"# January Jan 9 Jan 11 Jan 12 Jan 13 Jan 17 Jan 20 January 2007 S M T W T F S Board Meeting Fleet Night (6:30 PM) SSC Regatta Committee General Meeting Social & Cruise Planning Meeting Clubhouse 10:00 AM Junior Committee Installation Dinner 6:00 11:00 PM Commodore s Comments This my first attempt at literature to the membership of the Stockton Sailing Club and I want say thank you to all the members that ran for a position on the board of directors. Those of you that did not come in first are still winners. You were singled out by the nominating committee for your interest and appreciation for the Stockton Sailing Club Those of you that were elected to the. board were elected by a vote of the entire membership because of your understanding of the club, its processes and your desire for the club to continue successfully in the future. It will be my pleasure and honor to serve as commodore in One of the biggest reasons for the Stockton Sailing Clubs continued success is the enthusiastic participation of the many different volunteers. It is through the participation of members that makes this club different and unique. As you walk into the clubhouse mounted on top of the large river map you will see signup lists for the committees that make the club work. Please be generous with your time. The Stockton Sailing Clubs social event of the year has returned to the new facilities of the Stockton Golf and Country Club. That s when the new board is installed (the handcuffs are equipped with a special time release lock), members are recognized for their super human accomplishments during the previous year, we throw up our heels to the music, converse wittily with fellow sailors over our exploits, and discuss (possibly over an adult beverage) what the other guy did wrong when he was T boned. Speaking of bones, the awards banquet is where one of the most prized trophies of the night is presented to the deserving winner. Feb 8 Feb Feb 13 Feb 16 Feb 21 Regatta Committee Sweetheart Cruise (see page for details) Board Meeting General Meeting Junior Committee The Friday night dinners were a great success last year and the momentum will continue again year this year. Share some of you great recipes with dinners which well savored the membership. Remember you prepare the entrée, the salad and potato bar is assembled by the club steward and served by a different club member. The club steward will contact you several days ahead to assist with purchasing the ingredients for the grate dinner you are preparing. Thank you again, Mike Stefani Commodore SSC

4 STOCKTON SAILING CLUB UNAPPROVED BOARD MINUTES December 12, 2006 Commodore Humphreys called the meeting to order. Board Members present: William Humphreys, Mike Stefani, Tom Lueck, Peggy Feakes, Nancy Farnum, Abe Ayala and Rick Gibson. Board Members absent: Chris Corbin, Sam Dameron, Bob Doscher and Mike Bennett Others in Attendance: Susan McLain, Paula Almaas, Hank Colberg and Peter Hine. Agenda: Motion to approve proposed agenda with item 3b eliminated: Stefani/Lueck (M.S.P.) Minutes: Motion to approve November minutes as presented. Leuck/Feakes (M.S.P.) Financial Statements: The Board was presented with a written financial statement dated October 31, 2006, which the Board reviewed and discussed Motion to approve October 31st financial report. Feakes/Farnum (M.S.P.) Correspondence: 1. Sam Dameron sent a letter of thanks for the flowers from the Club. 2. Joan Jensen sent a thank you letter for guest privileges extended to her by the Club. 3. Wes Wallstrom sent announcement of the PICYA 2007 regatta calendar.. 4. The Golden Gate Tall Ships Society Privateer Lynx sent a letter to the Club advising that a ship will be in Stockton in July 2007 and requested dock space at the Stockton Sailing Club. The letter was discussed and the Club will respond o get specific dates and details to accommodate the arrival and stay of the ship. A club dinner may be planned. 5. Letter of resignation from John Dorothea. Since Mr. Dorothea has dues paid through December 31, 2006, the resignation will be effective as of that date unless rescinded. 6. Letter from Kathy Richardson requesting a Cruising Membership. Request granted with the provision that the member would no longer be eligible for the discount for boat storage. (continued next column ) (continuation of Board Minutes ) 7. David and Rose Eberhard sent two Yacht Club burgees, which will be displayed in the Clubhouse. 8. After discussion with Commodore Humphreys, Jim Warfield sent to the Club the certificate of ownership for the trailer and his Etchells, Final Final. The boat and trailer come with sails and are in excellent condition. It is Mr. Warfield s specific desire that the Club sell Final Final in order to raise money to purchase new or newer Flying Jr. boats for the Junior Program. The existing FJ s need to be replaced and Mr. Warfield s gift is very generous and especially welcome. Old Business: 1. Dock Pilings: The pilings on D Dock need to be extended and the Board has already authorized the expenditure of money to pay for the project. Tom Lueck will follow through. New Business: Paula Almaas, Peter Hine and Hank Colberg were given bouillons as incoming board members. The board discussed long-time members Harley Tinkle and Wes Wallstrom. Harley Tinkle has been an active member and racer for approximately 40 years. Throughout that time and even recently, he has sailed and raced with many of the club s junior members. Inviting young members to crew on his Windmill, challenging other dingy sailors to compete against him and his sportsmanship on and off the water deserve recognition. Wes Wallstrom is also a long-time board member who deserves recognition. Wes had been especially active as a representative of PICYA and has volunteered countless hours to the Stockton Sailing club and the PICYA. To a significant degree, Wes has put out Club on the map with other yacht clubs and associations. For their extraordinary service to the Stockton Sailing Club and the fraternity of yachting, motion to grant Harley Tinkle and Wes Wallstrom lifetime Club memberships. Ayala/Stefani vote unanimous Facilities Manager s Report: Susan McLain submitted a written report which the Board discussed. Slip vacancies are a 27 down one from November. (continued on page 5) $

