Mark Boat Drivers Needed Opening Day is Nearly Here! On May 5, 2007, the BYC will present THE GREAT CARTOONS AFLOAT SHOW, the theme for this year s Opening Day. This is one of the big events of our year, and all BYC-ers should plan to attend. Here is the schedule: 11:00am Bellingham Yacht Club Reception (members and their families only) in the Emerald Bay Catering Dining Room in our Clubhouse (Free) 12:00pm Bellingham Yacht Club Opening Day of Boating Season Ceremony and Blessing of the Fleet in the Emerald Bay Catering Dining Room (open to the public). Bellingham Mayor, Tim Douglas and Whatcom County Executive, Pete Kremen will assist as hosts.

2 1:00pm 3:00pm-? Boats Away (open to all vessels). Boats should stage in the vicinity of the Bellingham Cruise Terminal; the annual Opening Day Boat Parade will pass the review boat stationed at Star Rock Buoy. The Best decorated boat in this year s theme will be awarded the BYC Best Decorated Boat Award and the boat s name will be engraved on our Perpetual Trophy. Bellingham Yacht Club Lounge will be open to members and guests only that evening. (Note: Emerald Bay Catering will be having a private function May 5 afternoon and evening in the dining room.) The Great Cartoons Afloat Show This year, Commodore Al Callery has declared the Opening Day Theme as: The Great Cartoons Afloat Show. We look forward to all kinds of interesting and imaginative costumes. Please make arrangements to get yourself on a fellow member s boat if you have not got one yourself, or ask me for assistance in this matter at Invitations will be sent out to all in-town members, so look forward to receiving yours about mid-month. We are looking forward to having you join us for one of the greatest events of the year. Mark Boat Drivers Wanted Now is the time to get together and obtain a few more Mark Boat certified drivers who help the sailing fleet by tending to the racing marks, and have the fun of zipping around in the Club s great boats. The bigger the pool of drivers we get the less we ll have burnout for those doing it now. Besides, it s FUN and REWARDING. Terry Tavelli has agreed to conduct the certification class again this year, and the plans are for Sunday afternoon, April 22nd (the day after our Club Scrub) starting at 1:00 at the Club. Please let us Terry ( ) or me ( ) know in advance so we know who to expect. The class should run about 2 to 2-1/2 hours, plus a little water time, and covers everything you need to know about operating the Mark Boat and the Bullfrog, and setting up a course. Thank you for your participation and see you on Sunday. Ken Malseed, Fleet Captain THE APRIL CLUB SCRUB IS COMING! Saturday, April 21 at 9:00 a.m. is the date and time for the Spring Club Scrub at our Club. At this semi-annual event we all have a chance to pitch in and make the BYC a nicer place. There are jobs for all interests and aptitudes: Bob Kehoe will have a list of items that need to be cleaned up/painted up/fixed up (everything including gardening, painting, cleaning, plumbing, replacing bulbs, taking out trash, working on boats, and more) and you get to pick the job or two that s your preference and join in with your fellow members to spend about four hours at your Club to save it thousands of dollars. If your expertise requires special tools, bring them. And remember, you ll have fun, too! The picture alongside will give you an example of the classy operation the Building & House Committee runs Put it on your calendar now! 2

3 ALSO NOTE THE PAST COMMODORE S CRUISE APRIL Save the Date Join Immediate Past Commodore Ray Poorman and wife Sally for a Southwestern-themed party! Wear your string tie and cowboy hat, we'll bring the country tunes. Now, who will step forward to teach us all some basic line dancing!?! Dance and potluck Saturday night in the cabana more info is coming as soon as we finish figuring this all out. Thanks to Jason Watson and Tim Mumford for their brainstorming help on this year's theme. If you've never been to Blakely Island Marina, you're in for a treat. It's a beautiful and peaceful protected cove, recently re-opened last summer. Come join us for Ray's last hurrah as Past Commodore. Kids welcome, we WILL have games for the kids on Saturday during the day. Rumors are circulating that there will again be Texas no-limit hold-em poker on Saturday night but with new rules that will see the tournament end before we ve gotten as tired out as we did in 2005 Call Ray or Sally at or him at rpoorman@cssnw.com. COMMODORE S COLUMN Yea!! The rainy winter days are over, now there are rainy March days preparing us for our April