Newsletter of the Rosebud Yacht Club Inc. MARCH 2014 INSIDE Notes from Commodore 1 Sarah at the Worlds 2 Whites at the Tasers 3 Summer activities 4-7 Maggies and Sailing News 8 Social Event 9 FLAG OFFICERS: Commodore: Marvyn Brown 17 Zenith Street Pascoe Vale 3044 Phone (03) Vice Commodore: Kyle Beeson Rear Commodore: Bronwyn Beeson Secretary Wendy Ludwick 243 Plenty River Drive Greensborough 3088 Phone (03) Treasurer/Public Officer Ian Ludwick 10 Stuart Street Greensborough 3088 Phone (03) Website: m.au Welcome to our late summer Newsletter, it s hard to believe we are nearing the end of the season. Unfortunately, we have lost a few recent races due to strong winds, but hopefully we can finish the season with good weather. The Rosebud Summer Series of racing has been run and won, with Wayne taking out the A-Class Catamarans Division, from Geoff (2 nd ) and Mark (3 rd ). In the Monohulls it was Team Ludwick, with Ian, Wendy and Alex finishing 1, 2 and 3, and James winning in the Youth Division. It was pleasing to have the event sponsored (Anonymously) and we will be able to conduct it again next year. Despite best efforts to advertise throughout the Camping areas, there wasn t a great deal of interest from Visitors, so maybe we can do better to attract Non-Members to the event next season. Socially we enjoyed the Barefoot Bowling at Dromana and the Movie Night at the Club which was again a great success. Thanks to the Beesons for organising and running the night so well. The Australia Day weekend was enjoyable with our Spit Roast and Auction evening on the Saturday. Thanks to those who contributed their wares for sale and provided the delicious food for dinner. Thanks also to Andy the Man with the Big Voice for conducting the Auction, which raised a good amount of money for the Club. On the Sunday we attended the McCrae Australia Day Race and were well represented with all our boats doing well. In particular, Wendy managed a second in her Division. McCrae were very welcoming and acknowledged our attendance on the day and on their website homepage. It s a good thing that we can maintain a good relationship with our neighbouring Clubs, as we do with McCrae. Over the Holidays, Geoff and Sarah attended the Hobie Nationals in SA where they placed 2 nd in the Hobie 18 Division. Well done to you both. Matthew and Graeme attended the Nationals in the Tasar Class at Blairgowrie and finished a very credible mid fleet (42 nd out of 67) in some trying conditions against some of the Country s best Tasar sailors. In addition, Sarah did very well in the Hobie 16 Worlds at Vincentia, NSW (See report in this Newsletter.) I wish you all the best for the remaining weeks of the season, in particular to those who are undergoing treatment or recovering from illness at the moment, we are thinking of you. Marvyn We have had an extremely busy Summer Series with lots of news and events. We have had quite a few members competing in other series so a big thank you for those who have submitted articles. This is a very big photo Edition so you might want to think twice about printing. Ladies, don t forget to book in for the Peninsula Springs. I m booked!! (see Page 9) Regards Wendy
PAGE 2 March 2014 Notes from Sarah Newman Krystal & I only did 2 regattas and a couple of training sessions before worlds. This was nowhere near enough, but Krystal was living in Sydney and it was all we could fit in. We had a variety of conditions during women's and opens. It was so light and shifty during the first race of women's the race was abandoned. We were sitting in 6th. In our actual first race, we were comfortably sitting in 4th when we capsized about 100m from the finish line, which was heartbreaking. We got it back up fairly quickly to finish in 11th. At the end of day one we were sitting in 8th. We went backwards on day 2 with a 12th and a 7th which put us back to 10th. The third and final day was windy which obviously suited us as we won the 1st race. The last photo is us in the race we won. Our last race was a bit of a shocker. The breeze had built to around 25 knots then and we had a bit of a port/starboard issue which resulted in us having to do a penalty turn and then capsizing. We were stoked to finish 7th overall with a race win after such little preparation. The next challenge will be winning the next Hobie women's worlds. Krystal has moved back to Melbourne so we plan to buy a boat once a date is announced for the next worlds. I did the opens with my friend Kenneth who I sailed with at the Fiji worlds. The first 3 days is a qualifying series. We were thrilled to qualify 10th out of 112. The top 39 went through to the Semi Finals along with all the pre qualified teams. Semi Final Presentation The Semi Finals were a lot tougher with many current and ex world champions competing. We just scraped through in 54th (only one place behind the current masters world champ) to the finals, which is the top 56. After not making it through qualifying in Fiji, we were really pleased to make finals this time around. Many good sailors didn't. Open Final: Day 1 Grandmasters sailing Open Final: Last Day