5 (continuation of Board Minutes from page 4) Adventures in Paradise The Drums Are Starting Bipeds! I will never understand them. Whether they say they are racers, cruisers or just sailors they all think they are related to superman, particularly when it comes to the phrase can jump the tallest building in a single bound. It seems that a few of our wayward friends were basking in the southern sun and enjoying each others witty repartee (friends from other vessels were visiting). After several hours of conversation, delicious rations and a few adult beverages, the time had come for the guests to depart. Some were going to return to their vessels, some were returning back to their homes and some were returning back to their jobs. Ever the gracious host, one of the bipeds offered to ferry the departees back to shore on the auxiliary yacht. Upon arriving at the docking facilities, the debonair captain, cautiously approached the landing area and leaped, in a single bound to the hoped for landing. Does the term equal and opposite reaction come to mind. Yep, that s what occurred. And the biped because of the neglected, underdeveloped and atrophied upper limbs required personal assistance from another biped to climb onto a floating structure. After looking over his shoulder to see if anyone else had observed the mishap, (one of my foreign operatives did) the biped safely accomplished the transfer of cargo. The season has changed. The war drums are back. Their beating has commenced. Sailors are again approaching their beautiful sailing vessels and are not only seriously inspecting the vessels and making lists of needed refurbishments, but are actually actively pondering the repairs of their fine and loyal vessels. The thoughts of conquering heroics are coming to the forefront. New tactics are being formulated as you read this. The rumors are being fed to the system. Facilities Manager s Report: (continued) Animal Crackers, a Cal 30, will be sold at a lien sale. Susan McLain will schedule the date. Other boats that were subject to a pending lien sale have been reclaimed. Carr Electric has completed its project with minor follow up to be done. Total cost is approximately $242, The club had projected a $250, expense. B Dock has several broken electric outlets. B Dock has 20 amp service and 20 amp plugs will be replaced as needed until the dock is replaced and 30 amp service can be provided. Edgar has been servicing the new Boston Whaler and motor. Edgar also wants to purchase a used roto rooter machine for the Club, because it appears that tree roots are invading sewer lines and a Roto Rooter service needs to be called every few months. Other normal maintenance and repairs are being made to the docks and in and around the clubhouse. Committee Reports: Social and Cruise: New Year s Eve Paty is scheduled at the Clubhouse at a cost of $10.00 per person. Junior Sailing: The grant request for LTS is pending. S.P.O.C.: Nancy Farnum reported on the need to continue S.P.O.C. by nest year s board and possibly make it an ad hoc committee. Motion to give Susan McLain Christmas bonus as reported. Lueck/Farnum M.S.P.. Meeting adjourned Bartholomew Negro %

The letter specifically references the 2 micron elements for the 500 Turbine Series, which have traditionally been a dark brown color. That color was changed to tan a couple of years ago. Of importance is the fact that the configuration of the filter was also changed such that, in older filter housings (produced prior to January 1996), the new filter elements do not fit properly, seating lower in position within the filter housing than intended, with the holes in the center pipe lying above the top of the filter element, allowing fuel to bypass the filter element and proceed on to the engine unfiltered. The same problem exists for the 10 and 30 micron elements. All the filter elements are now tan in color, with lettering on the top clearly designating 2, 10, or 30 micron filters. Racor supplies a rubber spacer free of charge, which slides down over the center tube of the filter housing below the filter element, installed permanently, to avoid this problem. They are available through Racor Technical Support ( ). They say that a substitute would be a one inch piece of 5/16 inch ID fuel hose slid down over the pipe. -Peggy Feakes

I want to take this time to thank everyone on the committee and all those who have volunteered to sponsor events for all their efforts working to have such a successful year. Linda Armanino and Laurie Warner have given over and over of their time and talent. Beverly Sheehy, Jo Ann Eggert, John and Kathy Foppe, Abe and Janet Ayala and many others have always stepped in when we need assistance for events. Thank you so much for all the time and effort all of you have given this year. I know I have not named everyone but I want each and everyone of you to know how much you are appreciated when you volunteer. Your actions are what make our Club the wonderful place it is. As we move into the New Year, I am looking forward to working again with all of you to have another successful year. We will have meetings on a Tuesday evening starting in February. We will have a meeting on January 13, 2007, in the clubhouse at 10:00. We will be planning the events for the year so I hope to see all of you there. Again, thank you for all your efforts spent working for the club. Gail Gradle Social and Cruise &

9 UPCOMING BLUE WATER CRUISE NEWS At the Blue Water Cruise reunion on Saturday, December 22, it was decided that, in 2007, we would again go south to Monterey Bay. The cruise will begin on Saturday, Sept. 15, and continue for the next week. In addition, there was interest in a 2 nd cruise going north to Bodega/Tomales Bays. If there are enough members that want to do that to organize a cruise, it would continue for the next week (begin the following Saturday, September 22). Of course, it wouldn t be required that you go on the first week s trip to Monterey to head up to Bodega and Tomales Bays, since in coming up north from Monterey, on the way to Bodega, the group would pass through San Francisco Bay. NEW YEAR S EVE AT THE STOCKTON SAILING CLUB There was also a lot of interest in a stop at Moss Landing, which would be most convenient by adding a day to the trip, so that we d return to SF Bay on Saturday, September 22 rather than the traditional Friday, if the Moss Landing stop is in the final schedule we decide on. Tides at the Golden Gate for Saturday, Sept. 15: Max ebb knots Slack 1021 Max flood knots And for Saturday, September 22: Max flood knots Slack 1130 Max ebb knots Slack 1700 These tides would be OK for getting out of the Gate, but coming back in the next weekend would have us bucking the ebb, as we did in The forecast tides would also be OK for an entrance to Tomales on Sunday, Sept. 23 or Monday, Sept. 24. Snowbird Maria More information after planning meetings to beheld (likely sometime around February or March), but these dates are OK o schedule vacations around, if need be. See you out the gate!