showers but the boat s in the yard and very soon racing starts. It seems to me that I will be getting that much needed sailing experience I so desperately need. Your sailing fleet volunteers have the instructions and courses ready, the mark boat is newly equipped by its new sponsor, Blue Sea Systems, and the on the water volunteers are set ( Thanks, Bob Snowball for being Committee Boat! ), all that s needed is waiting until April 4 and the first Numb Bum race. And Dick Rose is here for a Sailing Rules Seminar on Wednesday March 28 th. Dick writes the US Sailing rules we sail by. It will be an evening most interesting Getting Catspaw ready for racing also is getting her ready for Opening Day. Your Opening Day volunteers are well on the way towards making Opening Day 2007 a memorable one. From Prince Valiant to Mary Worth, we will be visited by lots of your favorites. Hopefully you got to enjoy the Boating Seminars put on by Joe Coons and Geoff Chamness. Thank you both for all your efforts. And can you believe the fantastic Saint Patrick s 5? A real high-stepping time! The Spring Club Scrub is on April 21 st, Saturday. This is an excellent opportunity for all members to get together, accomplish some needed enhancements, and then reminisce about what we did while enjoying pizza and beer or soft drinks. Come down and help out, you ll be glad you did. And just a week later we can all meet at Blakeley Island for the Past Commodore s Cruise (the first cruise of the season) on April Yes, your Bellingham Yacht Club is busy, and one of the pleasures of being Commodore is seeing the club that way! Most times I am in the club, either an event is happening or volunteers are planning the next event. We, all of us BYC-ers are having fun, sharing boating, boats, and our love of the water in this beautiful place. Yea! Spring is here! Smooth sailing, Alan Callery, Commodore FROM THE BYC FLEET CAPTAIN The days are starting to get longer now, with the help of the newly scheduled daylight savings time (did you make it?). I ve noticed more people are showing up down at the docks and on their boats. With the change in the weather (?) we soon will be down there with our buckets, sponges and other cleaning materials. It is amazing how dirty our boats can get in a few months. Boy, don t we feel good 3

4 when the engine starts You know, a few of our members in the Sailing Fleet have already been out there with their sailboats competing in the Frostbite Series, and April 4th is the start of the Wednesday night races. If you would like to crew on a boat this year, we probably can find a good match for you. If you would like a good view of the race and are willing to put in a little time out on the Committee Boat (or Mark Boat) helping with the Race Committee, we can fit you in. Dave Steffan can help find you a position with a little help from his friends. Thanks to Bob Snowball for the use of his boat again this year for a great Committee Boat. And, how about those great (and reasonably priced) hamburgers after the races? The grill s offerings are open to the whole membership so don t feel like you have to be a racer, all members can enjoy the spread as well on Wednesday evenings. Our junior fleet is off to a good start. We re getting a little work crew together to help get the boats in shape for our lessons this summer, and Ray Poorman is working diligently to make this a banner year for our youth. Steve Kersey is right behind him getting a good start with our beginner sailing group. Our Power Fleet has transitioned with the addition of our new Power Fleet Captain, Bob Simica. Bob has agreed to take on the position and responsibilities to head up the Reciprocity and Cruising aspect of the Club. Since the Cruise Planning Meeting we had on March 9 th, we ve gotten 10 boats signed up for the Past Commodore s Cruise at Blakely Island on April 27 th -29 th. Call Bob at or me at Don t delay in getting your name in on the list to get yourself a slip for this great cruise. Also, this is a good time to get your name on the list for the next cruise to Sucia Island which will include the radio-controlled model fleet (with Will Lesh), the youth sailors, and a couple of our very own dinghies to sail. Now, my article wouldn t be complete without mentioning The Opening Day of Boating Season 2007 featuring The Great Cartoons Afloat Show. The rundown on this is above, so I would just like to end this article with the: BOATER S BLESSING OF THE FLEET May your prop shaft be saved after hitting that rock, May your bow be rebuilt after ramming your dock, May you find your new watch that fell