1 Flotilla 65, 1 st District Northern Volume 4, No. 3 - April 2012 Flotilla 65 MSO Patrol Teams Bid Farewell to MST1 Nathan Pierce by Mary Baumgartner, FC On May 11, 2012 members of Flotilla 65 MSO Patrol teams joined together to bid farewell to Nate and his family. Nate arrived in New Bedford in 2009 and immediately settled in. Weekly we got to interact with Nate as we arrived to do our patrol assignments. Nate always took care of us; especially in the winter! He would go out to the garage and get the patrol vehicle and have it warmed up for us! He is a southern boy with lots of charm and personality. Farewell Party Photo by MST2 Lindsay Logreco Nate was very interested in the Auxiliary and all that we had to offer. When I discussed an up-coming Marine Safety Day we were doing, Nate jumped in and offered to build our Officer Snook Environmental game for us. He did a great job! Then he offered to join us and play the game with the public at our safety day. This was shortly after his twins were born he just brought them along! Nate and his family arrived in New Orleans for their next assignment and are settling in. We wish them well! MST1 Nathan Pierce and LT. Eric RunyonPhoto by Mary Baumgartner, FC

Thank you, Paul G. Sadeck, Finance Officer Nautical Heritage Events ~ Fairhaven Bicentennial ~ 6 and 7 July 2012 by David Mitchell Two historic vessels will visit Fairhaven s Bicentennial celebration July 6 and 7; schooner Bowdoin and motor vessel Tracker. Both vessels were designed in Fairhaven in the early 1900s. Arriving in Fairhaven Friday afternoon, the vessels may participate in a marine parade from Butler Flats Light thru the barrier and blessing of the fleet on Saturday at 11:30 am. They plan open decks for public tours from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon. The story of Bowdoin's arctic explorations and purchaser Donald MacMillan's life will be presented by MacMillan biography author Mary Morton Cowan on Friday evening July 6 at 7:00 pm at 80 Middle Street, Fairhaven - the Acushnet River Safe Boating Club building. Mrs. Cowan will bring copies of her book to sell and sign. Cowan s presentation is sponsored by the ARSBC and U. S. Coast Guard Flotilla 65. The public is admitted free to all events. Access for those with disabilities: ARSBC requires one step and going on decks may require steps, short ladders or ramps. Fairhaven s Bicentennial celebration Nautical Heritage events focus on the contributions of William H. Hand Jr., a premier marine architect of the early 1900 s, whose business was at 80 Middle Street, Fairhaven. Many of his firm s drawings are now in the MIT museum. Both visiting vessels (ranging from 65 to 91 years old) were designed by Mr. Hand. Each has its own interesting history which will be detailed by current owners at the open decks times. Tracker, a 42-ft motor vessel and Mr. Hand s last personal fishing vessel, was restored and now hails from Martha s Vineyard - a few miles from Mr. Hand s fish house in Menemsha. Among other missions, she evaluated a novel propulsion system. Berthing is planned behind 80 Middle Street. (Continued) Vessel Tracker (formerly named Mary Ellen) late 1940 s photo from MIT museum. 3 Bowdoin, an 88-ft schooner now a training vessel for Maine Maritime Academy, provided life-altering experiences to generations of young men who accompanied arctic explorer MacMillan over decades of contact and voyages of discovery in the far north. She was designed by Hand for the specific need of arctic exploration: modest size for shoal waters and especially thick hull for encounters with ice and hazards of uncharted areas. She survived repeated freezing into ice and groundings. Schooner Bowdoin s bow, Castine, Maine summer Photo by D. Mitchell Vessel Tracker (formerly named Mary Ellen) late 1940 s. Photo from MIT museum. Hear about Bowdoin s history at a presentation Friday July 6 at 7:00 pm at 80 Middle Street. At Maine Maritime Academy Bowdoin continues to give unique adventures to students - including the crew who sail her from Castine, Maine to Fairhaven. Berthing is planned at the Steamship Authority repair facility near the corner of Main and South Street. 7 5 June 2012 First of Three Classic Vessels Visits Fairhaven for Bicentennial Text and photos by D. Mitchell Guildive approaches Palmer Island Light to visit Fairhaven 3 June Built in 1934, the vessel Guildive visited Fairhaven Sunday, June third for the town s bicentennial. Guildive is the first of three vessels by early 20th century Fairhaven designer William H. Hand Jr. planning to visit town this summer as part of Nautical Heritage events during the bicentennial year. The other two schooners Bowdoin and the fishing boat Tracker - plan to be here 7 July and will be open to the public - details will soon be available. Due to marina restrictions, Guildive s visit was not public, but guests who saw her enjoyed boarding the classic vessel and meeting Captains Kate Kana and Zander Parker. Guildive was part way thru her seasonal relocation from Maryland to Maine and may visit this fall on the way south. Watch for information about remaining visits this Bicentennial summer. Guildive crew prepares to dock in Fairhaven. Captain Kate Kana, left, and Fairhaven resident Anne Mozzone, right, meet in Guildive s pilothouse. Captain Kate Kana, Barb MItchell and Linda Meredith. 