6 For exceptional and consistent fairness, courtesy, gracefulness and/or heroism in yachting activities. Victor Jedlicka, DRYC A 16-year member of DRYC, Vic is an avid and accomplished angler always looking for a way to give back. He has spent 25 years as an MDR Angler member taking children at risk on fishing trips, and is a past Board member. He was co-chair of the largest Halibut Derby in Santa Monica Bay with more than 900 contestants, which raises funds for children-at-risk programs. Vic spent five years developing and running the charity Bass Tournament at Cat Harbor which benefits the Little Red School House at Isthmus, Catalina. He is a five-year volunteer with Sport Spectacular, which raises funds for the Cedars-Sinai pediatric medical genetics program. Off the water, he volunteers at Free to Be Me, a ballet and modern dance program for children with Down syndrome. He has served as SCYA Angler Chair for seven years, and is a past ASMBYC Angler Chair. Within DRYC, Vic developed the Preferred Charter Sailing Program providing access to six Southern California locations and 66 sailboats. He has chaired the Anglers Committee for 13 years and is a five-term member of the Board. In 2017, he received the Commodore s Burgee of Merit for outstanding achievement, twice received the Brian R. Bayer Trophy for Outstanding Achievement in the Advancement of Sport Fishing, and twice received the Outstanding Angler of the Year Trophy. Awarded to an outstanding racer competing in major regattas held outside of Santa Monica Bay, especially national or international competition. DRYC Youth Match Racing Team, DRYC The team of Christopher Weis (skipper), 23, Roberto Stevens, 21, Dylan Finestone, 20, Alex Burrow, 24, and Sidney Gathrid, 18, have sailed together for five years, each with between eight and 15 years of experience. The team was chosen by US Sailing and Dave Perry to represent the United States at the Youth Match Racing World Championship held July 6-9, 2018 in Trentino, Italy, and they brought home a bronze medal from Sportsman of the Year Competitive Yachting Achievement Award Pictured, from left: Christopher Weis, Roberto Stevens, Dylan Finestone, Sidney Gathrid. Not pictured: Alex Burrow this Grade 3 event. Every year since 2015, the team has been one of the 12 teams invited to the Governor s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship at Balboa Yacht Club, and they have finished in the top five each year. In 2017, the team competed in the Musto Youth Match Race, Grade 3, in Sydney, Australia. Closer to home, in 2017 they competed in the three-event California Dreamin Series, Grade 3, earning an invitation to Ficker Cup, Grade 2, which is a qualifier for Congressional Cup. 4

7 Yachtsman of the Year Presented for creative contributions and exemplary accomplishments to the sport of yachting in Santa Monica Bay. Susan Service, CYC A CYC member since 2011, Sue served as Sail Committee Chair in 2016 and 2015, and has chaired important events including the 2017 Laser Midwinters West and the 2018 CFJ Nationals. Sue received SCYA s Peggy Slater Memorial Award in 2015, and served as ASMBYC s Women s Sailing Coordinator in 2010 and Sue has been integral to the success of the online registration system at CYC, working closely with the developers to customize the program for the Sunset Series unique points system. Sue also instituted a new process for organizing protest committees, so that in 2018 there was at least one non-cyc member on 70% of the Sunset Series protest committees formed. An avid racer, Sue has competed in all the major Southern California regattas, as well as Key West Race Week and St. Francis Yacht Club s Big Boat Series. In 2017, Blarney, with Sue among the crew, finished fourth overall in the Martin 242 North American Championship. She has participated in numerous Linda Elias Memorial Women s One Design (LEMWOD) regattas for both WSA-SMB and CYC, including CYC s winning effort in 2013, and was CYC Team Captain in Junior Yachtsman of the Year Given to a junior under 20 who has demonstrated superior sailing ability along with the highest standards of sportsmanship. Patrick Mulcahy, CYC A CYC racer since 2016, in 2018 Patrick specialized as a crew in the C420 class while still racing other classes and also coaching beginner sailors. Some of his results in the C420 included 1st at the C420 National Championship out of 146 competitors, 1st at the C420 Pacific Coast Championship, 4th at the C420 North American Championship, and 1st at the SCYYRA C420 Perry Series. Additionally, in the International 420 class, he won the Pacific Coast Championship