5 December, 2018 MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE Dear Hawaii Yacht Club members and guests, I feel a tug on my heart as I sit down to write this article as HYC Commodore, after stepping up to the plate to accept this position amidst many challenges. Since I have the privilege to appoint my successor, and was leaving for a brief vacation, I decided to appoint Mr. Jim Schmit as HYC Commodore in my absence. Jim Schmit is a long-standing member of HYC, who has also served on the BOG. After I left, Jim told me that he was very eager to get things going asap, so I will gladly pass on the gavel to Jim now, instead of waiting till the end of the year. The present BOG has given him their blessings, so that makes Jim s appointment as commodore official as I step down to enable him to get off to a flying start in Many members and previous staff commodores alike are very pleased with my appointment of Jim, whom I have vetted very carefully. Jim will choose his own vice commodore. I will be giving my farewell speech at the next AGM; I wish Jim all the very best as HYC Commodore! Now that the commodore issue has been taken care of, I would like to share a bit of news from Sri Lanka. One of my aims when I headed to Sri Lanka was to find greener pastures for retirement, but another was to make our club s presence known in my mother country. Hence, as HYC Commodore, I met up with Royal Colombo Yacht Club Commodore Mr. Hans, who hosted me at his club. It was a very happy occasion Mr. Hans and I exchanged burgees and I exchanged pleasantries with many members, accompanied by many gulps of the ol brew. I also represented HYC at a happy and proud occasion when the US Coast Guards gifted a Cutter to the Sri Lankan Navy. It was a proud moment for me as I took part in all the pomp and pageantry of the handover ceremonies at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Sand Island, Honolulu. Here I am with the Sri Lankan Navy Commander, who is personal friend of mine. Next to him is the Captain of the ship. There are 140 Sri Lankan Navy personnel who are being trained to take the ship to Sri Lanka in Feb A proud moment, indeed! Commodore Pieris and Royal Colombo Yacht Club Commodore Mr. Hans With that I say Aloha nui loa! Sohan Pieris Commodore HYC Commodore Pieris with the Sri Lankan Navy Commander 5

7 December, 2018 Blessing for the new Galley by the Sea- Sunday, Dec. 4, 2018 Mahalo to all the volunteers that made this happen. A special "Mahalo" To Andy Sexton and JoJo Washburn. We are so fortunate to have JoJo's Kitchen as our Galley by the Sea. Let's be sure we all offer encouragement and respect for all they are trying to do to make a successful restaurant! 7

8 HAWAII YACHT CLUB BULLETIN MARKETING Aloha, Happy Holidays! It s been a busy year at HYC. The Marketing and Communications Committee has built an exciting following on social media. We couldn t be more pleased with the response to all the fun events we provide as a club. Our public Facebook page has almost 2,200 followers (compared to WYC s 1,300 and KYC s 921 followers). We are engaged and we are killing it! So, we know how to reach out and share our excitement. It s now up to our members to show potential new members a great experience when they come to the club. It s time to convert these potential members to actual members. We must act while the iron is hot. Everyone should know how to hand out a membership application, then follow up to be sure the potential members have been contacted, invited back and actually join. Commodore Pieris ran a great program at Gate Watch with temporary membership cards. Those temporary members, if they had a great experience, should become Social Members, at the very least. We need a team of Gate Watch members who can share the responsibility of recruiting members (and be the happy, first impression of our great club.) This momentum can happen, but not if we assume it s someone else s responsibility. Do you have a reply for when someone says, Why do I need to become a member? I can just come in as a guest forever.? Membership committee needs volunteers to help turn this statement around. Nikki wants to hear your input about what you like (and don t like) and will share that with the Board of Governors. If we, as a club, provide fun programs, a great restaurant, a lively bar and mutual support in good and bad times for our members, then we have a lot to communicate about joining vs. being a guest 100 times in a year! As I work on our social media, post to our website and do our twice weekly e-blasts, I am made very aware that we do a lot of fun parties and events. All this is part of your membership experience; we celebrate together. This club may not be perfect, but once you become active you know we have value way beyond the price of your membership. Let us start a new, vibrant chapter in our club s history in Commit to embrace and embody the Aloha Spirit. Commit to embrace and embody the Corinthian Spirit. Come to the Birthday parties, come to Game Night, come to the Rum Tastings, Wine Tastings, and the Inspired Speaker events. Cheer on our HYC boats on Friday nights. Join a NEW committee. Get on board about Transpac. Tell all your friends we have the best restaurant in Waikiki. If we all decide we can do this, we can! 9 December, 2018 SHIPS STORE This month at the Ships Store we have new shirts celebrating our weekly Friday night sail races! Available now in this new design are unisex dri-fit UV blocking shirts and women s tank tops. Also, because we would like to get even more new stock into the store, we will be having a close-out sale on older items for the entire month of December! Finally, as a reminder please submit design ideas for the upcoming Transpac race shirts, as we want to have the best design possible for this important race! There will be a prize awarded to whomever comes up with the best idea. Stop by anytime during office hours to shop, or most Friday nights from 6-9 p.m. As always, if you would like to volunteer to help us at the shop, would like to make any distance orders for merchandise or just have any questions or concerns, send us an at: shipstore@hawaiiyachtclub.org. 12 HAWAII YACHT CLUB BULLETIN MEMBERSHIP Aloha Hawaii Yacht Club Membership, Transparency is about information. It is about the ability of the receiver to have full access to the information he wants, not just the information the sender is willing to provide. Transparency embodies honesty and open communication because to be transparent someone must be willing to share information when it is uncomfortable to do so (Gebler, 2011). Well, this report will be just that! First of all, here are the membership numbers: Regular 157 Senior 54 Social 36 Life 10% 87 Life 0% 11 Military 12 Intermediate 3 Junior 18 Associate 309 Many of these numbers are down, and with regard to our longtime members, these statistics represent a drastic change from over 10 years ago. We need new members, and the legacy of this club cannot survive on a membership of which the average age is 65. This is a fact. Our future is in the intermediate and junior members, who, if you look at the numbers, are the least represented. We have a challenge before us; share with me your thoughts re. solutions and action plans. Since the vote on the assessment fee, some members have ed their concerns and thoughts to me. The following concerns are well stated and need to be addressed: 1. Standards of Behavior : behavior and attitude should be kind and respectful. Anything less should not be tolerated. 2. HYC needs a galley that is dependable and constant: membership wants someone who is consistent, reliable and serves tasty food. Fortunately for Hawaii Yacht Club, we have found that person in Chef JoJo! While I understand that this discussion is galley-related, it behooves our membership to support our galley. Any new endeavor must have a supportive team to encourage success. Transitions and changes can be challenging, yet as we support our galley, we support our club. So, on Fridays, (kindly) eat upstairs. 12

