2 The highest quality of respiratory measurement Plethysmography is used to measure all the thoracic gas volume (VTG) whether in communication with the airways or not. VTG provides a true assessment of absolute lung volume. All gas dilution methods (i.e. helium dilution or nitrogen washout etc.) rely on the patency of airways to allow mixing with the gas resident in the open areas of the lung. If airways are completely obstructed, mixing cannot occur beyond the obstruction and therefore the measurement may underestimate the true lung volume. The design of both hardware and software provides flexibility in preferences of testing protocols. The craft of the valving makes such versatility possible. The plethysmograph cabin, electronics and patient valve assembly have all been carefully matched to suit tests on subjects ranging from very small children to people of considerable stature. The patient valve can be simply adjusted to ensure comfort and proper testing posture. The shutter valve is both quiet and efficient. It utilizes compressed gas to gain the efficiency and reliability of pneumatic sealing over thousands of operations. Years of reliable testing Too many pulmonary function instruments in today s competitive market are designed with obsolescence in mind. Not so with any of the Morgan Scientific or MediSoft products! Not only is the cost of service negligible, but the costs of testing supplies are also far less than alternative systems. For DLC studies, only a single cylinder of diffusion gas is required. A typical H cylinder will allow approximately 200 complete PFT studies to be completed. Excellence in single breath diffusion testing comes from years of experience The Body Box 5510 model provides classic DLC measurement in a pressure-less breathing circuit thus avoiding errors caused by demand valves. Before each individual test, the circuit is checked for a vacuum and all bag filling and sampling is automated. A quick-release absorber ensures full fidelity gas analysis by removing the interference of water vapor and carbon dioxide in exhaled samples. With the versatility and power of ComPAS-SQL anything is possible. Testing Systems The mouthpiece structure is cleverly designed for simple adjustment and quick disassembly for sterilization. To ensure patient safety and years of trouble-free operation, the shutter mechanism is pneumatic. Electronically, there is no other plethysmograph that can match the quality of transducers and components employed, nor the innovation of the design. The entire electrical assembly can be easily accessed via a hinged panel. If need be, it can be exchanged in less than five minutes by removing the panel from the cabin wall.

4 Calibration Body Box calibration is very simple and fast; each step is guided by clear and helpful pictorial screens. During calibration sequences, the instrument is skillfully checked for optimum performance and ATS standards of measurement. Body Boxes are supplied with verifiable testing standards: a 3-Liter calibration syringe (for flow and volume), a fluid pressure manometer (for mouth pressure), a 30ml sinusoidal pump and separate pressurizing pump (for box pressure calibration and cabin seal verification). Imbedded Help ComPAS is equipped with a detailed, clear, illustrated Help system that is a mine of information. From background on pulmonary physiology, to detailed instructions on report building and system maintenance; ComPAS HTML Help has all the answers! Chapters of the Help system can be printed for inclusion in departmental procedure manuals. Coaching the Patient Although the Body Box is simple to operate, some measure of patient coaching is required. Tests of VTG can be done at quiet (normal) breathing, or with shallow panting. At the beginning of each maneuver for either VTG or Raw, a coaching screen allows the technician to simulate the mouth shutter closure and the desired panting frequency. An electronic metronome can be engaged during both coaching and testing to assist the patient. Routine Plethysmography Testing The design of ComPAS allows for a wide variety of testing protocols. In each case, the tests are controlled by the simple use of a [Spacebar] or the mouse. Since the Body Box 5500 series cabins equilibrate so quickly, testing with the doors closed is fast and accurate. In less than 20 minutes, a full range of plethysmographic studies together with spirometry, flow volume loops and DLC can be run and verified by repeat efforts. The most user-friendly Bronchial Provocation Testing capability ever! With many PFT systems, Bronchial challenge testing is a tedious and confusing test. Using ComPAS however, it is made straightforward and quite delightful! Each step is organized and assisted with intelligent prompts and timers.
