2 Dear Guests, Speakers and Delegates at the 3rd International Yacht Forum Hamburg! One year ago, the slogan of the 2nd IYF in Hamburg was one world, one rule. Since then, obviously according to the whishes of many offshore-sailors, this issue has been discussed frequently and has built a central subject at the ISAF Annual Meeting in Puerto Rico, at the IRC Congress in Paris and during many negotiations between ORC and the RORC. The importance of this discussion was emphasized by your support during the last IYF edition, and we are happy to see, that things started to move into the right direction. The third edition of the IYF, taking place on 24th/25th March will not focus on politics but on the central questions of yacht racing: speed and performance. Our focus on topics such as high-tech regarding construction, high-tech regarding saildesign and high-tech regarding tactical and navigation software also shows, that high performance yacht racing creates high financial efforts, which makes sponsoring an even more important issue. This leads us to topics such as media at sea, like video-reports and online-tracking. Last but not least we are highlighting the Facebook-Age. Since the offshore racing community is creating virtual attention before and after a race, online supported race-management-programs are becoming more and more important and thus create another topic on our agenda. The IYF in Hamburg has been established in order to improve the international relations created through our sport and the integration of sailors regarding the development process. The program this time covers a broader spectrum with a matching slogan for this year s event: become an expert meet the experts! We are pleased to welcome you in Hamburg. On behalf of the German Sailing Federation, I would like to extend to you all a warm welcome to this years International Yacht Forum 2012 here in Hamburg. We wish you another great event in our beautiful Hanseatic city. It is the stated goal of the organizer to give you this opportunity to have discussions with the experts and with each other to improve your detailed knowledge of yacht design, rigging, electronic equipment and other important issues, and to assist you to prepare yourself and your project for the upcoming racing season. Racing on Handicap Basis or on One Design or Box Rule level that is an ongoing discussion. This very important issue is discussed worldwide emotionally and sometimes even philosophically - but always endlessly and usually without any final result. Those of you which are committed to handicap racing know how difficult proper handicapping is. To be competitive with your own yacht globally under only one handicap rule that would be everyone s great vision: One World, One Rule! We from ORC and the RORC are the shareholders of the two worldwide most important handicap systems. We are sitting in the same boat and have jointly launched a race whose successful completion all of us want with all our hearts. We are also in close contact with US Sailing and NYYC which have launched recently a new High Performance Rule (HPR), and our efforts are actively supported by the German Sailing Federation. Last year I stated that this is a difficult long-distance race with many obstacles, with often shifting and gusty winds and difficult sea conditions. Fortunately the crew is offshore-proven and has a professional attitude. I said that we have learned to rely on each other. Consequently, a strategy and navigation plan for these difficult racing conditions has been adapted: the first way point was the business plan, with the rating formula details to follow later on. Actually we are still in the race and at the AGM of ISAF and ORC in Puerto Rico last November we renewed a strategy paper and fixed an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for November This forum definitely has no place for political discussion. But winning a regatta has so many other aspects which we have to deal with. All of them are important and only those of us which have optimized all of them may win at the end. The International Yacht Forum in Hamburg is an excellent platform for integrating communications and constructive suggestions that might help the crew move the boat more quickly and safely on the race course. I wish you all a stimulating weekend in Hamburg and a successful racing season 2012 with always fair winds and following seas. The International Yacht Forum of the German Owners Association is providing a platform for the exchange of this information for owners as well as for the yacht industry, where new trends are presented as well as important topics being discussed. 8 Expedition Theorytraining Parallel to the International Yacht Forum the Go For Speed training of the DSV will take place in the neighbour room. After an introduction of Nick White at the beginning of the forum, the participants of the Go For Speed training change from the Albert Schäfer Saal to the room Merkur. The training contains intensive information and practical training in the tactical software expedition. Due to the lack of good software during the Volvo Ocean Race in 1994 the winning navigator Nick White (on VO60 Yamaha) started 1995 to develop a tactical and navigation software. Over the years Expedition is being developed continiously. Today a lot of the world most sucessful teams use this software for long distance racing and also for inshore up and downs. The training will be done in English and is adressed to sailors/tacticians, who use a tactical program and people, who want to explore the possibillities of using software during racing. Expedition offers navigation based on nearly all electronic vector- and bitmap maps, weather routing and route optimisation. 10 Volker Andreae (ger) german Offshore owners association Volker Andreae, President of the German Offshore Owners Association ( and German delegate in the IRC Congress, is the owner of the ILC 40 J/V Inschallah VI. Andreae introduced IRC in Germany, but still also races ORCi with some success. He created the Baltic IRC-Open Circuit ( and organized the first International Yacht Forum in Hamburg/ Germany, which will take place again on 24th March 2012 ( Stefano Beltrando (ita) QI Composites Stefano Beltrando, born 1975, Italy. After gaining experience in the aerospace industry while studying at Turin University, he has been financed by the Nattional Institute of Physics of Matters to develop a guideline for UT on composite parts, started to build the composite defects atlas and started the company Quality Investigations on Composites, now having a team of 7 and cooperating with Turin University. After 12 years QI he has worked on approx projects all around the world, having been involved in 4 America s Cups, wind mill and