CHIC# Tari competed in Bakersfield under AKC Obedience judges Mrs. Barbara S. Arine and Mrs. Carolyn S. Wray. He had scores of 86 & 91, in the hot afternoon sun, to earn his 4 th AKC Title. 5 GDCC Bulletin Page 5 When is a Dane not a Dane? When it s running the AKC FAST CAT Trials! Who thinks their Great Dane runs fast? Here s an great opportunity to find out. Southern California Lure Coursing has finally brought AKC FAST CAT Trials to Chino, California. AKC FAST CAT provides owners the ability to witness just how fast their dog can run the 100 yard dash. This is one of the only performance sports which is driven solely by the dog's pure instinct to chase a lure. The dog can earn points towards an AKC Title based on their handicapped speed which is determined by size and converted to miles per hour. The handicap is broken down by 12 inches and under, inches and 18 inches and over and are run only one at a time. Titles are earned by accumulating points based on their handicap speed. May 5th was the very first FAST CAT in Chino, California. Zamara s 100 yard dash clocked in at 27 miles per hour. Two people are needed, one to release the dog and one to catch the dog. I recommend the owner of the dog be the catcher so your dog is running as fast as they can towards you and the lure. Make sure whoever is holding the dog at the start to release is able to handle a strong forceful Great Dane!! I put my hand over her eyes so she could not see the dog in front of her run and it worked very nicely. The catcher can do anything they want to do to entice the dog to run faster as long as they do not cross the finish line. This being our first time, Zamara slowed way down about 10 yards to the finish line which cost us time. Next time I will either have a squeaky toy or turn and run away from her as if we re in a race. The current top speed to beat in AKC rankings for Great Danes so far this year is 27.8 miles per hour...could your Dane set the next top speed? Sign up and find out!
