3 Wow, it doesn t seem possible that it is April already. Where did the first quarter go? Easter has come and gone and there was great member participation in both the Keiki Easter Party and the Easter Sunday Brunch. Thanks goes out to the Deckhands for sponsoring a fantastic Keiki Easter Party. It s great to see the increase in member participation in all of the club events. Friday Family Nights attendance continues to grow and the First Friday music has been very popular. Roselle has some really great musicians lined up so check the posters and blast s for whose playing each month so come join the fun and music. The Annual Blood Bank Drive was held on March 26 and we had 52 donors sign up and we were able to meet our goal of 35 pints. Thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to donate blood to help out the Blood Bank. A big thanks goes to the Tennis Fleet and the Galley for their donation of baked goodies, fresh fruit and other tasty treats for the donors before and after giving blood. Jean Fernie, Ron Dodini and team deserve a lot of credit for organizing another successful Blood Drive this year. Great job Jean and Ron. The club is hosting the Pacific Rim I-14 Championships on April 2 thru April 5 with an estimated 24 boats participating. This regatta was held at the club two years ago and was very successful. Due to that success, Andy Bates has been instrumental on getting this regatta back to the club this year. The Awards Banquet will be held in the Long House on April 4 with Hawaiian dance students (including fire dancers) providing the entertainment on the lawn after the banquet. Andy s invited members to come watch the show which will start at approximately 7:30 PM. The Club Manager s Selection Committee has reviewed close to 40 resumes and they narrowed the selection down to the top five. Unfortunately, we had a couple of great candidates fall out after a follow-up with references did not check out. We still have a couple possible candidates that are going thru a final interview stages. Our goal of having a new club manager by the end of March will not happen but we want to make sure we pick the right candidate. In closing I have some good news to report. After many delays with obtaining HECO s approval of our PV Solar project, they did their final inspection on March 25 and the system passed all of the tests. On March 30, HECO installed the new Net Meters and I can finally say that the PV Solar system is officially turned on. We have two systems, one with 200 panels and the other with 115 panels for a total of 315 panels. Live Aloha and enjoy the club Commodore Richard Perkins Vice Commodore Tom Wood Aloha all. As spring comes to the islands, our activity level at the Club picks up and it s a great time to come down and enjoy your club. Boating activity is increasing as the weather gets just that little bit nicer, and the longer daylight hours give us more time to enjoy everything we have. As activity increases, so do the occasional parking challenges. Most of the time we are in good shape for parking, but on an exceptionally busy day it can be difficult to find a spot on property. We have increased our vigilance in regards to parking stickers to help ensure that only authorized vehicles are inside the gate, so please ensure that each of your vehicles has a legible KYC sticker. As a reminder, only vehicles registered to members may be issued a decal. When parking is available, a non-member vehicle may be allowed to park on property, but that is the exception not the rule. Improved cameras will be installed shortly giving us better coverage and resolution which will help us identify vehicles and owners when there are issues. Please do you part to help keep the parking situation manageable. As boating activity also increases, please note that for the dry stored boats, the area adjacent to the north tennis court is not authorized for boat cleaning and engine flushing. The area by the boat ramp against the bulkhead is available this purpose please restrict your boat washing activities to that area. In addition, all boats and trailers on KYC property are required to be KYC registered. That means a legible KYC sticker on both the boat, and if applicable the trailer or dolly. Stickers are free and it ' s an easy process, just drop by the office and provide the documentation for your boat or trailer and they will give you a sticker. Lastly, please support the Port Captain and our KYC Staff by complying with their instructions and guidance when using the facilities. They are responsible for helping to make the club run safely and smoothly, and they need your support. Stay safe whether at the club or on the water. Pac Rim Pranksters! I-14 sailor Kris Henderson woke up Friday April 1 to find his boat in the yacht club pool. April Fools! Photo: Ann Bachmann Aloha, The Safety at Sea Seminar was a resounding success with more than 50 participants sans moi. That time honored and well honed practice of putting off until it can t be done did it again. I missed out big time. Another event I missed out on and so did everyone else was the ORF Single Handed. Too much wind for that one. It will be rescheduled to May 14. There was plenty of action in the Class boats and Inshore Racing Fleet that can be read about elsewhere in this Telltales. Looking ahead, the Friday night races are starting up on April first. You say, what a joke, but get out there and race against our juniors and you ll see its no joke at all. Andy Bates is heading up the race committee with his wife Maureen. Together, they will be introducing other dinghy racing on Friday nights including 420s, FJs, and Lasers, building on the momentum gained with the First Tuesdays last year. Try it, you ll like it! Andy and bride Maureen are also behind the Bi-annual International 14 Pacific Rim Regatta held from April 2 to April 5. Come down and check out these high tech racing machines. There is more sail area per linear foot of boat on these babies than the America s Cup boats or the Volvo 65s. On Sunday April 3 the I 14 fleet will be hosting the Juniors to come and experience I 14 sailing on the bay. Should be a huge benefit for our juniors and rumor is that our sponsors, PASHA, would like to video the event and publicize it. The ORF and Cruising fleets will be off to Pokai Bay/ Barber s Point on the weekend of the