13 December, 2018 MEMBERSHIP (CONT.) New members inducted to Hawaii Yacht Club include: Ashlie Lelie (Regular Membership), who recently bought M/v Cracker Jack. Jeff Villinger (Regular Membership), who races on Friday nights. Charles Mike Phillips and his wife Diana have been reinstated to Regular Membership. Let s welcome and support our new members and Hawaii Yacht Club! Aloha y Mahalo, Nikki Deheart Membership Committee Gebler, D. (2011) Transparency is a key to performance. 15 December, 2018 JUNIOR SAILING The Hawaii Yacht Club Sailing Banquet was held on Oct. 28 and the sailors had a great time. Thanks to Ron Uryga and Steve and Tracy Eder for a great evening. The games and opportunity to go sailing made it a nice event. The Magic Island Sailing Foundation helped to make the evening special. We had the last day of the fall sailing session on Nov. 17 with a potluck; some of the parents came down for a sail as well. There are eleven new sailors that completed the program and we hope they will return in the spring. New adult sailor Curt Feldman is learning new skills in the Cal 20 and he recently bought his own boat; it s an Albin Vega 27 with great potential. At the time of writing, upcoming events for sailing include the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association Laser Clinic on Dec. 1 and 2 (open to all ages) and the El Toro Clinic on Jan. 12 and 13. The laser and el toro clinics both have three focuses: boat speed, boat handling, and racing tactics. Many participants have gone on to national championships and college sailing teams. 19 December, 2018 CRUISING AND VOYAGING SOCIETY Greetings HYC Members, Our meeting last Tuesday, Nov. 6, was a great hit at the club. HYC Staff Commodore Tony Miller and Lyn Silva gave a very interesting and informative presentation about their trip aboard S/V Ikaika sailing around the Washington state coast. Tony and Lyn had some interesting times, and a few tense moments, due to mechanical issues, weather, wind and motoring. They also got to enjoy tranquil bays and waterways as they transited beautiful and serene bays, stopping at local marinas and meeting new friends along the way. We thank them for sharing about their great trip with us. Tom Sullivan also gave a short talk about his trip aboard the USCG training tall ship Eagle. It was also a very good presentation. Tom is very knowledgeable about the training ship Eagle and its rich history; he had spent time aboard the Eagle as a younger man and then returned as a senior crewman. The funniest parts of Tom s talk revolved around former HYC Staff Commodore Frank Lange, who was also aboard the Eagle for both of Tom s trips. Thanks to all involved and to all the people who provided the pot luck, which included a full turkey dinner and all the fixings. It was a great night. I hope you did not miss that meeting but you re welcome to come join in our next meeting. We always try to have something of interest regarding cruising. If you (or someone you know) have a cruising adventure to share, please contact us via phone or text: or Last month, the authors of the Cruising Guide to the Hawaiian Islands, Carolyn and Bob Mehaffy, called on the Cruising and Voyaging Society. You can place orders for the updated 3rd edition of their book by phone or or online: Lyn and Tony speaking at CVS Potluck Paradise Cay Publications: / orders@paracay.com Mention HYC membership and get 45% off the cover price (net price $27.67 plus shipping $6.55)! Bulk orders preferred! Our next regular meeting is Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the lower galley. Our next Sunday Brunch is coming up on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 9:30 a.m. at the upper galley. Please come out to support our group, our club, and our galley. All are welcome! Fair Winds and Following Seas. 21 December, 2018 MAHALOS! Veterans Day recap I asked for volunteers and they came all the way from the Big Island! Many thanks to Mike Bishop and his two sons for all their help. Vanna and Sam (new members) and Nicole did all the clean-up. We also had Bill Biddle - welcome home Bill! Of course, the biggest thank you goes to all our veterans for their hard work to make sure we have all stayed safe. THANK YOU!!!!!!! Patti Naiyoke A Volunteer Special thanks to Leslie Sullivan for organzing the big clean up of our board room! The team: Tom Sullivan, Ron Pestel and George Machado all did a great job! Wow, that was a lot of work and it looks great. Amazing what can happen when members pitch in to make HYC better!!! On a fun note: the clean-up team found an original stock certificate dated August 1, 1902!! 2121
