3 SKI CHATTER Page 3 SAN DIEGO COUNCIL of SKI CLUBS REPORT by Martin Wascher The Ski Council is busily planning all sorts of ski, travel and social activities. Sometimes I think the Council and FarWest Ski Association are becoming travel agents, but they do work hard to provide a wide variety of activities designed to attract a large number of ski club participants. These activities also serve to introduce club members of different clubs and in a way act as a recruiting tool. I encourage all of our members to participate in as many Ski Council and FarWest activities as possible so that folks know there is a Don Diego Ski Club and that the club actively participates. FarWest Ski Week will be held at Steamboat Springs Colorado, February 2 9 and they have planned a mini Ski Week at Winter Park Colorado March I understand that the Steamboat Springs trip is full, but if you are interested, get on the waiting list. There are always a few cancellations. The Winter Park trip has plenty of openings. For more details please check out the trip fliers on the Don Diego or San Diego Council web sites. Some people had cash money attached to their last year Mammoth season pass that they used to pay for food, drinks, etc. DO NOT throw the old card away because the money left over from last year will not be transferred to your IKON pass but will continue to be carried on your old Mammoth Pass until it is used up. The next two Council functions are not too far away. The first one is the Council Winter Gala on November 17 at the Holiday Inn Bayside starting at 5:00 PM. It is going back to a more dressy social affaire with dinner and dancing. The cost will be $50 per person. Let s get a group of Don Diego members together; put on your best bib and tucker (I ll be wearing my tux), have a nice sit-down dinner and dance to a few of the oldies. Show the Council that Don Diego Ski Club is a group of active club members that support Council activities. The next Council activity is the Christmas holiday happy hour at Humphries By The Bay starting at 4:00 PM on December 19. For more compete information check the event fliers on the Don Diego or San Diego Council web sites. Eileen Sanford is busily working on the Ski Council sponsored trips to Australia/New Zealand and the bike and boat trip to the Netherlands. The fliers for each trip is on the Ski Council web site. The fliers contain trip details and application information. Below is a list of trips. Amsterdam to Bruges Bike and Boat 29 Apr 4 May 2019 with a post side trip to Greece 3 May 11 May 2019 Australia & New Zealand 13 Oct 31 Oct 2019 Ski Japan-Hakuba Valley Ski Resort 9 Mar 16 Mar 2019 The FarWest Convention will be held in Palm Springs the first weekend in June. 4 SKI CHATTER Page 4 HIKING/FITNESS Excerpts from a new study: Not Exercising is worse than Smoking! We've all heard exercise helps you live longer. But a new study goes one step further, finding that a sedentary lifestyle is worse for your health than smoking, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Dr. Wael Jaber, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and senior author of the study, called the results "extremely surprising." "Being unfit on a treadmill or in an exercise stress test has a worse prognosis, as far as death, than being hypertensive, being diabetic or being a current smoker," Jaber told CNN. "We've never seen something as pronounced as this and as objective as this." Jaber said researchers must now convey the risks to the general population that "being unfit should be considered as strong of a risk factor as hypertension, diabetes and smoking -- if not stronger than all of them." "It should be treated almost as a disease that has a prescription, which is called exercise," he said. Researchers retrospectively studied 122,007 patients who underwent exercise treadmill testing at Cleveland Clinic between January 1, 1991 and December 31, 2014 to measure all-cause mortality relating to the benefits of exercise and fitness. Those with the lowest exercise rate accounted for 12% of the participants. The study was published in the journal JAMA Network Open. The benefits of exercise were seen across all ages and in both men and women, "Probably a little more pronounced in females," Jaber said. "Whether you're in your 40s or your 80s, you will benefit in the same way." So get moving, sign up for the next hike! Please look for details for our Thursday hikes in your box and the Don Diego Meetup at You can contact me directly at sabinalb@pacbell.net or on my mobile phone, Sabine, Your Hiking Leader Here are some pics from hikes this past month: atop Cowles Mt. 5 SKI CHATTER Page 5 and here s some more fitness stuff Can You Ski Yourself Into Shape? By Pat McCloskey (Downloaded from There Are Other, Fun Ways To Get Ready Besides Hitting The Gym. One of the myths I hear from people at the beginning of the ski season is that they can ski themselves into shape. They have not really done any preparation for the ski season and feel that they just have to start skiing, and their ski legs will eventually come back. If I ever heard fake news, this is it. Skiing is a dynamic sport and in order to effectively execute a turn, your legs need to be in good shape before the first turn of the season. I can t tell you how many times I have see folks whose legs are killing them after the first and second day of a ski trip. They ski defensively, because they are not in good shape and all the money that they have spent on a ski trip is for naught. That s because they failed to get in shape before they got on that airplane. The same is true for local skiers who make their way to their local ski area and have the same experience. So why not start thinking about this now if you have not done so? There are a lot of articles popping up in the ski periodicals and web sites about exercises that you can do in the gym. But how many of us really want to spend time in the gym day in and day out to prepare for ski season? How many times can we pretend to sit in an invisible chair with our backs to the wall to strengthen our legs? On the other hand, there are outdoor activities that can be engaged to get the legs in shape but are also fun and allow us to be in the outdoors which is where we all want to be in the first place. A good friend of mine says there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices. So why not buy a good Gore-Tex suit for running or hiking and also one to ride in the winter if you can do it. Night riding is a favorite of mine, and there are a lot of options for rechargeable light and battery systems. I have used a lot of expensive lighting options in the past but with the advance of lighting technology, you can now purchase systems for a fraction of the cost of the traditional main stream lighting systems. Cree Mountain Bike Lights found on Amazon are an excellent choice for around $32.00 and provide three mode LED lighting with a rechargeable battery that can provide up to two hours of excellent light on high mode. I use these lights on my handlebar with another one on my helmet. I store the battery for the helmet light in my hydration pack and also the battery for the handlebar light can be attached to the top tube of the mountain bike. I also purchase spare batteries and store them in my pack in the event that there are any issues with the primary battery. It is not too late to get back on that bike, lace up the trail running shoes or hiking boots, and get moving. Your legs will appreciate your diligence now in the early fall season, and you will enjoy your turns and ski outings much better if you take the time to be in shape when the first flakes start to fly in the mountains. With the flaming leaves coming in to view, the trails in our mountains and parks are available for mountain biking, hiking, and trail running. Hiking and trail running uphill prepare the legs for sure as well as providing an excellent outdoor fresh air activity. Mountain biking ramps that up a bit by strengthening the legs on climbs, as well as simulating skiing skills like looking ahead and picking a path through varied terrain. Lots of folks mountain bike, hike, and run during the summer season when the weather is cooperative, but when the time change looms Nov. 4 this year, by the way and the days get shorter, the motivation for these activities starts to wane. If you want to be prepared for ski season, I would strongly suggest that you continue these activities as long as you can during the fall and into the winter if conditions allow. Sure, you can do the gym thing. It s not too late to hit the trails, too....and then when you re all done with the exercise, reward yourself with some cold brews at the Green Flash Brewery and Eatery. Indoor dining Outdoor dining
