca Zino took honours with 1 st place, with Erin Juhl coming in 4 th. Saturday 30 April was a day full of outrigger, surf ski and dragon boat races; the first being the VRC Race Series Race 5. With very changeable conditions leading up to the race, a number of changes took place to the course. With the goal of getting boats to Shek O, the start point for the Coastal Relay, the course ultimately ended up being held to start and finish out of Shek O and would still be the first open water race for the season. The course went from Shek O back beach to Tung Lung Chau, then out to the mid-channel marker and shipping lane, around Ng Fan Chau (the island out from Shek O front beach), back around the lighthouse to Shek O back beach, a total of about 13.5km. Conditions continued to change leading up to the race and with a strong wind there would be decent swell for the downwind runs and some challenging fun into the wind and cross wind aspects. There was a great turnout of 41 paddlers considering it was a long weekend and paddling races on all three days, with 13 (+1) representing the Club in the ladies OC1 and surf ski, men s OC1 and mixed OC2. In Surf Ski, Clare Baldwin took honours with 1 st place. The men OC1 and mixed OC2 were the next group to go making a group of 21 paddlers. Some great battles took place amongst the men in the OC1, with some great tussles and places changing through out the race, and also resulting in several taking swims in the wind and chunky swells. For the Club, Steve Taylor lead the charge coming in 4 th, with David Bulbeck 7 th and Jeremy Young 8 th. John Mclennan, Zach Tuckwell, and Jean-Francois Tremblay came in 11, 13, and 16. Jeff Winterkorn also raced for the Club coming 10 th. In the mixed OC2 Natalie Kwan and Jeremy Burton continued their domination taking 1 st with Raewyn Strachan and Adam Wielowieyski taking 2 nd. The race finished with some relaxed social drinks on the beach and stories of the day being shared. At nearly mid-point through the season, the balance of the series should see some of the great competition and tussles continue for all. 30 JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY!

10 th Toda International Masters Regatta WORDS: DAVID SORTON PHOTOS: WAN NG Rowing t is said that the sun shines on the righteous. This old saying was fully borne out during the Rowing Section s now annual visit to the 10 th Toda International Masters Regatta held on the weekend of 7 and 8 May at the Olympic Boat Course in Tokyo. The 21-strong team bagged a total of 11 gold medals as well as achieving two second-places and two third-places in the 15 events entered. Those of the team that arrived on the Friday afternoon were horrified to find themselves confronted with cold, blustery, showery weather and no boats! Definitely not the best conditions for a rowing regatta! However the gallant RHKYC and Friends, were not going to be put off by these adversities and by sunset our cold, wet stalwarts had sought out and assembled their weapons of war for the following day s competition. Saturday dawned, and it was if the weather fairy was in our team Paddy Talas taking on this additional responsibility. In complete contrast to the wet and windy evening that had preceded it, it was a bright and sunny morning, and our courageous gladiators took to their weapons bright and early. The day started with early gold medals for Guy Parsonage in the Men s B 1x and for the Men s B 4x+; the crew overcoming equipment failures just before and during the race, and relying on superior technique and willpower to overcome their opposition. Next up, the Men s C 4x+ cruised to gold in the absence of any opposition. In a much more competitive Men s 2x race, David Sorton and Ian Brownlee still in shock from their defeat by a crew of 80-year-olds at the regatta a couple of years earlier rowed a sedate Cat. G race to finish a polite third of four, whilst Luc Moron and Bryan Massingham, with no opposition in their Cat. There was early disappointment after the lunch break, when our Men s B 2x crews of Thuan Tran with Marcel Chambers and Guillermo De Las Casas with Mark Hughes narrowly missed the gold, having to be satisfied with second and third respectively. Ohira Koichi and Soraya Nidai then took us back into the gold stakes in the Mixed 2x. The Men s F 4+, facing no opposition in their age group, and with Ian Brownlee s Garmin telling him that he needed 17 hours to recover from the double sculls race, decided to row a tactical race, saving themselves for the following day, and gaining gold despite crossing the line in third place in their race such are the foibles of the Masters competitions. And in the last race of the day Soraya Nidai in the Women s C 1x held off all opposition to take the RHKYC s tally of gold on day one to 8. With the general consensus that the first day s racing had been reasonably successful, some of the team repaired to a relatively sober Japanese dinner, during which Captain Paddy Talas consumed no less than two bottles of premium sake. After a quick visit to the local pizza and sangria restaurant on the way back, the team repaired to their cubicles in the nearby budget Toyoko Inn, to enjoy their beauty sleep in preparation for the final day s competition. Sunday dawned bright, warm and sunny, heralding further successes for the RHKYC and Friends! To prepare properly for the challenges ahead, Ian Brownlee led the team through a proper warm-up routine, using a striped hula-hoop borrowed from the Lantau Boat Club ladies. This time they were joined by Chun Kui, who had spent the previous day shopping in Shinjuku (likely story), having not been required in a racing crew. 32 JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY!

