Married couples welcome Volume 2018 Issue 12 December 2018 Merry! scuttlebutt We will have a Party on Saturday December 15th, 5pm at Kathy Ellis home in Westminster. Details are on a flier and the calendar. This is a potluck, so bring food to share and BYOB. As is custom for the club, Bring an Unwrapped Childs Toy that we give to a Childs Charity. We normally do not charge for this event. The price of admission is a toy. If you happened to not have time to get a toy(s), you can make a $5 donation at the party. for Everyone! Whale Watching season is upon us. On warm winter days, it can be a great daysail to go looking for whales and other sea mammals. Skippers, it s time to take out some members, prospective members and have a great day looking at the creatures of the sea. Remember to keep the legal distance from whales and do not directly follow them. CLUB ELECTION The November 13th meeting was the Club Election. The Officers and Board Members for 2019 are: Commodore: Bruce Clark Vice-Commodore: Bill Griffith Rear Commodore: Bill Anast Secretary: Doris Morrissey Treasurer: Camelia Jolly, Membership: Melba Conde Fleet Capt: Ruth Czaplicki Port Capt: Wendell Fleming Member-at-Large: Dave Ferling Next Years Officers will face several challenges. Recruiting more members including skippers and getting more skippers to post their boats. Realizing that taking your boat out for a day sail is just as much work as taking it out for several days at Catalina it is still the most important activity of the club...sailing! We are a sailing club and to get more members and get them involved means that we have to have boats going out. Yes, we have had several boat mechanical problems this year, but now is the time to get those straightened out and get on the water. Skippers, What incentives are necessary to get you out? We used to have free meeting admission after 3 postings and sails, but now we don t charge for meetings at the Crab Pot. We are open to ideas. George Snyder Memorial November 11 and 12th, the family of George Snyder held a memorial party and an ash burial at sea. George was a long time and original member along with his son, Rusty. Rusty has a son in the Coast Guard. Rusty ran the ceremonies and we had a nice party at a family friend s house in Huntington Beach. Rusty met his wife at a Single Sailors event. Many past members of the club were there. Markley Gordon flew in from Nashville, where he now lives with his wife. Steve and Michelle Price, Wayne Noecker and Lisa attended. The also took their boats out for the sea ceremony. Steve with a gang on his Trawler flying a huge Trump flag and Wayne with his J-42 sail boat Sabrosa. I rode on Wayne s boat along with Lisa and Elaine Van Hoff. Rusty had family on his sail boat, Mi Amante. There were several other Single Sailors present. A few Photos of the events are on Page 5. George was and award winning writer and was an original leader of Single Sailors. He suffered a stroke on his boat and was found unconscious. He succumbed several days later. George will be greatly missed. The meetings that both he and Steve Price ran were quite entertaining. Dave Nautical Question: What visual distress signals are USCG required? Continued. Regulations prohibit display of visual distress signals on the water under any circumstances except when assistance is required to prevent immediate or potential danger to persons on board a vessel. All distress signals have distinct advantages and disadvantages. No single device is ideal under all conditions or suitable for all purposes. Pyrotechnics are universally recognized as excellent distress signals. However, there is potential for injury and property damage if not handled properly. These devices produce a very hot flame and the residue can cause burns and ignite flammable material. Pistol launched and hand-held parachute flares and meteors have many characteristics of a firearm and must be handled with caution. In some states they are considered a firearm and prohibited from use. The following illustrates the variety and combination of devices which can be carried in order to meet the requirements: Three Handheld flares (day & night) One handheld red flare and two parachute flares (day & Night). 2 Page 2 Long Beach Singles Yacht Club Bosun s Pipe From the Commodore, LBSYC Member SCYA Founded by Gary Severns, Flag Officers, Directors, Committee Chairs Ahoy Shipmates, This is my last message to you as your Commodore. It's been a long 3 years, with highs and lows. I hope that you will remember the accomplishments of our club under my leadership. We've changed our meeting place twice, as both Khoury's and the Sea Port Marina Hotel have closed. We had been losing significant amounts of money with the meeting room costs in addition to the food costs, as a result of declining membership and meeting participation. While at times it has not been ideal, we have been able to restore our treasury since we have been meeting at the Crab Port. We have not increased our membership dues, and we have eliminated the need for the meeting fee. The success of this club depends on your participation, in both the meetings as well as the activities. I have found that while I have put in a lot of time and effort into our club, in order to make it successful, I have received much more in personal benefit. The knowledge, experience, and friendships I have obtained are rewarding and life long. I appreciate all of your love and kindness over the years as I served as your Secretary, and all three flag offices. During my tenure we have been successful in collaborating our fleet activities, with both the Marina Yacht Club and the Hurricane Gulch Yacht Club, at Newport Harbor and at Emerald Bay, Catalina Island. This has been my passion, to see the Long Beach Singles Yacht Club participate in activities with other clubs. I am particularly proud of instituting the tradition of the Skippers Signature Drink. Again, this has been a very rewarding experience for me personally. The boating community is truly a welcoming one. I would like to thank Maria Bogart and Karen Rademaker in particular for their faithfulness in service, as well as all of the other dedicated members who have served on my three Executive Boards. I would also like to especially thank Rodney and Joyce Coomber, for always being there when I needed extra support and assistance with projects. I wish the 2019 Executive Board a successful year. The club is in good hands with Bruce Clark. He has a vision for change, and I hope you will be supportive of his efforts. Fair Winds and Following Seas, my dear friends. Here are some interesting events to mark on your calendar. Naples boat parade on the 8 th of December and they are featuring Star Spangled which should get to all of us. The city of Long Beach features its 36 th Annual Boat parade on the 15 th of December at Shoreline Marina. Always a great show. 5 Page 5 Long Beach Singles Yacht Club Bosun s Pipe Nautical from page 1 Remember, All pyrotechnics must be in date. Out of date pyrotechnics may still be usable, providing they are not damaged. They are not considered part of your active Visual Distress Signals requirement. Make sure that all pyrotechnic units are stored in water tight containers. The marine environment is harsh and it never hurts to have more than the minimum requirements. When things go awry and you need emergency assistance, there s no such thing as too many safety devices. That includes fire extinguishers on boats. That will be next month s topic. George Snyders Memorial & Ash Ceremony 11/11-12/2018 Wayne Social Committee Notes from Karen Rademaker: On Saturday Dec. 15th, 5pm, LBSYC will hold our Party. In the past we had our Tuesday evening dinner/ dance. Women wore nice dresses or dressy pant suits. Last Year, the dinner/ dance party was pot luck at the Coomber s condo recreation room. This year we will be celebrating Xmas in Kathy Ellis s house in Westminster. Again pot luck and bring your own beverages. Wear festive holiday attire. Please bring an Unwrapped Child s Toy to donate to a Kid s Charity. Also, remember that we do not have meetings in December. Our next general meting will be January 22nd. See You at the party and in 2019 Karen Notes: We also really need people to step up and offer to host a house party. We help with setup, cleanup and the club provides ice, plates and utensils.