April 9 and due to return on the 16 th. For those of you participating, please let our Port Captain, Mike Barker, know you are leaving so he can use your slip to ease up on some of the weekend congestion we get at the Club. Other events include the usual round of IRF and Classboat racing and a Tennis Tournament with a Mexican twist on the 16th. Lastly, Trois Amis will be representing KYC in the Lipton Cup currently held by Waikiki Yacht Club on April 23 and 24 off the south shore. Having been defeated three years in a row by a boat that planes off the wind, Trois Amis represents a significant change in our strategy toward bringing the Lipton Cup back to the Club where it belongs. Godspeed or break a leg! Thanks everyone who help s mak e this great Club tick. I constantly hear from local folks and folks from far offshore that we have one of the best run clubs around. This is due to the volunteer work that makes everything happen here. Mahalo! Aloha, Frederic Rear Commodore Frederic Berg 3
4 Junior Sailing Director Jesse Andrews This year we have opened up our Friday evening races for all dinghy classes starting in April and running through the end of September! Andy and Maureen Bates have volunteered to do Race Committee for the season. El Toros, Toppers and Bics will have a first start at 6pm at the bulkhead. FJs, 420s, Lasers will have a start from the end of the bulkhead. If there are I14s and 29ers they can also have a start out at the end of the bulkhead. There are some UH sailors coming to join us and we can look at doing team racing in the future if there is demand for that. If you are a nonmember, be sure to sign in the guest book. I hope everyone will leave the boats in better condition than you found them in! If there are issues with any boats please write it on the white board in the Junior Clubhouse. Enjoy! We had a great turnout for our HYSA #2 on March 19th with over 40 sailors! We had many volunteers from KYC, WYC, HYC, HKBC, and Pearl Harbor. We got in five races in 10 to 15 knot trade winds. Congrats to all the young sailors that had a blast that day! We have a few adult sailing classes starting in April. The Cal 20 class will be taught by Bill Meyers from 9am-noon,Saturday, April 2,9,16,23. This class cost will be $120 for members and $160 for non members. We will also have an adult sailing class taught in Toppers for people looking to get time sailing in small boats and even by themselves. This class will be run April 7, 14, 21 and 29 from 9:00 am to 11:30. Jenny Guzik and I will be instructing. The cost will be $80 for members and $90 for non members. Another great opportunity in April is a Racing Rules of Sailing Clinic at the Hawaii Kai Boat Club. Rules Clinic by Tom Pochereva Date: April 9 Time: 10am Venue: HKBC Club room Followed by Team racing clinic with Olympic sailor Andrew Lewis We encourage all sailors to participate. Lastly we are expecting our shipment of 8 new Toppers around the 9th of April! I will be looking for some help reorganizing the equipment room prior to then. If you have some carpentry skills and would like to help out send me a text or andrewsjesse@gmail.com. Aloha!! Aloha, We have a busy month coming up and I hope you re all ready to have some fun! Friday Night sailing is back, starting April 1. Not only will the El Toros be racing but the 420s, FJs and Lasers will too. This would be a great opportunity to try sailing a new boat or work on crewing skills. Races start at 6:00pm, hope to see you out there! Our KYC Sail Camp has been approved and is scheduled for May 14 and 15. It s an overnight campout at the yacht club with intense sail training during the day and a fun party Saturday night. We ll be setting up our tents on the grass near the south tennis court where the I-14s are stored. Details and application on pages 14 & 15 in this issue of Telltales. This is going to be so fun! How often do you get to campout and learn racing skills by the best coaches in the state? Sail Camp is open to children or grandchildren of KYC members only, ages Friday Night Movies are here, the first one is being held on Friday April 29 at 7:00 pm on the Upper Deck. The movie this month is Minions - Go Back to the Beginning. Movies are free to all KYC juniors and will be held once a month from April - August. An adult will be present to watch over the little ones. Bring a pillow if you want to be really comfortable. Got an idea for a movie? Just let me know. You can always reach me at: kycjuniorcommodore@gmail.com Stay safe and sail fast! 7 Safety at Sea Seminar March 5 On March 5, fifty-six sailors gathered on the KYC Upper Deck for a day of learning at the first US Sailing certified Safety at Sea Seminar held in Hawaii in twenty years. Their certification received for attending lasts five years and is required for skippers and crew in many offshore sailing events. Moderator Chuck Hawley flew in from Santa Cruz, CA. for the event. Presentations were also made by Steve Chamberlin, Dr. Kenneth Kaan, WeatherGuy Rick Shema, Bill "Noodle" Leary, and Commander Matthew Rudick of the US Coast Guard. Live flare and liferaft deployments were conducted by Bobbie Martin of Liferaft and Marine Safety. Extensive material was covered, all aimed at an emphasis on preparation to avoid disaster while at sea and followed by what to do, if in spite of all the preparations, something does go wrong. We are grateful to the Moderator and Speakers who gave their time in preparation and presentation, to POP and Liferaft and Marine Safety for providing the flares and liferaft demonstration; to the US Coast Guard and Commander Rudick for his time; Landfall Navigation and Hawaii Boating Magazine for their support. Raft and Flare Demonstrations. Photos Kim Ickler Cal 20 Fleet Jeff Cruise Aloha from the Cal 20 Fleet, We had a great turnout for the Wahine Classboat race, which took place on March 13. Eight wahine boats participated in the regatta, which was raced in a steady 10 to 15 knots. After a competitive three races, Benton Widlansky and crew took home 1st place, with finishes consisting of two bullets and a second. Congratulations to the winners and all the wahine participants. A big mahalo to Kerri Schweibert and Katie Cruise for organizing the regatta, and to all the Cal 20 boat owners who lent their boats for the weekend. Our next two regattas are on April 10 and May 1.
