1 Commodore s Report Once again, the boats are safely out of the water. As far as I am aware, with one exception, the lifts went smoothly. The weather more or less co-operated, and we now turn to the unpleasant task of putting on the coverings and hoping for an early spring. The one incident involved dropping a mast, and is yet another message that constant care and vigilance are necessary during launch and retrieval. The Rear Commodores and the lift captains are to be congratulated for the efficient storing of the boats. The yard is about full, and in fact would be if the four boats that are away were to return. I think the storage problem will have to be revisited in the near future. We may have a stroke of good luck here. Discussions with Laurie Corbett of the City have revealed that the City intends to install a sewage force main through the yard property, probably next year. They are prepared to work closely with us to ensure that the lifts and the construction are co-ordinated. It is possible that we could persuade them to drop the excavation materials in the gully at the upriver end of the yard and obtain some additional storage space as a result. The Executive has attempted to exercise fiscal restraint this year so as to put the Club on a firmer financial foundation. As you will hear at the AGM, I think we have been successful in this. Elsewhere in this Newsletter, you will hear details of our activities, so I shall not repeat them here. One of the highlights of the year for me was the Derek Hatfield presentation/discussion at the spring meeting. I have been following Derek s progress with great interest. If you have not been doing so, I recommend his website to you. On a less positive note, I sometimes feel that Douglas Harbour is slipping away from our control. We will discuss the problem at the Meeting and try and find ways to reassert ourselves. 3 Commodore Report from page 1 Unfortunately, there is a negative side to what I have to say in this report. What I feel I must say is not original with me. I have heard the same comments from other Commodores at the end of their terms. On October 26, we took the docks out fo the water. The work party consisted of about 16 people, six of whom were current executive members and several more who had formerly served on the executive. It seems to me that every time there is a work party, the usual suspects appear. As members, we are all expected to participate in the tasks that need doing. Every member should participate in at least one work party every year. No one is expected to participate in all of them, though it is clear that a minority of members do so. My estimate is that fewer than half of the members participate in these maintenance activities. Looked at differently, more than half of the membership is getting a free ride. There never seems to be a shortage of people looking for moorings - after they have been raised in the spring. Most discouraging is the fact that, of those who have joined the Club over the past few years, only ONE appeared at this work party, and new members have been under represented at other times as well. We do these things for ourselves so as to keep the membership and storage fees at a reasonable level. We all need to recognize that if we can t get adequate participation from members, these activities will have to be contracted out - and club fees will have to increase significantly. I want to thank the other members of the Executive for their efforts and support during the past year. In most cases, their workload has been heavier than my own. I have also received some sound advice from several senior club members for which I am most grateful. Finally, I have reread my rant above regarding the need for participation - and have decided to leave it as it is. FYC sailor compete in national championships Judy and Brian Mills trailered their Wayfarer dinghy to Ottawa this July to participate in the Canadian National Wayfarer Championships. The 5 race event was held at the Lac Du Chene Sailing Club. Judy and Brian missed being the best male/female crew in the regatta by one point. Overall they finished 8 th and were awarded the best rookie award. The Mills are attempting to qualify for the World Championships to be held in Ontario in MACTAQUAC SAILING ASSOCIATION REVIVES SAILBOAT RACING ON THE MACTAQUAC HEADPOND. For the first time in over 15 years, over 12 sailors participate in each of the three Sunday afternoon racing events. The fleet included a wide variety of boats including Lighting, CL 16, Wayfarers, Kirby 25, Tanzer 26s, Star, PY23 and so on. Sailors interested in participating next years racing are invited to join the Mactaquac Sailing Association ($10 per year dues). There is a $5 entry fee for each race to help defer the costs of the races. 3

4 Publicity Chair Report Six issues of the Log have been produced this year on a bi-monthly basis. I want to thank all those who submitted articles and information. Without your contribution, the Log would not be so interesting. The mailing list is very useful and quick. 70 members are already on the list. To add your address to the list, please let me know and we will update our records. Also, don t forget to notify us of any change. I have been trying to acquire the DNS( domain name server) for the Yacht Club, and I finally succeeded. I had some problems because this DNS is in conflict with another DNS. owned by the Fanshawe Yacht Club. Fanshawe Yacht Club is located on the shores of Fanshawe Lake in London Ontario. They gave me the permission to use the DNS but asked me to put a link to their Website to prevent confusion. That is why if you visit our Website you can see a link to the Website of Fanshawe. I want to add the history of the Club and more. Older members, please share with us your precious knowledge of the Club s history. You can now read the Log from the Net. Marc-Antoine Demers Editors/Publicity FYC Rear Commodores Report Yard activities this past season at Fredericton base have been routine. Some large trees were cut, weeds and small brush were removed, and repairs to the storage shed and upper dock area were carried out. The docks are in great shape with only 3 requiring some repairs. The cradle lift trailer was serviced including the hydraulic hoses and the wheels and tires. The pontoon boat leaks were found and weld repaired. A used 15 hp outboard was purchased to replace the one that was stolen off the pontoon boat early in the season. Diving on moorings recovered 6 that were considered lost. Many of the mooring anchor blocks have sunk into the mud or have been covered over with river bottom deposits making the block impossible to inspect. Some have obviously moved and are not useable in their present location. Those that cannot be successfully raised and/or relocated will have to be replaced next season. The GPS position of each mooring was noted prior to dropping them. Considerable work in this area will be required next season to re-establish the mooring field to a satisfactory state of repair. Fred Harriman Rear Commodore Howard Libby Rear Commodore Locked Ladders: Until your boat is covered over, your ladder should be removed and stored on the ground locked to your cradle. Your transom ladder should also be left in the upright position. This will prevent any unauthorized person from using your ladder to access your boat or use your boat as a way to get on your neighbors boat. Once your boat is covered, your ladder can be locked to your transom if you so desire putting only your boat in jeopardy. 4

We are unfortunately still unable to attract new members to racing. The start line was improved which made the starts easier. A recommendation to switch to acrylic glasses was favourably received. A staring procedure to allow the Committee boat crew to participate was discussed among the race participants and could be developed to be implemented next year.
