1 TELLTALE Eastern Shore Sailing Association P.O. Box 374 Salisbury, MD May Bridge Members Commodore Betsy Cottingham Vice Commodore Ken Kundell Secretary Greig & Linda Mitchell Treasurer Dave Stapleford Choptank Fleet Captain Paul West Tangier Fleet Captain Del Walter Race Chairperson Bruce Franz Past Commodore John Motsko FROM THE MASTHEAD When you receive this issue of the Telltale, I ll be heading back from the South Pacific, where we sailed around the Tahitian islands of Raiatea, Tahaa, Huahine and Bora Bora on a 48 catamaran, sailing into crystal clear lagoons near volcanic peaks with the scent of fragrant orchids being carried by the gentle trade winds. I ll have more details upon my return, which I will be more then glad to share with you, whether you want to hear them or not. ESSA is trying to get plan a bareboat charter for members and their guests in early 2008 to Belize or the British Virgin Islands. It is great fun and I hope you will join us. More information follows in the Telltale; please take the time to respond so that we may plan to better meet your needs. Yearbook supplements will be available in the next few weeks, and fleet captains will be distributing them to ESSA members. It will contain a list of all members with their phone numbers and addresses; making it easier to obtain crew for a race or afternoon sail. Also, please be sure to patronize the businesses that are supporting ESSA by placing ads in the yearbook supplement. The sailing season is here; hope your boat is ready, as mine is not. We have lots planned for the season; cruises, raft ups, crew swaps, crew training, and races and as always, Fun in the Sun. Make sure to check out the calendar each month to see the events scheduled. Cambridge races begin on Wednesday, May 2 and the Tangier fleet begins with a tune-up race on Thursday, May 10. We have several new boats in both fleets and several new members ready, willing and able to crew. It should be a grand season of racing. Have a safe season on the water and if you have any suggestions for ESSA, please feel free to share them with me or your Fleet Captain. Wish you were here. Betsy Cottingham, Commodore 1
2 ESSA Bridge Meeting The next Bridge meeting will be held on Monday, May 7, 2007, at 6:30 pm at the home of Greig & Linda Mitchell. All ESSA members are invited to attend. TRUE OR FALSE 1. When two boats are tacking at the same time, the one that passed head to wind first has the right of way. 2. Two boats on opposite tacks can be overlapped. (Stand on your head to read the answers.) Webmaster Tim Fuhrmann SailingBum@writebyte.net FOR SALE Ads must be submitted to the Telltale editor th by the 20 of each month, and, for items previously posted, the editor must be contacted by the 20 th of the month if the ad is to continue. Update on Cedar Hill Marina Entranceway In the fall of 2006, ESSA and Wicomico County Recreation & Parks teamed together to clean-up and replant the entranceway to Cedar Hill Marina. The county repaired the brick sign holder, Deke Sheller and his crew removed the ground cover of oyster shells, John & Janine Motsko planted the various perennials (provided by the County), and mulch was put in place. When this project was begun, some Tangier Fleet members volunteered their services. The time has now come where some more hands are needed. There s no getting around it weeds are now making the entranceway their new home. For those of you who said you would help, grab your gardening gloves and get some upper body exercise by pulling out these nasty little invaders. Please contact Janine Motsko ( or janinemotsko@comcast.net) if you can help with this maintenance, which needs to be done SOON and won t take up much of your time. 2
3 CHOPTANK NEWS Paul West, Choptank Fleet Captain For those of you who missed the Choptank Fleet Meeting, here's what you missed... To improve our night sailing skills, it was decided to begin all races at 8:30 pm. Since most restaurants will be closed when the races are over we will now meet at P laza Tapatia at 6pm for a chugging contest of Dos Equis Grandes. Winners of the contest will be granted an extra throw out for the series...or was it a throw up... my memory is a little fuzzy on that one. The use of Q-beam spotlights or other high powered spotlights is enc ouraged to help illuminate your competitors so you don't hit them. T o eliminate the need for all that race committee non-sense, all races will begin and end at the dock. I'll honk the horn in my truck once, maybe twice and we'll all head out from there. First one out of the marina sets the course, all others must follow it simplifies the scoring. Sails must be raised and lowered in the slip, no engines allowed, and sails cannot be lowered at the end of the race until your boat is tied up in the slip where it resides i.e.: no slip trading. For those of you who missed the meeting, there is a grain of truth in the above... you just have to figure out what it is. How To Tell When Sailboat Racing Is In Your Blood... At Paul Hull s recommendation we purchased Dave Perry s book Winning in One Design