Screwing up is Easy! THE LOG A Publication of the Fredericton Yacht Club Pre-Launch May 2005 The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men, gang aft agley, an' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, for promis'd joy! I should have remembered what Robbie Burns had said. The idea was to pull Andiamo! ahead a few feet so that she d be away from Imagination and we could work on the rubrail and paint a stripe on her. I d get my brother Ken and his invincible Xterra to yank her forward, and we d be away to the races. Simple, eh? I wish I had stayed home with a single malt and a bag of Smart Food. Instead, I gamely decided to remove the rubrail before the big yank forward and then call Ken. I succeeded in pulling off the mildewed vinyl rail, and got the trailer ready for the pull. I backed Ken up to the hitch, bang on the first try. That was the last thing that went well. Ken decided wisely it seemed that it being my boat, I should have the honours of wrecking something. I put the Xterra into low 4-wheel, made sure Ken was watching everything, and proceeded to rev her up and yank her loose. She pulled hard and I could smell that tell-tale smell of burning clutch, so I gave her a little more gas and less clutch. A lurch and she was free! I stopped after three feet to check her out and found that she was now leaning her rubrailless self against Imagination. On closer inspection, I noted that she had rubbed through Bob s tarp and we were fiberglass against fiberglass. Ouch It became clear that the lurch was the trailer tires on the port side coming out of the hole that they d settled into over the winter, and thereby leaning Andiamo over intimately against Imagination. We feverously cranked down the cradle supports on the port side, and raised them on starboard, levering her off Imagination. Phew. We re clear, let s pull her out of there to safety. Yeah, sure. Taking the wheel again, I pulled her forward, admonishing Ken to make sure we were clear. 10 feet later came a cry of STOP!! What the $&*# now? Well, we had managed to hook onto another tarp, this time on Gryphon. A nice rip, about 4 feet long. At this point, I decided that I had done enough damage and called it quits. To make a long story short, the welt was rubbed out (by Bob) and the tarp will be repaired. My ego will require much stroking in order to be renewed. The lessons learned? 1. Next year, make sure that there is at least three feet between each and every boat in the yard. 2. Have a good lookout, preferably have the neighbors around when you move. 3. When you do something well, nobody notices but when you screw up, the world is your audience.e neighbors. So let s make this the worst thing that happens this year and BE SAFE. Launch time approaches and this is when things can get hairy. Take your time, look around and be aware of all the hazards. Your safety is your responsibility. Please read the Rear Commodore s suggestions for launch protocol. Determine who the launch captain is and follow their lead. Wear a hard hat and other safety gear. Only one person should be directing the crane, and that person should stay at that post during the entire launch in order to reduce confusion. Mike Corbett (standing WELL back) DON T FORGET YARD CLEANUP AND DOCK LAUNCH DAY MAY 21 TH LOTS OF HELP NEEDED!

The Log - Page 3 Pre-Launch May 2005 From the Rear Commodores - Mark Sanford and Mike Cashin Sr. The following is a few notes regarding the preparations for the Spring Launch. 1. Spring Work Days Depending upon the water levels, May 21 th targeted as the day for the spring work day. Work to be done includes Installation of the docks, Installation of moorings, clean up of garbage and debris in yard and other yard maintenance as required. We NEED people, particularly those who possess knowledge on how the docks are assembled. 2. General Reminders a. Security - Ladders are to be locked to your own cradle to eliminate break-ins to the boats. Checks will be made and unsecured ladders will be locked. - Always lock the yard gates when entering or leaving the compound particularly in the evenings. Do not assume you that there are other members still left in the yard. Remember that yard security is the member s responsibility and that your boat is at risk in an unlocked yard! - Keys are available from both Rear Commodores. You must turn in old key or otherwise pay a $10 deposit b. Waste - All waste oils & chemicals are to be removed from the yard and disposed of properly by the boat owners. The club is not responsible for hazardous waste disposal. - All large items such as wood, heads etc. are to be removed from the yards by members. c. Dock Etiquette - Please remove your boat off the docks as soon as possible after launching. Extended stays on the docks are not allowed as the large numberof members need access to a relatively small amount of dock space. Please be considerate. 3. Launch Procedures Review a. The lifts are non-fyc sponsored events. They are organized by groups if individuals who assume all risks and costs associated with the lift in and out. b. New members are encouraged to sign up with a lift captain/group early to avoid being left out. c. Members which have boats that are not being put in must be prepared to have their boat moved around the yard to allow access to others in behind. d. Launch captains are asked to register their planned lift days with the Rear Commodores to avoid scheduling conflicts. A schedule will be posted on the shed. e. Members must attend the Lift Planning Meeting usually held the night before. Important details such as the assignment of tasks and review of safety procedures happen here. f. No vehicles are to be parked in the yard during lifts for safety and allow easier movement of boats. g. Please work safe. Wear hard hats and beware of the dangers prevalent when working around heavy equipment.

