3 Commodores KATHY ST. AMANT Commodore Kathy started sailing with the CSULB sailing team, owned a Santana 20 and Martin 242, skippered Catalina 37s for the WSA Long Beach and MdR women s teams and the WSASMB winning team in the 2006 Regata Femenil Las Marietas in PV, Mexico. She coaches Sea Gals events in Long Beach, sailed to HI as navigator and races with friends on anything that floats, often as co-skipper. She now races a Corinthian class 38-foot sailboat, Rascal, which she thinks is a race boat. She held a USCG 100 T Masters license for 10 years. She is a two-time recipient of the YRUSC Yachtswoman Excellence award, is a past member of Windjammers YC & SMWYC. Kathy is a current member of South Coast Corinthian YC. She serves as ASMBYC s webmaster, is on the board of directors of the Marina del Rey Historical Society, and is a Director of SCYA. JAMES (JIM) GARVEY Vice Commodore Jim has been in Marina del Rey since He and his wife, Carol have a sailboat built in 1933 that they have cruised locally and around the Pacific during a three-year trip to Australia and back. They were members of the Wooden Hull Owners Association (now Wooden Hull Yacht Club) from the early 1970s until the early 1990s, and have been members of Del Rey Yacht Club since Jim has held a variety of Bridge and Board positions at DRYC, including Port Captain, serving on the Board of Directors, and is currently Treasurer. He served on the Race Committee for many years, mostly on the Committee Boat, while Carol did race entry and scoring tasks. His racing was limited to the annual One More Time Regatta on their boat winning his class several times and overall once - and occasionally crewing in other races. He is retired, having worked as a program manager in the corporate world for 25 years, and as a self-employed technical and management consultant for 20 years after that. JOHN RUSHING Rear Commodore John is a blue water sailor and racer who sails out of Marina del Rey. John has been a trophy winner in three consecutive Newport to Ensenada races, as well as a trophy winner in the Santa Barbara to King Harbor race. He competes his boat, Leilani in Wednesday night races as well as local point-to-points, and he and his young team are beginning to get their sea legs when it comes to buoy racing. John has crewed both the 2015 Newport to Cabo and the 2015 Transpac races. John sailed to Antarctica and rounded Cape Horn in In 2017, John was crew on Wolfhound, the official US entry for the 11 Meter Scandinavian Nationals. John also sits on the local area board for PHRF and is a member of Del Rey Yacht Club. When he is not sailing, John is an actor working in television and film. He is a private on-set coach for named talent, and he teaches acting classes at the Zak Barnett Studio. John earned a B.A. in philosophy from Calvin College, a Master of Philosophy from Oxford University, and a J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law. 6 Sportsman of the Year For exceptional and consistent fairness, courtesy, gracefulness and/ or heroism in yachting activities. PEGGY POWERS, CYC Six years ago, Peggy wanted to help with Race Committee, but couldn t go out on the water because she got seasick. She s been scoring regattas for California Yacht Club ever since. Conversant in four, and soon to be five, scoring programs, Peggy volunteers for weekend regattas and the 21-race Sunset Series, which often draws more than 80 entries on any given Wednesday night. She s a perfectionist, and it shows in her work. She won t rest until scores are correct, and always performs these duties with fairness, courtesy and grace. Junior Sportsman of the Year For exceptional and consistent fairness, courtesy, gracefulness and/or heroism in yachting activities. HARRY BRYAN, CYC Now 10 years old and in fifth grade, Harry has been part of the California Yacht Club junior program and race team for three years. In that time, he moved from the Opti Green Fleet to Champ Fleet. He never misses a practice or an opportunity to get on the water. In August, Harry finished in the top half at the Opti Nationals in Norfolk, Virginia, and qualified for the USA Team Trials. He goes out of this way to help every one of his teammates, and regardless of his performance, his spirit brightens everyone s day. Awarded to an outstanding racer competing in major regattas held outside of Santa Monica Bay, especially national or international competition. JEFF JANOV, CYC Jeff first became a force in local yacht racing in 1999 when he started campaigning his Schock 35, Ripple, winning the class championship in both 2005 and In 2007, he moved on to the newly competitive J/105 class with Invisible, winning the SoCal Season Championship in that year and again in He moved on to the Farr 40 class with Dark Star in 2009, taking home the SoCal Season Championship trophy every year from 2010 to In 2015, he moved on to the J/70 class with Minor Threat, where his crew often includes one or more of his three sons, who are in the junior program at CYC. He earned the Southern California High Point Championship his first year, then in 2016, and again in Jeff still finds time to keep sailing his favorite big boat, the Farr 40, with past crew mates, his sons, and other CYC juniors. His passion for having juniors on board inspired him to charter OEX, a Santa Cruz 70, for the 2016 Santa Barbara to King Harbor race, where he took fourth in class with six youngsters on board. 4 Competitive Yachting Achievement Award

7 Yachtsman of the Year Presented for creative contributions and exemplary accomplishments to the sport of yachting in Santa Monica Bay. DAVID DOEH, KHYC An accomplished sailboat racer, David works tirelessly with all ASMBYC member clubs to promote their respective programs. He has served as ASMBYC High Point Series Coordinator for the last few years. He was instrumental in organizing the first King Harbor Race Week and continues to serve as co-chair. Over the last three years he has worked with Redondo Beach Yacht Club to help revive the Queen Mary Regatta, their premier race. He is committed to planning, promoting, and finding solutions to the never-ending glitches involved in hosting a successful event. His enthusiasm makes him a pleasure to work with. Junior Yachtsman of the Year Given to a junior under 20 who has demonstrated superior sailing ability along with the highest standards of sportsmanship. GAVIN McJONES, CYC One of California Yacht Club s most outstanding sailors, Gavin competed in more than 30 regattas this past season, generally finishing among the top 10. Highlights include leading the fleet after his first day of Youth Championships; winning a race the US Laser Nationals at Lake Tahoe; winning a race in the Laser Radials at the Orange Bowl Regatta; qualifying as a skipper for the US Sailing Junior Match Racing for the Rose Cup; and finishing first among U.S. sailors, and fifth overall, out of 68 competitors at the ILAC Canada Laser Nationals at Kingston, Canada. David Poe Memorial Yachting Service Award Presented for outstanding contributions of time and/or talent to yachting beyond the recipient s normal obligation. BRONNY DANIELS Local racers may not know Bronny, but they know her photos: JoySailing photographs regattas throughout Southern California, and many of those in Santa Monica Bay. Just ask her, and if she s available, Bronny will come up to photograph your regatta. She does this at no charge, even though she lives in Newport Beach. She ll drive up for the day, and will even stay the night for a multi-day regatta. She willingly shares her photos with club newsletters and websites. She was one of the first photographers to put up albums of yachting events on Facebook, which led to work for Ullman and North Sails, including Ullman s international division. She shoots races big and small, including international events such as Long Beach Yacht Club s Congressional Cup. Bronny doggedly pursues the perfect shot, and her crew and people pictures have endeared her to racers and non-racers alike throughout the wider Southern California yachting community. 5

The series rewards those skippers who sail often, and 2018 promises to be even more popular. Each entry is easy, just sail in the races printed in bold face on the following pages, or designated in this calendar as a High Point Event. Six races are scheduled at each Santa Monica Bay harbor.
