Looking back, I would like to thank Past Commander, Dale Holland for his two years at the helm, Mike Batty for a great deal of work as Treasurer, Don Quibell as Training Officer and his day to day attention to details that contribute to the success of our Squadron and Ruth Still who does so much to support our 660 members. A warm welcome to our new Bridge members: John Bowlby - MAREP; Barry Robertson - ATO; Cynthia Fort - Secretary and George Knight - Executive Officer. Our new members and the experienced Bridge members returning this year will provide our Squadron with renewed initiatives, energy and direction. All we need to add to this formula is member input and participation. Please set aside Sunday, August 15, 2010, 13:00 hours for our second Sail Past and dinner at the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club. We are preparing our Fall and Winter Courses, the Speaker's Series and additional training and safety Seminars. So please contact any Bridge member if you have suggestions or see a need that CPS could address to support safe boating on our Bay of Quinte. My first official function was to represent our Squadron at the 82nd Annual Review of the Belleville Sea Cadets on May 30, The Officers and Ship's Company presented an impressive display of music, marching and seamanship. We need to support these young men and women in their contributions to our boating community. I wish everyone a summer of fair winds and pleasurable boating. 1

June 2010 MEMBERSHIP REPORT Ruth Still, MEMBERSHIP OFFICER, S, (613) Just a word of congratulations to all our new graduates! The knowledge and skills learned should help provide you and your families with a lifetime of safe enjoyment on the water. As members of this nationwide organization, you are now free to fly the CPS flag, and enjoy the many benefits of membership, including the pride of belonging to a world-class boating organization. Welcome aboard! New Member Terry Livingstone proudly flying the flag Have you forgotten to renew your CPS Membership? It is not too late! Your may mail your completed renewal form and your cheque, made out to the Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons, to CPS Headquarters at 29 Golden Gate Court, Scarborough ON, M1P 3A5. Or you may prefer to pay by Visa, MasterCard or online. Just follow the instructions on your invoice. If you have misplaced your invoice, just call the Squadron Membership line at (613) and they will assist you. Just a reminder, your CPS Boat Insurance lapses if your membership is not renewed. Only members in good standing are entitled to benefit from our CPS boat insurance and, of course, fly the CPS flag. Also worth noting, the more CPS boating courses you take, the lower your insurance premium will be! But more importantly, they will undoubtedly provide you with more self-assurance, for any challenges which your boat, and/or the weather may present. Our courses, as you know, are taught by dedicated and qualified volunteer instructors, and are held in high regard by the boating community. We appreciate all of your continued support! By renewing your membership you help our volunteers to continue increasing safety and pleasure on the waterways, in promoting safe boating through education. Change of Address, etc.? Please let me know if you have any changes to address, phone number, account or boat name so that we can keep our membership lists up to date. Docking Discount Tip of the Bay Hotel and Marina in Picton will offer weekend docking at a discount for Bay of Quinte Squadron members in good standing. You should be in possession of your membership card. It has become apparent that many of our members have backgrounds consisting of experience and qualifications which could be of benefit to our organization. Feel free to contact me if you wish to personally volunteer your time and/or expertise during the upcoming year. You are most welcome to do so. In closing, I wish you, your family and friends a safe and wonderful summer! 2

RECREATIONAL VESSEL COURTESY CHECK P/Cdr, Dale Holland, AP On Saturday May 29, Mike Sale and Maxine Holland assisted with a Safe Boating Awareness event at George St. Boat Ramp, and Meyers Pier. We conducted 10 RVCC Courtesy checks. We were also pleased to have John Pecek, Belleville City Fire Department's Fire Prevention Officer attended. Many thanks to John, he provided many useful fire fighting hints, and answered many boaters questions. We learned that that according to Provincial Fire Regulations, if your vessel is equipped with cooking and sleeping facilities it is recommended that you have a working smoke detector. Also remember to check your Fire Extinguishers every month. Fire Extinguishers are to be professionally serviced or replaced after 6 years. When looking to purchase fire extinguishers, you buy the highest ratings. Ed. Note: due to the large amount of information in the last newsletter, we did not have room to include this much overdue thank you. LASAGNA DINNER Sandy Gill, Social Officer The annual Lasagna Dinner held on March 5, 2010 was a great success. Thanks to all who attended. Once again it was a sellout. I would like to thank my excellent crew, Sue Jordan, Layne and Julie Butler, John and Joan Boor, Bob and Joanne Skelsey and Dennis Gill for their assistance. The proceeds will be presented to the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club in appreciation for the use of their facilities for registrations, graduations, the AGM, etc. throughout the year. OUR THOUGHTS Special thoughts go out to our members who are experiencing poor health due to surgery, cancer treatments and other disabilities and illnesses. With respect no names are mentioned and we hope that the coming year will see a great improvement in your health. 3

