6 First of all, a big thank you to Kathy and John Foppe for hosting the Cold Turkey Cruise to Rio Vista. I m sure they all had a great time. December is one of our big event months with the Lighted Boat Parade on the 5th and the Champagne Christmas Party, hosted by the Board, on the 12th. And, of course, the BIG event will be the New Year's Eve Party. We have a terrific DJ (Chad Johnson) lined up to keep you dancing from 9pm till the wee hours. There will be a Champagne celebration at midnight with the champagne we selected at the November general meeting. If you weren t there you missed a fun time. We all tasted 3 different bubblys and then voted, with the Freixenet Brut an overwhelming favorite. We re asking that you bring an hors d'oeuvre or desert to share. Cost will be $15 per person and you can sign up at the club or call me, Jim Cahill, at On the first, be sure to attend the Cobweb Breakfast and get your Speedo out for the Polar Plunge! Tom says he s ready and is looking for you to join him! This month s cruising suggestion is what I call the Grand Cruise. Located on Steamboat Slough is the Grand Island Mansion which is a unique destination. My Grandmother, who emigrated from Sweden in 1906, lived in Courtland as a young girl. She told me about the rivalry between two successful farmers in the area who tried to out-do each other with displays of their wealth. Obviously, the one who built the Mansion won. It is described as the largest private estate in Northern California and boasts a fabulous ballroom lined with gilded mirrors, a bowling alley, theatre, tennis courts that are used as the helicopter landing pad and more bedrooms than I can count. You can enjoy Sunday brunch as well as rent out the facility for weddings or other events. Plus they have a 300 foot dock where they keep a very large yacht. The trip to the Grand Island Mansion is a long journey and the current especially during the spring runoff. And, be sure to watch out for the cable ferries that cross the river you don t want to tangle with them! Check out the destination at and, if you go, be sure to call ahead to see about docking and read your charts for depths and hazards. This is a journey that you ll remember for a long time and I hope you try it. Jim Cahill Page 6 Social And Cruise The Cold Turkey Cruise was a great trip this year. For those who missed it, try us next year. It s a great way to share your leftover turkey, and fun with friends. Moonshadow left Stockton Sailing Club at 8:20 am on Friday November 27, as we figured we would be bucking the tides the whole trip. The weather was cold but the sun eventually came out. We motor-sailed with our new self tacker and arrived at Delta Marina at about 2pm. Greeting us were Darrell and Gloria Magnus of Bailidor and Jerry Schwartz and Frank Wolfe of Kathleen. Dinner was at 6pm with potluck dishes brought by all, and the turkey was cooked on sir Leansalot during their sail to Rio Vista. 10 boats and 2 RVers enjoyed the cruise. An Improv was going on at The Point after dinner, put on by the Rio Vista High School Drama Club and several sailors were there to cheer them on. Saturday morning, 18 people walked to Raul s Striper Café, enduring the mph winds that had also arrived during the night. This wind was a potential element to cancelling the Turkey Regatta. But, remote sail boats were brought out during calmer moments and the races were on. Overall winner was Tom Lueck, 1st to Budge Humphreys, 2nd to Al Farnum and tied for third were Don Doe and Roger Stevenson. The munchies contest was held in the patio area rather than on the dock due to the wind. 1st place went to Kathleen Stevenson for her meatballs, 2nd to Mary Ann Brown for her roll-ups and 3rd to Elizabeth Johnson for her antipasta. (Perry and Elizabeth joined the sailors for the munchies and then for dinner a The Point.). Dinner at the Point was enjoyed by 40 members and their families. A drawing for a haulout at Ladd s was won by Nancy Farnum. Sunday morning was crisp but clear and Moonshadow took off at 7:55 am, while the rest of the group went for breakfast. They had a great time sailing home. The winds were brisk but the sun was out and all was right with the world. Kathy & John Foppe
