2 Atlantic Endeavour 2 Past and Present Built and commissioned by the Sopwith Family, in 1984/85 at the renowned Isle of White shipyard, Souter, the Philante VII was one of the early superyachts designed by famous naval architect and leading yacht designer, Don Shead. She was one of the largest yachts of her time. Featured in a number of major super yacht publications of the day, the Philante VII was built to support the ocean yacht racing of the Sopwith Family as well as operating as a long range cruising yacht, at the upper levels of known luxury and size in her day. 3 Atlantic Endeavour 3 The Endeavour link. In 1937 Sopwith received the yacht Philante ( a twist on the names of Tommy and his wife Phyllis), also built for him by Camper and Nicholsons. She crossed the Atlantic to attend Sopwith's 1937 challenge for the America's Cup with his J Class, the Endeavour* During the Second World War the ship was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and used as a convoy escort vessel, HMS Philante. After the war the vessel was returned to Sopwith and he sold it to Norway in 1947, to be used as a royal yacht for the Norwegian king. She remains in this role today. Philante (I) Sopwith challenged the America's Cup with his J - class yachts Endeavour in 1934, and Endeavour II in Both yachts were designed by Charles E. Nicholson. Sopwith funded, organised and helmed the yachts. He did not win the Cup but he became a Cup legend by nearly winning it in He was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1995.

Philante VII was briefly renamed the Hambra (so the Philante name remained with the family) and she was placed on the market in the South of France, to be sold. Whitbread Round the world, In the Autumn of 1992, Philante VIII was surveyed and accepted in France, then sold and delivered to the new owners on the 16 th December 1992 whilst alongside in the port of Southampton, UK. A company named Marketmaker AB, being the corporate ownership of the Swedish businessman and owner of the famous racing yacht Intrum Justitia, acquired her and continued her yacht racing support traditions. (shortly thereafter by the purchase of a second larger yacht, the CD TWO.) Based in Majorca, due to the acquisition of a second yacht, the CD ONE sadly fell into second place, her history forgotten and her maintenance budget moving elsewhere. From some charters were carried out, but by late in the decade the CD ONE was no longer fully crewed and was heavily marketed for sale. Atlantic Endeavour 2012 present day In 2012, Atlantic Marine and Castle Ship management located the CD ONE, and noting the Don Shead sleek lines combined with some internet research, realized this was a now a classic lady with a classical history to be preserved and enhanced for the future. A piece of yachting history, from a thoroughbred britich shipyard, designed as a leading Super Yacht of her time by one of the all time great designers for one of the most famous yacht racing families in British history. A yacht that is the forerunner of the modern yacht design, and a combination of classic yacht history, with the ultimate elegance in motor yacht design of her age. Meet the Atlantic Endeavour.