Both the Mixed B 4x+, and the Mixed E 4x+, in which the RHKYC gentlemen were accompanied by ladies from Lantau Boat Club, brought in the gold. Subsequently, in the final race of the regatta, our Men s D 8+, rowing together for the first time, was intent on retaining the title the Men s E crew had narrowly won at the previous year s regatta. With only one crew to beat in order to achieve this aim, and knowing that a rating in excess of 28 spm could lead to the automatic self-destruction of at least four of the crew, they achieved this objective by making an unexpectedly good start, settling down to a surprisingly steady rhythm a length ahead of the opposition, and cruising to an amazing half-length victory. The Regatta concluded with the customary prizegiving party, during which new friendships were cemented, old friendships re-cemented, lots of photographs taken, all sorts of unachievable promises made, and not a few Asahis consumed. And all that was just in preparation for the celebration dinner party in Shinjuku later on Sunday evening. The trouble with an unlimited drinks deal as part of a set dinner is that some people take full advantage of the opportunity to over-indulge. This was to be no exception, the party eventually splitting up with some heading off to the karaoke bars of Shinjuku whilst others tried their luck mixing beer with darts. At least two records were broken by the Club team during this year s Toda International Masters. Once again, the Men s G Double Sculls crew of Ian Brownlee and David Sorton broke the record of being the oldest crew with an average age of 66 years ever to represent the Club in an overseas regatta. No case to answer here, as the same crew had created the record at the previous year s regatta. The second record was the team s Carbon Footprint with members flying in not only from Hong Kong, but also from Sydney, Chiang Mai and West Sussex. On Monday morning the righteous, and the weather fairy, departed, and the rain returned. 34 Schools Invitational Rowing Regatta WORDS: CHRIS HANSELMAN PHOTOS: NG KONG WAN Rowing n Sunday 15 May, Middle Island was very busy with dinghy races, a corporate dragon boat event and of course the School Invitational Rowing Regatta but I believe the rowers were still in the majority with over 50 students from eight schools, within an age range of 12 to 17, racing the 1.5km course across Deep Water Bay to the Middle Island boat shed. The first year this regatta was held, the weather was blazing hot. Last year saw the race almost cancelled due to the mist in the bay. This year we were third time lucky with perfect conditions. All the boats available at Middle Island were utilised; singles, doubles, quads and coxed fours. This allowed for all students, whatever their ability, to safely participate. There were 25 races in all, and without exception. All were exciting and well fought. As usual with rowing events, one can usually only see the start or the finish, so it could be a little tedious, and unlike the Hong Kong National Championships, Henley Rowing Regatta and other international events which have drone over-head drone cover, the absence of such technology did not deter the usual barrage of parents. No sign of Harrow, who were always competitive in past years but we ll hopefully be seeing them back next year. BUT, we know the Australian International school are now starting rowing. 37 Ahoy Typhoon Season Approaching WORDS: ALAN REID BOATS i20 Marine Limited Tel: / fairlinehongkong@gmail.com Marine Fairline Targa 38 ( 42 knots speed machine) Fairline Squadron 78 Custom he first Typhoon signal of the season has been and gone as I write this. A low pressure area formed in the South China Sea and moved in a Northerly direction to the West of Hong Kong, which saw the Observatory raise the signal as the low pressure passed. So what are we to expect for the remainder of the summer? The Observatory, who have long since replaced the wet piece of sea weed outside their window with a super computer, have said; Up to seven typhoons are expected to hit Hong Kong this year as the Observatory predicts that Hong Kong has a 50/50 chance of transitioning into the La Nina phenomenon in the latter half of The La Nina is responsible for cooler autumns and winters, as well as an increase