1 Hautbois Risk Assessment Activity: Estate Assessor: Rachel Jarman Date: January 2012 Tech Advisor: Martin Review Date: January 2013 Page: 1 of 8 Description: The Hautbois Estate comprises 28 acres of parkland, campsites, meadow, shrubbery, woodland, and activity areas. It is divided by a road. Significant Hazard Who Might be Harmed and Existing Controls How Use of Electrical Appliances Hautbois User and All employees are authorised to operate electrical appliances. All electrical appliances to be inspected and tested on a regular basis in accordance with safety policy. Any defects are reported to the manager. Employees are prohibited from carrying out any repairs or modifications to any electrical equipment. Employees are prohibited from bringing their own electrical appliances into the workplace unless they have been inspected and tested in accordance with statutory requirements. The correct type of equipment is purchased for use in offices and workshops and equipment is only used for the purpose it has been designed for. Employees are instructed on the correct and safe operation of equipment, in accordance with manufactures instructions. Occupational Driving Site visits are arranged to ensure the number of hours worked including those spent driving does not exceed 10 per day. If employees become drowsy whilst driving they should take a break. When necessary employees should stop at a hotel and continue their driving in the morning. All employees must hold a full and current driving license. Copies of driving licenses must be provided to the company annually. Employees do not give lifts to unknown persons whilst on company business.

Operating ride on lawn mowers and self driven petrol mowers; Injuries caused by noise and vibration Ear defenders to be worn at all times whilst machinery in operation, anti vibration gloves to be worn ensure that blades are balanced properly prior to fitting and during PPM. Operating Tractor -Overturning Tractor to be maintained to manufactures recommendation and serviced every year. Only designated and competent operatives to drive tractor. Over turning controlled by measures in step 9 of INDG185. Designated safe routes to be followed. Operating Tractor - Falls from Cab Operating Tractor - Entanglement with PTO Shaft Users and Only designated and competent operatives to drive tractor. Operatives trained in safe manual handling technique Driver trained and assessed per INDG 185. Tractor serviced and pre use checks carried out. Driver trained and assessed per INDG 185. Operating tractor - Whole body Vibration Hitching and coupling of trailer and other equipment carried out in accordance with set procedures utilising SAFE STOP. Log kept of hours use don work equipment which has the potential cause for whole body vibration. For prolonged use ear defenders to be warn.

PTO shaft is guarded in its entirety All work is done in accordance with Power take offs and power take offs Drive shafts AS24 (included in folder) Restraining chain device is used at all times. Using Cutting Deck See general PTO section above in addition to this. Cutting deck checked before use. When jacked for blade change additional supports used to prevent entrapment. Blades changed as required. Using a chainsaw (petrol driven) All chain-saw operations are carried out in-line with : 2Using petrol driven chainsaws2 AGAG guide. De-buttressing carried out in accordance with, 2 Chainsaw de-buttressing of standard timer Tree felling carried out in accordance with felling large trees attached. Hearing protection (to EN352 or better) worn at all times. Use for short periods only. Appropriate gloves, with protective guarding to EN381-7 to be worn. Operator to be trained and certified for the type of chainsaw and for the task to be undertaken maximum refresher training three years. The chainsaw to be serviced to the manufacturers requirements.

The chain to be sharp, adjusted and free from excessive wear. The chain saw to be started and operated only in the manner recommended by the manufacturer. Checking the seal of the fuel cap and starting only away from fuelling site. A safe zone shall be established for working in barriers and signs erected to protect the public as required. Operatives to wear safety footwear Good housekeeping to be undertaken All work is carried out in accordance with guide 2Clearing saws, brush cutters and strimmers Machine serviced and checked before use as per manufacturer s requirements. Operator trained how to operate the machine and carry out tasks. Noise levels require wearing of hearing protection (to EN352 or Better) Face and eye protection required a mesh visor (to EN1731 or better) or a face shield (BSEN 166 or better) Petrol is stored in a suitable container. Engine to be switched off for refuelling. Caps to be replaced securely and seal checked. Barriers and warning signs shall be set up where required to demarcate and control work area. Records kept regarding vibration exposure.

Operatives trained in safe erection and dismantling of mobile towers. Safe to use tag to be displayed when tower checked and ready to use. Working area demarcated, barriers and signs in place before work begins. All work using MEWP s is carried out in accordance with the guide MEWP s work tree work. Employees are trained and certified in the use of MEWP s and all work is carried out in line with this training. PPE worn as detailed within the above guide. All equipment with rotating parts must be suitable guarded to prevent contact or a suitable trip device fitted. Additional guards must be in place when in use to prevent ejected materials reaching the operator. Eye protection must be worn where instructed (signs) No lose clothing or hair. Wear hearing protection when carrying out noisy tasks. Keep immediate area clear. All equipment must be maintained and inspected in accordance with manufactures guidelines. CoSHH Assessments RCD or protected supply. Portable Appliance Tests Manual handling training.

7 Review Date: January 2013 Page: 7 of 8 Operating hand tools Visually inspect hand tools prior to use. Quarantine broken or damaged hand tools. When using weeding or cleaning tools make sure a good firm stance is maintained there is enough clear unimpeded space to swing the cutting tool safely. Do not swing the cutting tool directly towards the legs. When using a shorthandled hook keep your free hand well away form the cutting direction. Use of hand saws for brashing and pruning. Make sure there is a firm stance is maintained and there is enough clear, unimpeded space to use the saw safely. (Be alert to hazards such as wasps nests) Do not stand astride the saw Do not stand under branches when pruning them. Ensure any unknown mushrooms or plants do not come into contact with the skin. Using grinding wheel Machine served and checked before use as per manufactures requirements. Operator trained how to operate machine and carry out tasks. Noise level requires wearing of hearing protection to EN 352 or better. Face and eye protection required face shield to EN166B or better. Appropriate non-snag clothing to be warn Ensure that the floor area is free from loose materials and maintained in a safe condition without risks. Other operatives to be excluded from the work zone a minimum of 3 meters No temporary worker or other contractor shall operate the machine. Ensure the no flammables are in the vicinity if grinding creates sparks.

8 Review Date: January 2013 Page: 8 of 8 Application of Pesticides by hand held equipment AFAG1 leaflet 202 to be used as the standard for this work. Bunds if required and spillage kit. Storage to standards set out in HSE agriculture information sheet 16 Only spray when weather conditions permit. Do not spray when others in close proximity. Whenever possible only spray when free form distraction. Only trained and certified people to carry out spraying activities. Ensure spray applications are kept clear at all times. Add dye to spray mixture to show areas sprayed. Strong colours tend to put people off from entering areas.