The Log - Page 4 Pre-Launch May 2005 Race/Tour June 4 th St John River Each year the club uses the first race of the season as a fund raiser for charity. This year we are raising money to support places at the sailing school for kids from PARTNERS FOR YOUTH. Last year the club enabled three kids to sail; this year the objective is to help six. Learning to sail is a great activity and confidence booster see the letter about last year from PfY. Each boat entering the race raises funds for the charity. There is a competition among the fund raisers and a trophy for the boat raising the largest amount. This year some skippers are getting creative and selling places on their boats for the race. The sailing school is the high profile community project for FYC. Please help to make the day a success and a success for the kids. Note from the Commodore: We will be asking members to COMMIT THEIR BOAT to the race, fill their boat with their friends (we suggest $25 per seat) and at least take a tour of the course if they do not wish to actually race. We will offer a second start for touring class to ensure that they can hit the line for fun and charity.

The Log - Page 5 Pre-Launch May 2005 Speaking of fund raising, we are close to our goal for the boats. Another $10000 would put us over-thetop for the 420s and Optimists. Most of you have honoured your pledges from the campaign last fall. If you still have a pledge outstanding, please honour it - we need your help. We will be selling tickets on a print by local artist Laurie Winter, donated by Anne and Mike (Andiamo) with framing donated by Andy and Giselle (Joy of Framing) titled Pride of Fredericton with proceeds going to FYSS. Social Activities Charity Race This year the social activities associated with the Charity Race are focused on everyone (racers and nonracers alike) having a good time while at the same time raising some money for the Club s official charity for 2005 i.e. the Fredericton Youth Sailing School. There will be a barbeque after the race with hotdogs, soft drinks etc. Donations will be welcome with the proceeds going to help sponsor local young people so they can have a sailing experience that they would otherwise not be able to afford. In addition, there will be a nautical yard sale. This is an ideal opportunity to acquire a boat related item that you have always wanted but perhaps didn t know until you saw it. It is also an opportunity to clear out your garage or basement of no longer used boating items. Those members selling items will be encouraged to donate all or a portion of the proceeds to the Fredericton Youth Sailing School scholarships and if they do, they will receive a tax receipt from Sport NB. The yard sale will be operational for the duration of the race; however, it items will be sold on a first come first served basis so come early to have the best choice. Date June 4 th Location FYC Fredericton Yard Sale Start 11 am Race Start 12 noon BBQ Start 3 pm Paul Smith Vice Commodore

The Log - Page 6 Pre-Launch May 2005 Jim Ingraham Race Committee but I m not a racer Well, let s see about that. Have you ever been out on the water with another boat near you going the same direction? Admit it did you perhaps tweak those sails a little, or perhaps pay a little more attention, or maybe just found yourself leaning forward a little as if to coax a little extra speed? If not then you are indeed a rare breed of sailor, but for the rest of us, the call runs deep whether we like to admit it or not. So let s look at some options. One thing racing will do for you is hone your sailing skills for general use and provide you with an opportunity to try various settings to observe how it affects your performance against other boats. You ll also learn about reading the wind and water to improve your tactics in both light and heavy airs. Then, of course, there are always the social gatherings after the race where we all have an opportunity to lie about our speeds and blame the wind for all our woes. You may even win a prize. To this day I am grateful to those members who convinced me to try racing even though I was a complete novice and had a dog for a boat. I learned a great deal, met some wonderful people and had fun. Look Henri, if you can bicycle through Holland, you can lift your damn leg over the lifeline

The Log - Page 7 Pre-Launch May 2005 If you are interested but still feeling timid or don t keep your boat at Grand Lake, simply come down to Douglas Harbour on race day (by noon) and make it known that you d like to crew. I haven t seen anyone left behind yet! You ll learn a lot that way as well and have fun doing it. Finally, I encourage all of you to get involved with the Charity Race being held on June 4. It is being held right here in Fredericton which is an easy course. So check out the race schedule here or on the FYC web site and come on down! Even if you are not a racer, it s always fun to sail quickly. See you on the water. 10 The Log - Page 10 Pre-Launch May 2005 Mike McKendy - DOUGLAS HARBOUR As I had reported earlier, we made good progress last fall in relation to the Douglas Harbour Improvement Project. We did, however, encounter several challenges and submitted a request for additional funding to ensure completion of the project in line with the original intent. We identified three areas where anticipated costs have increased from our original budget: Increased cost of Septic System Requirement for wharf-side dock for pump-out, and Increased costs for the welcome centre. I am pleased to report that funding for this project has been from the original $100,081 to $149,417. Progress Report Waste Pump-out Facility All required approvals received Pump-out purchased and delivered to storage facility at Douglas Harbour. Welcome Centre Building permit obtained. On site Septic System permit obtained. Septic field installed Bids obtained from three of four invited contractors. Contractors informed we could not proceed this past fall but revised specifications and a new invitation to tender are anticipated for early spring subject to approval of additional funds. Specifications and Plans have been revised and we hope to send out to prospective contractors in early May. New Dinghy Docks Dinghy docks purchased and delivered to site. They were prematurely water tested this past weekend as the water levels rose in Grand Lake and the docks were floating in the field. Thanks to Dave Estey, they have been tied up and should not escape. At least we know they float. Guest Moorings Most materials for guest moorings have been purchased. Pouring of moorings and placement to be done in spring. Pontoon boat and motor have been purchased to create mooring tender. The Rear Commodores and Brian Lackie and Howard Libby have figured on a concept for the lifting device and it is progressing well. Potable Water Supply Well has been examined and, upon considering cost and risks of remediation, we have decided to drill a new well. Well was drilled in September Will be able to use existing pump to save costs. Douglas Harbour August 04