of tropical cyclones from August to October. The Observatory predicted that four to seven typhoons will sweep into the city from June. However, the number of cyclones is near normal. Dealer in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia for: However they also said recently that; During El Niño, there are fewer tropical cyclones developed in April and May and the genesis positions are usually located further east over the western North Pacific compared to the ENSO-neutral state. Hence, tropical cyclones are unlikely to affect the territory before June. (Who would want be a senior scientific officer in Hong Kong?) Which was of course correct in 2015 and so let s hope that the small low pressure that affected us in May was an anomaly. The Americans, at Climate.gov are saying; El Niño is still hanging around, and it s expected to continue through spring or early summer. So if that is correct, and the La Nina replaces the El Nino we should be in for a few more Typhoon Signals later in the year. Long term members will have seen the regular articles in the Ahoy! regarding preparation of their yachts before typhoons and I do not wish to repeat the information again here. Details are available however, for new members and those who wish to refresh their memories, on the Typhoon Advice page in the Marine section of the Club s website. The article gives some practical suggestions on boat preparation and links to weather sites with information on tropical cyclones. Meanwhile my advice is, if you don t have a piece of wet seaweed, look out for the swarming dragon flies who seem to know a typhoon is coming. 41 Squash WORDS: PAUL DENHAM PHOTOS: PAUL DENHAM AND KOKO MUELLER SQUASH CONTACT The New Courts are Open! After waiting for one and a half years there is great excitement in the section as the new courts were officially opened on 2 June. Squash Convenor and El Presidente Francis Longuepee and Div 15 Convenor and Club stalwart Adrian Pierse were on hand to break in the courts. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond the clubs control the opening was delayed by a few days so we had to postpone the Opening Party we had planned with a few of our friends from some of the other clubs. Winter League 2016/17 Entries are due soon for the next season s winter league. This time we are looking to enter a Masters 1 team in addition to the Div 10 and 15 as well as Masters 3 teams we have entered the last few years. Masters 1 is a very high level of squash and it will be great to have it played at the Club. Internal League Box A: Paul Denham continued his good run and finished undefeated again, though some might say he was lucky to get past Patrick Eng in the game. Sander Holman came second with 22 points with Patrick third on 19. Box B: Darren Jensen won Box B with 21 points, only losing 1 match to Jai Mehta. Jai and Bruno van Der Schueren tied for second with 17 points and all 3 should find themselves in Box A next month. Box C: Max Von Polenitz won 4 matches to take Box C. Vivian Peters was a distant second with 10 points in a box that didn t see too many matches played. Hopefully with the courts being available again we ll see some more action next month. Other Sports Interclub Match: LRC and RHKYC Combined v HKCC For the third year we combined with the LRC to take on the HKCC in an inter-club match with both the LRC and us contributing eight players. There was lots of good squash played and some very tight matches, but unfortunately the HKCC ended up winning them. At the end of the day HKCC won 15-1, with Elliot Froidevaux saving our blushes with a good win. Afterwards, over dinner, it was decided that we should get a trophy for the match so next year we will need to start taking it seriously! Snooker WORDS: DON DAY PHOTO: KOKO MUELLER The snooker table has found a new home in the Pat Loseby Room and whilst members have already started to use it, the official launch will be the final of the current championship between Fred Reid and defending champion Robert Mathieson. The match will take place on 7 July with the warm-up at 1830hrs and the start at 1900hrs. Come and witness some great snooker being played and have a drink at the Main Bar afterwards! We can guarantee you some very high-quality frames! JUL/AUG 2016 AHOY! 41