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT - JUNE 2010 Bill Still, Environmental Officer, S Bugs on Boats Anyone who has owned a boat has probably been through the difficult process of trying to rid the boat of bugs, once they are there. Of course, some bugs are worse than others. Cockroaches and Weevils are the dreaded two for any type of boat, although rats, mosquitoes and even snakes can cause the most sanguine sailor to go into a frenzy. The most dangerous of all are rats, as these can chew your electrical fittings to pieces while you sleep at night. Weevils are benign little characters who don't eat a lot, but the sight of all your muesli hanging together in stringy blobs is less than elegant. As for cockroaches, while these are only prevalent in some parts of the world, they are cause of the most shuddering and can really put you off your breakfast. Funnily enough, all the solutions are very inexpensive, but they need to be thought about BEFORE you go on that longer cruiser. Here are the Seven Quick Rules that will prevent bugs or at least give you a solution if the worst happens: SEVEN RULES: Never bring cardboard onboard. Bugs love living in the seams. Keep all open food stuffs in air tight plastic containers or zip lock bags. Weevils - If already present, microwave offending food for five minutes or deep freeze for two hours. Note: weevils are very small but HIGH IN PROTEIN. Remember to choose the 'lesser of two weevils'! Insert bay leaves in all grain product containers. Bag and carry a rat trap on board. Place a funnel or flower pot on your lines. Cockroaches - commercial products are like candy to roaches. You need BORIC ACID and ICING SUGAR, mixed together, rolled into balls and dropped everywhere all over the boat, especially into all lockers and dark corners. They will eventually dissolve, but if you want to retrieve/replace them later, put them on small pieces of aluminum foil. Mosquito coils, should be burned upwind at hatches and boat entrances. EFFECTIVE MOSQUITO COCKTAIL Take a white dish with water and a few drops of Lemon Fresh Joy liquid detergent, and set the dish down outside on deck. Not sure why this works, the lemon smell, the white plate colour, or what, but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh Joy/water mixture, and usually within about 10 feet of the plate. Check this out---it works just super! May seem trivial, but it may help control mosquitoes on your boat and around your home. 5

June 2010 "HOT DOCKS" P/CDR, Jim Bell, Public Relations Officer, S. There are over a hundred documented cases where a person jumped into the water at a marina and was shocked by an electrical current. Almost half ended in fatality and some of those fatalities were the people who jumped in to rescue the original victim. The victim may or may not have inhaled water. An electrical current in the water that is as little as amps can pass through someone's body causing muscular skeletal paralysis and 0.05amps can cause heart fibrillation. There has been no recorded electric shock in sea water. The mineral content makes the sea water more conductive than a human body. The electrical current takes the more conductive path around the body through the sea water. The most common occurrences of electric shock drowning involve children swimming off marina docks or jumping off swim platforms in a marina. Wake boarders, Jet skiers, windsurfers and people sitting on a dock with their feet in the water can become victims. In a marina it takes two electrical faults to create a lethal situation. There might be a short in the shore power system, (in the pedestal or a faulty or unapproved shore cord) and a fault in the boat or there might be faults in two boats in close proximity and plugged into the same shore power supply. The current that emanates from one of these faults is called a "stray current". It is what eats away our sacrificial zincs or anodes. When a stray current is traveling through water it is called a water path. It is usually caused by a poorly installed circuit or fittings that are not marine approved. It can also be caused by damp conditions or a leak from electrical components such as pumps, refrigerators or battery chargers. You should use weather tight power boxes, electrical receptacle boxes and shore power cords that are approved by Transport Canada. Connections should be avoided in the bilge and other wet areas. It is clear that many complications can arise and Transport Canada approval does not guarantee that the electrical systems are safe. Chaffing caused by the working of the hull and animals chewing wires while the boat is in storage can also cause faults. A water path can also occur between two boats that are rafted to each other, so caution should be taken here as well. City Electricians check our docks regularly for improper shore cord connections. If your boat is in a Meyers Pier or Victoria Park, and you have an improper installation expect it to be disconnected. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. 6

STOCK YOUR VESSEL WITH LIFEJACKETS FROM CPS LIFEJACKET In June 2009, CPS singed a Memorandum of Agreement with Salus Marine, a Canadian manufacturer of lifejackets located in Kitchener, Ontario. Salus has received several awards including one from the Canadian Safe Boating Council for introduction of a lifejacket suitable for an infant. Under the agreement, CPS acquired lifejackets from Salus for the CPS Recreational Vessel Courtesy Check (RVCC) program. The standard gold lifejackets without pockets feature the CPS flag on front and the back. CPS members can now purchase one of these lifejackets through Ships Store at a cost of $76.00 each plus tax and shipping charges. This is a 15% saving off regular retail price and an excellent price for the quality of lifejacket you will receive. Shipping costs will be $7 for one lifejacket and $10 if you order two, anywhere in Canada. Please place your order online at Ships Store or call Lynda Green at CPS Headquarters CPS-BOAT. FOR SALE Bay of Quinte Squadron members who have surplus boating items for sale may advertise in this column at no charge.