overboard, May your neighbor quit stealing your slip s power cord, May Lysol mask the musty smell under your berth, May you someday owe less than the damn boat is worth! See you at the Club, Ken Malseed, BYC Fleet Captain MORE ON CLUB DATA GATHERING AND PROCESSING Last month we told you about changes that were underway in the Club s data-sharing processes that had gotten rather chaotic, and you learned of the work by Past Commodore Steve Ross to solve the problem with a whole new system. Well, on Monday March 19 Steve gave a presentation to the Club s data-using committee chairs to get feedback on the process as he had developed it to that point. In a nutshell, his programs were fantastic! Everyone was pleased and excited about his work, but there were nevertheless some good suggestions made as the project nears introduction for testing and review. Thanks, Steve, from all of us! Joe Coons 4

A MEMBER WRITES TO THE JIB SHEET Several of us have recently taken the bartending class either to become a new bartender or to renew an expiring license. You just couldn t help noticing how often Vickie, the instructor, stressed not to over-serve alcohol. Fellow bartenders, we must be diligent about this And fellow members who are not bartenders, PLEASE don t jeopardize our individual licenses or our club s liquor license by over-indulging. We all want to be able to keep our bar open and have fun at our wonderful club ROSTER FINALLY GOING TO THE PRINTERS Joe Coons reports that the BYC Yearbook/Roster is finally going to the printers the first week of April, and should arrive in Members hands around April 15 (you ll have time to read it then since your taxes will be done). The printing was delayed while the Club s Membership Lists were vetted for accuracy (see story above about the Club s data). TOM NIEDERMEYER Tom Niedermeyer, a Member of our Club, died on Feb 26 at the age of 65. He and his beloved wife Deborah had only been members since Tom had a lovely classic Luders 36-foot sail boat to which he was devoted. Please join us in remembering Tom, a new friend who left us too soon. To write to Deborah, her address is: Deborah Niedermeyer, 1448 Roma Rd, Bellingham WA

6 DESTINATION THAILAND Dream of sailing to those far away places, where the water is warm and turquoise, where swimming is accompanied by manta rays and the local cuisine is legendary? Whether you are a boat owner or not, a bareboat charter provides the opportunity for all boaters to cruise and enjoy distant locations. BYC member Alex Marr has made a practice of sailing exotic places around the world using bareboat charter and choosing a specific location each year. For 2007 he will skipper a charter during October in the Andaman Sea around Phuket off the southern coast of Thailand. Anyone interested in that dream should contact him at marra@asme.org or call him at or Our Ship s Store has a Bigger Inventory & Low Prices! What a great job Missy Steffen has been doing with her committee making our BYC Ship s Store a success. You can see all the items on display as you enter the Lounge, and there are order forms and prices at the bar. Then his narrative began: Holy Doodle! I hadn't been out on my Boat for 4.5 months, and that's way too long to be away from Boating for me. I had to do some real thinking just to remember how to work some of my instruments. But it all came back to me in short order. The first thing I had trouble with was my GPS: It wouldn't talk to the laptop. But after a while they became friends, don't ask me how, and everything was working fine. It's magic. I went on down to Des Moines and topped off with fuel for $2.38/gallon (Just my luck it had gone up 7cents overnight and I'm afraid it's going to be going up a bit more, eh.) Then it was down to Wollochet Bay to visit some friends who are the caretakers for the Tacoma YC Out- Station there. Anchored out and rowed ashore to visit. The next day it was down to The Olympia YC to meet up with Gary Parsons who was towing his boat up from Rouge River, Ore. He and I usually do a day cruise in South Puget Sound every year. Then we went on up to Totten Inlet and anchored out in front of some friends house. She's a graduate of the Seattle Art Institute of Culinary Arts, so it's always quite nice to be invited to dinner at their place. Then it was on up to The Shelton YC. We didn't pick the best time of the year to out and about, but it was still better than being tied up to the Dock. We landed at Shelton with about one inch of slush on the dock, but it melted in the afternoon. The next day we went up to Jerryl's Cove State Park, and decided to anchor and raft-up and save the money for the liquor store, eh. The next day it was off to Gig Harbor for two days at the City-Dock (free). Next it was over to the Tacoma YC for one night. Patty came down from Kent on the Sounder Train and Cheryl (Gary's Wife) came up on the Greyhound from Grants Pass. They both arrived within 20 minutes of each other, which worked out great. We all went to dinner at a nice pub two blocks south of the Greyhound Station called Alfredo's. Then it was catch a #11 Bus back to 6