9 Boat Safety Week By Ed Herman The sun was out, the temperature was rising and the crowd was getting bigger. It was May 19 at the Fairhaven Boat ramp and the PV/VE day was off to a grand start. Members of Flotilla 65 Ed Herman, Jeff Santos, Ron Lacasse, Mike Mulroy,Terry Meredith, Peter Wahl, and Dan Pope were on hand to inspect several boats, and conversed with a number of adults about the Coast Guard Auxiliary program. During the event a number pamphlets were given out to interested adults and coloring books were given to the children. There was a great turnout and all seemed to enjoy the day. You're Invited! Friday July 6, 2012 at 7 PM in the 80 Middle St classroom. Presentation on Arctic Explorations of Donald MacMillan, purchaser of Schooner Bowdoin from 80 Middle St marine architect William H. Hand Jr. Bowdoin was specifically designed for MacMillan's use in the arctic. On Saturday you will be able to tour Bowdoin and three other Hand vessels visiting Fairhaven. Presenter is Mary Morton Cowan, MacMillan biographer, who will also have books to sell and sign. Mrs. Cowan often presents to adults and children so bring interested young people too. Mrs. Cowan's presentation is fully sponsored by Acushnet River Safe Boating Club and US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla-65. Bowdoin's crew from Maine Maritime Academy is expected to attend the presentation so you may meet them too. High school students interested in MMA might come and learn about the academy. Refreshments will be served. This is a Fairhaven Bicentennial Committee event and is FREE and open to the public. Need more information? Contact Dave Mitchell or at dwm5126@gmail.com. 10 2012 Patrols Under Way text and photos by D. Mitchell Visibility quickly improved so that most of the harbor was visible. Mitchell photographed pier facilities for this summer s visiting vessels. We observed fishing boat and fuel barge activity, (photos from top down) hailed AmyJulie with skipper Sadeck and crew Baumgartner, saw Mass Martime s vessel Ranger heading out, and met Buzzard s Bay Rowing (yes, they row all winter). First robin, docks in, boat launches, parking lot regained, beautiful plants along the building, sidewalk salt leaves the showers - all are signs of our new boating season. Here s a photo record of Flotilla 65 s first safety patrol of the year. Thursday 24 May arrives FOGGY. At 0745 visibility was all the way to Crow Island. Coxswain Bob Joseph gave visibility a 6 (poor rating) on the risk assessment form and discussed the situation with eager crew: from left in photo, Orrin Andersen (Flotilla 63), Marguerite Sullivan (63), Greg Weider (65), Bob Joseph (65), Jane Ulewicz (63) and, behind the camera, Dave Mitchell, (65). All else was fine, and it looked like improvement was likely, so Chloe Rose and crew started patrol inside New Bedford harbor. Near the barrier we could see Butler Flats Light and left the harbor. Two barges and a crane on the Fairhaven side of the opening are in place and the water has been removed from that side s swinging gate for repair of components normally submerged. Repairs may be completed on both sides this summer. Boaters should take extra care because visibility is more restricted - even without fog. To the right, crew Sullivan and Ulewicz near Butler Flats Light out of sight of land. After circling thru Clark s Cove and Apponagansett Bay, we headed across toward Black Rock thru varying fog conditions until Joseph asked, Shall we head for Cuttyhunk? The response was Why not? (Continued)
11 Arriving at nearly empty Cuttyhunk Basin (see interesting launch, resident fauna, and sated crew below), we enjoyed a fine lunch, remodeled and cleaned sanitary facilities, and now perfect weather before returning to New Bedford and securing at about 2 PM. Above, Sullivan notices the weather clear around us, though a dark band of fog lays on the sea beneath bright blue sky and cirrus clouds. If you are interested in on-the-water patrols, join Boat Crew Academy or, if you are already qualified, sign up for a patrol. Get more information from FSO-OPS Lee Baumgartner.
12 A Message from the deck of the ARSBC President Hello Everyone; I hope you are all enjoying this boating season. I have heard that if you are a fisherman that there are a lot of Stripers and Blues available to be caught. I would like to thank everyone who stored their boat in the yard for leaving it nice and clean so that we wouldn't have any problems with the EPA. We have a club where most of the work and repairs are done by the members. I would like to remind everyone that it is not a yacht club that charges $75 or more per foot and has a full time maintenance crew. I have received a number of calls on small problems that should be repaired by the person making the call. Minor problems need to be fixed by the member. If you can't fix it, you should find someone that is around and ask for help. If there are parts needed and no one is around to get them from the container, buy them, give the receipt to the treasurer and he will pay you for them. If there is a serious problem, such as an electrical problem, then contact me and we'll decide how to fix the problem. If for instance there is a water leak, and the water is shut off until it gets fixed, no one is to turn the water on until it is fixed. The water has been found turned on, after being shut, and running into the harbor. That water the club is paying for, it is expensive and should not be wasted. I hope everyone will continue to have a great, and safe, boating season. Thanks, Bob Parker for more information use: Safe Harbor is a publication of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 65, New Bedford, Massachusetts.