PAGE 3 March 2014 How did this come about? Initially and casually I had asked Matthew whether he was interested in sailing in our Tasar (that has been idle in our Rosebud garage for many years) at a local club up the road after Christmas. To my surprise, Matthew instantly jumped at the opportunity and was very keen and eager to give it a go. Our regatta preparation? I regularly sailed the Corsair prior to Christmas with Beth and Matthew and hence had limited Tasar sailing opportunities due to a mix of weather, my crew all being available or not sailing due to outside social events. Secondly, the boat had not been out sailing for four (4) years and required me to find all the parts and accessories before competing. Therefore, prior heading down to Blairgowrie on measurement day, much work was required to find and coordinate all my gear and ensure that the boat official passed measurement. Matthew and I weighed in at the bare minimum weight or Kgs (min. 130Kgs). Ideal weight for light wind conditions or reaching and running legs. Next day Sat 28 Dec: Invitation Race was to be our first practice outing in this highly competitive boat and event. As we rigged and proceeded to the water, the wind was blowing 25 knots with many yachties struggling to safely leave the marina area. I was sure that Matthew and I, given our weight and zero preparation, would be up against it. However, luckily, the race committee cancelled all racing for the day prior to us leaving the beach. Our first practice session? Heat 1 & 2 Sun 29 Dec: in a major regatta with 67 entries from around Australia. Wind 20 knots in a challenging boat. Was not sure if we would safely exit the marina in this overpowered craft, with no earlier practice along with minimum crew weight. The challenge began. Matthew and I agreed to learn the boat, take time to do the basics (tacking, change mast rotation, balancing our weight, staying out of trouble and not capsizing). We did a great job staying above the water, keeping the boat going forward and no gear failure. Results: 51 and 41. Fantastic effort from Matthew and I in our first outing. Overall results (including: weather conditions): Day Heat Result Winds Sun 29 Dec Knots 2 41 Mon 30 Dec Knots Tue 31 Dec Knots 7 29 Thu 2 Jan Knots 9 42 Fri 3 Jan Knots Overall 42 Overall Winners: Paul & Bronwyn Ridgway (VIC Sandringham) 1st, Rob & Nicole Douglass (NSW) 2nd all former world champions. Paul & Browyn have been competitive in the class for over 25 years. Many of the sailors at the pointy end of the fleet are great people that put much time and Tasar 2585 Private& Confidential Key Learnings: Regatta was a great experience including: meeting new people, good venue & race management, very social able and we enjoyed the week Racing insights: get a good start, stay out of trouble, go the right way, have no gear failure, learn from earlier races and stay healthy Matthew and I thoroughly enjoyed the regatta and the experience at Blairgowrie. We will continue to sail our Tasar Private & Confidential Our Next Regatta: Matthew and I will be sailing in the upcoming Victorian Tasar Championships over the March 2014 Labour Day weekend at Western Port Yacht Club. If you have time, come down and see us both in action.
PAGE 4 March 2014 We a great night with our Pasta and Games night. Once again the competitive nature comes out in us all. Thanks to Andy for providing the Pasta and to everyone else who assisted with the Games. We split into teams and had the team members competing against each other. We had a sailing version of snakes and ladders We had a great turn out at the Barefoot Bowling night at Dromana Bowls Club. We had some special appearances from past members and friends of the club; Ron and Robyn Gascoigne and Renee with her lovely wedding photos. Lindsay Thorn was also there with some friends. Is John coaching? Once again, we had to make a competition out of it, and we organised a round robin with knock out rounds. Quoites, with some very interesting throwing actions. We also had Darts and coin tossing. Then we had some lovely sweets, followed by a Rapid Quiz. If you ever wondered about the competitiveness, have a look at the concentration on these faces. And the youth had their own competition. And the final four were: Tess, Ian, Wendy and Geoff Fiske, with Geoff taking out the Inaugural RoYC Bowls Championship!! Marv was heard to say, the cream always rises to the top. And the winners were!!!!! Rumour has it that Geoff is going to approach Rosebud Bowls to see if he can get a game.
