As I write this it s the last day of winter and a storm is heading our way. It s days like this that I think of sailors of yore, working the sails, pulling the lines, watching for the unfavorable conditions that might make or break the ship. The crew pulls their watch, maybe its stopped raining and maybe not. There is no going back to the dock and waiting out the storm. It s a means and career that continues to this day. I m not sure which is worse to sail in light airs or to start with an iffy weather report only to have it blow out of control. I can recollect an adventure that Pete and I had one weekend on the Bay. We had a great fish dinner at Scott s in Oakland. It was early afternoon and the winds on the estuary were feeling pretty good. We said goodbye to our hosts and shoved off for Treasure Island where we berth Tonic, a 24 Islander Bahama. This day, the fact that we could handle it ourselves was going to pay off. As we left the estuary and started in the open water towards TI, the wind had really picked up. I had never seen the bay with rollers and the tops blowing off. If it wasn t for some sun shining, I would have been more scared. We were motor sailing, but the small Johnson engine was cavitating. It was decided that the sails had to come down. Pete went forward and wrestled with the storm jib. Fabric and wind can be quite the contender. As I watched him, and kept the bow into the wakes, unknown to us our MOB went overboard from the stern pulpit. By the time he came back into the cockpit, the MOB was hard to see. Pete said we would have to turn around and get it. You can t leave a MOB bobbing around and not retrieve it. It was my worse nightmare, having to turn and be parallel with those waves for any period of time. Needless to say, we made it and did a fine job of a MOB maneuver on a MOB!!! It may not be a tale of yore or movie material, but it was harrowing none the less. Every one of us has a tale to tell all and I think we should be proud that we are here to tell them. So three cheers for spring, it s time to celebrate life.
