I welcome the challenge, learning experiences and comments (I guess that includes criticism too) which accompany my new job. It was Aristotle who said, One must learn by doing the thing, for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try. With that said, I present my first edition of The Lighthouse. Picture kindly submitted by The Victoria Standard The Polar Bears, once again, braved the elements (beautiful sunny sky and a record breaking warm temperature) on New Year s Day and they plunged into the beautiful Bras d Or. Seventeen courageous souls participated in the 25 th Annual Polar Bear Swim. Water temperature this year was -3º Celsius. [1] He concluded that Cape Breton will be setting sail earlier than the rest of Nova Scotia this year because, according to him, winter is over! The annual weather summary, provided by The Old Farmer s Almanac, predicts that April and May will be cooler and drier than normal this year. Also, summer will be drier than normal with the hottest temperatures occurring in early to mid-july and August. Plan your vacations accordingly sailors! 1. Cape Breton Post February 3 rd, bras d or yacht club - JOB OPPORTUNITY Position Title: Bookkeeper Terms of Employment: Two year contract, subject to review and renewal Salary: To be negotiated Closing Date: March 10 th, 2010 Job Description: The person will work closely with management, the Board of Governors and the club s accountant to ensure the timely and accurate recording of all financial transactions and reporting requirements. The person must have a solid background in accounting and be competent in the use of Microsoft Office, E mail, Internet, accounting software, and Canada Revenue Agency s electronic registration, reporting and calculation resources. The person will be responsible for compiling the monthly financial statements for the Board of Governors. Submit Cover Letter, Resume and Three References by mail to: David Dunlop, Commodore Bras d Or Yacht Club 1 Jones Street, PO Box 101, Baddeck, NS B0E 1B0 On February 21 st, 2010, at the AGM held in the lower hall of the club, the new Board of Governors of the Bras d Or Yacht Club was sworn in. Review of the 2009 financial statements by Bruce MacDonald, CA, showed that the club sustained a steady cash flow. Although there was a financial loss in 2009, the club was able to service its long-term debt payments and operating expenses. Looking to the future, it was agreed by Bruce MacDonald, CA, the Board of Governors and the membership present, that there will have to be a strong focus on the following areas: increasing membership numbers hosting more community events increasing race events and boating activities recruiting more youth to the Junior Sailing Program seeking more volunteers to run programs, events and fundraisers more advertising and promotion of our events and activities sourcing funding and assistance from all levels of government ensuring the break water and building are well maintained. The success of the club in 2010 will once again depend on the contributions from the membership, community, staff, government, and the Board of Governors. 3 R E G AT TA W E E K 2010 BYC is planning for a busy sailing season and the highlight of our summer, as usual, will be our Regatta Week, running from August 1 st to August 7 th. This year we will be incorporating a 420 regatta on Monday and Tuesday. As a part of the provincial 420 race circuit, it will be one of four regattas held for 420s in Nova Scotia. As usual, we anticipate having an outstanding entertainment schedule prepared by Cory Cox and Fritz MacLeod. We have a few chair positions open. With the 420 regatta taking place on Monday and Tuesday we anticipate having extra boats participating. The position of Grounds/Harbor management is very important and if you are interested, or know someone who might be in taking this on please let me know. Starting in June, we will be having white sail yacht races on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm. Open to all members and visitors, we are hoping to get more yachts on the water for the season. Mona and Jim Anderson will be organizing these race nights. If you don t know how to sail or don t own a boat but would like to participate, please let us know and we will try to get you on the water! Attention OLDTIMERS and JUNIORS alike! We are going to have pram racing every Friday at 5:30 pm. Racing will be open to all and if the junior response is present we will have a separate night for them. Dust off the lifejacket and re-discover your roots (not the grey ones)..sail A PRAM! Mark your calendars for the weekend of July 17 th and 18 th the McCurdy/Equis Cup weekend. We are hoping to improve attendance. Please spread the word and watch our website for updates. This weekend will count as one leg for the Baddeck 100 th Anniversary Trophy, in addition to the Gardiner Hubbard Bell Trophy (the last day of regatta week) and one other weekend, are yet to be determined. Notice of race, race instructions, race schedules, entertainment schedules and sponsorship information will be appearing on our website over the next few months. If you are interested in having a picture of your boat or children during this regatta, Shawn will be happy to accommodate your request! We will be looking for volunteers in many areas. This would include organizing lunches daily, 420 Regatta evening meal and Junior Night during Regatta Week. Grounds/Harbor Management Responsible for assigning moorings for visiting competitors, traffic flow and boat storage around the club, keeping front wharf available for prams, lasers, 420s and rescue boats. Liaison with the public wharf manager for dockage for competing yachts. Keeping race area cleared of anchored yachts each morning. Media Work as a liaison with media outlets to make them aware of regatta activities and results. 420 REGATTA MONDAY & TUESDAY TWO people each day to work with the race officer in recording participating boats, recording finishes and help with starting races. Work performed on the water. Race committee each day Mark boat and driver each day REGATTA WEEK Minimum of four people each day to work on the deck Monday through Friday. Responsible for registration of competitors for each series being raced for, compiling a list of starters and finishers for each race, and recording finishes for prams, lasers, 420s and yachts. Volunteers to help with the following: registration on Sunday and Monday mornings, assisting the entertainment committee, preparing junior sailing lunches, morning cleanup at the club and other potential positions. If you are interested in volunteering for a job, big or small, with or without a boat, please contact one of the regatta committee team or member of the Board. Your help will be invaluable to us! The site for the annual regatta is selected by the Canadian Yachting Association and this year s regatta will be hosted by the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney from July The regatta typically attracts upwards of 150 junior sailors from across Atlantic Canada and the eastern United States.