PAGE 5 Another really fun night was had by all. Firstly we had Rosebud McBurgers, while the curtain raiser (Frozen) was playing and then a quick movie quiz, which really showed us who has had a misspent youth, watching movies. Andy pipped Ian in the quiz. Must have been those cold nights in Scotland. We all then settled down in our comfy chairs and lounges to watch The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. We were spoilt with popcorn and ice creams during the picture. I must say, there were some pretty extravagant chairs. Just like Gold Class. March 2014 The weather was kind to us with good joy ride breezes and a high tide, which make it easy to pick people up and drop them off at the waters edge. Frank and team did a couple of runs out to the seals with some visitors to the club. The club looked a picture and was full of activity when Chelsea from Yachting Victoria dropped in to see how things were going. Marvyn and Kim showed her around and we had about 50 people out sailing for the day and all with big smiles on their faces. James and some of the youth went out themselves in the yachts, however James returned with a ripped sail. Don t ask!! It was great to see Andrew Brown with some of his friends. He said it was like riding a bike. See over for more photos

PAGE 7 March 2014 Finally, the last weekend of events in January included the traditional Roast Dinner and the auction, which was up to its usual standard of high class, top quality foods, items and beverages. We raised about $600 from the night and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. We also had a special visit from Sean, Anna and Mark Purcell. Mark is growing up so quickly, and we are delighted to hear that he will be having a brother or sister to play with later this year. Geoff Fiske and Sarah Newman sailed in the Hobie 18 Nationals in Adelaide over Dec/Jan and finished a credible 2 nd, only 4 points behind the winners. Geoff said, of the first boat, they were just too fast. As Marv mentioned on the front page, we presented the awards for the Summer series. We had a fantastic sponsor and the prizes were well worth it, and included Whitworths vouchers for $50, $30 and $20 and prizes for crew including sailing gloves and other bits and pieces for sailing. A big thankyou for the Summer Series. It s always hotly contested and well attended. The next day a small contingent headed down to McCrae to sail in the Australia Day regatta. We arrived around midday and were warmly greeted by members of McCrae. We enjoyed a relaxing lunch of hot pies and Lamingtons. (Very Australian) We then headed out for some light breeze sailing. The Corsairs, Castle and Impulse were all in Div 5 with the Lasers and the A s in Div 1. The Rosebud Yachts performed very well with a 1 st, 2 nd, 4 th,& 6 th. James sailed in his first large fleet regatta and Wayne Thorn and Mark Dyble learned a great deal in their Division in amongst the A fleet. That s not you over the line is it Geoff?? Oh Ok, wrong class!! Looks busy!!
PAGE 8 MARCH 2014 Kim and Wendy did a Bradbury recently in some light weather racing. They had fallen into a hole and were last to This has been such an action packaged newsletter, that we will round the outer sea mark with only the finish line, (which was keep this brief. Most of the news has been been included in close to shore) to complete the race. When they started the event reports. heading to the finish, they could see that all the other yachts had been dragged past the finish by the tide, so over We said goodbye to Georgina Fiske early Jan and we have compensated and finished ahead of them all. Let s just say, heard that she has settled in well with her American family. they weren t too popular at lunch time. John and Ian headed out one day when the wind was sitting at about 10 knots. Within 2 minutes, the wind went from 10 to about 30 knots. John came straight in to shore near the Jetty and Ian wrestled his Laser into shore after tipping about 3 times. They were both a bit shaken, but recovered well after a hot drink and debrief. Guy Kerr has made a huge effort to snare the golden cactus when he re-built his Hobie, and mixed the hulls up. He couldn t work out why his tiller blades were on a funny angle. Youth Training has been a bit hit and miss with some windy days interfering with the program. We had a good day a couple of weeks ago with some light weather practice. The littlies had fun practicing getting back into the yacht from the deep water. There were some good roll tacks until the Dolphins decided to visit and threw everything in chaos. Training in the kitchen at the Ludwicks on a windy day.