7 the TYC. Pretty easy stuff. Then on up to Bremerton Marina, and Sam on Alluvium came over from Seattle and met up with us. I used Roche Harbor YC reciprocal and Sam &Gary used the Bremerton Boating Club recip dock. Oh, FYI, the South Sound Cruising Club is no longer. That was a nice reciprocal at The Swantown Marina as it was the only convenient place to do laundry that I know of south of Des Moines. Then our three Boats went up to the Poulsbo YC. The next day Sam had to head off to Shilshole and Gary and I went on up to Port Madison, anchored and rafted-up for the night. Then it was over to Shilshole for the rest of us where Gary and Sam helped me replace two 8-D batteries. Actually the project went quite smoothly and we had it all done in three hours and that included the trip to Fisheries to buy the batteries. Then Gary and Cheryl went to Gig Harbor, and later on down to Olympia to put their Boat on the trailer for the return trip to Rouge River. Sam crewed for me and I went into the Lake. Locking through was easy, but it was a bit of tight squeeze in the small Locks. Dropped Sam off at the Ballard City Dock at the foot of 24th NW, and I went down to stay at the Tyee YC for three nights. Then I'll go and stay at the Seattle YC for 2 nights and Patty will be able to take a couple of girlfriends to lunch while I'm there. Then Saturday it's back to the Duwamish YC where I'm keeping the Boat for the winter. Off to Hawaii for a month, and then it's time to get the Boat ready for summer in Alaska! Well, there you have it from Capt.Homie and boss Patty. We'll be looking for you on the water this summer! Captain Homie and Patty [There aren t many clubs fortunate enough to have a traveling reciprocal-using Club rep like Frank Richardson, Captain Homie. Frank, retired from Seattle Metro Transit and a rabid clam, crab and fish assassin, owns a lovely, fine-lined 42 Hardin single Diesel trawler, Caroline, that he cruises all summer around the Northwest as a BYC non-resident Member. Patty, his new wife, is a retired FAA facilities manager and a world-class outdoor sports enthusiast, particularly biking (she has done it across the nation!) and skiing (worldwide), who has won Homie s heart by spoiling him outrageously!] RBAW REPORT The BYC is a supporting member of the Recreational Boating Association of Washington [as every individual member should be as well Ed] and member BJ Ursin represents us at its meetings, and files the following report Boating Activities House Bill 1651 RBAW, NMTA, USPS, USCG, IOBG, and State Parks have been working very hard on Legislative Bill (HB 1651) in Olympia. This bill will provide State money for new boating programs and would create a Boating Activities Account which would help with the following things: New boat-launch ramps and repairs to existing ramps Boater education and safety Boating related law-enforcement activities Boating-related environmental programs A study that assesses the needs of the boating community As of this writing (March7, 2007), the Bill was pulled in the Rules Committee and was on the House Floor Calendar eligible to be voted on by the entire House. I will report next month on the outcome. House Bill 1192 RBAW is against this bill. It strips the State Parks and Recreation Commission of its authority over the Director of State Parks. The bill strips the Commission of the power to appoint the Director of State Parks, and transfer that power- and all the power that goes with it (over budget, operations, and everything else) to the Governor. To the best of our (RBAW) knowledge, Governor Gregoire has not indicated that she wants this authority. In fact, Governor Gregoire has appointed all of the current State Parks and Recreation Commission, and has expressed nothing but support for the Commission, for Rex Derr, and for State Parks employees. Representative Lynn Kessler is the House Majority Leader (that makes her the #2 Democrat in the House) and she introduced this HB. She is joined by Representative Brian Sullivan, the chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources committee. BJ Ursin 7