and it turns out we have something in common as he said he found him self yelling UP UP UP at other cars when merging with traffic. I too have been finding myself thinking of driving in racing terms and here are a few I ve caught myself saying or thinking... You never run a red light you are just "over early" You refer to going thru an intersection on a yellow li ght as "port tacking the fleet" You refer to taking a short cut as "taking a flier" You refer to a traffic jam as being in "dirty air" When asked how you got to the restaurant before everyone else, you say you "tacked out at the last light" Finally, when someone tries to merge into your lane you find yourself yelling "NO ROOM CAPTAIN, NO ROOM!! " Hopefully I ll have more in common with Mr. Perry one of these days but until then I ll be content to think like a winner even if it s just on the road. Paul West TANGIER NEWS Del Walter, Tangier Fleet Captain May 10 will be a tune up race. SERIES I: MAY 17- JUNE 21 SERIES II: JUNE 28 - AUGUST 2 SERIES III: AUGUST 9 - SEPTEMBER 13 CAPT. CUP SEPT. 2 Committee rotation will be; Sheller- May 17, Stapleford- May 24, Walter- May 31, Franz- June 7, Gooch- June 14, Williams- June 21. This rotation will repeat for all three series. Each of the above mentioned skippers will be responsible for starting both divisions on their respective night as committee boat. Each division will be responsible for scoring their boats only. The first boat to finish in each division will record the scores or times for their own division only. 3
4 THE JOHN SMITH 400 On or about May 26 th the shallop Nauticus will enter the mouth of the Nanticoke River on its journey to Phillips Landing, Seaford, DE and Vienna. The ESSA bridge has offered the John Smith 400 organization an option of staying in Bivalve Harbor on their way up the Nanticoke from Onancock, VA. While their schedule will be up in the air, we have a verbal confirmation they will consider stopping in Bivalve either on the way up the river or on the way back from Vienna to the Patuxent River and beyond. Regardless of staying in Bivalve or not, several ESSA members will meet the shallop and welcome her crew as they enter the Nanticoke. We will be able to tract their progress through the interactive map on the web site, This web site also has loads of information on the history and the upcoming journey. Please visit it to find out more. If you are interested in participating, please call John Motsko. This will be a historic event; don t miss it. The History On June 2, 1608, Captain John Smith and fourteen English colonists set out from Jamestown in a 30-foot open boat or "shallop" to explore and map the Chesapeake Bay. Traveling over 1,700 miles in just over three months, Smith and his men witnessed the Chesapeake at its productive peak, with its incredible ecosystem intact and a multitude of American India n cultures thriving along its shores. The observations and sketches made by Smith during his travels would form the basis for his remarkable 1612 map of the Bay, which served as the definitive rendering of the region for nearly a century. The Re-enactment In the summer of 2007 a crew of modern-day explorers, historians, naturalists and educators will endeavor to retrace Captain John Smith's incredible 1608 expedition. Traveling in a 28-foot reproduction of Smith's shallop, and living much as Smith and his men did 400 years ago, the shallop and her crew will spend 121-days voyaging to the headwaters of almost every tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. At more than 20 points along the route, the shallop and her crew will stop for public exhibitions so that people from all around the region can learn about this important episode in the history of the Chesapeake. The Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail Sultana's Captain John Smith Four Hundred Project is proud to help inaugurate the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, America's first all-water National Historic Trail. Established in 2006 by an Act of Congress, the trail follows the routes of John Smith's 17th century Chesapeake Bay explorations. Overseen by the National Park Service, the John Smith Trail will allow modern-day adventurers to explore the Chesapeake while learning about Native American history, early English settlement and the Chesapeake's abundant natural resources. The NOAA Buoy System & The John Smith Trail The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Verizon Wireless and several other partners are currently developing a series of "smart buoys" to guide adventurers along the John Smith Trail. Part of a broader trail-marking effort by the National Park Service, these state-of-the-art buoys will serve as scientific observation platforms and educational resources. Accessible through the Internet and cellular phones, the buoys will provide important cultural, geographic and historical information while transmitting real-time scientific data to the World Wide Web. Three fully functioning prototype buoys have already been deployed to test the technology for this new system. 4