and attended the CISA racing clinic. In keelboats, his team placed 3rd at the US Sailing Youth Match Racing Championships, also known as the Rose Cup, and he could be seen regularly crewing on a Martin 242 during the Sunset Series. Junior Sportsman of the Year For exceptional and consistent fairness, courtesy, gracefulness and/or heroism in yachting activities. Palmer Mays, KYHC An essential team member and green fleet sailor at KHYC, at a typical practice you will likely find Palmer helping his teammates rigging and derigging, loaning a sail tie or even wind indicator, and/or staying late to make sure all the gear is picked up and put away. On the water Palmer takes a penalty without question when he fouls another boat, and holds other sailors to the same standard, demanding fairness among his teammates and competitors. Off the water Palmer maintains good rapport with others. Another of Palmer s strengths is his willingness to teach and encourage his fellow teammates. At the Pacific Coast Championship in Long Beach Palmer cheered on a teammate who was winning even though Palmer was mid-fleet in the race. 5

8 David Poe Memorial Yachting Service Award Presented for outstanding contributions of time and/or talent to yachting beyond the recipient s normal obligation. Greg Rutter, SBYRC A native of Southern California, Greg became an active racer in He served as Commodore of SBYRC in 2018, 2017, and He has been active in the annual Introduction to Yacht Racing seminar for about seven years, shepherding interested racers through their first year by bringing them to the Sunset Series seminars, helping them find rides, and bringing them to yachting programs offered by area yacht clubs. Greg promotes yacht racing through journalism, having authored several articles for The Mariner. He has educated himself on the Racing Rules of Sailing, and has taken US Sailing seminars on Race Management and Judging, and is a regular protest committee volunteer. Greg is also a tireless promoter of women s sailing, having served as PRO for the WOW/WAH regatta for many years. Rescue Award To recognize outstanding displays of heroism and compassion including lifesaving, first aid, salvage, or repair. Duncan Cameron and Crew, CYC On May 5, 2018, Mistral was returning from Point Dume in the DRYC Berger Race. Under spinnaker in a good breeze, the boat was suddenly hit by a 25-knot gust. Helmsman Helen Brierley turned sharply to avoid a round-up, but the boat suffered a catastrophic failure of the steering system, causing a knockdown that launched Helen into the side of the boat and then over the guardrail, breaking a couple ribs in the process. As the engine was started, the lack of steering became apparent. A Mayday hail was made on VHF 16, and on the racing channel. Duncan Cameron and his crew on Trust Me, a couple miles behind, heard the call. Communicating with Mistral, Duncan and his crew got to the approximate position of the incident. Crew members diligently monitored an assigned quadrant of a very difficult sea. After minutes a crew member spotted Helen. Duncan brought his boat alongside the tired and hypothermic victim, who had been treading water without a lifejacket, and his strong crew members were able to bring her on board. On the journey to the marina, they comforted and warmed Helen, before delivering her to the emergency services awaiting their arrival, and they remained on station with her until Mistral eventually made her way back to the marina. 26 The Champion of Champions is open to boats that have sailed in two or more events organized by an ASMBYC member club. The boat must have been skippered by the same person in the qualifying events, and that person must be the skipper in the Champion of Champions. Five boats will make a class, and all classes sailed in club events are eligible for the Champion of Champions. 27 ASMBYC HIGH POINT SERIES Many skippers from each Santa Monica Bay harbor sailed the High Point races in 2018 and the best from each harbor earned a trophy. The series rewards those skippers who sail often, and 2019 promises to be even more popular. Each entry is easy, just sail in the races printed in bold face on the following pages, or designated in this calendar as a High Point Event. Six races are scheduled at each Santa Monica Bay harbor. Your best six races will be scored. Boats berthed in Santa Monica Bay will receive a 30% bonus when they sail at the other Santa Monica Bay harbor. Questions? For complete rules and current standings, just visit the ASMBYC website at or contact David Doeh, High Point Series Coordinator or Truebluem242@aol.com.