automotive industry. Torsten Conradi (ger) Judel / Vrolijk Torsten Conradi, born in 1956, studied Naval Architecture in Hannover and Hamburg, followed by 5 years research in the area of Aero- and Hydrodynamics of yachts. In 1986 he became the third partner of judel/vrolijk & co, and currently is the President of the DBSV, Chairman of the Yacht Committee of the Germanischer Lloyd and member of the technical advisory body. He enjoys racing and cruising, and is married with four children. John Corby (GBR) corby yachts John Corby was born in 1962 and has been boating all his life. Being literate in CAD in the mid 80s enabled him to get a job in an established design office, then in 1988 he got his first own commission which was to design and build a 27ft LDB to race in CHS (now IRC). In the mid 90s he originated the massive bulb IRC design rtoute,t which so many other designers have since followed and his boats continue to dominate their classes in many areas of the world. Whereas most designers aspire to move up to maxis and superyachts, John has remained firmly with his roots in smaller family sized racer/cruisers. Dobbs Davis (usa) International yachting journalist Active as a professional sailor, journalist, instructor and project manager, Dobbs has touched on nearly every aspect of yacht racing over the past 25 years of his involvement in the game. This diverse background and a close proximity to the Grand Prix-level of the sport gives him unique insight on the role of technological innovation and design in improving the speed, stability, and comfort of performance sailing yachts. prof. Kai Graf (ger) FH Kiel Dr. Kai Graf, Professor of Naval Architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Kiel, founder and senior scientist of the Yacht Research Unit Kiel, a university spin-off providing flow analysis services for the professional sail sport community, yacht designers, sail makers and boat yards. He has been involved in Volvo Ocean Race and Americas Cup campaigns since Besides his professional link to sail sport technology development, Kai is an avid sailor on dinghy and bigboat whenever time permits. Andre Justin (slo) justin Naval design Andrej Justin, born in Koper on the Adriatic coast in 1959, has lived with yachts and the sea all through his life.he designed his first boats for the biggest Slovenian boat builder ELAN in the late eighties, and graduated in Yacht Design at Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology in Andrej Justin has designed several racing boats from 33-foot match race one design JustinTen to 80-foot carbon, canting keel MaxiJena, build in our yard. The latest achievement is the design of the Russel Coutts racer RC44. Jason Ker (esp) Ker Design Ker Design stepped up onto the international stage in the Admirals Cup of 2003, where the Ker 55 Aera (renamed Bribon for the event) won all seven inshore races at the Admirals Cup. Ker s designs have continued to dominate under the IRC rule, winning many important regattas and offshore races throughout the world (see Racing Results).

12 Stefan Kunstmann Royal Ocean Racing Club Stefan is working as the Racing Administrator of the Royal Ocean Racing Club in London. His previous role as the head of a successful German Software Company, coupled with his 15+ years of experience in Race Management, makes him a valued member of the ISAF s Information Technology and Tracking Commission as well. He is the creator of the innovative Race Entry Management system REMUS and the RCMS Crew Management System used by the RORC. Greg Marie (usa) Sail designer, doyle sailmakers INC. Greg Marie is sail designer for Doyle Sailmakers, Inc. in Salem, Massachusetts USA. His background is in boatbuilding as well as sailmaking. He has sailed since he was 6 years old, racing in junior boats such as 420s and lasers, collegiate fleets, vanguard 15s and bigger boats rated under PHRF and IRC. His design work ranges from One Design sails to maxi and superyacht sails. Greg works closely with many of the local PHRF racers to develop inventories that balance boat speed and rating. Some special projects he has worked on are sail optimisation for the Herreshoff NY 40 Marilee under the CRF rating system as well as optimisation for mini-maxi RP 72 Shockwave. Greg sails as professional crewmember on superyachts. Robert Sleep (gbr) Director Marine Camera Solutions Rob Sleep is one of the founders of Marine Camera Solutions. Marine Camera Solutions was started in 2008 by two ex-sailing professionals, in order to bring the technical requirements of modern communications and video delivery into the niche world of sail racing. Since then they have been involved with numerous off-shore and inshore racing programs (Vendee Globe, Barcelona World Race, Velux 5 Oceans, Extreme 40 s etc) and have been successful in designing and delivering innovative solutions to both the larger yacht market and also Olympic Class dinghies. Meeno Schrader (ger) Wetterwelt gmbh Dr. Meeno Schrader, 50, grew up at the North Sea, sailing and racing since he was a child. Studying meteorology and oceanography in Kiel, he found his own company WetterWelt in 1999 with now 15 employers. Specialised in marine weather he and his team are working with racing teams around the world from a 5-year cooperation with Ellen MacArthur to the America s Cup in Valencia and Olympic Campaigns in South Corea, Athen, Quingdao and Weymouth for multiple teams. More information: Mark Mills (irl) Mills yacht Design Mills Design Ltd. is a firm set up by Mark Mills to specialise in performance yacht design for racing and cruising. Based in Ireland but active around the world, Mills Design is one of the most successful design offices of recent years, his designs having won numerous titles under IRC, ORC, and ORR, as well as Boat of the Year titles. The success of boats such as multiple Championship winners Mariners Cove and Tiamat, IMA Mini-Maxi Champion Alegre, and production designs such as the King 40 and DK 46 are well known worldwide. Nick White (NZE) Expedition Nick White got his first break navigating Yamaha in the 1993/4 Whitbread race, which they were fortunate to win. This success was followed by the Americas Cup with Tag Heuer, Newscorp Volvo team, Stars and Stripes and a lot of other racing since, mainly in Australia, the US and the Caribbean. Highlights include class and overall wins at Big Boat Series, Key West, Pineapple Cup, Caribbean 600, Transpac, Fastnet etc. The 94 Whitbread showed a lack of software tools to aid offshore navigation, so starting in 1995, Nick White started developing the predecessors to Expedition. Most of the early work was on weather, route optimisation and instrument systems. Charting, inshore tools etc. Expedition has obviously been developed a lot since.
